Debloating, what is safe to remove? - T-Mobile LG V10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been searching the threads and wanted to know what is safe to freeze/remove? I imagine the list for the TMO G4 would be the same for this this device?
Sent from my LG-H901 using Tapatalk

Experimentation is key.
So far for me I've frozen anything listed as t-mobile with the filter option. I've frozen (deleting caused problem) all the Instagram Facebook (messenger too) handlers. Froze App Source I deleted the LG voicecare (only cause when I ran LG update I stupidly checked all of them) since I know I could without drama. My best suggestion is freeze first. Run phone for a bit and see if you get any errors on the screen.

This is everything that I have frozen. No issues so far. I have Nova installed as a system app, that way I can freeze the LG launcher.

Which app are you using to freeze the T-mobile bloatware?

With all the items you froze, do you still see the app showing usage in the battery stats? I have had devices that this occurred.

To be honest I haven't really looked at it. For whatever reason, I can't seem to get Better Battery Stats to work right. I've been having good battery life so it hasn't really been on my mind (average of 4-5 hours SOT).

Yes, but you also need the pro version of the app to freeze apps.

okay, but...
If i were to delete these apps, instead of freezing, would it blow my phone into oblivion?

You can delete all the Google and all the T-Mobile apps. Also delete AdaptClient and LTDDM, as those are behavior-tracking spyware apps.
You can delete LGPartnerBookmarksProvider which is a carrier customization package for Chrome.
Don't delete any LG apps as they're all tied into the system one way or another.
When I was making my ROM, I found that deleting LG apps would often result in FCs in random settings screens or other LG apps.

Some apps will, some won't, just make a backup before you start, that way if you break something, you can restore...

freezing/deleting bloat
Hey, I'm curious how you managed to delete Google apps without ill effect. I shut off the Google suite and my phone went nuts. Particularly bothersome was the loss of voice to text and spell checker when writing text messages (with Textra). The Google keyboard and ( I don't know why there are so many voice related apps)the voice recorder and the other audible vocal apps I had to turn back on. Do you have a trick that made it possible to disable chrome without headaches?

I imagine (and I mean this as much as a question as I do a comment) that after removing apps that serve a purpose such as Google keyboard, you could restore functionality by installing a replacement app of your choosing...? At least it seems to make sense in theory.. Plz correct me if I'm mistaken ... This is the 1st device I'm debloating myself manually so no experience to back my assumption... But I would like a more seasoned opinion on the matter... Thx

[Tip] Fix App Associations in Sense 3.6/4.0

It seems that because of an Apple lawsuit, all links (YouTube, Play Store, etc) open in the web browser instead of their respective apps. It no longer gives an option to choose like it did in gingerbread. This drove me nuts and I searched around the internet for a fix. I hope this helps someone with the same problem.
1) Delete HtcLinkifyDispatcher.apk using System Tuner or Root Explorer (apk located in /system/app). Note: Freezing the apk won't work, it needs to be removed.
2) Reboot phone
3) Clear defaults for browser in Settings/Apps

So THAT is why.. I always wondered if I could safely remove that APK from my old rom, now I wish I had. Like apple owns the RIGHTS to apps getting utilized.. I'll probably figure it out later, but this doesn't actually break the app association function in system settings right?
Mainly this post is a bump for your thread, this is good to know, and I think this apk is still being included in all the roms..
You can also remove the app using titanium backup.

The app associations in the settings is incomplete. Try opening a YouTube link on your phone without this tweak and it will force it open in the browser instead of giving it an option to open it in the YouTube app.
The reason HTC added the app associations in the settings menu is to get around an Apple patent that is being enforced by the ITC (thus the delay in customs for HTC ONE X at the US customs). Apple owns a patent which allows intelligent app associations by knowing which app to open by reading the link. HTC lost that in the courts so we get a workaround that is not as good as the old option.
This is not a big deal for most people but I hate the YouTube mobile site and would rather want my YouTube links to open in the app.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA
Mine still opens in the browser, even after clearing caches, to be honest, I think the app htclinkify or whatever the name is happens to be the app that links contacts, but I may be wrong.
Well guess I'm the only unlucky one, lol.

You sir, are a flippin' genius! Also, Apple are a bunch of asshats, but that's nothing new.
Just curious, those who have completed this mod, can you click on a phone number or email (check both please) and the phone bring up either the dialer or new email to compose? I tested it and these stopped functioning as the links call the app that is renamed/deleted.
Thanks!!

Clicking phone number does bring up a dialer for me and clicking an email link brings up an option to choose.
Try clearing the defaults for Mail/Gmail and dialer and that might solve your problem.

I'd have to test it, but I don't use gtalk.. but since gtalk is a purely google app, I doubt it would have problems from deleting a HTC specific file. I would go ahead and stop the app, delete the files in system settings, or if that doesn't work uninstall and reinstall the app..
As I said, there is no reason that gtalk should have problems after this..
I just tried this and none of the links open now. When I try for example to open a link from Reddit News, nothing happens. It doesn't open it with youtube app or the browser. Nothing happens at all
EDIT: Seems like freezing the app with titanium backup doesn't work. I uninstalled it and it works fine now
Thanks OP

I found the same to be true about freezing the app.
From what I have experienced, this occurs with the stock browser. I installed Dolphi Browser and I am able to open maps with the maps/navigation app, as well as click numbers and it opens in the phone app. Maybe something to consider.
Sort of easy fix is to install the google chrome beta and make that default. When i click on links on that browser (or even facebook) it asks again. Thank GOD!!!
Question. I don't really mind the fact that the linkify dispatcher exists, and the benefits of removing it don't outweigh the drawbacks for me. But I am darn tired of seeing it showing up in my multitasking menu. Looks unprofessional and tacky.
So, my question is: how can I hide HTCLinkifyDispatcher from the multitasking menu without actually removing it?

I've yet to see a benefit to keeping it, so I don't know why you'd want to keep it. Remove it, then it is a non issue.

Verizon apparently found out how to block the "Disable" for apps...

I had a Galaxy Nexus from the time it launched until about a month ago. I switched to the RAZR Maxx and love the phone, but couldn't wait for ICS. Having gotten it today I have to say I'm once again super happy with my device!
Only downside? No Disable button on many of the Verizon/Motorola apps. One of the things I love most about ICS has been disabled by Verizon I wonder if it would be possible to re-enable the option, or would it just be better to use Titanium to backup/freeze? Really sad.
Anyone else really disliking this?
I know it's not a solution but can you hide the app in the app drawer. I too just got the maxx yesterday after straight trading my gnex for it.

If you use Titanium Backup to convert the apps to user applications from the menu by long pressing the app, then you should have control over them again.

Then I guess it's a good thing I never said that "None" of the apps have a disabled button, eh?
Currently I count 12 applications that I want to disable. Most for battery life, but some purely because they get in the way (I'd like to reduce the number of buttons in places and keep certain things from running in the background and consuming resources).
I guess, for now, the only option is Titanium Backup until someone finds a way of enabling the button on all apps.

I have been able to disable any app I wanted. If it won't let you once you drag it to "app info" because "disable" doesn't pop up in the box, then uninstall updates for the app and then disable. This worked for all the apps I couldn't directly disable.
If you go to the app info, You should see "Force close" and "disable".
If it isn't there, then maybe wait for a newer version of ICS. Trust me, it is still there
Just want to know, what are the features that you love on ics but disabled in Verizon razr ics??

What's the problem w backup assistant? Just don't log into it. It won't use resources. How much more battery would it really give you. I'd like to disable Backup Assistant too because even if you've never logged into it, it is always running in the background.
I can understand that but I think y'all are going a little overboard thinking you are going to notice a large difference. These are my attatched screen shots of running services for today and battery affected by them. Ba+ uses 3mb and doesn't even show up in battery usage as a real drain at all. Seems like your splitting hairs. If 3mb ram is really that important just use the 1 click root and freeze all with titanium.
I'm not talking **** so please dont misunderstand, it just seems like a lot of effort. Leave it alone and not logging into it won't hurt. I get 5-6 hours of screen on time on 4g. Solid benchmark scores. Great running phone and ba+ isn't even a concern.

Who said there's a problem with it? I want to disable it...why does it matter my reasoning? The truth is, I just like running a clean ship. I like keeping minimal applications open and minimal processes running. It's not because I want to save a lot of battery or CPU, it's just that I want it to be easier to manage directly. I'm not sure why people are trying to dissuade this type of thinking...this forum exists for people that want to customize their devices.

Ahh, you must not have read any of the posts on this topic (including the first one). I know exactly how to do it using Titanium (both by doing it through the app or switching them to User Apps and doing it through the system), but I was looking for an alternative way to do it natively. I'd rather do it natively because I like the easier management available through Android. A higher level of reading comprehension would have saved you the trouble of posting.
As for the "What apps do you want to remove?" question, here's a short list:
Apps (the verizon app)
Backup Assistant+ (all 5 of them)
Device Setup
DLNA
Downloads
Emergency Alerts
Face Unlock
Flickr Authenticator
Guided Tours
In Case of Emergency
Kaixin001 Authenticator
LastFM Authenticator
Mobile Hotspot
Motion Detector
MotoCast ID
Motorola Dock Service (and the helper service along with it)
My Files
My Gallery
My MotoCast
My Music
Orkut Authenticator
Photobucket Authenticator
Quickoffice
Smart Actions
Smart Actions FW
Social Location
Social Sharing
Vehicle Mode
Verizon Remote Diagnostics
Video Calling
Webtop
So, as you can see, it's more than 1 or 2 apps that I want to remove. None of them make a real impact on my battery life or CPU usage, but together they would free up a bit of both and make the phone just run cleaner (which I like). I've always done it through Titanium, but with my Nexus I was happy to be able to do *ANY* of it through the Android apps dialog. Verizon sticking their grubby fingers in there and removing that ability is an annoyance to me.

That will probably do it, but if not, you can either A) uninstall anything you installed, or B) (recommended) do a factory reset, start from scratch, and don't install ANYTHING until you see if the phone is ok. Assuming it is, then you can add apps back a few at a time until you find the culprit. Or with a stock experience if it keeps happening, take it back for a new one
I would do a backup and the do a factory reset.
Would doing a factory reset break root? Since I have already done a nandroid, would I be able to restore apps and app data only after the factory reset?
via Galaxy S III
To my experience NO I just factory reset and still see superuser under "all apps"

Finally someone got the same issues as mine. I got mine fixed. The main problem is the google account. No matter how many times you do factory reset, error will show again and again.
Try this and see if this work.
Goto settings --> Accounts and Sync.
go through each email account, make sure "Sync Internet" "Sync google play books" "Sync google play movies" are UNCHECK!
restart your phone.
That might solve the problem
Thanks everyone for the comments I will give it a try and see what works and I will let you know.

I hope that works lol, I have had that issue since out of the box.
I have a Rogers Galaxy S3 and mine began doing it yesterday, while in the waiting room of the dentist office.
The phone became rather warm and battery life went to crap. And then my phone started throwing up the same message. I dod not install or uninstall anything just before it began.
It was ok last night, but then it did it again this morning, while I was browsing through my tweet timeline in plume.
I had a similar issue on mine when rooted. I ended up having to delete the whole data partition and start again from scratch. It was a corruption somewhere in there causing it.

Pop Up Ads All Over

I have just, in the past couple of days, developed a pretty serious issue with pop-up ads appearing all over the place on my phone. They come in two different ways. 1st is when an ad pops up over the top of another app. This has happened with GO SMS and with the Facebook app for sure. I can't recall what other apps it has happened with, but I don't get the impression that the ad is related to the app I'm in. I've had them pop up on the home screen as well.
Here is an example of a pop-up ad when I opened GO SMS:

I also have it happen where I open my browser (I use Chrome) and it will automatically launch a new tab, then the tab will act as a redirect and send me to the Play Store for another app (basically sending me to the download/install page for an app).
I don't recall installing any apps just before this started happening. I believe that my app list is the same before and after this issue, but I'll keep looking. I have not rooted and am using the Nova Pro launcher, if that helps at all.
How can I figure out what is causing this and, most importantly, how do I make it go away? A factory reset is an option, but I'd like to keep that as a last resort if possible.
Thank you for any and all help.
Try downloading air push detector it may help.

Air Push Detector said it is not necessary for Android 4.1+. I ran it, though, and told it to scan anyways. It didn't find anything.
It is driving me nuts that I can't nail down where these are coming from.
Try uninstalling gosms. If I remember right. When I tried that crapp it was full of ads

I can try that. If that is the offender, that'll be a real bummer. Used it for about a year, now, between my S3 and Note 3 and never had an issue. I got pretty comfy with using it as a messaging app, too.
That said, if it is going to cause pop-ups like this, it isn't worth it.

You recently change a theme in it or something?
Many of the "free" addons to Go* products are full of this crap.

I had an add on, but it was from a while ago. I can't really think of a thing I changed between it not happening and happening.
I have deleted GO SMS, though, and have not experienced the issue since. Looking like that was the culprit. Now I just need to find an acceptable SMS app.

Titanium Backup Elements Safe to Freeze for Better Battery, More Free RAM

If you like me, you have a rooted Galaxy Mega, and just want less bloatware, better battery, and extra 100-200MB of free RAM, want to keep your stock ROM and not deal with instaling a custom one, those are 120 elements you can safely freeze with Titanium Backup if you dont use any of them offcourse, and be sure your phone will work just fine but snappier... when i restart my Mega, and clear the RAM after everything loads, my used RAM is 320MB/1.32GB
Here is a screenshot list:

ya, just freeze, dont delete, is diferend, you can freeze all that and then delete titanium backup, itll stay frozen unless you install TB back and unfreeze it. try it, guarantee it wont brick your phone. been doin it with all my phones, check my profile see how many of those guides i made thru the years with all my diferend phones lol
Thanks!!! It seems much faster.

is the same thing, but half of those things arent allowed to be turned off from the apo manager..
If you are rooted, buy Titanium Backup if you havent already, the best purchase you can make if u own android phones, as before you freese/delete anything, you can simply back the ROM up, and if something isnt working just restore.
also as i found out, when i was on T-Mobile bloated ROM, some of T-Mo branded bloatware was turning back on by itself on phone restart after turning it off from the app manager...
a lot of those elwments are safe to DELETE with TB... ATT or T-Mo software and Samsung bloatware are some of those...
rest i recomend just leave frozen..
lmk if u guys need any other info.. i have been into the extreme with some of my ROMs i had one debloated was running perfectly normal with what i need only on 32 elements haha, i think is one of the Threats i made named "Extreme Bloatware Remowal" if u look at my profile..

I deleted a handful, rhapsody, tmo junk and things like trip visor (or whatever it's called). The rest I froze... One day I will back up how it is and try deleting things bit by bit.
I did not freeze a few things you posted because I actually need them. For ex : text to speech, resource manager and tags, to name handful.
I am sure the email client uses a ton but I have not seen anything that is as good, shame. k9 is ok but needs constant sync.
I also froze a few things you did not.
Thanks for the guide.

Aye.. first and foremost, you gota make sure you only freese what you WONT use offcourse... i dont use any fints lets say, i freese em all, dont want em to load on device startup and take RAM.. same with Wallpapers or Widgets.. i dont use any, i freeze em all...
And about the bricking.. i gue the phone needs some of the elements to be present on restart to boot... even it the are frozen/turned off is diferend that just been deleted...
Not every Android phone is like that tho, i had phone i delete everything just leave 35 elements and is working fine... not the Mega i guess..
Amazing.. Really good looking. But i want to know how it's possible to safely freeze with 120 elements Titanium Backup..
