USB-C to HDMI on 6P - Tried it, as expected, didn't work. - Nexus 6P General

I bought a USB-C to HDMI adapter through the Google Store, as I have a laptop with USB-C (and no HDMI Out or DIsplay Port) that I need to mirror to my 65" TV. Works great for that. (Miracast and Chromecast frequently drop the mirroring connection for me).
Just for sh*ts and giggles, I tried it on the 6P to see if it would work, even though I knew it wasn't supposed to. I can confirm that there is no video out on the 6P through the USB-C port. TV says there is no signal from the 6P.
Nothing earth shattering here. I just figured there are some people out there where in the back of their minds they were still wondering whether it might work. Put your minds at ease, it does not.

Bummer, why does your Chromecast drop signal, that sounds router related.

I know Google is really pushing Chromecast, but limiting people to 720p is just sad. I've tried the experimental 1080p ChromeCast from my laptop Chrome to my Sony KDL65W850C and it just produces a broken picture. The Nexus 5 had fantastic SlimPort that I used! It was amazing for movies or testing TV inputs. Heck, I even used it for VMware Horizon View and loved it! This is a feature that Google should put into all Nexus phones.

I had to get that off my chest.

I agree , i know the chromecast is decent, but to actually mirror you're entire display the slimport option was so superior , no frame drops etc . shame it doesn't have it, but oh well , maybe the nexus Nexus huh.

I'm doubting it. Google wants Cast to take over. I can see it from their POV. But the fact they want to call this PREMIUM and not having this feature...very disappointing.
I really do appreciate you trying this out. I was searching at work the other day for a USB-C to HDMI, but couldn't find one. Thanks for doing the needful!

It's not really HDMI that's supported. It's DisplayPort. And DisplayPort is already supported in the USB Type-C spec. Google just didn't implement it for whatever insane reason.
Check out this image. It shows that the USB Type-C ALTERNATE MODE uses pins A2, A3 and A10, A11. These can be for either high speed USB3, or for DisplayPort.

Thought type C was capable by default.

It is shocking to me that a 2015 flagship phone does not support video out via dongle to HDMI cable. My old S3 and HTC M7 do. All my iPhones did and still do. I believe the Samsung S6 does not support video out either.

I thought this was a must have at first. As it turns out. I never really used it on my old phone. Loving the chromecast though.

Though I'm sure it won't help, I sent feedback to Google regarding why "Enable Wireless Display" isn't available under the "Cast" display setting. What a crock!
I guess it's Chromecast Dongle or bust. All smartphones today should have wireless display capabilities - smh.

The spec allows for it. However, it's up to the hardware designer to actually implement it. Google decided not to. Bad idea in my opinion.

From what I understand, it's a USB 3.1 feature. Though the device uses a USB C connector, the data path is still USB 2.0.

Its actually not a USB 3.1 feature. It's part of the USB Type C spec called "Alternate Mode". DisplayPort would use the same pins that could be used to enable USB 3.0 to push DisplayPort data instead of USB3.0 data. Its a one or the other deal with USB Type C. Either DisplayPort or USB 3.0/3.1. USB 2.0 is always present.

HDMI Adapter

So I recently purchased this MicroUSB adapter for my Galaxy note. It works perfect most of the time but sometimes have random HDMI signal loss when messing around with the device. Many other people have experienced this with other MHL adapters with other devices, so I figured it could just be the software. Overall the whole experience isnt as smooth as I assumed(lag?).
Does anyone know how to just render graphics through HDMI and not on the Note Display?
I bought one:
A little cheaper and works great, very few issues with the signal drop out...
As far as i know - it only works in mirror mode - whats on the Note is on the TV.
Apparently this HDMI cable charges the phone while it's in use.

Yes, but you must connect a charger/power source to it to work, kinda like a power injector. Still accomplishes the goal, you obviously are getting no juice from your TV or monitor.
I use THIS by Menotec. So far, about 20 movies, no signal drops yet.

TVs that support MHL can power and recharge devices through the HDMI port. It's the best part about Mobile High-definition Link. My guess is that product isn't really MHL.

Then perhaps this is a convience feature for TVs that do not fully support MHL and will accept the HDMI signal but not passing power downstream. One way to find out, someone has to test this theory.
Anyone with a Samsung UN55D8000 or UN55D6300 TV? I know those have MHL support. Unfortunately, I have the prior year's model.

It says here you need adequate power to drive the adapter. Maybe while using your device, you drained some power. Also maybe the AWG on your cable had something to do with it too.

HDMI Cable Compatability

Hey guys I'm wondering if any of you have encountered this cable before
http://www.motorola.com/us/accessory-family-page-1/1080p-HDMI-Cable-(15ft)/15-ft-hdmi-cable.html
I bought 3, with the idea to use them with my Nexus 6 but low and behold they actually don't fit. Any idea Why? I'm sure its made for a certain brand of phones, (I thought Motorola) but apparently not.

That actually says that it is an HDMI cable, not an MHL-HDMI cable or other similar such cable that has HDMI on one end and uUSB on the other. Looks like it has a micro-HDMI on one end, and a regular-HDMI on the other. Nexus 6 does NOT have a micro-HDMI socket.
Also remember that Motorola sells things that are NOT EVEN PHONES, like video baby monitors. Maybe some of their video baby monitors have HDMI output so you can plug it into a TV and swap input when you need to check on the little one.
In any case, you'd be better off with a chromecast than a cable. No point in tying yourself with a wire when you can just select "cast screen" from the main pulldown menu.
That is for the Motorola XOOM. The XOOM tablet has a micro-HDMI output port. My Nexus 10 tablet has it also. It's not for the Nexus 6.

Actually.... you know that you can set up a chromecast to connect to your "android wifi tether" AP? You will need to use a different device to configure the chromecast than the one acting as an AP, but once done, you just activate wifi tethering, plug in the chromecast, and there you have it without even needing a local wifi network!

Could be. However....
The *hardware* is definitely there -- mhl/slimport is built in to the SoC, and there must be a USB switch in order for it to even select between different USB modes. The only actual question is whether or not it is wired correctly. I *HATE* it when hardware vendors wire things wrong.

Nope. EVERY uUSB plug *IS* created equal.
MHL does not use any pins in the USB plug that are otherwise not there. USB plugs, whether they are MHL or not, have precisely 5 pins;
+5VDC, GRD, D+, D-, ID.
ALL of the pins are required and NOT OPTIONAL.
D+ and D- are the actual data pins.
+5 and GRD are POWER.
ID is the "type selection" pin.
Behind the plug itself, is a SWITCH, which is controlled by the state of the ID pin. The amount of resistance between the ID pin and GRD determines what "mode" the switch is in. And yes, there is a switch, since it is well established that the device DOES support USB OTG.
So on one side of the switch, is a USB plug. On the other side is USB HOST, USB OTG, MHL, TTY, and a bunch of other kinds of functions. Like I said, ID determines what the USB plug is actually connected to.
But like I said, I can't tell you if the MHL wires between the switch and the SoC are physically present.

Samsung's MHL adapters don't usually work for other devices. I bought what turned out to be a Samsung only cable a while back, when I plugged it into my HTC DNA it would not fit. I ended up grinding down the connector so I could get it plugged in and it still didn't work. Traded it to my boss for a regular MHL cable and that worked fine. I have not tried it in my G3 however, with the Chromecast and Miracast options I just haven't needed to.
that's ridiculous, there should be a universal mhl adapter. The reason I want one is so I could play emulators that are on the phone. If I did that wirelessly with miracast and chromecast, I get bad latency issues

I know it's definitely ridiculous, Samsung is getting just as bad as Apple about proprietary connections. If I get a chance when I get home I will try the adapter I have for my HTC and see if it works. I have a WD TV Live box that supports Miracast and it's terrible, but the Chromecast seems to work a lot better. I can see latency being and issue with games for sure though.

interesting, I may go ahead and pick one up knowing that it's compatible with more than just my device.

Does anyone own, or have tried a USB-C to HDMI adapter/converter for the G5?

Just curious if the G5 supports wired-display-out since the G5 still has features that competitors have dropped. Supposedly the G4 still had it despite competitors giving up on it, but USB Type C supports display, so USB Type-C to HDMI converters and adapters are a thing.
Just curious if G5 kept wired display-out since the G5 also kept the removable battery and IR blaster.
I too am curious about this. I've been hoping that since the G5 is able to send 3D video to the 360 VR that it would also support standard hdmi as well, but that may or may not be the case.
It bugs me that phones seem to be dropping wired video out options in favor of wireless/chromecast. I mean I like the chromecast and all, but I'd still like the option of a wired dock - Windows phones with Continuum sound pretty cool - and I'm still hopeful we'll be able to do something similar with Ubuntu on our phones someday, but the disappearance of wired options for video out concerns me in this regard. I know wireless is the future, but I don't like losing wired as a fallback option.

I'd love to know this as well. I have a Pico-projector that I use when camping and I'd prefer not to have to take a tablet along.

I don't get mine until Friday (uk) but it seems it does :
( I can't post links )search YouTube for "Coms USB C to HDMI LG G5"
No idea what he is saying though!
I believe the VR unit connects thru it too, so as that is 2 screens, it makes sense.
Can't find many (any?) Usb-c to HDMI adapters. Would a micro-usb adapter do with a cheap microusb-c converter?

Looks like it does, but there's at least some output lag; it's not perfectly in-sync between phone and HDMI tv. That will be a little disappointing.

Yes I have one and it works perfect 4 HDMI out to your TV set the one I bought was the Apple dongle for the HDMI out from their laptops and again it works perfect very pleased with the performance
I tried a slimport adapter/lead, but it only had a microusb connector so I tried a microusb-usb c converter. No luck
Just ordered an apple type lead as suggested above so will see how that goes

This would be especially useful for cord cutters if you can still charge the phone while it was connected. Or if someone can find a way to give the G5 qi charging without using the type c port
Ok y'all seem to know more about this stuff so.. Could someone link me to what I need to hook my G5 to my TV
Something like this ?

I use a device called a netgear ptv 3000. It is used as a Mira cast device. Well, it used to be called Mira cast on phones. Now it's called screen sharing. I think it's actually been called screen sharing since KitKat or lollipop. Either way, I've used this with a Nexus 4, Nexus 5, g2, note 5, and the g5. The latency is bad on the note 5, but almost prefect with the other phones. It will display anything you have on your phone to the TV wirelessly. You just plug it in to the HDMI and a power outlet, activate screen sharing on the G5 and you're good to go. A negative side is that you can't put your phone to sleep so it could kill the battery faster. A way to prolong the battery is by putting the brightness all the way down on the screen of the phone. It won't effect the brightness on the TV. One last thing, when you first get the ptv3000. Be sure to update the device before you try and use it or it won't work. The udate is necessary. There's instructions on how to do update in the box. I got mine for around $40 a couple years back. Hope this helps. Peace.

to be honest.. chromecast is doing extremely well so far on my G5.
this thread is about physical connection to the tv / beamer though.
My bad. Just throwing out an idea.. Nevertheless, the netgear is nice because you don't need Wi-Fi like Chromecast to use it and it mirrors everything..

Nah I think it was on point. Does the same thing and bypasses the need for rigging a cable.

in fact, that VR device gets its video stream just via that type-c...no problem with that, what a waste if LG give it a type c but only functioning like a microusb port.
I can confirm too that the apple macbookair lead works. USB c to HDMI.
Thanks for suggesting it. Now I just need to find a way of powering/charging it whilst using the lead

Official adapter for LG G5:
SlimPort 4K HDMI adapter (USB-C)
Model: SP7101
Was there any update on any of your tests?

MHL or USB-C video support?

I know this is not a popular feature these days, but I figure I would ask. Does this support any sort of video output via a cable? MHL dongle, USB-C to HDMI dongle, etc.
I would love to hook it up to a TV to play emulator games with no input lag.
Sorry I can not answer your question but I got to say that usb-c video out is criminally underrated. It is such an amazing and hassle free feature. I really hope it catches on. If you ask me its because for some reason its not advertised. I only know about it because I Googled it out of curiosity. 2 days and $15 later I had one of my own.

I would love to have this feature too. Would love to run something like Sentio Desktop or better still MIUI Desktop Mode (once they implement it). I would even buy this phone solely for this purpose.
I have the same question, can we use a cable usb c to hdmi in order to connect poco f1 to a tv.
The snapdragon 845 doas support it so it should work
But it doesn't work on some Sony smartphones with the supported soc
bro to clarify, actually usb type c is 3.0 port, and it does support reverse charging, dex, audio peripherals etc (according to USB corporation). but midrange and budget flagships like poco, oneplus does not provide 3.0 connectivity via those ports. they put a c type look-a-like port but it is micro usb wiring done on board. you can charge using any type c branded cable and transfer data but at 2.0 speed and the features you asked may not work. only limited manufacturers like lg, sony, samsung only provide real type c 3.0 or 3.1 port connectivity.
hope this clarifies something.

Does it work on Poco?
USB C video doesn't work. Already tested. There's already a thread and few users like me tested with such accessories. MHL also doesn't work (not tested by me but some other user) search general section.
I wonder if it can be enabled by software, though. There are much older phones without USB-C that can do it. Shouldn't USB 2 provide enough bandwidth?

As far as I understand it's a hardware issue, as in the hardware doesn't support it. I'm sure the USB type C port is just for charging and file transfer at USB 2.0 speeds
