I don't seem to receive SMS messages until I make a phone call. Anyone seen this before?
Never had that happen to me, but can you give some extra details? Which SMS app are you using, APN settings are correct if there are in-app changes you can make?
Stock messaging app with stock apn settings
Do you have any app installed that may prevent it from working normally?
I've looked around and it seems to randomly happen to a lot of people for unknown reasons. Wish there was more info but it looks like your best options would be the basic ones.
Clear messaging cache and restart.
If that doesn't do it, factory reset and slowly install apps to see if one is causing you issues.
If that fails, try a new SIM/help from someone in store that knows more about technical problems.
Cadcamaro has good advice.
I'll add that you should check your Connection Settings. There are a few more options on what can/will dominate how you're connecting to WiFi or Cell Service or going to sleep. Also check you battery saver settings and see if removing them helps.

I've bought an Xperian X10 mini for my daughter. She loves it. All her friends love it. The iPhone owners want one! (Big) but.....
She is not a heavy user, and so put her on a PAYG contract. However it is running out of credit very quickly, and when I checked the usage it is nothing she is doing, but some background app that is regularly (hourly) connecting with GPRS and doing... well something, but I have no idea what :-S The info on the usage (from Orange) is (e.g.)

We have tried disabling as many sync type options / apps as we can find (e.g. Timescape) but it is still happening, and is driving me up the wall.
The reason I am even more annoyed is that most of the time it is at home, and connected (apparently successfully) to our wifi, so why the hell is it using GPRS anyway when there is an active wifi conection?! :-S
I have tried everything I can think of, and short of turning it off there seems little I can do. Can anyone help please??
- Which app is doing this?
- How do I configure it to either
i) use Wifi (preferred - would rather not disable functionality if possible) or
ii) stop auto syncing every hour?

There are a couple of apps out there that can monitor data usage per app. But so far, all those that I found require Froyo (2.2) and above. I'm guessing your using the stock SE ROM so that's 2.1.
But there is an alternative.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Click Usage Statistics
Click Battery history
Click the Other usage dropdown
Click network usage
That should show you which apps are using your network connection. But both wifi and 3g; at least it gives you an idea.
As to how to prevent use, you could go to each app and customize syncing options if at all possible. If you just want to block an app from using the network totally, I suggest LBE Privacy Guard, free on the market.

EDIT: BTW, the phone shouldn't be using GPRS when wifi is available. That's weird. First time I've heard of that happening.

On the wifi (and yes it is weird - and annoying!) could it be "connected" but without a "proper" connection? Is there some way I can check, e.g. switch off GPRS and see if can see www?
Just tried what you suggested (disconnected the internet from my wifi router, but router still on), and my X10MP didn't even attempt to connect to GPRS despite using apps which use data. The apps returned errors.
Maybe your X10M fails to connect to the wifi? I actually have no idea what's going on.

well it carried on despite various fiddling. so I did a factory reset.... no accounts set up no sync etc - factory reset - and it's still happening??!! so something SE/Android is doing it, but I still have no idea what? Surely I'm not the only person with this issue??!! :S :S :S

very simple fix, go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > uncheck Data enabled.
that way mobile data (gprs,edge,3g) is turned off and your problem is solved. If you're using stock SE software, theres a Data Traffic widget that lets you toggle the Data Enabled setting on and off easily.
Sync is not the only thing using data traffic, background apps can too, as well as some of the apps she might be using. ( some apps have adverts )
Thanks. Had also been nosing on SE site, and am obviously not the only person with this problem. I unchecked the box a few hours ago, am hoping that that cures it. I've also found anotehr PAYG plan with the same provider that has unlimited internet, so may switch to that. So one way or another will be resolved.
However I am still left annoyed. This ****** device is supposed to be under MY contorl not the other way round! Not knowing what is doing this, or (and because of this) not being able to stop it is ****** annoying! As is the fact it (whatever "it" or "they" are) is using GPRS when there is an open wifi connection!!

If shes not using the data at all, you can try to delete all access points - GPRS,WAP, etc. even MMS...with no APN, no connection, no access to net, no credit loss...Just go to settings-wireless networks-mobile networks-access point names-click on any of them-press menu button and choose delete...Im working for the operator so I solve this kind of problems every day :-D It is easy if you dont want to use net in mobile at all but still I think you should flash it with SEUS because your problem is weird.
That's the thing - she does use data. so want it to be enabled. but the vast majority of the time is at home with a perfectly good wifi connection, so why won't it use that?!
Anyway am swapping to a PAYG tarriff promising "free" internet, so will see how that goes.

I use my phone daily in a non-Verizon network, so having Data Roaming enabled is very important for me. The new ROM I installed, however, does not have a menu option for enabling/disabling Data Roaming.
Does anyone know of a way to do this through script? Or maybe there is something that can be changed in "build.prop" (or another file) that would change the default setting of Data Roaming disabled to be enabled?

Thank you, but that isn't quite what I'm looking for. It looks like it could possibly work, but I I'm looking for a way to permanently turn the Data Roaming on. I don't care if I need to edit the ROM files before I flash them or if there is some sort of hack I can install/perform after the ROM is running.
Maybe there is a way to install the AOSP or stock version of the component that controls this? Does anyone know what component controls the data roaming?

I have tried modifying build.prop with many different settings that I have found in other threads but nothing has worked so far. I need to re-enable data roaming manually maybe 20 times a day.

I sent a mail to the author of Roam Control asking if his app is able to do this but still no answer
I finally took the problem in my own hands and managed to make a small app that re-enables data roaming at the touch of a button.
I needs to be installed as a system app for it to work, but it works! :laugh:

I want to permanently enable data roaming but several Google searches have led me to only this thread. I have just downloaded Roaming Control and will tinker with it to see if it solves the issue of the constant nagging data roaming warnings.
I am confused. In my Jellybean settings there's a selection field titled "Show roaming reminder". Even though I have set it to "Never" it still gives a data roaming warning every single time. Either I am misinterpreting the use of that selection field or it's flat out broken or disabled by the carrier.
I have agalaxy s2 and have the GPRS pack enabled from Vodafone.
Every 2 minutes my phone flashes with a message about the usage of gprs data and how much i have left. This causes screen to come on and phone to vibrate. This message is similar to the balance messages sent by network after each call (not an sms, just message with OK button)
Any option to disable these messages. Everyone i know if being annoyed with this.
Vodafone India tells me they dont know how these messages can be stopped.
Is there an app or something that can block these ?
This is happening because you might have installed Juice Defender or similar software that switches off your 3G/Edge (data) connection when your screen is turned off. There are 2 options for you to try:
1. Ensure that your data connection is always ON even after you turn off the screen. OR
2. If you are rooted, try this app: Prepay Widget

Hi I would like to see a solution for this too. Not that I get those messages now and then, but whenever sending an sms I get a box like that telling I have been changed 0.00 rs which is actually annoying. I will try the app, however there any other way than rooting to stop the pop up?

A tech rep saying it can't be done is a worthless response.
At the very least you could investigate options like:
Removing the process via Root Explorer (or similar app)
Freeze whatever the app or process is that is doing this in Titanium Backup.
Flashing to a stock (non-branded) firmware that doesn't include this crap.
Flashing to a custom firmware that doesn't include this crap
Its not a installed app that is doing this ! The service provider sends a flash message with the usage details.
Isnt there any apps that can block these. I'm sure it will be very popular with Vodafone users if someone makes one.
There should be some kind of MOD to push the pop up message mentioned by the OP in the first post to the notification bar at least.

Hello folks. Been lurking on the forums, grabbing what info and software and tips I needed for a couple years, but never had a need to post something. Now, the problem has been described already in the topic title, but I'll elaborate.
Somewhere in a period of 24-36 hours of being turned on continuously, my phone (a Sony Xperia Go with Cyanogenmod 11 running on it, but the problem was there before with stock rom too) needs to be rebooted, else I can't receive or send text messages or call. The text messages simply won't be sent and I don't get a waiting tone (or any sound for that matter) when I try to call and it'll eventually fail.
Now when I still used a stock rom, I'd see that I had lost network connection, but on the current Cyanogenmod build I still have full bars. This issue I then have to fix by rebooting my phone, as I stated. I have not tried setting it to airplane mode for a quick fix, but in all honesty, I'm looking for a permanent fix, not a temporary one. And this also seems to be an issue that isn't just with my type of phone.
I tried looking for a solution already several times, but all I could find that described my problem was this thread. I have not tried ordering a new sim card from T-Mobile yet, since that costs money over here in the Netherlands, and I wanted to make sure I had exhausted every possible software fix before trying to fiddle with hardware.
Hope this is enough information for you guys to at least tell me something. Even if it's "yup, you're boned."
Gentle bump. Apologies for doing so, but I'm fairly certain I'm not the only one with this problem.
I'm having this same issue. I'm running the latest stable build of CyanogenMod on Maguro (CM11/Snapshot7). I push my SMS's through Google Voice (using CM Voice+ which is now integrated into the systems menu). I didn't notice exactly when the problem started because I have Hangouts and SMS integrated in the Hangouts app, and chat with people using both all the time. I do know that The problem didn't start after a CM update, it happened in the middle of the day while the phone was on as far as I can tell. Since then I have tried clearing caches, updated to the newest nightly release, and so forth to no avail. Rather than rebooting, I can just turn on airplane mode and turn it off to get my SMSs, but still quite a bother.

Nope. I ended up having to get a new phone, as it was getting worse and worse, up to a point where I had to reset it every hour. I just assumed it was a hardware problem and got a new phone.
I did a factory reset / complete reinstall and still have the problem.
After the reset and recovery, I assumed it was a telephony issue and messed with the APN and data settings as much as I could, including checking and editing the default databases. No avail.
I uninstalled Google Voice and turned off Voice+ and SMS's began working with my SIM number. Bingo! So I started messing with Google settings. Log out, log in. Reinstall apps, etc. I eventually discovered that whenever I tried to clear the cache on my Google Play Services my Settings would crash. So i figured that I had a corrupted Google Play Services, which was preventing my phone from syncing with Google Servers except on reboot or connection refresh. I later realized that I should have been tipped off to this by the orange wifi/wireless icons in my Settings dropdown.
I couldn't uninstall or update Google Play Services so I just downloaded the latest version of CM GAPPS, cleared app and Dalvik caches, and flashed GAPPS into place.
Bing, bang boom... it still didn't work. Icons still orange, Google Play Services still crashes when I try to open it from Settings>Apps.
Not sure what to do next except maybe another factory reset, and instead of using Titanium Backup to restore, I will just load a fresh version of CM11 and not update it. ??
I own a Galaxy S II that runs CM 11. I usually get a brown colored icon for mobile network symbol in my power menu most of the time. I tried doing some googling and I found that something called "fast dormancy" may/may not have something to do with it. Firstly, I don't know if SGS2 supports FD. Secondly, I want to know whether this is the root cause. I edited my build.prop file to add FD property but it changed nothing.
When the icon is brown, I will get a window of few seconds where I will receive WhatsApp notifications (this happens after every reboot I do with the 3G switched on!). Even though, I receive notifications from messengers, I am not able to send messages. Forget about accessing social networks! This thing has been bugging me for two weeks now. What's the fix? I'm quite sure that something other than FD is responsible for this.
Reboots didn't help.
Putting the mobile on and off flight mode didn't work.
Please help.

I don't know or your provider supports fast dormancy I suggest to try to turn it off to see or that's the cause.
As far as I know the brown/orange icon means that you don't have connection to google servers/internet. It's odd that you are receiving but you can't send anything. As far as I have my computer knowledge, you've got some setting issue. Like it receives the data from the server but it sends it probably to the wrong location. Is there somewhere in the settings where you could enter manually your 3g settings from your provider? I can't specific tell you how since I don't own a smartphone for 5 months already and I never really used 3g.
If setting flighmode on and off doesn't work then I still think it's an issue just like you need to set on somethings your email server like from which server it receives stuff and to which server you are sending stuff.

I tried adding those parameters to turn off FD in build.props file! It didn't work! Maybe I should ask the network provider for fresh settings !!!

Yes I should ask that, you could also maybe try first another custom rom to verify it's your provider, But the orange icon means that you are already connected but there are still some issues.
Ask them for your problem and I hope for you that your problem gets solved:good: 2 weeks is a long time so they can't ignore you.
