Virtual Reality Headsets? - Nexus 6 Accessories

Anyone know of any good headsets? I got the white Vigica one from Amazon but the buttons kept getting smushed making the volume go all the way up or all the way down.
If you're rocking one, which one?

I have the view master by mattle and it works perfect. Any questions just ask
purchased at target for 25$
Edit: no volume button smashing, but they are easily accessible to change volume if needed

Headsets
Hello,
There's an unfortunate truth about the Nexus 6... It has a 6" screen. The majority of headsets are being geared towards 5.5" and smaller. I've purchased and used 3 headsets with my Nexus 6 though, so I can share some experience there.
The first headset was the Blisstime Google Cardboard
One of the cheapest headsets on the market
Comes with foam to cover the uncomfortable cardboard bits
Solid quality cardboard
Comes with (admittedly useless) strap
DOES NOT FIT NEXUS 6.
As mentioned, I had to cut out additionally pieces of cardboard and tape here and there to make my Nexus 6 fit.
Second headset was another Cardboard one. IAMCARDBOARD 6"
Fits the phone perfectly
Allows a lot of light in because of it's wide form factor
The poor design of the front of the unit where the camera hole was cut out allows the cardboard to crush inwards within a few weeks of use
The Blisstime headset, although too small gave a much more immersive experience. I attribute this to the closer distance of the screen to my eyes, the much smaller amount of light let through and the foam to allow comfortable use.
The last headset I purchased was the IncrediSonic M700 VUE Series
Relatively comfortable
Good quality strap that holds the headset in a convenient location
Included remote works as cardboard magnet (trigger) (NOTE if you're trying to figure this out, it's the select button that works as the trigger.)
Overall, the high quality plastic doesn't quite make up for the fact that it's the exact same experience I will get with a $12 cardboard. There is nothing more immersive about this headset than the Blisstime or IAMCARDBOARD. In fact, as a developer, I don't even touch this headset anymore.
I purchased it with the sole intent of having a more attractive looking display unit; which I think it will do.

I second the Viewmaster. The phone won't fit with a case (Ringke slim), but that's the only downside I've noticed.

Glad you added that. Doesn't fit with unicorn beetle either.

I purchased the following Chinese one for $10 from Aliexpress. I'm happy with it and would highly recommend it.... especially for the price. Its based of of the original cardboard with the magnet but it works great with the nexus 6. They ship from China so it takes 2-3 weeks to arrive but it works great... "Quake for Google Cardboard" alone was worth it for me.

I got my cardboard 2.0 clone from aliexpress for ~$7.
If you have a cardboard one, you can cut out the volume and power button space so it doesnt interfere when you strap it in, thats what I did and its fine.
I had to customize mine with the google webapp provided. Else things were out of focus and I saw double. Now anything that shows VR through cardboard settings is fine, but standard videos downloaded from web are still pretty messed up when looking at range, I guess they are made just for oculus' settings?

I just use the free one Google gives away. Or get a free one from Verizon.

I'm interested in finding one that works well with the N6 as well.

+1 for Viewmaster. Readily available for $20. Use a bluetooth headset. I like that you have to hold it (not head mounted) as I don't want my son walking around the house with a headset on his head.

Brilliant Headphone Holder

Hi,
Am I the only one here who always struggles to find a good way to store my headphones? I usually wrap them around themselves, but this normally leads to kinks in the cables and a mass of knots
I just spotted something called "Cable Turtles". I can't believe how simple they are, or more importantly, that I have never seen them before!!
I have just ordered a small black one from here
When it arrives I will post my thoughts on it.
Cheers

Boy, those looks brilliant indeed. Will order one, I too have had some problems with where to store the cable. I hate wrapping
Bloomin' Royal Mail strikes have delayed the delivery of this fine product.
As soon as it arrives I will post my views for anyone who is interested!

Did you get these and how did you get on with them?

Hi B&B,
They did arrive in the end (thanks Royal Mail!).
Overall I love them, however I think that the small ones, despite being listed as "for headphones" are too small. They hold the cable fine, but they are not large enough to encase the whole headphone (see picture)
If I ordered again I would probably go for the medium size to be honest.
Cheers
Zippyioa
whatever happened to those things that your earphones came in that you wind up
this is back in the walkman days like 1997
pretty much all earphones used to come sold with one of those things

They are hard to find nowadays! AND the flat volume control bit on the headphones stops them rotating so they dont work for Hero headphones :-(

oh i didnt know there was a volume control on the hero headphones. didnt even open the bag or look at them. I figured id just use my cheap sennheiser cx300 anyway.
I actually bought the medium one and the headphones fit just about right. Could be a bit bigger as its a tight fit, but overall it works fine. Large would probably be overkill

[Q] Anyone tried putting ZU on a VR headset?

That 6.4" display seems to be great for a VR headset.

I got mine in the colorcross. Had to hacksaw the lips off one side which was easy and you can slide it in from the side.
Only problem is the images are slightly too far apart due to the size of the screen although it does work well in some apps
I actually tried mine with one of those cardboard vr headsets that I bought on Amazon. Works pretty well with some of the vr apps but I couldn't get the magnet switch to work. Again, the ultra was too big for it but I held it in place with one hand and the visuals were pretty awesome. I know they sell extra large kits, but not sure if I want to buy another one just yet.

Same here, bought the Colorcross Headset because it said would work with Phonoes & Tablets up to 7".
Yeah...sure...7". Not even the Z Ultra does fit in, had to cut some pieces out to make it fit. No chance that anything bigger than the ZU will ever fit.
Then there was the Problem with the lenses, because of the Size of the Display, they need to be further away from the screen and the space between those two lenses needs to be bigger, I managed to get them out of the Headset and glued them back in (about 3mm further back and 8mm further away from each other) - with a cardboard holder i made myself.
That "thing" looks horrible now, but it does the Job. Although, the experience isn't that great with the ZU because of the low DPI of the Screen.

Mo3d is amazing if you want to watch either 2d or 3d films with the ultra. You can decrease the ipd so the images are moved closer together.

Anyone take their N6 for a run or jog? Armband suggestions?

I often go for a run in the park and I've used my phone for music for the longest time. Now that I have a Nexus 6, it's a little too bulky to carry in my pocket. I can still use my old iPhone 4S as a decent MP3 player (minus internet, so no Play Music, iTunes, or Pandora stations), but I'd like to have only one device with me instead of two. Can anyone suggest a band or similar accessory so it doesn't fly off my person?
On a side note, what's everyone's luck with Bluetooth headphones? I have the Bose AE2W and it is magnificent, but on Android, the volume keys don't control the phone's volume (something that worked on iOS; iOS also somehow displayed the battery life of the headphones, but I don't mind not seeing that).
I use a waist belt to carry my phone on my runs. I picked mine up at a race when I picked up my race packet - I'm not sure the brand I have, but it is similar to this:

Have you looked into this one?

There are also the magnetic pouches. They basically fold over your waistband and are held in place by RE magnets. No experience with them, but I know they are out there.

Recommended Google Cardboard Sets

What are the best Google Cardboard sets in terms of features versus value you have found for the Nexus 6p?
Ideally, the phone would fit well and the set-up would include magnets, NFC, and a head strap. I am particularly interested in something that allows one to wear glasses at the same time as the set-up.

Following. I too am interested, and I wear glasses. Based on what I've read, the better units come with optical options for near and far sighted people. That would in theory negate the need for glasses? I have personally not used any of the VR units and have only recently become intrigued by them once I bought the 6P.
Hopefully someone will offer up some good options based on experience. While on the topic, what's the difference between Optimus Prime vs. using our phones? Or does the Optimus Prime use a phone? Have it's own screen? Do you have to buy "game/experience specific" titles? Or are there apps? Again, I'm new to the game.
I'm waiting for my Shinecone VR to come in, although it doesn't have a magnet. The advertised FOV is ~ 110*. I only have a Google cardboard at the moment, so my standards aren't exactly mind blowing. I'll be happy to post details when it arrives.
Bump
Also, interested in any recommendations.
530farm, cheers from across the bridge in the 650!
So my Shinecon VR headset came in yesterday. Had the opportunity to thoroughly try it out in short bursts of time. That means I haven't watched a movie on it.
Place of purchase: AliExpress (Amazon has it too but I purchased from AE because I knew my Nexus 6P was going to take a while to arrive anyways)
Price: $27 from AE (there's a range of prices)
Phone tested with headset: Nexus 6P
Comfort:
In comparison to the original Google Cardboard, it's obviously more luxurious and comfortable. The Shinecon has faux leather all around the areas that contact your face, except for the nose. The nose area is where a bit of light leaks in, but can easily be remedied with a bit of foam. However, I decided to leave this open as a port for ventilation because the phone can get warm depending on what type of VR content you're consuming.
The head straps are also made of good quality Velcro, so it's easily adjustable. The placement of the straps also seem pretty ideal, as the headset doesn't seem to be torquing my head downwards too much while in use.
Features:
The Shinecon has a few knobs to tweak the lens' position. There is a single knob on top that adjusts the distance between the lens. There's also knobs on either side of the headset that adjusts the fore/aft of the entire phone to bring the display into focus.
The phone loads into the headset with a spring/clamp mechanism. However, I found it difficult to load/unload my N6P mostly because the phone itself is pretty large for the mount. I wouldn't recommend any phone larger than the N6P for the Shinecon, but there's a tiny bit of wiggle room if you insist. The clamping mechanism also seems rather fragile, as the plastic bends pretty easily. The tabs for the clamp are also rather thin. If it does break, the clamp/tray can be removed with a few screws, and you could load the phone into the headset with some foam. Once the phone is loaded into the tray, all you do is fold the front "door" back into position and a magnet keeps things closed. The magnet seems sufficiently strong to hold my N6P without any problems. There is also an extra backplate that can be removed (attached via magnet) to allow better ventilation of your device, as well as exposing the camera for augmented reality, etc.
The front door also has a gap on either side of the headset, allowing for easy access to any ports on the phone that are on the top or bottom of the phone's edges. I could easily charge my N6P and use headphones while using the Shinecon.
Viewing Content:
Since this headset does not include any of its own software, I can only talk about the experience provided by 3rd party apps. I used Cardboard Theater to view my own content, and tested other VR videos with VRSE and Youtube. Everything was very simple to use, and the lens were of great quality. Picture was very clear, and the FOV was fantastic. Using Cardboard Theater, I was able to adjust "how far I am to the screen." In other words, it felt like I was on the front row of the theater with very good immersion. Not much black space on the edges of the field, which was a problem on the original Google Cardboard headset. I don't know if the advertised 110* FOV is accurate, but I'm pretty satisfied with what I'm seeing.
Build Quality:
Overall build quality was better than expected. Everything fit together very nicely. Nothing was squeaky. There were no loose threads on the leather. The hinges did not creak. The lenses weren't scratched or warped. I basically had no complaints. Especially given the very cheap price, I would definitely buy it again. This headset was slightly more pricey than a few other Chinese brand headsets, but the quality and FOV/immersion seemed to justify the slightly higher price tag.
TLDR:
I liked it. I would buy it again.
If you liked the review, a simple press of the "thanks" button will do! If you have questions, you can ask here or PM me. Keep in mind, I'm just a VR n00b, but this headset has served me well for the 2 days I've had it.

Best cardboard vr hmd for Samsung S7?? (not Samsung VR)

Simple question, i'm looking for the best cardboard vr for the Samsung S7, but not the Samsung VR.
I'm will use it with Rifcat/Trinus/etc...
why not Gear VR ("Samsung VR")? that is optimized direct to S7 és S7 edge, the general VR cardboards won't give you same quality
Thanks for answering!
The problem is Rifcat/Trinus... For the best experience (no-lag and better image quality) the recomended connection is usb tethering. Already confirmed both connection, wifi was very laggy, and usb worked beautifully.
Sadly, the Gear VR (sorry, my mistake with the name), don't allow any external usb connection.
And paying for the Gear VR, and not plugin it, is a waste.

And because i'm in argentina, there are just a few models... Vr Box 2.0 (and maybe the 1.0), RITECH Riem Virtual Reality 3D Glasses I & II, and some other carton cardboard solutions.... So most probably i'm kind of screw

I don't understand. I've got a GearVR and I love it! I've been using it in tandem with oculus stuff, and use it with riftcat! USB Tethering works just fine. One complaint that I would have pairing it with your PC is that the S7 is 1440p, which splits up into roughly (If my math is correct, and I never check my math ;P) 800p per eye. Which, no sugar coating it, looks like **** and the aliasing is out the ass. But hey, $100 rift, amirite?
"The GearVR has no USB out!"
Uhh... yeah sure. I don't know what model you all have, but mine has a USB out and the not as cool vertical head strap. Apparently there were two versions for the GearVR!? I guess so.
tl;dr: Get a GearVR "Revision 2" I guess its called. $100 is extremely cheap for a HMD of this comfort and quality, and the GearVR is definitely a luxury worth paying for. The Oculus store app exclusives and PC Ports, The PC connectivity, and the ability to freeze the GearVR services and play Cardboard native games make this headset really the only choice for mobile VR in my opinion.
What?!?!?!? All reviews so far, said that the usb port of the GearVR is only for charging....
Can you please give more info about your version? Here, in argentina, we don't have a variety of hdm... And the Gear VR costs about 2600 ARS... and the typical salary is about 10000 ARS... so, something that costs 1/4 of the common salary, is a lot...

Uhh... Wow, didn't know I'd be in the spotlight here...
(Currently bricked my S7, so I can't provide pics)
Yeah, basic black velcro straps, and the entire piece isn't that cosmetically 'attractive', but I mean, none of these headsets really are. Anyway, standard "GearVR" and "Powered by Oculus" black text on the side. On the underside are two vents and a USB micro port. Other side is ya know, volume up/down, dedicated back button, and touchpad. topside is the focus wheel. On the inside eyepiece is the lenses and the light detector to sense whether or not the headset is on, and inside the outwards face (Where your phone goes) is the feet that hold it, the usb micro plug thing built inside the foot that holds it, and the foot is adjustable for S6/7 and Note. It's a solid "Click" when you switch sizes and there is no possible way it's going to fail. then there's the panel that fits over the front.
Pros:
~Cheap for the quality (Especially name brand like Samsung and Oculus!)
~Wide selection of original games
~Some PC ports exist (Provided you own a BT Controller, you can even play Dreadhalls!)
~The usb port at the bottom is nice and low profile for PC streaming/Charging while playing
~The volume buttons are easy to get to and very helpful
~Not dedicated, (You still have to plug them into your phone) but easy to access and non-damaging 3.5mm headphone jack slot
~Really damn fine lenses used for the build
~Aside from the somewhat cheap plastic used, it is very well put together
~Personally think it's the best looking out of all the headsets out now
~Most games on the store run extremely well and keep their framerates ~60
~Not the most comfortable out of all three headsets out now, but for mobile, it doesn't give your nose papercuts ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) (SHOTS FIRED!!)
~Once you put your phone in, there is no way it's sliding out
Cons
~Let's talk about the front cover. Why would there be a cover without a hole for the camera when there's a passthrough camera mode in the subspace!?
~Not a lot, but some games REQUIRE a BT Controller. (In hindsight of writing this, the target audience for this product probably has more than one)
~Extremely underpowered hardware and low resolution leads to absolutely bad aliasing.
~Overheating is a serious problem on Snapdragon 820 variant
~Fogging. The lenses fog up way to easily. Keep a screen/eyeglass cloth nearby on humid days. (Or go lock yourself in the freezer. Whichever is closer.)
~The touchpad on occasion is somewhat hard to find the center with the headset on
~The touchpad really isn't that great unless you like Dinput controls on a "Touch"pad.
(I would complain about the inability to use the DS4 controller on the S7, but for some reason, it really doesn't work on the entire phone, and that's more of a Samsung problem)

If you are considering purchasing one of these headsets, and need a Bluetooth controller, Stay away from moga like the plague. I personally own one. Cheap plastic, cheap connectors, cheap buttons, and I payed $80 for it. It doesn't even connect every time and it might drop off the connection if you just look at it weird. Really don't get one. I've heard steelseries makes a pretty good android specific controller.

Can yout provide some model number/name/code details? Barcode? QRCode?
Don't take it wrong, the review/comment you gave, was informative... but i cant go to a shop a say "hi! i need to test your device, plugged to my notebook" or something like that. I need to ask for some serial number or something like that...

"Also compatible with Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge"

Here, i'm talking about using some mobile VR, plugged to a PC, and with some 3rd party software, be able to play some pc vr games (instability, incompatibility, and a lot sort of problems and issues, are expected).
If you want to search something about it, go and check Rifcat and Trinus...
