Official ROMs vs Unofficial ROMs - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
well I have no experience with Custom-ROMs, so can someonePlease explain to me
where exactlythe difference between Official ROMs and Unofficial ROMs is ?
What would you recommend in terms of stability
thanks

This is what I believe it means, using CyanogenMod as an example (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CyanogenMod).
AFAIK the CyanogenMod team develop their custom rom for a generic platform. They then select a number of devices and customize the generic version so it can be applied and used on these selected devices.
An official CyanogenMod ROM is when the CyanogenMod team have selected the device and done the extra work for the custom ROM to work on that device themselves.
Unofficial means that the extra work to tailor the custom CyanogenMod ROM for the device is done by other developers, who use the generic base which CyanogenMod provide.

To my understanding its more like sub-beta, directed mainly for flash freaks (count me in).
Regarding stability some official ROMs are far from stable, while some unofficial are ages in front.

Thanks guys for the great explanation....appreciate it...
well , During my search for a good ROM software I have often read that the 2 Roms was s always recommended
1. Temasek
2. LiquidSmooth
i mean are both roms really good and stable on s3?
or would you recommend something else
thanks

I would recommend CM12.1 as a daily driver. Is clean and fast. It works way better than stock Samsung ROMs and is very stable thanks to @JustArchi. It also drain less battery and has a good power save feature.

My current setup is this:
Recovery: TWRP
ROM: CM12.1
Kernel: Boeffla
And never been happier with my i9300

Hi
I have the latest version temasek's UNOFFICIAL CM12.1 v18.0 flashed + PA-GOOGLE APPS Plus GOOGLE STOCK PACKAGE
and I must say it really makes a great impression, everything seems stable so far.....
well the only thing that bothers me is the (ugly white background in Android Lollipop)but its just a matter of taste :silly:

Plus the newer builds of CM12.1 have OTA updater working.

How would you estimate the stability and performance of CM12.1 ROM's compared to official CM11 nightlies?

Flashed official CM11 once. Within 30 minutes of testing a had plenty of crashes and several Cannot connect to camera.
Lot of people here say that there is no need to move to Lolipop, because Kitkat is far more stable.. However I wouldn't agree.

[Q] What is, in your opinion, the best ROM for the device.

I'm not exactly sure whether this belongs to the general sub or not, do correct me if I'm posting this at the wrong place.
Anyways, what is in your opinion the best third party ROM at the moment for the device?
I had stuck with Carbon for half a year, it worked great but had minor issues that won't be resolved or can't be resolved in future update such as Bluetooth issues and YouTube playback issues.
I switched to BlissPop, ended up with endless bugs and crashes, thus I'm considering switching again. But I don't know what to switch to that's completely bugless, or at least, only have very minor bugs and feature rich. KK or L preferred
So, what's your choice?
I don't think there is one.
I have been trying quite a few with the help of multirom though in the last week or so bliss pop, validus, and then the whole system fell over. I couldn't boot. Blinking red led when I plugged charger in. I digress.
Vanir or validus. I'm leaning towards validus slightly at the moment.
I will definitely try a stable version of slimlp when available. Assuming I've not completely broken my phone by then.
Team UB is my new daily.
I like Validus over other roms.
here is my answer
I don't know exactly why I choose these ROM to be the best.I separate it into 3 base.Stock , KK and LP
On KK based:AOSB 1.3.7 (feature)and FXP CM11(most stable AOSP based ROM ,ever!)
On Custom Stock:StoneUI HD3(debloated and DoomKernel-ed , waiting for its HD4)
On LP based: DirtyUnicorn(I still using this cause its stable in my opinion and for waiting StoneUI HD4 to arrive)and CyanHacker(my first LP ROM but I just use it for a week)
Conclusion:Search your own taste, mate!(even though your taste change like your mood)
P.S:I just realize z ultra is ridiculous whenever using material design and PhoneUI instead of PhabletUI
Sincerely
8_Incher
i'm using the latest slimkat (build 9?)
it's been my daily driver since release
I am using:
Cyanogenmod 12 Android 5.0.2
AOSB 1.3.7 Android 4.4.4
and Stock Rom Android 4.4.4
I think the Best of this is Cyanogenmod 12, I am using Multirom

Which ROM do u Want?

I have time and I like building ROMs, but I have a problem, there are a lot of roms and limited storage in my computer. So I can build at least 6 different roms.
I already have Resurrection Remix(CMbased), AOKP(wont boot, for now, when they used some CM stuff like KK may work), BlissPop(finish download of sources as I'm writing this), OMNI(the same as AOKP), DU(I'll download it tonight), SOKP(I don't know anything about this rom in LP, but in KK was very good) and PAC(to build UMTS).
These is what I have now(I know I say 6 different roms and I have 7 ), roms CMBased is easy and only use 2/3 GB on my Computer but for example DU and AOKP are AOSP based so this roms may work because all the parts of the rom are directly from Google and don't have any modifications like CM does to make it compatible with our device, some things I can do to make it work like AOKP KK, but LP is starting and every version 5.0, 5.0.2, 5.1.0 have a lot of changes between versions and Google does not give time for developers to make enough changes to achieve a stable version, so I don't have any base to use or pick changes.
Only told me what rom do you want and I see what can I do
Regards and sorry for the inconvenience.
I heard that BlissPop is good and I want to try it but I also like what you did with RR and Aokp...
I don't know, maybe the best thing would be to make one but awesome rom!
I'll be happy with your decision
Sent from my Razr XT910
I'll try anything based on AOSP. Since you are having problems with AOKP, I will try DU and Omni... Thanks, @tonyt.!

[Q] Which rom (4.4.x or 5.1.x) is best for daily use?

I want install a custom rom on my girlfriend's galaxy s2, but I would be sure that the rom I choose hasn't camera/audio/3g/wifi bugs. I saw the paranoid rom with android 4.4 and cm rom 12.1 nightly but I'm undecided which one to choose. Can someone give me a suggestion? Also on other rom
If you want to run on a newer Android version, here's a link to a unofficial CyanogenMod ROM of Lysergic Acid. The newest build is Android 5.1.2 but I don't know if everything works. I am using an older build (03/31 EOL Build) which is Android 5.0.2. No major bugs at me, WiFi, Network, Bluetooth, Camera, Audio all working. Only noticed that device is getting very hot at hard usage and sometimes WiFi Hotspot doesn't work. Battery lifetime is ok. I don't recommend the official nightly version because as the name says it's full of bugs.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2955551
If you want to avoid any kind of little bugs here is a stable official version of CM:

Hope this helps.

Best Custom Rom For Redmi note 4? [Dec Update 17]

Guys I am on miui 9 but I want to swap to a custom rom. So which will be the best custom rom for the device (Indian Variant) till the date (Dec 17)? Testers and devs please reply. I hope this will be a useful for new users too on XDA.
There are tons of Roms to choose from...
Currently I'm on LineageOS 15 unofficial build by @abhishek987, this just Rocks.
About nougat Roms? Yeah, there are already bunch of Nougat Roms.
Bugs?
NOMMUCH, but the flash color is yellow (just an FYI)
I think Oreo is not ready just yet.. I am on RR and I enjoy it a lot! Alexey provides unofficial build frequently, and they have absolutely no problem. Everything is great, and if you need customization, it is the way to go. If you want a near stock experience go for LineageOS, 14.1 or 15, tor choice.
I would like a LineageOS based rom. Then What will be your suggestions on L14 Based stable rom? And I am recently following your Index of The device. Thanx in adv mate @sachin n
Yeah I am a Big fan of RR. Is the RR 5.8.5 stable? Cause i saw on the thread saying that It is Final but status is still Testing So If you can suggest me any stable nougat version of RR with link then that will be so much helpful and bugs in short if there any. Thnx you man in adv. @ToRt1sher
Ii has been incredibly stable for me. I think 0 crash/ random restart since day 1! I am on the unofficial build, which does not have a dedicated thread. But half the post on that thread refer to the unofficial one. The only bad thing is that there are 2 different builds, each with different LED notification driver. If it doesn't behave properly you will have to flash the other one, but that's like, a ten minute business.
Is this the Rom's link you are talking about?
https://sourceforge.net/projects/resurrectionremix/files/mido/
Please confirm if. If it is not then kindly share the link @ToRt1sher
@sachin n which kernel do you use with Linos 15 , stock or somthing else
Stock only
I recommand los 14.1 It's very stable, lightweight and you can root it without losing ota function...everything is fine!
This is the official. It is certainly very good, but outdated by 2 months. Alexey just made a final build a few days ago..
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=673791459329064493
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=817906626617949855
These are the 2 builds, with different LED drivers. Try them out, pick the one that works with your specific device.
Crdroid and resurrection remix
All the ROMS are crap here.... some form of bugs are present.. If you want to live with it, use them. If you are going to use BHIM for online transactions then rooted phones are not supported. Better to use official MIUI rom which has most of the features.
@viewedit Did you try magisk hide or root cloak (xposed) to use bhim? works on my slim rom?

Need help deciding which custom ROM to go for..

(Device: HDX 7 Thor) Alright... This is the first time ever for me to flash a ROM..
The principles that I have in mind is that I do NOT want the latest, greatest and most secure ... I want the lightest on resources...
As you guys probably already know with each new Android release it becomes more memory and power hungry, so I reckon I want a (stable and fully functional) ROM based on an older release..
According to my research I realized that most users recommend LineageOS but I can only find the oldest version going back to 2017..
Another ROM I found here in the forum is Nexus v4.0.5 which is based on Kitkat..
What do you guys think the advantages and disadvantages of installing either
-Latest LineageOS
-Fire Nexus KTU84Q (a very stable version of the latest Fire Nexus v4.0.5)
-Oldest stable version of LineageOS or CYANOGENMOD
-AospExtended (based on Nougat)
Im to looking for best option for wifi/bluetooth connectivity. Plus it needs to be android 5.0 or newer for the dedicated app I'm using.
Did you find a good one?
I'm in the same boat. Was running AospExtended for a while now, but the WiFi issues and GMS drain was driving me crazy. When it runs, it's very smooth and has great battery life - 1 month in standby, >>8h of usage. Trying now the latest LineageOS, but I suspect the same issues will be there.
