laggy sometimes? - OnePlus X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off, I want to start this with saying I try most all the new phones as they come out.
I have found after clearing caches, factory resets, etc...that this phone is a little laggy sometimes.
Just scrolling through the OS, little jitters here and there.
Is it just because of the age of the CPU? I was thinking with Oxygen being close to stock, that the 801 would be fine, but I am catching some lag sometimes.
I have used the Nexus 5x, 6p, and OPT to compare and yes, I know those are flagship phones and have more powerful cpus, but just wondering if the little lags are just due to the cpu in this phone.
thanks

Same experience here. I think you must be right about the cpu

What?

Happens for me since OTA 2.1.3
Just revert to 2.1.2 and it's all butter smooth again

Problem lies within oxygen os. 801 is one of the best chips out there. Just wait for custom roms to be stable and ditch oxygen asap.

Battery saver only leaves on essential phone activities and turn off/lower everything is else. CPU clock, animations and other radios, correct??
I just turned off all animations and only been using LTE a good amount of the time. Only lag ive seen is when I open an app, then go to home screen to open another app. A few seconds after the first app opened finally launches then the second app. This was intentional for testing
One thing is for sure, oxygen os still needs to be refined but really good for daily usage.

at&t note runs on one processor?!

Ok so im rooted and overclocked and was using setcpu then decided i wanna try something different so i tried system tuner! When i checked the cpu it said that one of the processors are off line! Then i pressed the info button and sure enough it says only reading one! So i went through the settings and found force both cores online!
Since then i have no lag and virtually no checkerboarding on the web! Anyway i was just wondering if im the only one who noticed this and maybe it could help those who say that they are still getting lag on they're roms using dag's kernel!
Also i hope devs will notice this thread since i can't post there yet and take advantage of this how ever they can!
Now don't quote me on this but most likely the second core only turns on for processor intensive activities such as high graphics games or multiple programs running at once. I do find it hard to believe that it would be totally disabled. Most likely this is done to conserve battery.

Okay if this really is the case I could also see at&t disabling the second core totally to save battery because of lte but i guess it will take a dev that has more experience with how qualcomm's multicore cpus work in android. report back with differences in battery life like how much faster does it drain now that both cores are forced on.
if you want both cores on click on boot settings and enable force all cpus online. that heats up your phone and eats more battery though+I do not see any benefits doing that.

I've had it like this for 4 days on average i will take of the charger at 8am now is 8:30pm and i have 27% but i use my navigation for my Job! By 10:30 or so ill have 15% and recharge!
Settings

Governer
Smartassv2
Both cores pushing
Screen off
192 max
In call

Tomorrow ill post some pics of battery life usage!
And my phone doesn't get any hotter than normal not even while using my navi! Mostly it just gives no lag and better rendering in the browser/maps/etc!!
I was under the impression that Gingerbread didn't fully utilize multiple cores. Need HC or ICS...

Same, but having a better processor helps. Like exynos. I bet once we update to ics if it ever happens, the differences will be only minor between processors, as it runs so nice.

Not entirely true.. the Galaxy Nexus has a kernel governor that turns one core off when the SCREEN IS OFF, but not when the phone is being used. Multiple kernel creators have since implemented this into their kernels. It is called "hot plugging" and it just turns CPU 1 offline when the screen is off and turns it back on when the screen is on

Just checked mine, rooted and OC with DaG's 0.1 version (first version). When I looked, it said the second CPU was offline. Changed it to online, we'll see how that impacts battery life.
How much of an advantage is smartassv2 anyway?
I just tried this with system tuner and both cpus were working but wone was of and on and zero was always on.
I am running stock rooted. If you just sit yhere and watch it you will see tje sevond core fires and shuts down alot.

Same for me (CPU 0 on, CPU1 off, most times) and I'll say I have noticed no real changes in functionality (speed, rendering, etc) or battery life...
I guess jury is still out or is this a YMMV kind of thing?
I installed system runner and watched the cpus. One was on and the other kicked in periodically
Mine said it was offline as well. Forced it on and am not noticing any difference in speed or temp.

I don't know why everyone is in such a rush to force the second core online, it turns on and off when it needs to.

[Q] ROM with the least battery consumption?

The title says it all, lately I have been having battery problems. I have removed most of the apps I had, been using deep sleep, and I kill all running tasks. I think its my ROM.
I am running Pacman 4.3
There are WAY too many factors at play when it comes to battery life to really narrow it down to a "best ROM". Keep your screen dark, turn off location services and data when not using them, avoid poor wifi connections in settings, set screen timeout to shortest possible, etc...
Do your best at minimizing battery loss. Keep in mind, this is a small computer. It WILL suck a lot of battery. There is no magic app to give you days of use. The ROM you run really won't make much of a difference. It's the services and how you maintain your battery that will.
In my experience, Houstonn's 4.3 PA and stock 4.4 builds have been the lightest on battery.
Though, At this time, Any 4.4 is good.

The two biggest battery consumers are the screen and the data radios. Anything you can do to decrease y the battery usage of those two will give you the best battery life.

To that end, an app like JuiceDefender configured to manage the days radios can go a long way to extending battery life.

I flashed SlimKat 4.4.2 beta 1.6 WEEKLY and the battery has been outstanding. I use JuiceDefender Ultimate and lower screen brightness along with limited connectivity when the screen is off. Unplugged for 8 hrs and used for at least 4 today. I'm still over 70%!
I haven't had any bugs, random reboots, or force closes.. SlimKat is a great build thus far!

Marshmallow Update, Impressions, comparison, found bugs etc.

]Finally is here. Marshmallow 26.3.A.0.131 update bring us so wanted improvements.
Here you can post your thoughts, performance reports, or possible bugs you may found.
First what get better:
1. Overall performance - is so smooth, every menu scroll fast.
2. Camera - i can't confirm, seems little bit better
3. WIFI - Wow so much better, before i was trying couple times until get connected, now is instant.
4. Actual perfomance - I make test with Antutu, Asphalt etc. Is much, much better. Antutu score on Android 5 was around 29 k and 30 k max. Marshmallow wake the beast and score now is 32 k. Asphalt 8 is playable on medium settings, before very low settings was only way to play it normal. Do you know why? CPU isn't limited anymore 4 cores on 1.46 Ghz and 0.8 Ghz for the second 4 cores.
What wasn't fix, or improve:
Apps opening time
Overheating is same as before
Low storage
More perfomance needed
Sites loading is slow as before
I found two bugs, the one bug is in the dialer the letters under the numbers are repositioned a little bit, and idk if this is a bug but the status bar doesn't take the color of the app you are using

I think it's called "feature", you may want to try What's New (Play Store) themes if you'd like colourful status-bar. It looks like that stock themes prefer black status bars now.

Seems to be a bug, Detect USB device does not make sense without OTG.
The update is fine but a little bit disappointed specially on performance, apps are still opening very slow although UI is faster, at least now we have a better multitasking performance and no more bugs on RAM.
I had about 35k score in Antutu so MM sucks.

I don't like the fact that mpdecision is not included in the new update. it gives me huge battery drain.

I also found that speaker was louder and clear on LP plus even have a little bit of distortion at max volume now, and in mi case, performance in 3D games was smoother in LP 3.120 with ondemand CPU governor. It might fix again if i change governor in MM but still not rooted as im waiting for a method for locked bootloader.

How to get a buttery smooth UI.

So I wanted to write this quick and simple tutorial on how to get utter smooth UI. it only takes 3 quick things and you'll be set.
1. Use Nova Launcher. TOUCHWIZ has come a long way but it's still not where it needs to be.
2. Under developer options make all the animations .5
3. Under developer options turn on Force GPU Rendering.
With these three things done this phone is absolutely butter smooth and runs super fast.

How does Force GPU Rendering speed things up?
And shouldn't the animations be 0?

You can install system UI tuner and make the animations even faster. I set it at 0.3 now. Also make sure you disable as many things as possible, things you don't use and especially knox and secure folder.
I'm grateful because I know someone learned something. But I thought this was pretty common.
I've been away from Samsung since note 4. Sad these devices still have that slight lag.
None of what's in the op fixes the issue in the long wrong. First thing I did when I recurved the phone but 2 months later, lag fest.
Luckily I got mine for free.

Same here. Not even the tiniest lag or stutter. Set my animation speed to 0.5x (I do that even on AOSP phones) and it's faster than anything. Apps load instantly. Battery life is great. Screen quality is unbelievable. Camera quality is sick. Best phone I ever had. Now when I see how many problems Pixel 2 and 2 XL has. I'm happy that I got this phone. Samsung is improving a lot. But next year I might switch to Pixel 3 XL(only if they will fix all these problems).
I think the Play Store and Chrome lag from time to time. The Samsung browser is smoother.

This shouldn't even be up for discussion. If your touchwiz UI is not smooth on this phone maybe do a restore or check for 3rd party software utilizing your CPU in back ground. This phone doesn't need 3rd party launcher or customization to be smooth.

Performance modes do nothing in terms of how CPU and GPU are handled all they do is mess with resolution screen brightness.
Also force GPU 2d is doing nothing for you as it was put in place long time ago for apps that didn't utilize GPU for 2d. This day age with new android and touchwiz your GPU is being used and you could test this buy enabling *show GPU view updates* in dev options and navigate your UI and you will see the screen flashes red that because your GPU is already being used
^^ Thanks for the tip. I have moved on to X.

Well good for you Some people can't handle the options you get with Android. At least you know your limitations. Best of luck on the X !
Note....this isn't sarcasm. Coming from a technical background, if you don't need or use the features of the note, by all means go with something simpler for you to use! My wife loves her iPhones..... I have an i7 MacBook pro and I've built several hackintosh towers. I'm not against apple but their iOS can't do what I need it to physically / technically. The note is the best of the best of the Android platform at the moment.

I though about the X as only thing really holding back on ever getting iphone really was lack of OLED as im not into rooting and custom ROMS anymore.
Wanted X more so for game optimization but is way too much $$$ for what you get.
Glad I didn't though the note 8 *qualcomm*is huge surprise in terms of performance compared to like my note 5 that would thermal throttle way too fast and frames would drop. This phone has no noticeable thermal throttling with games so games that support 60fps run smooth and sustain performance and course you cant beat the quality of this screen my UHD mkv movies look so good on this.

Question Laggy UI and bad real world performance

I recently went from a oneplus 5 to the nord 200 when I switched to t-mobile because of the free promotion. Before I got it I did a little bit of research on the processor and storage speed and didn't expect much of a difference in performance because the snapdragon 480 seems to be fairly powerful and the nord has the same UFS 2.1 storage as my old phone.
I was pretty disappointed to find in my use the phone about 1/2 the time the phone was pretty sluggish in the general user experience and app launch times were significantly longer. May be placebo, but I disabled digital wellbeing, and all the tmobile bloatware and it may have helped a little. I remember reading oneplus heavily throttled some of their phones in recent history. I may switch back to my old phone.
I know the device is relatively new, do you guys think it will get better with software updates or is this just how it is?
I found turning on "Mobile data always active" in the developer options massively improved performance in my apps (at least where online load times and download speeds in-game were concerned)
Did you just get your phone recently? After setting up this phone for the first time, I also noticed the device was extremely slow, with all the app and software updates happening in the background. After all the updates were installed, I turned the phone off for about a day, and performance went to normal. It's not as fast as a flagship and there are minor hiccups here and there, but that's about what I expected from a 400 series SoC.
My original report was the day after I set everything up, I disabled the permissions for the launcher which did improve the responsiveness of the launcher, but application performance and launch times are still slow compared to my old device and not what I would expect from a phone of this spec.
I'm pretty confident this phone is a victim of oneplus' recently reported throttling for battery life. I was curious and compared geekbench scores (which aren't throttled under oneplus' list) and both the nord and my oneplus 5 got fairly similar scores for both cpu and compute. I tried out a browser benchmark motionmark which benches graphics performance. The nord got a 25 and the oneplus 5 got a 189... I ran the test again to make sure but got similar results.
That graphics should be coming from gpu and not cpu though....
I tested cpu and compute on geekbench, compute is a measure of gpu performance. The nord scored a little higher than the 5 in that.
I would assume oneplus' throttling would effect cpu and gpu but even if not, my oneplus 5 scoring almost 8x as high does not seem anywhere near normal

I'm about to throw away this phone into trash. Did not expect so weak dev community activity. You know, custom ROMs don't just appear out of thin air. Someone has to take the time to bring up a device and make it stable, and it's not an easy task. I would say to be patient and just accept the fact that there's no guarantee that this device will get custom ROMs.
