Software and Firmware updates - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am in US and am thinking of getting the Z5C on AT&T. Since AT&T does not really sell this device, does anyone know how software and firmware updates will work, since the carrier will not push through any updates for this particular device?

You'll get unbranded version and you will not need to wait for carrier to push updates.

You can flash any customization you wish using flashtool, and OTA updates come directly from Sony. I bought an import with Hong Kong firmware and flashed it to Nordic version. Has everything that a US version would have, except 4G icon instead of LTE.

I bought mine on Amazon from a prime seller. Was sourced from the HK SAR market since it has that particular firmware. Says 4G instead of LTE but that is fine and I get firmware updates direct from Sony. Great device.

Why did you flash a Nordic version? Is that your region and is there any advantage over the Taiwan version I have (I'm in the U.S. and it has U.S. English already). Thanks.

Just my preference, I like not having the NFC icon in status bar when it's on, and don't need all the additional languages/keyboards of HK version it shipped with.
Generally, European regions seem to get update sooner than others.

Thanks. I hate the NFC icon too. I didn't know it wasn't there in certain firmwares. Maybe when Marshmallow comes I'll flash a different region.

I read that Z5/Z5c is releasing in US on February 7th, so we'll get an official US firmware soon.

True but I think I'll stay away from U.S. firmware until I find out what, if any, extra bloatware it contains. Also, isn't the U.S. generally slow to get updates due to its size? Is there a ranking somewhere that shows which regions update first and what the firmware variations are?

some websites are also stating US version will not come with fingerprint sensor.. What's wrong with Sony!

Another reason to stay away from the U.S. firmware when it's released

[Q] NaviFirm updating question

Hey everyone
I just received my Lumia 920 today. Phone is amazing!
it came with the cv-HK firmware (country varient Hong Kong?) since I ordered it through mobicity.com.au and they get their stock from Hong Kong :S
I have flashed the latest Australian stock ROM (cv-AU) and was wondering if I will receive updates in the future?

Who knows for sure.....but....I've done Navifirm flashes before and this has never prevented updates from taking place. I'm sure if it had, others might have posted this before. You should be ok....

Thanks for the reply
I was pretty much wondering the same thing. I think my 920 is unbranded but I don't want to wait 'til Feb to get the updates so I was wondering about using Navifirm as soon as suitable firmware appears for my phone.
Does anyone out there know if this will mean I'll always have to manually update in the future or will I get notifications like everyone else on the firmware I install?
Thanks.
Edit: Turns out my phone isn't unbranded. Now I'm tempted to de-brand. If only game saves could be backed up.
I'm intrested too with this.
I bought my 920 in Italy and flashed using navifirm with the world fw unbranded. Now i'm in Brazil and not getting the update.....can't tell if because it's not available here or because i flashed.......any opinions?

I just realised, that when I had my Lumia 800, I flashed the unbranded aus ROM over the Telstra one, and I received updates straight away.
So, it shouldn't be an issue when an update is released.

Yeah Nokia have only released the new Portico update for certain carriers in certain markets so far. They also said it would be available across the globe in February 2013 (which I believe is an under-promise) and should be available around January sometime.
Trust me, if you have flashed a different region ROM, you will still receive the updates. I have flashed and re-flashed the crap out of my Lumia 800 and 900 last night and they both keep receiving updates. Lumia 920 will be no different. Once the update is available in the region of your ROM, the phone will get the update.

European warranty valid on Chinese M10 with European ROM?

So a seller is selling a Chinese Mate 10 but he will install an international ROM on it. The question is, is it the IMEI number that tells you the origination of the phone or the software version?
When I bought my Mate 9, it was the C636 Asia version and had no idea at the time it is not covered by Huawei UK support. So is it ok to buy a Chinese Mate 10 with an international ROM, or should I buy it somewhere in Europe where it is released like Spain or Mexico? I would like the phone to be covered by Huawei Support but not sure if they check the IMEI or Firmware version to determine if it is eligible for support/warranty.
Am in the UK.
Thank you!
It will not be covered.

Hmmm I am tempted to get one from China as it would be the 6gb, 128gb version for the same price as the 4gb, 64gb version in Europe. I works just lose the official support. Hmmm!

You will also notice some other minor issues as there is a reason the Chinese devices are separate from others. Things like GPS and the way cell signal are done are very different then in the rest of the world. I would do some research first as there are thousands of horror stories of people buying the China version of devices and things just not being dependable.

Oreo for Unlocked U1 now LIVE!!

About time!
german version still not here...
Possible to update to CRC2 or later from U1 version of CRC1? Interesting that carriers updated to a later build than Samsung unlocked devices.
No luck here in The Netherlands

The title states it's for the Unlocked U1, which is the US SnapDragon version not the European version.

No. If it were possible, they would've just released CRC2 instead of CRC1. If you want CRC2, then you'll have to flash a carrier version of the firmware.
As far as why they released a later version for carriers, it's very possible the higher build number is due to having to add, test, and perfect carrier features and the BYOD features. It doesn't mean CRC2 is in anyway BETTER than CRC1. I actually had better battery life on C1 compared to C2.

The Indonesian Note 8 got two different OS versions on the same day? How is that possible?

Thanks for this reply (and for cleaning up the thread). I was considering going to C5 in order to get the April security update; carrier software wouldn't be the worst thing, as it would enable RCS and video calling when I'm using T-Mobile. These are features I can live without, as I occasionally run an Xfinity Mobile sim, and I'd also have to work around play store certification. I'll just relax a bit on C1, it's more than I had yesterday!
I got this yesterday on my AT&T IMEI, but am running U1. Was it because it was AT&T or am I on the U1 update cycle?
I got the update yesterday morning. I'm on Sprint. Everything is working so far.

Confused on Mate 10 pro versions need help

I understand or have found 3 different versions
BLA-A09
BLA-L29
BLA-L09
From what I can see the A09 version is the USA version.
I don't care what version is what, I just care about updates as fast as possible (out of the 3 versions listed) VoLTE for T-mobile and maybe At&t in the future but not sure.
Which is the better version to have ? No I don't travel out of the country.
I was also told that the A09 version can't be rebranded? (Not sure what the reasons to save and is but saw it mentioned someone like it's a downfall of some sort.)
Pro's and con's I guess is what I need.
Thanks

BLA-A09 is its own device, you can not rebrand A09 to L09/L29 or L09/L29 to A09. If you have an A09 now you're stuck with that. L09 = single sim, L29 = dual sim.
It's the Cust that matter.
Generally C432 and C636 get updates faster. But AL00C00 (Chinese) get the fastest updates.

Yeah I just need to know about the VoLTE and which model with have those capabilities.
So the A09 model which is a US version I have read is left in the dark when it comes to updates cause the USA more less tried to block this phone from being sold so anyone who has a choice in models should get the L29 or L09 model for USA use ?
Is there any truth to the above?
Does the international version use the same charger as the US version? Is anyone here using the international version in the US? How are the updates like?

I meant the L29 version. I just checked and it uses an different charger, but they'll provide the adapter for it to work in the US.

Yeah from my research I need to get the L29 VERSION instead of the A09 US version, to be used in the US.
Is that what you have read as well?
I'm so interested in this device but this post is just another reason I'm avoiding for now. Versions, updates, bluetooth screwed up, notifications not working, camera jacked, dimming display, etc... I read articles about it and see youtube reviews that swear this thing is pure gold but the amazon reviews and other threads seem to say otherwise. WHY ME?????

The A09 version works with everything GSM in the US and has a one year warranty. The L29 version doesn't have warranty (since it's an international model) and I read it doesn't support VoLTE on T-Mobile.
The reason I'm deciding between the two is because the L29 version is cheaper than the A09 version and has more frequent updates. The thing I'm worried about is the L29's compatibility with US (T-Mobile) carriers. I heard it works for almost everyone, but some people had carriers block them due to the international version. I was also concerned about the charger, but it looks like they'll provide an adapter. I'm waiting out until closer to Black Friday to get the phone for cheap, hopefully close to $400.
I didn't know the L29 model didn't support VoLte.

Oops, I should've been more clear. It doesn't support VoLTE on T-Mobile, but you can rebrand it to the US (A09) version and it'll work then. I don't know about AT&T because I only plan to use it on T-Mobile.
Ok so my understanding is the A09 version is last to get the updates but you mentioned can rebrand to L29 to A09 which I thought I read somewhere in here you couldn't but if you actually can go L29-A09- "rebrand" does that effect updates in the "branding aspects?

Question Wanting to get the grey version in us, will I run into issues

Is there a US version of this phone? Or just the international.
Will I be fine using the grey version in the us? Is there anything I should be aware of?
there is definitely a us version. sold by b&h, best buy and amazon.

What carrier are you going to be using the phone on?
They gray version is not sold in the US and will not come with US firmware. Most of the bands and such are the same but band 71 is not present on the international (in this case gray) version and might not be a good fit to use on Tmobile. Also this is unlikely to work on Verizon either (I got it to work, but not stable).
