Hello there,
I mainly want this tablet only for two purposes, one is browsing and another is watching movies.
But i just came to know that this tablet has an aspect ration of 4:3 and watching movies in this tablet will cause the movies to end up with two black spaces on either side.
Will this take away the experience of watching a movie? Other than from Browsing(which i'v heard this tablet is very good) my main usage is at watching Youtube videos and Movies.
Can any of you be kind enough to tell me about these and if this tablet is still good enough to purchase?

I have this tablet. Its great. Had I known it would NEVER get updated to Android 5 or Android 6.. I would never have bought it. Dont be deceived by the updates it gets now. Those are just APP updates. Since it launched what about 2 years ago now its still on Android 4.4.4.
I would buy something else.. In the long run its worth it.
I have bought this tablet for my wife. Good thing was that i had few days for myself to test it. The big worry was that it will come all in China language and no Play store. As it turns out not to worry. There was English as default (even Polish was an option) and there was Google Play. All works superb. For this price its a bargain of the year. My wife use this tablet for imgur, google books and games so she is more then happy.
The only small problem... If you ever will want to do factory reset you need to have a google keyboard app ready. After FR there is no keyboard at all... so you cant connect to wifi and you have to have app on the sdcard.
Thats all from me.
For somebody who is not bother with the old software (kitkat) then this is a perfect tablet.

Hey, can you explain what you mean? As far i know, Miui 7 was released sometime now and its based on Lolipop. Its available for Mipad here-> http://en.miui.com/download-229.html
What he means is that MIUI 7 for MiPad is based on KitKat.

Pros:
1. Blistering performance
2. Nvidia CPU and GPU are doing best for a hand
held device.
3. Gaming is a whole new level
4. LG battery is a true power source for long time and
charge up quickly
6. Display is decend under direct sunlight.
Cons:
1. selecting Bluetooth from multiple windows closes
most of the time.
2. Brightness sometimes have its own idea about
changing to full blast ( don't say that auto
brightness is on or off ,I know well about how it
works)
3. Background app has limit ( even developer option
only gives choosing between number limits and
standard limit)
4. Background apps stops most of the times ( even
the second one in background stops occasionally)
5. Connecting to internet via Bluetooth devices has its
own mind about disconnecting all the times.
6. Camera didn't work always, its not stock camera
app, all apps for camera won't work occasionally
which inturn points culprit as nasty hardware
problem
7. All keys on bezel (back,home,multiple window) are
not good in response which is an inconvenience .
(you can use many soft key apps instead which
iam using now)
8. Mi Ui is not good(awful) which always take quiet a
time to load up if we prefer to go home directly.
9. Screen shot appear as a widget not a combination
keys which is inconvenient and annoying many
times
10. Entire system some times ( once in
thousand) slows in terms of performance.
11. Quiet a lot of heat builds up on gaming.

Ty for the post mate, i was thinking to buy the device but i was hoping that miui 7 is based on Lollipop (that apparently itsnot) and that the tablet could be a bit more solid. I will check for something else, take care
As far as device being stuck with KitKat -- are there any specific apps you wanted to run on the tablet and couldn't because they require the newer OS?
Without going the CM route, can the Google Launcher be installed on it?
Funny enough that my wife did want this tablet to be her candy crash saga device she couldnt install it from playstore. We had to download an older version and put the apk on the device and then i installed. Apart from that all the apps she is using on htc one (LP) she is using on MIPad

Global Stable Build only. AFAIK it will still be based on kitkat.
Have it since its release.
Its fantastic .
Great sound for movies and music.
Runs any game smoothly.
Browsing is effortlessly.
Nice is nice , not to big not to small.
Overall if you want a tablet that will just perform without hiccups then this is a good option.
eventhough this device has cm12.1 port but still its not for daily driver. xiaomi doesn't even release the sources.
I was really looking forward to buying this device keeping in mind the specs & pricing. Cant really decide if i should buy this Mipad or wait for the Mipad 2.
So far the the Mipad 2 only offers a mild upgrade in terms of processor (whose gaming performance I'm totally unsure of) & build quality. Infact the lack of expandable memory slot rather makes want to avoid waiting for the mipad 2.
Although Mipad is stuck on Kitkat, the fine Nvidia gpu makes sure it can run any game you throw at it with ease. The real question is with the lack of updates from xiaomi, how long will mipad continue to be a master amongst gaming tablets ?
Please suggest me if I should buy this device or if there is anything better in the market around this price range, considering this device is almost 2 years old now.
You know what, as the micro-USB charging port on my Teclast P70 started to malfunction less than a year of use in, I've grown more fond of the Type-C connector. While wherever MiPad 2 being an upgrade over MiPad in terms of the raw power is arguable, the Type-C connector and newer OS would sway me to by a MiPad 2.

Its a great device for media consumption , browsing , watching movies and playing games but not so good in terms of multitasking as MIUI is quite heavy and it has only 2GB ram but it does all other things smoothly without issues ! In this price range , atleast i think this is the best

Simply put, NO. Nobody really mentions the overheat, the persistent lag throughout the UI, etc. I purchased this and the Redmi Note 2 together new and both have been a disaster. The Mi 3W was like the best thing in the world until the sim adapter ruined the sim pins. The Mi 4 was great although it overheated as well in Performance Mode, but performance wouldn't really drop because of the heat. The Mi Note was the love of my life until my son caused me to accidentally drop it two weeks after buying it.
Mi Pad? Terrible. It's nothing like MIUI on any other device. Heck, even the nice MIUI port for the Nexus 7 2012 and 2013 give those two LIFE. But this thing has been a disaster. The UI isn't smooth, not even browsing or typing. The heat? I mean I'm typing this all on it on Balanced Mode, brightness a little over half, no other apps running, no vibration, no sound and average room temp and it's already at 37.2° Celsius (98.96° Fahrenheit). Gaming? I think you can cook an egg on the back. It will throttle. Even ran the 3D Mark "Ice storm Unlimited" benchmark while hot a few days ago and it told me that the device was not at its best and should probably have some background apps closed or given time to cool down. Sure, not everyone wants to game on it even though the GPU was designed for that, but again, typing this up is giving it a bit of a struggle to keep its cool.
It is a beautiful device, and no device is perfect, but I really wouldn't recommend it. Thankfully the heat has not caused my battery to drain at the moment it is occurring (I have seen this with other devices I've owned), but heat + battery = problematic battery in a closer than expected future.
I really don't want to shart on your hopes, but when I read about it, it was a must have for me. Sadly, it was not what I expected.
*If its at a good price and SEALED NEW, sure go for it. But otherwise, big no.

Thanks for your candid response. Any potential Mi Pad *2* buyers may also want to consider the fact that Intel has recently decided to drop the entire Atom division (Mi Pad 2 is powered by Intel Atom X5-Z8500), so I wouldn't hold my breath for *any* Android updates for existing Atom-based products.
Has mi pad improved its software?
Its June 2016, has mi pad updates able to solve the heating and other issues till now or this is still a no buy?
Alternatively, is the cm-11 build stable enough for mi pad?
Cm11 is quite stable.
I use Cm11 and it'sfine overall. I get the occasional unexpected app closure but it's not an issue.
I use it for browsing, ebooks and youtube mainly.

Some say yes, some say no. I found mine decent enough, and I used it pretty heavily.
I did this switch about a week ago, having had a negative experience introducing my Desire HD to a marble floor at high velocity...
Basically I love the phone - the facebook/twitter integration is fantastic.
Probably worth saying though that the battery life isn't fantastic. Just about on a par with my Desire HD, though I do find the indicator to be somewhat overly cautious - 50% charge remaining looks more like 30 on the little display (reached this at 4pm today) ...
I use social sites, push gmail, spotify streaming (1hr), 10 SMS and approx 1 hr calls plus other minor stuff and generally get about 16 hours before charging. I suspect if you use it more you will get less. not a problem for me as it sits on the charger at work, but may be more relevant if you can't do that ...
The only thing I miss from my Desire HD is the Internet Sharing functionality, which is there in WP7.5, just waiting on Nokia to update it ...
The size and display are beautiful - I carry an iPad 2 for things that benefit from a larger screen, but am currently finding myself using the phone more for emails etc.
I heard a lot of negativity around the door covering the USB port, but I quite like it ....
You might want to see what happens with the Lumia 900 as well - that may have a bigger battery and better battery life (or it may not).

As a Lumia 800 user, I find the switch to be very painful and counter-productive. Here are some of the issues that I have encountered:
Extremely poor battery life. I cannot stress this enough. On normal usage (non-smartphone activities), it is fine. But try using Nokia Maps for 15 minutes or so and you will see the battery drain very, very quickly. And Nokia Maps is not even close to what Google Maps can do in terms of features.
No multi-tasking. Imagine this: you are in the middle of an action game when you accidentally press the Search button. Boom! The search interface pops up. Your game? Gone.
STILL NO USB OR WIFI TETHERING/HOTSPOT!!! Aarrrggghhh!!! It's 2012, not 2002.
Over-zealous OS lockdown. No third party dialer (those on the market aren't real dialer replacements). No folders for apps. No USB mass storage (fortunately, you can enable this through a simple registry tweak).
Very expensive games (compared to iOS or Android) with generally lower quality graphics.
Having said all this, your requirements may be very different from mine. It does have a nice & responsive UI, very good social network integration, nice MS Office hub and a nice email application. Some people swear by Lumia 800.

I've just migrated from Android to WP7 on the Lumia and am much happier. Now I'm not messing about flashing ICS roms every week I trust my phone with my data.

You will definitely like the Lumia 800 if you're coming from a Desire HD (I owned and hated that phone XD) the newer models of the Lumia 800 hasn't had any problems with battery life. For whatsapp and browsing, it's fine. Gaming drains as usual. See if there's anyway to lend one. To see how battery works out for you.
Nice point of view, yes, I don't do game on small device,even on tab I found it hard. But no tethering? How about near future,since my laptop will share internet from phone. I just want a simple phone with social n web browse.Thanks all

Not all games/apps can handle that gracefully. Fusion:Sentient would simply restart the game while Wordament would reset the score (when "switched out" at certain point).

got my Luma on Saterday and i love it, i have came from an Desire, the differance is amazing, smooth and fast, will not be hicking this, hope there will be more apps comming out, had to wait a while before the android mrket got some decent apps.
the batteryis hard to judge got mine on all the tme, playing games or music downlaoding music frome zune (for free for 14 days woho)

the lumia is so seamless..so flawless..i had actually converted from the desire s to an lg optimu 7 but immediately realised i needed the lumia..got one from ebay and it really is amazing..try it..just try it..

Ahhh...ok, I have another solution, when you purchase your phone, download the app Skydrive, it's Microsoft's cloud connected to your Hotmail account, so you can upload your photos there and access them through your email account, that way you don't have to install anything and it's easier for you to upload pictures to that and load them on to your phone when you get home to your PC vice-versa.
Bought a lumia Hope its fullfil my needs...but look like it will...need to test batt life

- OS Fragmentation, I hate having to install custom roms every time because the official update never comes, and manufacturers usually leave 6 months old devices forgotten.
- Another thing, I've noticed that WP usually have "less powerful" hardware than Android, there is no big race for dual or quad cores... That tells me that the OS doesn't need that much power to run smoothly.
Said that, i have a few questions. What is the expected longevity for this phone? Is it expected to receive the next OS update? and finally, what are the main drawbacks you find for the OS and are they expected to be solved in future updates?

Microsoft and Nokia have been doing quite well as far as OS and firmware updates are concerned. Sure there are lots of country variants for the firmware and they may not be released at the same time, but the wait is nowhere near as long as what Android users typically have to endure.
Also, OS updates seem to be quite independent of firmware updates (correct me if I'm wrong). At least this is the case for Lumia 800. So that makes it a lot easier for Microsoft to push new OS updates to WP users directly.
As for the hardware, you are correct. WP (up until now) does not really require multi-core CPU in order to run smoothly. Lumia 800 is packed with a single-core 1.4GHz processor, so it is quite a powerful phone. My only gripe is the under-powered GPU for gaming. 3D games look less appealing compared to their Android or iOS counterparts.
As for the drawbacks, I have already listed quite a few in the previous page.
For me I think I was happier with android, but the installation of new roms was a great pleasure for me, not a drawback.
The OS runs smooth as anything on its 1.4ghz core and I never use my phone for 3d gaming so I really have no need for a faster proc.
The biggest drawback for me are the following.
-Some of the 'simplification' of the OS is mid-boggling. If you turn down the volume because its late at night, or your music is too loud expect EVERYTHING on your phone to have a lower volume, the ringtone, the alarm, the games, the notifications etc. I have been late for work 3 times now because I had dropped the volume of my alert tones late at night and I subsequently had no alarm.
-The apps are lacking but expanding all the time, sometimes I get a bit frustrated by the 'no results' when searching for a slightly more obscure app feature. Android just has everything.
-The navigation is a long way off being as good as google navigation but is decent all the same, but NO WAY POINTS (stupidity!). That being said I still think google navigation is still a way off the market leaders like tomtom.
Basically for a day to day phone and for its core features, it is excellent. But dont expect to be able to customise anything other than your home tiles (sometimes). If an OS 'feature' could be considered to confuse a simpleton then you can bet your arse it wont be there.

When I played NFS Underground an accidently pressed the Search button, when going back to the game it didn't continue. It started all over. So no not a load of rubbish. Only native apps has continue on "multi-task"
It's not only native apps, third party ones can do it, as long as they're coded for it.
Just got mine, but initial impressions aren't all that positive. The N10 is my 6/7?th tablet, so I think I have some reasonable comparisons (original iPad, Xoom, Acer, Asus TF101,102, Prime, Infinity).
I really dislike the layout of the N10 Android home/back buttons. I use my tablets almost exclusively in landscape mode, so having to reach to to middle of the screen to find home or back buttons BLOWS. I have large hands but I hate having to move my hand rather than reaching with my thumbs - seems so unnecessary. I also dislike Chrome as the defacto browser because it doesn't have Flash and the usual Android stock browser (which is very good overall) isn't loaded - so forced to use other browsers (with their own quirks) that do support Flash. Frankly, until every site on the net is available in HTML5, every device needs Flash support.
While the screen is nice, it's not something I noticed was mind blowingingly better than than the Asus Infinity (nor the Prime for that matter). I use my tablet all day long for reading and I don't find the resolution improvement offers much improvement.
The really nice thing about the N10 is the speaker locations. Makes a meaningful improvement over rear facing speakers on the Prime/Infinity. That said, volume is still too low - have to get an aftermarket app (like SpeakerBoost) to get volume up to decent levels for noisy environments.
Battery life seems good - better than the Asus Infinity/Prime, but obviously no dock to goose battery life a lot more. USB charger is slow on the N10. Asus wins that contest hands down.
Build quality seems good, but Asus Infinity is so much nicer (and thinner and lighter).
N10 offers smooth scrolling so the processor works nicely. Chrome works buttery smooth, but alas, lack of Flash is ridiculous as so many sites I visit still use Flash.
I'll keep for a few more days to see if it grows on me, but I think it's going back for a refund...
That said, if the N10 is your first high end tablet, you'll like it...
Wait a second, so you prefer the build and materials over smoothness and performance? What kind of cracked out world are we living in?
The browser is replaceable and flash is easily implemented so the only thing that you mention is feel and build. Maybe flesh out a little better of why you prefer the infinity or you will end up looking like that pierrekid moron.

The same world where somebody could mistake a Nexus 7 as an iPad Mini, before the iPad Mini was even released
The N10 is not using Tablet UI which explains why the navigation buttons are in the bottom-center. Tablet UI since 4.2 is deprecated in Google's eyes.
The N10 is also the "Google" experience, which is why Chrome is included by default. Flash player on Jellybean is not supported, and there's nothing you nor anyone else can do to warrant any kind of support from Google or Adobe regarding such matters. With this said though, there are various methods for getting Flash Player working on Jellybean. On devices that use an older OS (ICS for example), I guess Flash Player works just fine. Also... I run into very few sites that "require" flash player.
And... since this is a Nexus device, you can easily tailor the device to your needs. Your not forced with a lockdown bootloader, unlocking the bootloader doesn't void warranty, and the Nexus 10 is the best device supported on AOSP currently, which means customizing the Android experience should be... relatively easy for anyone (with experience). That button-location thing I mentioned, can be fixed with some modifications.
I haven't owned a Infinity, so I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure the Nexus 10 is more "open".
I would take chrome over transformers laggy browsers. They have terrible stock browsers. (Yes, download another one.) Tf201 was a TERRIBLE tablet! Battery was good but gps didnt work, bluetooth and wifi couldnt be used at the same time, wifi had terrible signal. Looked nice but that's about it. Nexus wins this.

Nothing mentioned in the OP should be an issue for anyone who has owned a Nexus device or has minimal knowledge on how to root and use custom roms/kernels.

bee answered your question. It's a very easy thing to accomplish. You can achieve your desired preference in future ROMs and in present ROMs available for the N10.

Are you being serious? If there's anything to gripe about it's the apps that have not been updated to provide the optimal performance for the N10, you'll have to be patient for the community to catch up to the specifications of the N10. They're beyond amazing when they have proper support compared to older tablets. The image quality is definitely noticeable in this case.

Yes the speaker locations are paramount. They should have always been the standard - which they will be now.
When playing movies using MX Player or playing music through Google Music, I have to turn the volume down as it gets too loud so I disagree with the volume being too low.
You honestly have to have hard of hearing to believe that. Why would anyone in a noisy enviroment not use headphones? The device comes with a headphone jack which would make sense to utilize in such enviroments.
For example:
Listening to music on a portable device such as the N10 when you're in a room with other people playing games (causing lots of noise) and then complaining about the volume being too low is being ignorant. Use your headphones.

You're comparing something to nothing. The pogo charger/dock hasn't been released for the N10 yet so resorting to comparing it to the stock charger, which only takes 5½ hours for me to charge from 0% is excellent for a 9000mah battery, is moot and completely nullifies your comparison. You should wait until Samsung/Google releases the pogo charger and/or keyboard dock.

Build quality is superb for the Nexus 10. It really doesn't matter as it's all subjective and differs from individual to individual.

The only thing that the Infinity would have over the N10 is the microSD expansion slot and maybe the camera, but who takes photos with tablets for art? Congrats.

An abysmal 224ppi - tablets for that cost should have better ppi for a better picture quality.
Only supports MP3
so on so forth.
Someone who doesn't appreciate the price per power ratio of the N10 doesn't deserve to own one.

Im sorry but you must be high or something. I came from the A500, GTab 10.1, Prime, Infinity then Note 10.1. The only tablet that I would consider going back to which I dont because the N10 is a beast, is the Note 10.1.
The Infinity has lots of problems and we all know what they are. I gladly sacrificed the keyboard dock for the N10 which wil be on craigslist shortly.
If you dont realize what you got there then its best that you do return your N10 and head back to the Infinity/Prime forum.
Oh and the screen... its definitely better then the Infinity in everyway.

The Infinity is 0.5mm thinner and 5g lighter. I can't imagine how a human would actually notice that difference.

Let me tell you a little secret ... I ordered the N10 about an hr after it went up for sale ... cancelled the order 20 mins later ... just could not think of why it would be so much better compared to the ... drum roll ... the TF101 I have ( I have 2 in the household ).
I am still hoping and praying that Sammy will release what was known as P10 , after the contractually obligated "do not compete" clause expires.
Dock, stylus, expansion slots ... CES may be ? Something that is free of Google's idiotic restrictions ...

You said USB charging on the Infinity was better. I had the Infinity for a while before I got my N10, and I could never actually get it to charge via USB. I'm still curious as how to actually get it to work.
I am wondering how you can even compare things that are clearly OS version and app dependent ??

4.2 does not support flash end of story, you have to sideload or use something non-stock, it if you want flash to work.
So when you get 4.2.1 STOCK AOSP on the Infinity then you could actually make a fair comparison.

It makes sense to compare a tablet you own to the N10, but to go as far as saying there's another tablet that's factually better than the Nexus 10 with the points the OP claimed are anything but him having buyers remorse and trolling.
The reason I'm not going from the Galaxy Nexus to the Nexus 4 is because it's not a large enough gap in technology to warrant buying a new phone. The OP bought the N10 expecting it to project holograms and provide time travel and was disappointed it didn't so says that an inferior device is better than said device. It makes no sense. If it's not the upgrade you expected, don't blast the device. It's better than any of the tablets he mentioned albeit not a substantial upgrade.
I'm not going around the Nexus 4 forums saying the Galaxy Nexus is better because the upgrades are minimal compared to what I already own.
It's just irrelevant and ignorant to say such things with little to no context other than self-absorbed remorse.

I myself have owned both a prime and an infinity, and back when I owned them, prayed daily that Google would release a 10inch tablet to the market. When they announced it, I knew I would give away my ASUS counterparts in a heartbeat no matter what. The prime/infinity had such lagginess, even with custom roms, you could tell the I/O suffered immensely
I couldn't be happier with my N10. It's a f*ck*in monster, and the screen res blows away the infinity. Put em up side by side...you can tell a difference.
I would never go back to ASUS again. I can't even believe this is a discussion. There were so many unhappy asus owners, and hell...there still are this very day!

3-Dead trigger was crashing on my device all the time,called Madfinger and they know what to the me.

The only good thing about the TF700 is the aluminum body.

I agree with the OP, the nexus 10 is my 3rd tablet(the other 2 are the trasformer tf300 and the Infinity). Both tf300 and the Infinity play somewhat fine with Blu ray movies in MKV format. Hoping for better smoothness and performance in videos with the Nexus 10, i was disappointing to find out the Infinity did better than the Nexus 10 in video playback(using mxplayer pro)

Media playback will improve once media players are updated to support the N10's GPU. I've had to use software rending 5 out of 10 times with the videos I've watched.
The idea of this thread is ridiculous to me. This tablet has been exactly what I hoped it to be. I can actually still use my tablet while updating apps. I can open more than one webpage without immense stuttering (even complex ones), and I can switch between them without waiting an unbearably long time (thank you, 2GB of ram). I can switch between apps with very minimal delay (that is nicely covered up by a system animation). In short - I can use my tablet without it getting in the way.
I guess I can add to that the fact that the build quality on mine seems stellar, and light bleed is virtually non-existent. I love the material on the back. And I haven't had any issues with resets.
This is the tablet that I can just use without getting frustrated. I may eventually want to install a custom rom and theme it (something I have done to every device I have owned in the last 6 years). Heck, this seems like a perfect candidate for one of the "prettier" themes. But right now, I'm just enjoying using it.
Most things you mentioned can be fixed. Use boat browser and install flash on it manually, its really fast and flash works with no problems.
I don't like the stock Nav bar too and use Lmt instead, gives me the full 10 inch real estate and is convenient to use.
This tablet is awesome and I have used tons of tablet in the past, Plus its a nexus device and there is already tons of development in the forums in addition to the up to date android os

Really looking for a good decently large android tablet. I like vanilla android a lot and specs seem really good for the Nexus 9. Looking at the reviews though it doesn't look so great (bad volume and power buttons, light leaks in the screen, lagging applications, etc.). For those of you that own it what do you think, would you recommend it?
I love my Nexus 9 and would strongly recommend it. I've had zero issues with it.

I love it too! Just got it yesterday and have zero issues. Love how fast it is. Total bliss.
primary question, what will you primarily use it for, media, web, reading, gaming (high end or low end) .
I personally use mine as a jack of all trades with very little gaming. ( my wife on the other hand would need the nvidia shield for her gaming obsession )

I've had almost every tablet out there. I have a habit of buying them as they are released and I have to say that this one is my favorite. The combo of lollipop and the tablet makes it feel like it's completely unique. Fast as hell, beautiful and it feels good as an ereader / comic reader without being too big.

For ME, I don't want to be aggravated or pissed when using a tablet, which is exactly what the nexus 9 does. I've owned about every nexus device ever made, and this one is the worst (and best) user experience all in one. Mainly-
1) screen flicker. Every day. Always comes back after a reboot.
2) lag. I've had single core devices lag less than this thing. Literally. I know why its its lagging, and right now its unfixable.
3) after using a nexus 6 today, I am absolutely 100% convinced the n9 should have had 3 gigs of ram. This is the worst as this is something that wont be fixed until the NEXT nexus tablet comes out. The nexus 6 in a 24 hour period didn't hit low or critical ram states at all. Not one second. The 9 lives in these states. I had 5 chrome tabs open on the n6, while switching back and forth between all kinds of **** including games, and a page NEVER refreshed. It was wonderful, and made me realize the main thing I use the n9 for completely SUCKS compared to a phone. If anything, a tablet should be better at these things, not worse.

I do recommend it but wait another month so you'd have a better chance of getting the newer revision which seem to have less issues with the buttons and lightbleed.

I don't get lag on everything. That's not what I'm saying, and which is why I also say its the best and worst experience on a tablet.
I don't really multitask a lot, no more than average I'd say. I literally use this tablet for a few things, web browsing, youtube, very light gaming. My multitasking involves switching between youtube and chrome, and rarely a light game.
What I am saying though is it does lag MORE than most devices I have. After a fresh reboot, even in safe mode so there is 0 third party apps running after a while this tablet gets hit with serious bouts of massive lag and stutter. I've always heard about android lag, blah blah, and always basically thought people were full of **** or being too picky because really I've never had a device that lagged or whatever. Ya an occasional hiccup with previous devices, but rarely and never too bad. Not with the 9. Its consistent after a few hours use..
Maybe since you are actively developing, you're rebooting often. When I was compiling kernels and aosp builds, I flashed multiple times a day, which I'm assuming you may be as well as fast as you're kernel is being updated. Chances are if you don't have these bouts of lag, that's why. Like you said you can't believe my device lags a lot, I can't believe the opposite. If after a few hours my tablet is starting to lag while in safe mode, I find it VERY hard to believe most people aren't seeing ANY lag. Maybe what I'm considering lag you aren't. I'm calling lag ui choppiness/stutters/unresponsive for multiple seconds after pressing something.
I know lag is not hardware- Denver seems to be beastly. Software?- parts maybe, but lollipop does not have these 'lag' periods on my nexus 4, nexus 5, or either of my two nexus 7 2013's. I personally don't think its a coincidence that my nexus 9 is the only one that spends its time in low and critical memory, and its the only one to lag. Add to that it ONLY seems to lag bad while in these states. With all this said, what else is causing lag? Especially when it happens in safe mode- so third party apps are out of the question they are not the main cause. Something causes this lag, maybe its not lack of ram, but it sure seems that way so far- if memory leaks were fixed , maybe this will become a non issue. System ui and android system shouldn't be consuming 300mb a piece, which is what they will swell to after a few days.
On top of this, there is a reason google is using zram on this device and no other nexus, and its not because they're are testing it out or whatever else I've heard. They knew 2 gigs probably wasn't quite enough. Why else would they do this?

I hope so. I do like everything about it, besides said issues. Form factor, performance is good and smooth as butter a lot of the time, but when its bad its really bad IMO. It seems like there are big memory leaks with lollipop in general, and they seem to be worse on the nexus 9. Hopefully if they are fixed it will help with my(and other people's) issues.

If you must have a pure android experience. Then it's a no Brainer. This is the tablet for you. And it's future proof.. meaning that the 64 bit processor is going to kick the **** out of the competition (once app developers take advantage of it ).
The galaxy tab series is also really good. But unfortunately. it has touchwiz. but that can be corrected with a custom ROM.
So far I'm pleased with my nexus 9.

I'm thinking of getting the Nexus 9 as well. Plus, it's going to be my first tablet ever. Because of the prices I can only afford the 16GB model (white). Do you think this will be enough space? I know after the first use of the tablet there are only ~ 9GB left, but I think of only using it for creating and editing documents, watching movies (not that much), surfing, ... just basic stuff.
To "upgrade" the storage I read that the Nexus 9 is supporting USB OTG so in case I run out of space, I can simply plug in a stick for additional space, can't I?
Is there anything I have to look for before purchasing? I'll try out the tablet in a local electronic store, I'm aware of light bleeding and the problems of the back of the tablet. But is there anything more?
It would be nice if you can tell me something about your experiences!

That sounds great so far!
I read that there are 11,5GB free but only ~ 9GB "for use". Can you confirm that? But anyways, I'm not going to use it for huge amounts of music and pictures so I guess (and hope, haha ) that it'll be enough space available.
A lot of complaints of lag and freezing seem to be due to not enough random access memory. Shame that a nicely built tablet with great specs (Qi charging, 64-bit processor, vanilla Android) would be useless to many because of this issue.
I got one for $133 new from the Dell outlet with a sweet case for $15 both in red and gave it to Mom for Christmas, knowing that for her use it would be acceptable.
Here's what I found and how I've gotten the tablet to work great and have none of the issues.
1. Stick with the stock KK launcher. Forget Google Now or Nova as these use up too much memory.
2. The stock browser seems to work the best. Dolphin, Boat and others have been reported to be problem free too. Chrome is a no go.
3. Under Developer options shut off the animations as well as limit the background processes.
4. Disable anything you'll never use, and only install the apps needed.
5. Under "Google" account and "search" make sure Google Now is off.
These things may be self evident to some, but you will notice a night and day difference in the way this particular tablet operates if you stick to those things. At $130 it can't be beat.
Apologies for responding to my own post, just wanted to update, apparently Dell pushed out a OTA update recently that updated the kernel and the thing is much improved if not downright zippy now. Thanks for the tips. Despite the horrible reviews, I just ordered one from Amazon Warehouse for $75 Very Good condition. At that price, it is worth taking the plunge.
Use the stock browser keep off any RAM hogging apps and you'll like it. For $168 total I got a red one , the official red case and the dell wireless charger. Can't beat that price. It particularly excels as a movie watching device for travel. Good size and format, great battery life and storage with an optional SD card, and a 1080p screen. Seems to handle video playback really well too, stutter free.

We're taking it on the plane for movies in 3 weeks, so that'll be perfect. Have you tried rooting and Greenify app? That could further help keep the background processes in check. I have a 1st gen; wife will get the 2nd gen, but if I like it enough, I might get another one for myself.
No I haven't mainly because of the amount of bricks being reported. Too much headache and since its my mothers there's no point. Lol. You'll love it for watching movies I swear they look better than on my Nexus 9. Maybe that Intel video enhancer or whatever its got really works well. The speakers are loud and sound great too.

So I've had the tablet for a week now. The amount of bloatware pre-installed was insane. I was surprised since the 1st gen 3830 came with almost zero. After disabling all bloatware and all google apps, disabling animations, disable sync, disable backup & restore, it's running fairly well. Chrome browser is definitely not happening. Stock browser is good, but opening multiple tabs is still guaranteed to make the tablet lag.
All in all, this is a great tablet for someone who only does one thing at a time (No multiple browser tabs and switching back and forth between apps). 1920 x 1200 Screen is awesome, build quality fantastic, thin and fairly light, 802.11ac wireless, wireless charging, almost pure Android, and good enough battery life. This thing is perfect for my wife and was a steal at $75 from Amazon Warehouse. Got a $7 case from eBay and my wife is loving it. It's a big upgrade from her Nexus 7 2012.
That being said, I will not be picking another one up for myself unless we get a magic update that makes it as fast as my 3830. I like to multitask, so that's priority for me.
P.S. After all updates, I ran Antutu and the tab scored 33,000 vs 24,000 for my 3830. Sadly, real world experience doesn't reflect this.

Lol, my mother went from my hand me down N7(2012) to this and so far, with the way I've set it up, she likes it for her style of use. It really is a shame as if the darn thing had 3 (gasp!) gigs of Ram it would be a killer little tablet, the fact that you can pick them up so cheap is another huge plus.
Hi! CJ, I have a Dell Venue 8 3840, and for some reason I'm unaware of, it's WIFI, & BLUETOOTH, have completely being "lost", I.E. the icons, the Settings options etc.... Have " disappeared ".
I would be most grateful for your advice on it's recovery.

Hmmm, never heard of that happening before. I could ask you a bunch of questions to see what may have caused it but instead my advice would be do a reset. Under settings/back up & reset/ factory reset. Back up whatever files you don't want to lose, the cloud works great for that, and then reset. See if that brings it back.
Venue 8 touch screen freezing issue
I had bought my tablet online. It was working well initially. Then suddenly from one day the screen started to freeze once it was not in use for minimum 7-8 seconds although the tab was not hanging, just the tablet touch screen was not responding to touch.
my dell venue 8 3840 has kitkat 4.4.4. WiFi Bluetooth is not working at all. when i press on in the WiFi option, it goes to on but color doesn't change, i mean it keeps grey and it doesn't scan any WiFi signals. nothing happens on the screen. its like frozen. add device and reset options on WiFi menu are also freeze. when i come out of WiFi menu, it automatically turns off. i have already reset my tab 2 3 times to check if the issue resolves but the prob persists. advanced options are working. when i go there, it says mac address and IP address unavailable. and these options are also freeze. am not getting a clue of what has happened and how to get it fixed. plz help.
Dell Venue 8 8340 slow fix

I have found a solution for the extremely slow performance of the Dell Venue 8 8340. You must disable wi-fi optimization in settings --> wifi --> advanced. After disabling this feature, the tablet runs fairly smooth with no crashing or delays. This may be a temporary fix; however, it does seem to affect the tablets performance. Also, I did not have the time to check if this fix has been posted, sorry for the repeat if it has. Please update on whether or not this tweak works for others.
Setting 'Developer Options' -> 'Background Processes' to 'At most 2 Processes' seems to help with performance. Reboots and updates sometimes reset this to the default though.

This is a new 2048x1536 clone from Best Buy. It has Rockchip RK3288 processor with a Broadcom BCM4350 WiFi AC/BT4.0/FM radio. It came with Android 5.0.1. As usual from the Chinese, the SW leaves much to be desired. In fact the Regulatory Information page is for the N9. It went the FCC as MID7802 and pictures and user manual are post there. I grabbed one for $150. I was interested since it supports HEVC/H.265. It plays them flawlessly. It scored 785 on AnTuTu video test v3.0. The speed test was 38005. Screen looks good. Now for the bad.
1. Won't turn on when off and charger connected.
2. Adaptive brightness doesn't use the control. Really bright and drains battery.
3. SDcard only accessible for stock apps. ES3 or Kodi can't see it. Probably mounted root only.
4. Camera app is really primitive. No option to record as HEVC even though HW encoding supported.
Any thoughts on this tablet and how easy or hard it would be to get a good ROM on it?
Hmm, the bad looks like stuff that could be fixed with a software update. Though I've yet to see an adaptive brightness option that was any good. I almost always adjust manually. I never really use camera functions on my tablets. The part where it won't turn on while charging is a bit disturbing though.
Battery drains while screen sleeps like crazy

I managed to pick the flex elite 7.85" tablet up @ my local Best Buy yesterday for a discounted price of only $90 and so far very happy with it for the cost. Not sure I would be so happy at the full $150...maybe so though.
Battery life isn't the greatest even with a good battery saving app. Doesn't bother me to much though because I usually have my tabs plugged into the wall outlet.
Some things I like are the beautiful display and greatly bright lighting, makes it easy to use outside or in. Also like the quick responsiveness and sensitive touch screen. It's not so sensitive that you're accidentally hitting things you don't want to but plenty sensitive to pick up on the intentional hits. I like the thin style (only 0.3" thin, I think). Although it's plastic it feels solid and higher end in the hands. All in all it's just a decent tab for the average user...although maybe not so much for the enthusiast.
A couple things I don't like are that there are no accessories available for it at all. I'm rough on electronics (drop alot) and a good, solid case is near necessity for me. Still ticked off about dropping my Sero 7 PRO and killing it last year...man, was that ever a nice tab?!
Another thing I am a bit disenchanted with is no root instruction yet available and no ROM that I know of...been searching and hoping. I also read somewhere that it's not possible to write to the micro SD card from the tablet...if true, that really sucks! Though I rarely use a micro SD card with tabs, it's nice to be able to use them to keep onboard space freed up. I still need to buy a micro SD to test this last statement for myself, so can't guarantee the accuracy of the statement.
Anyway, decent tab that will probably fulfill my web browsing, shopping and WordPress needs for the next year so can't complain for a $90 investment. I don't expect any updates to the firmware over it's lifetime and really not to hopeful for a root instructional to be written but still pretty decent out of the box so far....I'll let you know about the possible microsd issue once I find out for myself.
OK, so I found out that the microsd card is difficult to get mounted and working correctly on this tablet (unfortunately I'm no geek). But I was finally able to use an app to xfer files after formatting the SD card to ntsf instead of fat32. Still a pita but got it working.
Now if only someone would make an easy root instructional for this thing I might actually keep it for a while
Alrighty, got one of these and so far it's been good for its price.
I can turn it off and on while charging, both sleep/wake and full power off/power on.
The brightness seems fine to me, but again I've not used adaptive as I've never had a tab with a worthwhile adaptive brightness, and I've had Nexus 7 and 9, Galaxy Tabs pro and S, and a half dozen others.
Getting an SD later today for it.
Battery life isn't great, but I'm not seeing the sleep drain I keep reading about.
As has been mentioned the SD is only visible to system apps. Unless you format it NTFS, then it can be found by other apps. Need to figure out how to make shortcuts/symbolic links so it can be reached from areas other than /mnt as I think some apps expect it to show up in the storage folder and other places.
It's fast and snappy. Display is crisp & nice and bright and is the perfect size. I too am seeing unexpected battery drain overnight (losing 50% of battery) while the tablet is sleeping. I wish the battery lasted longer on standby as my needs are to read to fall asleep and then wake up and study - the Tab A has a longer lasting battery than this. Takes a long time to boot up if it's entirely shut down. It refuses to run Netflix either in the Netflix app nor in the browser. I have all the latest updates of the OS plus Netflix but it's not working. It's a shame but I am today returning it to BestBuy due to the Netflix issue which I consider a core app. WINS: Display is awesome and CPU speed is very good! CONS: Won't play Netflix, battery life is weak, takes long to boot up.

i just bought this tablet used
i think my rom is hosed, it has a system process kill at startup and it is very laggy. it also shuts down is left to sleep for more then 5min. a factory reset doesnt change anything... but ive seen this before... nothing short of a full rom wipe fixes it. that's the real danger of chinese tablets, if you hose the os there is no way to fix it...
im trying to root it and put oma rom on it, to see if that fixes the software issues. i dont think its hardware, because once im in a game or app it runs lightning quick. even games like mortal kombat with their high end graphics run smooth... its really somethin on this screen.

It still has a long boot time, but if you go to the developer options, and turn off the animation options, it feels pretty fast (definitely faster than anything that is even close to this price range). Oma's current rom doesn't fix the Netflix app issue. Maybe an update can figure out what the conflict is?

I just got one yesterday. I didn't update to the December update, but I flashed oma's rom (pretty sure I did?), rooted with king root and then replaced with super su and the boot up time is much much faster than stock. I want to say less than a minute vs. close to 3 or 4 before.
I bought two of these used off eBay, both seem to suffer from sound stutter/slight freeze ups once in awhile. I've reset both and made sure they are running the current OTA update.
It seems to mostly do it for Youtube and YouTube for Kids, but notice it once in awhile during some more graphic intense games. Which surprises me as from the specs at least this should be a pretty decent budget tablet.
I just picked up a "seller refurbished" on from Ebay -- there are a *ton* of them up there at the moment. It actually looks pretty decent. The battery life is *horrible* (about 4 hours of SOT for reading or web surfing), but the rest of the flaws can be worked around.
First off was setting the window animations to zero, as suggested here earlier, followed by KingRoot and SU substitution (also as suggested). Then, from the Store:
- SDFix:KitKat Writable MicroSD and
- Folder Mount
combined to let me store app data on the microSD.
- FlashFire did a great job of installing Xposed Framework and from there I can tweak to my hearts' content (Greenify, GravityBox, and XSSID Indicator so far)!
Right now, it looks like your best bet would be Oma's rom that someone mentioned earlier, which would be rooted and let you do some customization. I don't use KingRoot because there's some report that the software collects data on you without your consent. What with all the rumors about Xiaomi snooping on you and China's officially-sanctioned practices in cyber space, you don't want to assume unnecessary risks. Bad enough that Uncle Sam is looking over your shoulder, but China?? Do the math!
Back to the matter at hand. Looks like your tab will be stuck with Lollipop forever (1) because the sales of this model is low enough not to stimulate any interest in developing custom roms; (2) manufacturer's support is non-existent (I mean literally non-existent); (3) if you get a representative to answer, the person doesn't know enough to say anything beyond what's in the manual; and (4) they categorically refuse to release even a stock rom for the user to restore where the tab is bricked by their own OTA updates!!! What sets them apart is that I know of no other reputable manufacturer that would so adamantly oppose such potential remedies. Unbelievable! The only recourse is warranty - which means if you're outside that period, you're toast, even if the hardware is in perfectly working order.
To recap, absolutely no support and no update. Promulgating a policy that drives away consumers is of course their prerogative, but why they care so much about losing business is beyond me. So think hard before shelling out for their products. Low prices and enticing specs ain't worth crap if the tablet doesn't work at all.
