Almost all apps (including launcher) crash - OnePlus X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Just got my new OnePlusX and the first time I turned it on it prompted all the set up screens. I had to skip through them all because the keyboard would not stay open. It would open and then immediately minimize. Not a great start but no problem, I'll add my accounts and connect to wifi later.
Once I get into the 'home screen' I could see my status bar at the top but no icons and no way to access the app draw. I pressed the capacitive buttons and opened the notification slider which both worked and eventually got into the play store. From here I installed an app or two and got prompted to do a system update, which I did.
After the update I was hoping my launcher would work.. it didn't. The home screen is a black screen with the status bar at the top and no icons - the home button seems to do nothing when I'm in an app and press it.
I installed a third party launcher which worked - I now have a home screen and app draw. However, after opening an app, it crashes after a second or two (chompSMS does this as well as messenger, phone and contacts which are stock apps).
Does anyone have any information about this, what can I do here?
I know one option might be flashing a custom rom but being a brand new phone that should most definitely not be something I have to do to be able to call and message people..
Update: I ran a factory reset and all problems seemed to be resolved now. Not sure what was going on but I guess something happened that a reboot couldn't fix. I'll leave this post in case it helps others.

Have you done a factory reset after the system update??

CM11 Problems

I've just this minute flashed the latest CM11 zip file on my SIII through the CM update in the settings and I was surprised to see that it was relatively slower than other updates and there was also a lot of screen tearing and juttering when going from app to app and scrolling down the screen.
Anyway, the problem occurred when I tried going to back to an older version, it successfully installed the older version without a hitch but the problem is that the home screen UI crashes every time I press the home button. I can do everything else on my phone, I can pull down the notification pane and gain access to all the tiles there and if I get a facebook notification for example, I can load up facebook but as soon as I press the home button I get a message saying 'Unfortunately, Trebuchet has stopped.'
I know there are always problems when reverting back to a previous version but I was wondering if there would be an easy way to fix this without having to factory reset my phone.
EDIT - I just updated back to the latest version and the home screen UI is back but I don't really want to be on this version as it is laggy so if there's a way to use an older version without the home screen error then I'm all ears.
As you can see with the screenshot, I have the settings open which I opened through the tiles pane but trying to press the home button will result in that message popping up every time.

Just go back to a nightly where it didnt crash and you have a smooth UI. There is no problem with that. Dirty flashing works in both directions

That what I did do. I was using cm-11-20140131 then I updated to cm-11-20140202 which was laggy so I reverted back to cm-11-20140131 which was working before the update and this is where I encountered the home screen UI crash

Try another nightly. If you can open the settings, go to apps and look for the launcher. Clear its data and cache then

Same, with my GS4. Tried going back a few nightlies and back to the M release, but Trebuchet (or Launcher3) keep crashing even after wiping caches. I'm actually looking under Settings > Apps > All and don't see Launcher/Trebuchet anywhere...

Restart the phone

HELP: Disable Swipe Status Bar

Using: EnSec Enhanced Security + Operative w TWRP. WP8 Launcher
I checked the "Always show statusbar" option in Swipe Status Bar. It works, shows the status bar constantly, BUT... Now I can't launch any applications except for the ones that are linked in the main launcher screen. When I swipe right to the drawer, tapping any app has no effect. It seems like it's blocking applications from either detecting screen taps or opening at all.
Even in the few I can launch, like Settings, it doesn't detect when I tap any of the menu options. I can scroll up and down, and pull down the status bar, but I cant make the SSB control panel open again to disable the option.
I tried booting into safe mode, but it still launches SSB so the problem persists. I tried changing to Smart Launcher, same problem.
Is there any way to prevent Swipe Status Bar from starting up?

Same problem here, except I stayed in the SSB settings long enough to discover that unchecking that check box again is one of the things that having it checked prevents you from doing. Long story short, I think this has probably made the decision for me whether or not to switch from EnSec+Operative to Loki's new ROM...because I am not sure there's any way out of this without flashing.
I had the same issue,
Only thing I could do was open up play store and uninstall.
It took forever to figure it out and took many tries till it finally registered my clicking.
If all else fails, you may need to wipe the watch via recovery and start over.
I have since stopped using the app as I never want to go through that nightmare again.

How do I get Swipe Status Bar to work?
Launch Swipe Status Bar
Select the first two options
Done

Now your only options are to either factory reset in TWRP or flash back to stock and start over.

Bummer.
Not sure the quote was relevant.
Should have checked the app's page when I saw that feature though:

...Granted, it doesn't mention anything else not working, but that would probably have been enough to keep me from experimenting, even though it still wouldn't have led me to think that checking the box would make it impossible to uncheck the box...

Found another way!
...For those who are remotely comfortable with adb, anyhow.
adb shell 'pm clear cz.chladek.swipe_status_bar'
This is essentially a force-stop and clear app data on Swipe Status Bar. Only works if you already had usb debugging enabled or find a way to enable it, of course.
Thanks for the tip Kilroo, but it was too late for me. I went TWRP and wiped it. Yeah, it cost me a lot of customizations gone, but at least I didnt hand anything there that wasn't backed to the cloud.
One silver lining: Now I get to rebuild the launcher, icons, widgets etc in a bit more usable form. AND I'm staying away from that SWB setting until is out of beta! Thanks for the help, all!

I was afraid of that. Well, maybe if anyone else makes the same mistake it will help them.
I'm still trying to figure out whether I want to go from EnSec+Operative to the new Unified Rom doohickey or not, since I no longer have to redo everything regardless.

[Q] Blank screen after unlock screen

I have a Lenovo P780 dual sim since 1 month, bought on Amazon Germany, but shipped from China.
Have rooted it and added many other apps and deleted them when I didn't like them. I use the Apex Launcher. It has been perfect up until today. I wanted to move new app icons into the dock area underneath the normal home screens. I bought the Pro version of Apex Launcher because I thought the added functionality would allow me to do this. Whether or not this upgrade is the source of my present problems, I do not know.
The problem I now have is that once I unlock the screen, the normal home screen is now blank. If someone calls me the phone app lights up and I can pick-up and talk normally, later check my contacts, see the call and text logs. After the call, pushing the "Home" button briefly no longer works to bring back the home screen. Pushing the "Home" button for a couple of seconds brings up the running apps and lets me close it, then when returning to the "home" screen its blank.
Swiping down from the top allows me to seeing the settings buttons such as WiFi etc as it was before. I can click on the "Settings" icon to open the settings, but if I try to change the "theme" the app responds every time that it has stopped working.... Swiping back up returns the blank screen.
HELP please !!!

Sorry Stumpy, but I cannot use your advice. Since I cannot see my home screens, I cannot launch any apps. When I power on my phone I have no access to any apps. However if an email arrives, the GMail email app starts and I can then read and send emails. If I receive a telephone call, the native phone/contact/messages app starts and then I can also use these apps. But I cannot start or see any of the other installed apps, unless it has been prompted to start from outside my phone.
I have backed up all data and applications to my SD card using Titanium Backup before this problem started. I have reset the phone using the internal red button, used the settings menu to restore the data and apps, but nothing helps. I can change the Wallpaper using the Settings icon I can see when I swipe down from the top of the phone but when I try to change the Theme, the Settings app responds with "Unfortunately System UI has stopped". (This always happened since the phone was new - so I then downloaded Apex Launcher to go around this problem)

Hi Stumpy
I managed to get my phone back!
I used my desktop computer to send myself an email with a link to another launcher (Go Launcher). When the email arrived on my phone I could then click on the link which gave me the chance to open the link using Google Play and then install the new launcher. Once the new launcher was installed, I could see everything again, except that I then needed to put all the apps back in the right places. Wow am I happy !!
Thanks for your time and trying to help me!!

I am glad that you manage to resolve the problem. Be carefull next time when you spend money on apps. Try free versions first time and install custom recovery for your phone. They are the best thing for backup.

Android update 6.0.1 issues

For me, after the update there are several issues:
Home screen apps were removed.
I can't remove icons from home screen. Dragging works, but can't reach the trashcan on top of the screen... It works only when automatic screen rotation is on and the phone is used in "landscape". In other situations the top of the screen works fine, just can't remove icons from home screen.
Where's the option to arrange icons by Name? Is it been removed? Could'nt find it anywhere.
I refuse to believe that these are all my own problems

After the update?? The phone came with marshmallow already, you mean the incremental firmware? All the things you say are there. Try to re-flash the firmware. You don't need to wipe user data, Only if you want a clean installation.

Using a default launcher in pointless, when there are a lot good alternatives available, so select some and just use it.

Navigation bar there, but no buttons

I received the s9+ (at&t) the other day. It worked fine for an hour or two, then the buttons(home, recent, back) disappeared. I still have the navigation bar at the bottom.
I have tried changing all the settings in the navigation bar settings, but the buttons will still not show up. I can even change the colors of the bar, but no buttons.
I can use the home button even though it does not appear. In order to use recent or back, I must quickly press the home button and slide my finger left or right to push either button. This does not work reliably and usually just takes me home.
It is almost as if this is supposed to be an option, but I've found no way to turn it off. Why else would I be able to press and slide to use the buttons?
Contacted Samsung support and after an hour of troubleshooting, they suggested I take it 100 miles to a repair center. I feel this is a software issue that should be patched immediately and shouldn't have to drive my phone or wait to get a replacement phone that may have the same issue.
Any advice would be great!
New to the forums so I can't post an image
I assume you've rebooted the phone, but if not start with that. If that doesn't do it, you might try booting into recovery and clearing cache.
Samsung had me try both. Didn't fix it unfortunately.
I am having this exact same issue. I have attached some screenshots. I changed launchers but it's like that on all apps. It's real bad on some apps such as gmail and the play store because the navigation bar is black and takes up a lot larger space. I've tried everything in the navigation settings. I then went to settings-general management- reset- and reset settings. That didn't help. I was going to factory reset but I didn't want to fully set it up again unless I had to. What other options have you tried? I have the unlocked s9+ on verizon.

At this point we are at the mercy of someone to patch. I have read on other forums that it may be related to corporate software loaded on your phone for work. They have uninstalled and it worked.
I have software for work as well but haven't tried uninstalling to test their theory but, I hope someone gets it figured out.
The issue was Airwatch. https://forums.androidcentral.com/a...-my-new-s9-my-navigation-bar-disappeared.html
Airwatch it is then. Let me know if you get a fix, I'm going to be calling my support department as well as soon as I can.
