Porting GS3 ROM'S to SGH-M819N - Samsung Galaxy Mega

Hello XDA, I just got this phone a few days ago and decided as I do with every phone to install roms. But I have seen that there are very few to none for the Metro PCS version of this phone. I was wondering if there would be a demand for me to port some of the Galaxy S3 roms over to this device. For instance, probably the first one I would port would be CM 12 because that is my favorite and it is not on this phone. I have also seen people saying that they have gotten the I9205/I9200 version of CM 12 working on this device but I am not having any luck. It just wont boot. But I digress, I just wanted to gauge if people on here would be interested in some updated roms for this awesome phone.

So Basically no stable JB Rom exists

I have tried all JB roms for the AT&T Samsung Note 1. Now I am currently running Collective. I have over the past 5 months read through all their Forums and troubleshooting and have followed all instructions to the T. I wont be bashed or called a noob because all phones are not alike and some users don't have certain issues from what I read. BUT others have most definitely had my issues lol. I get random reboots, also seems like phone does not update properly like updates for apps through play store. I reboot my phone and all of a sudden i get new emails and there's 5 updates where my phone while on told me nothing about them. The reboots are the bigger issue. Is there no Stable JB rom out there? I keep being told go back to ICS, which I am believing that after JB being out for so long nobody is able to make the roms stable. Never seen such a long period of no stable rom coming out for a phone. Appreciate any advice ty
Hmm, there is two that I know of now. Cyanogen mod 10, and paranoid android which has cm10 as a base

My first experience with CM10 was that it was not stable, especially coming from CM9 which was rock solid but the last week or so of builds have performed very well for me. Within the last week my phone has rebooted 2x's on me. Both were just as I hung up a call the screen froze then the phone rebooted. Otherwise, I have not had any issues. My previous ROM was JellyBeer which as not quite as stable but still pretty good. I did clean wipes, loaded CM10 (latest) then JB GAPPS 20121011. After rebooting the phone I run "fix permissions" from CWM. I go to the play store and download my apps from there and not from a back up. Hope this helps, good luck.

You must be ON CRACK? The PAC MAN rom is the most stable rom i have ever ran.... and i've tried them all. NO random reboots and no issues. give it a shot man
Isn't the cm10 Jellybean kernel for the note just a modified ICS Kernel with bits and pieces from other kernels put in one package in order to run Jellybean. There's the stability issue. There's no source for the GN Jb kernel yet so they'll be issues. In my experience reboots and lost data connection. That's why I went back to ICS. Everything works. But I would like to check out Paranoid Android 3.0 ,4.2 aospa builds coming out soon. Don't know if there using a cm kernel or in-house built.
Novena injected I717 Samsung Galaxy Note
Nov 8 PA and linero (pacman) kernel and only get a reboot one every 5-7 days . Were on all others was like 3-4 a day . Also I have found (I could be crazy) but when a reboot yellow screen of death occurs power off the phone then restart seems to stop the reboots for much longer ,not that I need to do it anymore.

DING DING DING!!!
No source, mo' problems!
We need source to drop for JB, especially the kernel source...
Until then, we can get "good" builds, but not "Great" builds...
Source is the key, and according to Samsung, the note will get the official upgrade in december...I dont know more than that.....g
so was there ever a great 4.04 aosp or aokp rom for the i717??
by great i mean everything working.. hdmi, usb otg, etc...
on the s2 it seemed that as soon as the source dropped everyone went to jellybean..
so there never was a near flawless build.. and there never were sources for the hdmi and some other drivers..
i dont see it being different on any samsung product..
See this is why I made this thread. Simply put I spend countless hours searching threads and topics and I jsut got 90% of my answers there. I have used cm Roms in the past and I liked them. I am not a expert at rooting but one gets there over time. I really do not think any question is a stupid one but where it posted can be wrong place to post. I do very much appreciate everything everyone has posted. If you have any other imput or great ideas please post. Again ty very much:good:
THE most important thing to remember is that no 2 phones will act the same on every ROM, so, anytime someone says a certain rom is great, or another one sucks, you can only take that with a grain of sand....the ONLY way to know how any rom will run for you is to install it on YOUR phone.
As others have said, until there is source from Samsung, NO JB rom will run perfectly 100% of the time for everyone, so, if you don't want to deal with the possibility of reboots or other weird issues, you are probably best sticking with an ICS rom...
Actually, I have found the JB's to be more stable than the ICS Roms. I have found AOKP Milestone 1 the most stable. No reboots and offers tabletUI if you want it.
Right now, I am running Dman's PACman and find it to be very smooth and stable.

I have been using AOKP Milestone 1 and haven't had many issues. There are a few bugs but nothing show stopping. I run mine at 240DPI and it looks beautiful and have only had 1 reboot. I would give it a try.
On crack lol appropriate but ok. I tried pacman at one point I loved all roms but no phones are equal ever jb rom at some point gave me reboots. Sporting padawan at the moment loving it

[Q] Mega I9205 with Galaxy Gear (4.3??)

I've seen in another thread that someone has the gear working with thier Mega but I'm still having lots of issues.
I've tried installing many versions of Gear Manager and s-voice found on these forums (S4 & Note3) but still it keeps losing pairing, re-pair takes ages, it doesn't notify Email, weather doesn't work at all, S-Voice doesn't work at all. Gmail works but does not display content.
Has anyone else had more success than this? If yes what software versions are you using?
I think most of the issues are purely down to the fact all the apk files were built to run on 4.3.
I haven't played with custom roms since the days of my XDA 1,2 & 3 (yes I am an old school member) so forgive the rather dumb question but why can't we simply put the rom from the Note3 (4.3) on our Mega's? Unless I'm going blind I can't see any 4.3 roms on here at all?

Each ROM is designed to work with a particular device because each device has different hardware. For that reason you can't just load a Note 3 ROM onto a Galaxy Mega. Different devices, different hardware, different ROMs.
There are some rumors so we will have 4.3 for our Megas too. But when, who knows?...
Thanks for the response guys.

[Q] OTAs vs ROMs

Just a dumb question, but what makes an OTA update different from a ROM? More specifically, why can OTAs flash fine while retaining user data while installing a ROM generally requires data to be wiped?
Thanks
It's never required, but is recommended. It can cause issues with a new ROM and it's also been known to sometimes cause issues with ota updates as well. Some people would have to wipe data after doing an update to fix strange issues.
I know in the past when coming from a 4.0 ROM and going to 4.1 or higher almost always needed data wipes. Some data gets associated with an older os and when that data is copied to a newer one, that app may not be compatible with the newer os version, causing issues.

I've only got my S4 four days ago, but I've been ROMing before then for years. Things are a LOT tighter here in S4 land, as you can read all over. ROMing started in the old non-locked down phone days, and is still heavy on Nexus devices. Nexus devices are the ones that are first out the door with a new Android OS. The 'Nexus 5' by LG is out now to introduce KitKat (4.4). As soon as the new Android OS is released on Google's Open Source servers, ROM devs grab it and adapt it to a zillion other phones. Up until last Friday I had a custom ROM 4.4 KitKat on my Galaxy Nexus (got it from VZW on day1 Dec 2011) using full CWM recovery mode to swap ROMS in and out any time.
Answer to your question... an OTA OS is what they want you to have, with all the Samsung/VZW add-ons, a nice safe for them package. A custom ROM you load can be anything else, super clean AOSP Android, or heavily modified with all sorts of cool add-ons various developers have created. Since these S4's are so locked down, devs are really restricted in what they can do to a ROM, and it a real headache to get them loaded after that.
My phone came with MI1 and I rooted it an hour after getting home with it last weekend. I played with Safestrap, but decided there wasn't anything worth ROMing out there for an S4 compared to what I knew on my old open phone. I took the MK7 load 2 days ago, still rooted thanks to the write-ups here. The Samsung/VZW 4.3 is actually pretty nice in my opinion (once you 'Turn OFF' some things or 'Freeze' them with Titanium Backup). I don't plan on any ROMS for the S4. I'm actually relieved with that. ROMing becomes an addiction. My dog is happier with the new phone too, as we get to go on more walks with my new found non-ROMing time.

just got the g900t. did I make a mistake?

recently had an s4 and note 3 got tired of not being able to rom.
I got a killer deal on a g900t assuming that it's bootloader is unlocked and there are at least a few nice roms to choose from. (unlocked using st)
is this all true? I can rom and real recovery this thing?
will I be good to go with am aokp or a cm build because this is unlocked?
because if I can't I will be super bummed.
was this phone a bad Choice?

No it was not a bad phone choice. It's a great phone. I've had mine for most of a year and have NEVER had it lock up or reboot other than when I was playing with apps or roms. I'm on Omega ROM for the S5 and it is reliable as hell. Since the bootloader is unlocked you can run almost any rom you like including CM ROMs or AOKP ROMs. I'm using mine on AT&Ts network and have NO issues. I get a couple days on battery with light to medium usage.
There are a few people who have reset or rebooting problems but it's a very small percentage.
I like the phone a lot.
I had mine since preorder on T-Mobile
I don't have custom recovery just stock rooted with removing the tethering checks and ad block.
No problems with mine.
The best phone ever. I've had it since the first day of release and no problems at all. Personal favorite ROM edgarf28's XtreStroLite (as a daily driver, this is a solid ROM), love CM11 (4.4.4) and looking forward to having some time next week to play with CM12.
You're choice is sound my friend. Don't ever look back. Do clean installs and follow direction and you will be rewarded.

I'm coming from iPhone and one of the main reasons for going back to samsung after years of being locked down-juat a little out the loop
As far as I've seen, nothing yet.
