Are the DRM keys useful at all when using a third-party camera app? - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had a Z1C and have a Z3 now, and unlocked the bootloaders without backing up the DRM keys. Since I've never actually used the camera in its intended state (with DRM keys intact), I have no idea if third-party apps take advantage of Sony's algorithms. Before I unlock the bootloader and lose the DRM keys forever, do I have to use Sony's camera app in order to take advantage of the DRM algorithms? Would Google Camera take pictures with the same quality as Sony's app if I keep the DRM keys intact?

No.

Is there any camera app that can use the 23MP instead of only 8?

I was wondering about that myself. If you can only take advantage of the camera with the official camera app and a locked bootloader, I might as well unlock the bootloader, root the phone, and forget about the DRM keys.

I'm comparing pictures between the official camera and Google's and Google's pictures are horribly blurry. I take the same picture, zoom in all the way into one thing, and compare the detail. The difference is ridiculous.

XZU + Lollipop - The camera is dead again. Anybody else?

So after the ridiculous upgrades to 4.4.3/4.4.4 that broke the camera, I went to CM11 and have been there happily ever since. Well, the 5.0 update was too sweet to pass up so I flashed back to 4.4.2 stock, then OTA'ed to 4.4.3/4.4.4, then 5.0.
Bad news gang, the camera is busted again. Rear camera is dead, selfie cam is fine... just like 4.4.3.
Thanks Sony!
Anybody else do the upgrade yet? Any luck getting the camera back?

Well actually, I have the same issue. My rear camera is *working*, but the auto focus is dead as well.
What are you doing to get around that?

Well, they load and operate as well as the stock app, still no auto focus on the rear camera and they'll freeze or just silently fail when you try.
Looks like I need a Nexus 6. Special thanks to Sony for this one.
I had the same camera issue for on my bootloader unlocked ZU GPE.
Here is what I did.
I flashed 4.4.2, flashed the stock recovery, and then relocked the bootloader.
Then I called Google play customer support and had mine replaced under warranty.
It looks like that is the only option to fix the this camera mess that Sony created.
BTW, I did this before the lollypop update became available.
I'm using Android 5.0 on my Z Ultra GPE, and the front (8M) camera works fine in Camera FV-5, a paid app.
Do you have manual focus/DNG capture/manual exposure settings in Camera FV-5?

You can read about Camera FV-5's features here.
Manual Focus and RAW-DNG are supported by the application, but not by the Z Ultra GPE. You would need to be using a Nexus 5 or Nexus 6 (and Android 5.0). For the rest of us, the app offers lossless PNG.
There's no a Manual exposure mode (M) or Aperture-priority (A): just Program (P) and Shutter Priority (S). In P, you can easily override the nominal exposure by using your finger to move an exposure compensation slider. But whether this override is provided by the shutter or the aperture is decided by the app, not by you.
Shutter-priority (S) is crude; you must manually type the shutter speed you want! It's more for long exposures than for everyday use.
What I like most is how easily I can change ISO (Auto-50-100-200-400-800-1600-3200) without going to the menu.
(added Dec. 10. 2014): You can tell Android 5.0 to save your pictures (and for Cinema FV-5, your movies) to your external micro SD card.
Similar flexibility is provided for movies by the maker's Cinema FV-5. In that app, you can choose not just your resolution, but your recording quality level, recording codecs for video and audio, and frames per second. The only feature not supported by the GPe seems to be "unsupported resolutions"; I don't see any additional resolutions.

Best Camera setting for Z2

What is best Camera setting for Z2? superior auto with 8MP? superior auto 20.7MP? other camera app? some tweaks?
I'm not good at taking picture like manual mode.....
not exactly a best setting
you have to adjust your Exposure,ISO,metering and white balance accordingly to where you are and your surroundings
I can't see a difference in 20 vs 8. Even cropping and zooming in every thing looks the same.
try this
There isn't a real settings (depends on situation if you are). Well 20.7 megapixels in superior auto is usefull in certain situation, because this mode use the scene mode and high iso settings(over 800) in certain situations. In manual mode those thigs are locked in 20.7 megapixels. In low light situations, for example it's very usefull :good:. Some 3rd party apps unlocked some scenes, iso mode in 20.7 megapixels. I suggest to you procapture(the quality of image in 100% is amazing, night mode strangely increased it),a better camera and camaringo For front camera i think is better to use in most cases the sony camera....the images are less noisy BONUS(if you would a boost in image quality,it's the same in every android. ): You can also mod build.prop to have 100% image quality or mod memcap of image...but i suggest to search on internet for this, if you can try
EDIT: Oh i forgot, i suggest you to use mult autofocus and muti methering in manual camera with camera button for best photo!
Why i cannot manually choose the iso i want to take photo with other apps, i know what i am doing using ISO100 suddenly it become ISO800 when i hit the shutter.
My Z2 is rooted but still locked bootloader.

I don't know...it's a sony drm limitation? I advice you to use for iso modification , the stock manual camera for other things, the 3rd party apps :good: the results are also really great
I have a question, wanted to create a thread for it but thought i can just ask here, though i might as well go ahead to create the thread if i dont get the answer here.
Is there a way to tweak/modify/change the functionality of the camera button i.e to change the camera which the camera button launches, say from stock to any third party app? I think the ProCapture is a good one

It's a good rom with 3.12 base (the 1.8 i downloaded directly in chinese forum...whith help of google translate eheheh...but in the last page of that topic there is the link ) . The fact of camera button of my rom is related because i don't use stock lockscreen If i use stock lockscreen, camera button open only stock camera. Try snaplock lockscreen(you can find this in playstore) .

Z2 Best camera app? And best mod?

What is the best camera app that produces the best quality and resolution? Perfectly clear app has an option for 20mp resolution does it really do 20mp?
And there has been many camera mods that modify the quality which one do you recommend?
Stock camera
Sony block out the controls on third party apps so in terms of quality using the manual controls on the stock camera is the best way to go.
Not if you unlock your bootloader, in which case I think most other camera apps work better than Son'y camera.
I've tested Google camera and Open camera, and both gave good results and better than stock, on unlocked bootloader of course.

On Aosp/Cm based roms when controlling iso results in lag which makes viewfinder unusable...and in stock roms i guess procapture/open camera are the best since they allow you to use scenes in full 20mpx mode.

In my opinion, the stock camera is the best.
Although it normally takes photos in 8MPx (you can change that in kitkat) it has the fastest focus.
However you may try the HTC's camera (available in themes&mod section here).
It takes 20MPx pictures by default, but you can't really want more from a pic that the hardware offers.

Camera bugs

Anyone else noticed that when using original camera app and recording a video (I tried it in 4k but I assume it is same in other mods) when you switch off the sound in camera settings then the sound is still recorded??? I tried to toggle it but no matter on or off it is still recorded...
Another bug is that on the bottom of the camera settings there is an option to 'reset settings to defaults'. Well I click it and nothing happens... It doesn't work either.
Also they didn't provide possibility to take pictures in 21:9 to cover entire screen. Where 3rd party apps can do this. Maybe not 21:9 but 7:3 (that should be same) that results with 7MPx picture. Hence it's possible!
I wonder who is testing it???
Is sony testing its software at all?
Tried to post it on their original forum but currently they have 'technical problems'.
OMG this company is so incompetent and pointless.
Also recording videos in 4k is losing the frames so need to use 3rd party app to have smooth 4k recording. And they aim to be top in camera department?
With what?
They abandoned all Xperia 1 users with garbage and without updates or new features. Now even security patches are not coming on time.
Pathetic.

This sound option toggles the shutter/video record/stop sounds. It does not toggle whether or not sound is recorded

Not sure what to tell you, this option works for me. If you want to reset the program, you can also do it by "clearing storage" in the Apps section of settings.

They probably assume if you want 21:9 then you'll just crop a larger image to fit the screen. You are correct in that the CinemaPro program does take advantage of the 21:9 aspect ratio by shooting in it.

Yeah, it's pretty depressing that the Xperia 1 fails to deliver what would be expected in the camera department for a 2019 flagship model that is specifically marketed towards media creation and consumption. Especially when their mirrorless cameras are some of the best for video quality in their price point.
A little off topic, but this video does a good job explaining why Sony, though they seem determined to continue making phones forever, are doing a crap job of selling them which just hurts the consumer more and more

New photo Pro app available

Guys, just seconds ago, I found, that there's the (from what I guess) new photo pro app from xperia 1 III is available here apkmirror.com
I tried to install and it worked!
Not able to take a screenshot as it's forbidden by system (not really necessary, sony). It has the new basic mode, that was shown on press release.
What are the differences with the mark II version? Difference in image quality or options?
From my guess, what sony is going to archive in future models, is to combine the normal and the pro-app, so there would be no need to develop and maintain two different apps - that saves money for them.
The linked app is already combined, some settings are slightly different insinde the pro-modes. You can switch to effects from basic-mode. I'm going to try to abandon the normal app and see, if the new one misses anything.
Thanks for posting that. I've tried it and it's great except that I normally open photo Pro in manual mode but this new app defaults to the basic camera app so you then have to change it to the camera pro app yourself. A small thing but just one more step that we didn't have previously when the two were separate apps. I see no setting to change how it opens by default so if anyone else does...
On a positive note, I may be imagining a slight thing but I think quality has maybe improved fractionally. To be specific, everyone has raved about this phone taking RAW files that you can develop yourself ( even though I think most flagship phones do now ) but I have always found that indoor shots with this phone in RAW always require a tripod which means you are just as well getting your real camera out. The ISO has to be low otherwise there is so much noise that even tools in lightroom struggle to fix it. But I think I see less noise now in handheld shutter speeds in low light.
But thanks to OP for spotting this app & bringing it to our attention.
BTW, how does anyone know this is the app from Xperia 1 iii when it's not released yet? Is there information on Sony website?
Many thanks.

I always open the Pro app with a push on the camera button. The new Pro app can be configured to open in Pro mode when pressing the camera button, so it works great for me.

That's what I've done too, with button mapper app. Howerver, it does not work when screen is off for my non rooted device. Don't forget to set photopro bypass in button mapper when photopro is active.
Tap tap app is also an interesting option.
For now I removed the update and reverted to the original Pro app.

Is there a way how to downgrade to original Photo Pro w/o root? I fear the answer is no.
It seems this upgrade broke eye AF at least on 70mm camera. All pictures of my wife and daughter focused on eye are out of focus. . Also manual object tracking seems not to work at all.
