Samsung Fascinate Root and ICS

Hey, Ive been wanting to get ICS on my Verizon Samsung Fascinate, I'm just really confused and what i need to do to get it on my phone after rooting. I want to use CM7 but i dont know which to use (Nightly/Stable).
All from bhfd64 on the Galaxy Forums
[HOW TO] Root Froyo or Gingerbread on Your Fascinate
Below you'll find the steps to attain root access on your Samsung Fascinate, but keep in mind that along with risking damage to your phone, you'll be voiding your warranty. This guide assumes you've taken the most recent OTA update and are running official Gingerbread. The responsibility for any damage incurred by following this guide is yours and yours alone.
NOTE 1: These instructions are for PC only. They will not work for Mac users.
NOTE 2: These instructions should work for any stock Gingerbread build on the Fascinate.
Downloads:
Download Samsung drivers from HERE.
Download Odin (computer program) from HERE.
Download ClockworkMod Recovery from HERE (place this file somewhere on your computer where you can easily locate it).
Download "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file from HERE (place this file on the root of your sdcard...not within any folders).
Instructions:
1. Install Samsung drivers on your computer.
2. Open Odin on your computer. (You may need to disable antivirus programs on your computer and/or phone for this to work properly.)
3. Power off your phone and remove the battery.
4. Plug the stock USB cord that came with your phone into a powered USB port on your computer (usually on the back of the computer).
5. Press and hold the "volume down" button on your phone, and continue to hold it while plugging the USB cord into your phone. This will put your phone into download mode. You'll see a large yellow triangle on the screen of your phone. (Let go of the volume button at this point.) You will also see one of the small boxes in Odin turn yellow, as well as "Added" appearing in the message box.
6. Click the PDA button in Odin (NOT the PHONE button) and navigate to the "CWM3_Voodoo.tar.md5" file you downloaded earlier. This file does not include a voodoo kernel and will not perform the voodoo lagfix conversion. It's only named as such to note that it is compatible with voodoo kernels.
7. Click START. When this process has finished, you'll be notified in Odin (succeeded 1 / failed 0) and your phone's screen will go blank.
8. Unplug your phone and re-insert the battery.
9. Press and hold BOTH volume buttons. While holding them, press the power button. Hold all three simultaneously until you see "SAMSUNG" appear. This will boot your phone into ClockworkMod Recovery. If your phone boots up normally here and not into recovery, just wait for it to boot up and then power it down and try again. It may take a couple tries for you to get it right.
10. Using the volume rocker, navigate down to "Install zip from sdcard." Highlight it and press the power button to select.
11. Navigate to "choose zip from sdcard" and select with the power button.
12. Navigate to the "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file that you downloaded earlier and select it. Scroll to "Yes," and use power button to select.
13. When you're advised of completion, press the MENU softkey to go back to the previous CWM Recovery screen, then highlight and select "reboot system now."
At this point your phone will reboot and you'll be rooted. Open up your app drawer. You should see an app called "Superuser." If it's there, you're done! Now you can think about possibly moving on to a custom ROM and/or kernel. Instructions for flashing a custom ROM can be found here.
Thanks for any help and sorry for the Questions i read around and couldn't find anything i understood.

I know u may not have files for this or even know what it is, but have you tested to see if adb or fastboot work at all? Might be unrelated but I think that it shows if samsung drivers are working correctly

Installing custom roms
1. Download the custom rom you want and place it on you phone. (Preferred on external SD card)
2. To install custom roms you have to go into CWM (clock work mod). you can enter CWM by going into terminal and type "su" and then "reboot recovery" OR turn your device off, then press volume"-" + Hotkey + power button until it vibrates and shows LG logo then release only power button and keep pressing both of the others for about 8 seconds then release.
3. While you are in CWM you can navigate with the + and - volume buttons and the power button is enter.
4. Before you install any new rom, wipe everything from your phone by going to "mounts and storage menu" --> format /cache, /data and /media, /system, /sdcard, then wipe the dalvik cache under the advanced tab. If you don't do this you can get problems!
So now you can select your customrom.zip and press the power button, your rom will now install. after it is installed you can reboot your phone and if you did everything right your phone should boot into your new rom, the first boot can take a long time sometimes.

FAQ
Q1] I'm facing White Screen during recovery!
> This is because you are on an older firmware version. You should download a firmware later than S7262XXUAND5.
Recommended firmware version: S7262XXUANF1
Remember. Flash only if u have white screen recovery problem. Otherwise you don't need to.
Steps to flash firmware:
1] Download the firmware
2] Extract the .zip file with Winrar
3] You will get a .tar.md5 file
4] Follow Steps 4 to 16 mentioned above. But you will flash the (firmware name).tar.md5 instead of recovery.tar.md5
5] After this, flash the recovery by the procedure mentioned above.
6] Your recovery should now work

I also have the same firmware and this method is working perfectly for me. I think I know what you are doing wrong, first you have to press the power button and then immediately press volume up + home button, when you see the S7262 logo, leave the power button but keep holding volume up + home button until you see the recovery. :good:
Thanks for the recovery.
Verified Working
I have completed this root method and verified it works using the S7262XXUANJ1 stock ROM. Doing everything as stated, it works perfectly - no white screen, no soft brick or malfunctions. :highfive:
EDIT: After the final startup I had to update SuperSU via Google Play.

How to Flash TWRP Recovery
Download the latest version of Odin and the Samsung USB drivers
Enable OEM unlock:
Go to Settings » About phone » and tap Build number seven times to enable Developer options.
Go back to main Settings page, scroll to bottom and select Developer options from there.
Under Developer options, look for Enable OEM unlock checkbox/toggle and enable it.
Boot your device into Download mode:
Switch off your device.
Press and hold “Home + Power + Volume down” buttons for a few seconds until you see a warning screen.
Press Volume Up on the warning screen to accept it and boot into Download mode.
Flash TWRP with Odin
Once your device is in download mode, connect it to the PC with a USB cable. The Odin window on PC should detect the device and show an “Added!!” message.
Now click on the AP tab on Odin window and select the TWRP recovery .tar file that you downloaded for your device.
Click the Start button on Odin and wait for it to finish the process. Once it has finished successfully, you’ll see a pass message on the Odin screen.
Your device will automatically reboot when Odin is done flashing. You can then disconnect your device.
How to boot TWRP Recovery
Switch off your device.
Press and hold “Home + Power + Volume Up” buttons for a few seconds and as soon as you see your device’ logo on-screen, release three buttons altogether. Your device will boot into TWRP recovery.

There has been a lot of changes and fixes. You can look at them here https://twrp.me/ . I would always recommend using the latest version.
Having a bit of trouble with the drivers I believe, I keep getting device unrecognized in Windows, tried two different machines, same issue. Any idea what is wrong?
I am getting the same when in recovery mode and in normal Android OS.
I am not getting the popup that says Use USB to transfer files etc, it just says slow charging.
Error is Uknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

Install device drivers and adb/fastboot ones. Search here on XDA, I'm sure you'll find them :good:

I have installed the ones linked at the top of this post. Is that the reason why is happening?
Is it not strange that when I am not in recovery and just booted to normal android and try to connect to my PC it also happens?
Hooked up my Samsung phone and Odin picked it up instantly - thinking the usb port on the table is gone and is only charging now. If that happened there is no way to TWRP without it right?
I'll look for those drivers thanks.

Try these drivers and let me now if they fix your problem.

Also you can try cleaning your usb port with a small piece of plastic or a pin. They can get packed with dirt sometimes. Also try a different cable.
Tried them too but it looks like the usb port is damaged and needs replacing
Got my usb port fixed, OEM unlock in dev mode, ran odin along with the twrp-3.3.1-1-gtaxlwifi.img.tar file but it doesn't seem to work. Tried twice and this is what I get after powering on with Power + Home + Up Volume which seems like the default bootloader?
Odin completed ok too. Any idea why it won't take?

It probably is taking but getting immediately overwritten because you are allowing it to reboot into the system. When you flash TWRP with Odin, you need to click Option and uncheck the auto reboot. Then, after flashing, hold the Home, Vol down and Power buttons until the screen goes black. Then, VERY quickly switch from Vol down to Vol up until the Samsung logo screen appears. Then release the Power button while still holding Vol up and Home and the tablet will boot into TWRP. After that, you can reboot system and TWRP will remain as the recovery app.
Yup that did the trick, thanks
How can I make a full backup of stock OS using TWRP? Is it safe to restore from that backup in the future if needed?

You can't. The data partition is encrypted and TWRP can't handle it.

There are backup apks in Play Store. You just can't use TWRP. Typically, people install TWRP because they want to root and use custom ROMs. Before using TWRP to flash custom ROMs, you must first format the data partition to get rid of the encryption. But that erases EVERYTHING on it. Including any saved video, audio, pictures or apps. Even Google apps. But remember, by installing TWRP, you have already tripped knox, so you won't be getting any further updates from Samsung.
If you really want a stock ROM that you can backup with TWRP, it might be possible to format the data partition and then flash the stock opengapps for the version of stock ROM, probably ARM 32bit 8.1. But I don't know of anyone whose tried it. Of course, you need to backup any data you want to save and reinstall any Play Store or sideloaded apks you are using.
Plan is to try a couple of custom ROMs and if any issues go back to one of these: https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-tab-a/firmware/SM-T580/ that shouldn't be a problem right?
Also I have wiped data which cleared everything and then when I tried to go wipe dalvik/system/data/cache in preparation for LineageOS, but it keeps failing because of /data, still encrypted after the initial format?
Why does it not work?

Did you choose the format Data option in the wipe screen? You should have typed yes to confirm.
Got it sorted in the end, the problem was I had booted to the OS after wiping that instead of just installing the zip which solved it, thx
So glad I was directed to this forum thx @srgrusso. I flashed the official version of TWRP using the TWRP app from the app store and it work just like it was supposed to. Thank for suggesting I give it a try. I will be using it go forward, to verify, backup and update my TWRP from the official web site. Thanks again for all you do for the T580 device, you have breath new life and interest into this device for me. I love playing around with now.
