[Hardware] Can't charge my S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
I can't get my phone to charge.
The power from the USB alone is good enough to display the battery icon, so the display works, the processor, the RAM, etc... (see attached animated gif).
So I believe it is not a USB connector issue.
But I never get the level up and the phone won't boot.
I checked the battery level with a voltmeter and get 3.4V which is not full charge but should be enough to boot (I guess ?).
The power from the battery somehow does not seem to get routed to the "appropriate place".
I believe this could be related to a battery connector issue, or a motherboard issue (connection to the power management chip), or the power management IC itself. What you guys think ?
Edit 1: After some time I unplugged the phone from the charger and tried to boot again. This time I got a boot loop on the "Samsung Galaxy S3" name (white letters on dark background - see animated gif) : another sign of life ! I then tried to enter download mode in the hope I could flash the phone with Odin... But I can only get to the warning message telling me to press vol Up to confirm Download mode. Unfortunately pressing VolUp reboots the phone (see animated gif)
Edit 2: After some time I checked the battery level again and it increased to 3.6V ! So the charge seems to work... So does the battery connector.
I am now thinking this could be as simple as a weak battery : the voltage is not all (I measure it with a multimeter : no charge, no current drawn), the battery needs to be able to provide the current the phone needs for booting. This would exlplain the boot loop. Even I guess the fact that the battery level drawing does not get its animation : this requires - some - CPU power/current.
Edit 3: Ii also tried a jig USB dongle to boot into download mode. I succeed entering download mode, but phone turns off again after 2 seconds. I don't have another S3 battery for now. Does anyone know what the 4 battery pins are made for ? Two pins are obvious as they are marked + and -. What about the 2 others ? Am I supposed to be able to boot the phone with a voltage generator connected to + and - pins of the phone, leaving the 2 other pins floating ?
Edit 4: bad news... I could connect my S4 battery to it. I know this battery is good as it powers my S4 with no problem : it surely has enough current capability for an S3... Unfortunately the S3 keeps looping ;-(
Edit 5: I found that this is related to the power button : even though it does not mechanically stay on (pushed), it stays electrically as if I was keeping it pressed. This explains the boot loop perfectly. I took the motherboard off and tried to "clean" the push button component (see attached image), reconnected everything, put all back in and ... bingo ! it works... BUT it is weak : it did restart its boot loop after a few calls for the new year... However I could restart it again quite easily this time. I plan to use the phone for some time and I'll decide wether I need to replace the push button on the motherboard.

Viewpad 7 wont boot, power button flashing red

Hello!
I purchased this device some time ago and did not modify it in anyway (no rooting/flashing etc), just a stock device. After leaving it just laying around for about a month I tried to turn it on again and nothing happened. Connecting it to USB or wall charger just makes the power button red led blink intermediately.
Ive tried:
Reset button
Hard reset (vol up+vol down+power button)
Leaving it to charge overnight from the wall charger
Leaving it to charge overnight from USB
Singing to it
Specifics:
Stock firmware
Viewsonic VPAD7
Model#: VS13761
Any help would be appreciated (even as mundane as saying "its hardware is fried") etc, just want some clarify on what happened if their is no way to fix it.
Thank you in advance
Same problem
Even My Vpad 7 is having the same problem.
Can anyone shed light to the above problem?

Let's start with here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1015005 - post #6
Can you hold the "Volumn" Down button while pressing the Power button to get into FTM mode (diagnostic screen) - make a note of the basic information it displayed.
To exit/reset - you might need to use a small pin to press the Reset button at the lower bottom (left) of the device to get it to reboot.
If it does not reboot, power down or shut-off, does it stay on with only the RED LED flashing.
Probably the battery is dead or dying..
i am in a similar situation.. i can only see a Red flashing LED. the tab wont reboot, go into diagnostics or respond to any plethora of button press combinations..
For those of you reporting problems with your Vpad7 - apparently not responding & only flashing red LED, can you access/read/verify your device's FTM status? Does it show any sort of boot-up sequence at all (the 3 birds being the common one for official Viewsonic Vpad 7's?
Please re-check your mSD card - you have one inserted right? properly formatted and not corrupted, readable as a USB drive when taken out & connected to a PC? Try removing any Sim card or vice versa, insert one and try to boot it up? Has the battery being charged to 100% (using the stock 2.0A charger - typically take 4 to 8 hours)?
Since it's NOT rooted and has no custom recovery installed (right !) - even a successful effort to boot into Recovery Mode won't help at all, but, it will help if you can get into bootloader mode.
Still following ... if everything checked out up to now, it's very likely that your ROM was corrupted/damaged and you need to reflash the "correct" factory ROM (RUU or *.nb0 file) using the factory utility - as discussed in the referenced link .
If you think you know what you are doing and dare to try a DIY rescue by flashing it all over (got nothing to lose anyway, it's a brick - paperweight at this point) - see if you can access the viewsonic website and download the files directly ... if you cannot download/access the files, please post here or PM for possible alternatives from my private collection now in cloud storage (it's geared mostly for newer/ITE devices, however, but not all of it) Please be specfic with your model's firmware/build & other info as shown under FTM or see your factory carton's box for the technical info.
If it's under warranty, by all means, contact support & get RMA to return it for repair/exchange - in 2 to 3 weeks (4 ?) you will have it back in working order, good as new - no fuzz, no worries & the "brick" can fly in android again.
If none of these apply, another possibility for the advanced users daring to play in a "what do I get to lose at this point situation" - to try to connect it to PC and run ADB using terminal emulator, to try to bring it back to life or at least restart/reboot it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1229804
Good luck & I will check back soon ...
Unfortunately, mine will respond to none of these. nothing shows up on the computer when i plug it in.. not a sound, nothing. i may try booting up my old linux partition and see what /var/log/messages has to say when i plug it in..
i have an inkling that the battery has completely died though.. its a smart battery so has a PCB attached to it. if this has gone then i doubt the tab will power up.. unfortunately, replacement batterys arent easy to source..
i will let you know how i get on with it later on tonight when the GF and Kid have gone to sleep so i have some peace to potter around the house..
cheers for all your help my friend!
Today I plugged it in to my computer.
There was a white flash on the screen then same thing happened again.
The red light will blink sometimes or it will stay on as if it is charging but nothing is showing up on the screen.
Does anyone know how to open up the viewpad 7 or a manual on how to change the battery?

removing the back is rather simple.. run a credit card or any thin plastic along the edge starting at any corner.
good luck finding a replacement battery though.. i have searched high and low and cant find then for sale to the public that isn't a bulk order anywhere.
if you do find somewhere, please let me know..
Mine is an olivepad but I think the viewpad 7 and olivepad are the same hardware wise. (I may be wrong).
Maybe we can exchange the battery with another with the same voltage rating. And maybe higher mAh rating for better battery life?
It's already bricked so I don't mind experimenting a bit.
Here are some pictures I snapped.

Viewpad 7 won't charge battery and power on
Hi
Seems like it might be enough to just parallel connect a phone battery, with 3,7v to the battery PCB for a short period, to be able to charge the battery again.
Mogens
I disconnected the battery for 30s and assembled it back again, but the red flashing continues and it can't be turned on or charged.
Battery is over discharged.
1 - Open it and disconnect battery connector on mother board and reconnect and try to charge. If the battery percentage appears on screen appears and moving means its charging. Charge for few hours then turn on.
2 - Disconnect battery connector and charge it for 5 mins by using any 5V 1A power source for any mobile. Then put back battery connector and charge using original charger. If no other 5v 1 A source available, you have to cut the wire of same original charger and use +ve and -ve.

[Q] Out of battery - does not charge

Hello
i need help
yesterday, my htc one x+ went out of battery
then, it does not charge any more
i left it all the night plugged, but still cant startup
any idea ?
thanks
its a Stock Phone or customized?
Not even bootloader?
So it's completely dead? Does it boot to the bootloader by holding down volum- and power button?
Are you using a Custom Recovery there are problems with it when the battery gets down to zero. It's happened to me a few times, and I panicked the first time.
Plug it into the wall, hold down volume down, and then power. After 15 - 30 seconds, this should get you into the HTC Menu, I then chose Recovery, and from Recovery launch into System.
-- started up --
Thanks all of you for your help!
sorry for tardive response
it is a standart ROM (no operator) and rooted
here is how finaly :
- must plug it on the wall, not to a PC(dont know why)
- try to switch on with power + volum-down buttons
- after several tries , i get a fastboot menu
- tried all the lines ont the menu : but it never boot, never charge
- finaly, deseperated, i choose "shutdown" line in the fastboot menu
then it restarted correctly with htc animation - ouf - dont understand...
i will never let it go out of battery again
thanks again
:highfive:
It is important to know that the wall charger adapter has a greater current output than just the USB cable in a computer. The wall charger will always be faster (assuming it is relatively modern and has a sufficient amperage) in charging your phone. It may be better to use the one provided by the phone, but generally any wall adapter should suffice in a pinch.
I believe that since the USB is so weak, you either did not wait long enough to let it sufficiently charge, or it simply did not keep up. I've had phones plugged into the computer on charge mode and still have it lose power.
Also, if your computer was turned off, then it wouldn't have been pushing any charge to your phone anyway.

[Q] Galaxy Tab 2 P5110 dead. Advanced troubleshooting.

This is what i have.
Galaxy Tab 2 GT P5110 No power. and no signs life at all..
This is what i tried.
1. Left charging over night with a different charger that i know for a fact works.
2. Tried all combination of button presses. Power 15 sec, 30 sec. Power + touching screen 30 sec. Power + vol up. power +vol down. etc.
3. Replaced P5110 logic board with P5113.
4. Left all components unplugged with the exception of battery, power ribbon, lcd and digitizer ribbon.
None of these made a difference.
What can i try next? When i plug it in to charge, no light comes on. Should there be a light on the tablet if charging? or maybe a battery indicator on the screen? I'm trying to rule out the power button. The next possible solution for me would be the battery or the battery charge port. Any ways to troubleshoot any of these two?!
thanks

Thank you so much.. that service manual will definitely come in handy.
Last night i went to my cousins house since he had two P5113 models that were awaiting screens for replacement (he works at a rental center). I tried one of his batteries and it fired up right away. Long story short, it ended up being the dock ribbon cable. I tried one of his, and it started charging my battery! lesson learned.. ha...
Thank you.
From reading your post I was thinking about a faulty battery, but good you found out the problem
Sent through time and space from my s3mini/CM10.1
You told that you have replaced the PCB with one from the P5113.
So I guess they are compatible? Can I replace a P5110 with this board?
Battery Open circuit - Boost Method
This happened to me recently.
I left my tab discharge for a very long time. All the basic things wouldn't get the device to start charging again.
I checked the battery voltage and found that the battery had gone open circuit. This is a mechanism of the battery protection IC to protect against extreme discharge of the Li-Ion battery. My device was unable to wake the battery from this state - I guess that this is very bad design on Samsung's part.
To get around this do the following:
1. make sure that your battery is disconnected from the main circuit board.
2. get/ borrow/ steal a constant-current constant-voltage variable PSU.
3. set the PSU up at 4.2v with the current limited at 200mA
4. attach the leads to the battery and turn it on. ( red to red and black to black ! this can be done with small clips or multi meter probes )
5. wait for the battery voltage to rise from < 2.7v to around 3.6v.
6. disconnect the leads and re-attach the battery to the main circuit board.
7. before you package everything up connect you charger and turn the device on with the power button.
note: you don't have to complete #5, as long as the voltage raises to > 3.3v should be enough to stop the protection IC from defaulting back to protect mode and allow charging via the normal method.
This was very annoying for me, luckily I know a couple of things about how these systems work. If I didn't someone would have made a load of money out of me or the device would have ended up in the bin.
This is a general solution to problems of this kind not specifically limited to the Galaxy Tab 10.1

Kirem,
The GT-P5113 battery is actually a battery pack consisting of two batteries. The single connector from the pack that attaches to the main board of the GT-P113 has two red wires, two black wires and one blue wire. I'm assuming the blue wire is a "balance" charging lead, the red and black wires connect to each individual battery respectively (bat1+, bat1-), (bat2+, bat2-).
When charging using your method, I assume both batteries (or cells) need to be charged at the same time and with the same amperage. Is this assumption correct?

[Q] Charging paused. Battery temperature too low

P7510 - TAB 10.1 - won't power up on battery - but when plugged into the mains using the Samsung provided battery charger has an issue that I can't get around. Sequence as follows:
1. Plug into mains power
2. Battery charging icon appears on screen
3. Starts to flash a yellow triangle with a thermometer
4. Hit power button button and TAB tries to start up
5. Goes through initial cycle of swirling through the stars and ends up with the SAMSUNG logo on the screen - sits there for a minute or two
6. Posts message - Battery Critically Low.
7. Posts a 2nd message over the top of that saying Charging Paused. Battery Temperature Too Low.
8. Sits there for a minute or two and then goes back to Step 3. above.
Question: When on mains power, does the TAB still need to see the battery? If the battery is completely dead, will that cause this issue (een though it's running on the mains)?
I've read quite a few other forums where the device (usually a phone) has been wet and there's a whole bunch of things that you can do with it. BUT, this is a tablet and it's not been wet. I can't take the battery out (easily). I can't access the OS to check any features, I can't boot up into safe mode or bypass anything - it simply doesn't get that far. It's not been rooted, so I don;t knwo what to do?
Is it as simple as buying a new battery?

[HARD BRICK] No sign of life, just QHSUSB_BULK in device manager

Please help! My dear friend asked me to fix her broken 610 from what I couldn't even restore to the original ROM. I've tried to download some roms that were as close as to the device that I have (a Polish PLAY.pl 610) but unfortunately couldn't load it through fastboot, adb or recovery. But that's not the subject right now.
All was ok (I could boot it up to fastboot), but one night I sat it down, and the next day it was dead.
- The orange diode doesn't light up when plugged to PC/socket charging
- Power, Power+VolUp, Power+VolDown, none of the combination work, the screen doesnt even flicker
ALL that shows that it is there, is a QHSUSB_BULK unknown device in Windows Device Manager...
Is there a way to fix it? I didn't manage to flash the ROM I just rooted it with HTCs tools, the next day it was like this.
Thanks!

Sounds like a dead flat battery. Take it to a phone repairer and get them to give the battery a boost charge . You can do this your self if you know what your doing but these battery's can explode if you don't know what you doing and you'll need the right equipment, so if YOU DECIDE to try this be very careful (I am not responsible for any damage that may occur if YOU DECIDE to attempt these repairs yourself).
- remove the phones back cover
- disconnect the battery
- connect the battery (with correct polarity) to a bench top power supply with the voltage set to 3.5 volts DC and current limit set to 150 mA (this is very important, incorrect polarity or power supply settings may result in flames or explosions) and monitor the battery voltage. Once it is above 3 volts you are done.(if the battery seems to be getting hot at all during this process stop immediately)
- reconnect the battery and and give it a full charge as per normal in the phone.
