HTC Desire S HTC Test Menu with Carbon installed - Test Menu code not working? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey XDA forum,
I've recently rooted my HTC Desire S phone and installed this version of Carbon on it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2500130
so that I now have Android version 4.3.2 installed. However, I noticed I didn't have the normal Voice Recorder app present on my phone and since one of my primary uses of my mobile phones is that I want to record my voice for music ideas, I need a voice recorder.
So I started looking around on the Google Play Store for the Voice Recorder app that normally comes built-in with your phone. For some reason, it's not present. Anyway, downloading other voice recording software like
RecForgeII or Audio Evolution Mobile Studio (DEMO version in my case), I found out my microphone now has terrible noise being throughput in total silence. Additionally, whenever I speak, the audio level is insanely high and there's distortion and clipping coming in even from a meter away.
So I assume the microphone gain has been set to a too high level.
I figure I need to go into Android Engineer Mode and adjust the microphone settings. After doing a search on the net, I found out I could access the Android Engineer Mode by dialing
*#*#3424#*#*
Now, as soon as I type the closing *, the whole code disappears. However, no HTC Test menu is opened.
How do I access the menu?
Is there another way to adjust microphone gain?
Have others had similar problems after rooting and installing custom ROMs?
Thanks for your help,
Shrooblord

Additionally, I just made a call with my girlfriend and she let me know that in calling, my microphone shows the same behaviour: I sounded distorted and loud and we could only talk normally when I put my phone a meter away from my mouth and used headphones to listen.
I could really use your android expertise on this one, folks.

Work-around
I've ended up not doing this through the Engineer Mode nor with the installation of Carbon.
To fix this, I decided to move away from Clockwork Recovery Mod in favour of TWRP so that I could install Cyanogenmod 12 on my HTC Desire S. After a series of unfortunate events including bricking and successively un-bricking my phone (that took a long time to figure out haha), I've completely installed and personalised my new Android device (it really feels like it's a whole new phone - it's just in an old shell ) and am now running smoothly on Android version 5.1. It also automatically seems to have fixed my mic problem (which I hoped it would). Yay!
But I couldn't have done it if it weren't for this forum and many other resources like this out there on the web. My advice to you when hacking your phone to root it or to install a custom ROM or to fix microphone issues is to look around and not give up searching. It took me a grand total of what I estimate is around 40-50 hours from knowing nothing about custom ROMs and rooting and the like to getting a decent understanding of what steps to perform, how to perform them and more importantly, why. So keep looking. The answer's out there!
And if you can't figure it out today, go to bed and look at it tomorrow. I can tell you, there's nothing quite like approaching a problem with a head full of fresh ideas after a good night's rest.
Good luck out there.
If you've got problems, I'll do my best to keep an eye out on this thread and see if I can help you out.

X iPhone user

I just switched from an iPhone to the G-Note. While I love the phone and the great screen on it, I have a few issues I just don't get and I would "hope" there are work arounds too. Not being in this world of android long however, I'm lost so after digging around and trying to fix things on my own, I'm coming back here with the few remaining questions / issues.
1) Contact Images - WTF is up with the 96x96 crap? I'm pretty sure my old windows 3.1 could handle those too. When my iPhone rang, it would show great full screen images of the caller and not this crappy little image. I've played with a few apps to overcome this, but they all feel like a kludge to me. I am sync'd with both google and exchange contacts, and the problem is on both of them, not one or the other. I know ICS will up that to 256/256 (only on the local device, the sync data to gmail will still be 96/96 acording to the post i was reading by a google dev), but still, most ALL new phones are at least 720p ( or close ).
2) Quality of Apps - No description needed. The quality of Apps for the android, with a few exceptions, doesn't even compair. As an example, where are the real GPS apps? And those that do exist, I can't find a single one that lowers the volume of playing music etc to give directions. This is a STANDARD for all gps systems today, including my aftermarket in car radio...
3) WHY is 1-202-555-1234 not the same as 202-555-1234 as a contact phone number? Really? I get seperate logs for them this way, as well seperate entries in the contacts info ( when for instance I sync with say facebook and they included a "1" in the info there ).
4) Music Player - Similar complaint to #3. But why is the band "Van Halen" not the same as "van halen" in the info? For that matter, it does the same with the album name as well. This does not just hold true for Music player either, many many apps on this platform do this. This has forced me to spend COUNTLESS hours going over my music library on the old PC to make sure everything is the exact same in each and every mp3 file. EVERY programming language in the last 20 years allows you to do case insensitive comparisons...( strcmp, stricmp anyone? ).
5) Ya know, my list is MUCH longer then this, but for the life of me, now that I'm sitting here to rant/ask how to overcome some of these issues, I can't think of them... Story of my life.
Just alot of "little" things like this that make it feel very.. "clunky" to me. I love some of the features, but some of the little unrefined parts are just a pisser.
Jailbroken / rooted what ever. Yes I was jailbroken on my iphone and yes I'm rooted on the GNote.
1. Try GO Contacts or Dialer One(from Market)
2. No can do my friend. Personally I don't think so.
3. Again, Go Contacts or Dialer One
4. Umm... Alternative music player? WinAmp, PowerAmp, DoubleTwist etc.(I don't know why, but that didn't happen on my phone)

This is a samsung touchwiz issue/feauture. I first had an HTC desire then I got a Samsung Galaxy S2, the hardware is great but the software still (after a year of owning the SGS2) feels pretty rough, unlike HTC's Sense

Sygic and Navigon are there I guess only TomTom is missing; If you really miss a feature in Sygic usually if you post it in the forum you will find a in an update with 2-3 months.

2. Really, I've used a friend's iPhone and the apps honestly are the same. I'm not sure what you are talking about...? Google Maps with Navigation Beta is an awesome free navigation system. It's gotten me out of messes just fine. And I think your audio issue is a problem with your OEM. Mine handles lowering the volume just fine. Maybe try another ROM?
3. The numbers are different due to a number of issues. Gosh, how do I explain this.... Ok. All outside-of-area code numbers are now supposed to be dialed as 1 (555) 201 2222 instead of (555) 201 2222 to help the system establish the country. This is especially true for landlines. Since you're on an international phone it helps to add the 1 (or even +1).
So just make it a habit to add +1. So enter it as +15552012222.
I hope that helps.
A couple ICS roms are ready for the Note although they are beta(so what? i used CM9 as my daily driver when it was just in alpha stage!)
Maybe try them first
You mentioned you were running CM9, is that ready in any "reliable" form for the i717? ( I don't have the international , I'm in the USA with "good old" at&t ).

[Q] Enabling phone on Jetstream - S-OFF issue?

Hi all,
I recently acquired a Jetstream in the US (AT&T) to bring back to France.
I'm pretty new to Android but I got the bootloader unlocked through htcdev.com, then managed to apply DoomLoRD's root and CWM recovery succesfully (excellent tutorial, BTW).
I now want to unlock the phone and reconfigure BT so I can use my regular BT headset (Nokia BH-109, supports HFP & HSP but no A2DP) following the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1418235, but that fails to work as the /system/build.prop file remains read-only.
Is there anything I've missed? Would that be because my Jetstream is still S-ON?
thanks in advance for any hint that gets me going!
François
Hi,
Welcome to the Jetstream community.
1st off, for you to be able to edit the /system/build.prop file, you need Root Explorer, navigate to the file, before opening it with the text editor, make sure to click on the R-W/R-R which you can find around the top left side of screen- it will basically change from read to write functionality in the system files. You will then be able to enable the options.
2nd, after following the steps, you will be able to get the phone app to show and you will be able to use MMI codes of the *123# sort perfectly. Coming to the call however, you will be able to make calls but no sound on either side of the calls. Still some bugs to be figured out and fixed. Some have got some clue about how to solve it - mentioned in the post with the instructions.
3rd, after following those instructions, you will be able to send and receive messages using a 3rd part app like GO SMS. Works perfectly well.
4th, the S-ON to S-OFF transition needs a lot of help from developers which is not happening as of yet. Hoping that someone will be able to really achieve this for us. It has been done for many other devices as well and we all here hope it will happen for the Jetstream too.
Hope it helps you and hope to have more people join the community of this wonderful device like you have just joined us and get this device moving soon.
-Kaialsh.
Hi Kaialsh,
thanks for taking the time to share your experience. I will look into Root Explorer for sure, even though I actually managed to answer my question when writing my original post got me thinking.
I'll write down what I found as it may be of help to others.
As I understood the problem was with the /system partition being mounted R/O I looked on the Market and found mount /system (rw/ro) and it seemed to work giving me a successful status, but the build.prop file remained R/O in vi, and Astro would not save it properly.
I then saw that DoomLoRD's custom kernel included R/W system partition and looking into that I found the adb remount command which did what I wanted, except it failed on my system.
Last bit was to boot the tablet into DoomLoRD's insecure kernel image (as I did before to root the Jetstream), then issue "adb remount", then edit build.prop and reboot again.
As you can see, it's not really straightforward and I wish I saw your post before all of this!
I did see the Audio problems with making calls and will be following the forum for a potential fix to this problem, but I have another issue right now...
Noise cancellation does not work at all and any attempt to make a VoIP call (SIP or Google Talk for instance) results in terrible echo at the other end of the line. The only way out is to use a headset and Bluetooth seems a reasonable choice.
Before the build.prop change, my Nokia headset (with HFP and HSP) would be detected and paired but would remain disconnected and no profile was listed (only options are to delete pairing or rename device). A set of Bluetooth headphones with A2DP support worked fine.
After the change, the device is paired and the headset profile listed as expected, but it still remains disconnected even though when I select it I get a "connected" popup. Of course, the headset will not give audio in any application, and the speaker works normally.
I'd be interested if someone around here has any hints into getting a regular cell phone Bluetooth headset to work with the Jetstream, as well as maybe a fix on the echo cancellation problem.
In any case, this forum is a goldmine
I too face the problem with google talk and sort-noise cancellation is bad. I however circumvented the problem by using a wired headset-no echo with that but the gain on audio was a bit low. I don't own a Bluetooth device myself to check and am kind of busy studying for exams go out and get myself one.
However, the basic problem seems to lie in the Mic settings and as mentioned in the section on enabling gsm calls, we need to check the codec files and anything related to Mic and htc audio libs. I did sit once checking for any potential files that contain details regarding this, but I was dumb enough not to note things down then and there so don't remember very well and haven't found the time to check it again. Will do so the earliest possible and share my findings. There was something about a particular file missing in the devices lost which seemed to be necessary for phone functionality.
Also, just out of curiosity, what is your main application with the Jetstream?

It's a shame I don't know enough about the platform to look into it myself, but I'm ready to try out any suggestion that comes forward!
What I intend to use the tablet for is remote desktop/VNC access to remote systems through ssh tunnels and voice/video conferencing, but at the moment I'm still in the discovery stages.

Cool. Welcome aboard once again.

Why does google navigation seem to have 2 voices now?

I've got the sprint evo lte with the charmelon rom on it. I'm not sure if this is something in the rom (thread is locked so i cant ask there) or if its something in android 4.0.x in general.
But for the last several weeks, maybe a month or two, google navigation seems to switch between two different voices.
One of them sounds much more artificial/computer generated, where as the second one sounds very human like a recording. I haven't really noticed a pattern to when it uses one voice over the other. Today for example it told me to make right turn and then make a left turn using the more human sounding voice. When i got to the point where i needed to make the left turn (which was maybe 10 seconds after i made the right) it switched back to the more artificial voice. In both cases it said pretty much the same thing so I don't understand why it needed to switch.
Is one voice generated by google's servers and downloaded? and the other voice generated on the phone itself?

Generic n00b Android questions (yes ive searched for a while)

I hope this is an acceptable to place to ask generic questions, there doesnt seem to be a general/off topic section anymore, but rather seems to be device specific only.
Ive been using Windows Mobile/Phone since prob 2009 (HTC Touch Pro on Sprint). Now that T-Mobile is shutting off their 3G network in July, im being forced off of my Lumia 950 since it cant do VoLTE without a registry hack for IMS registering that i only ever got to work once. The main reason ive held out for so long, is the Lumia's did everything i wanted them to do and without extra apps etc.
Ive got my Nokia 8.3 pretty much set up the way i want and all the Microsoft apps and such on it so that it kinda feels more like a Lumia than a Samsung, but im still having issues finding the answers to some nagging bits.
Now for some questions:
1. Is there really no way to have the prox sensor default to Speakerphone during a call when its not next to your ear? The only answer ive found is "Tasker this, Tasker that" and i think its bullcrap that something so basic isnt part of Android, if its supposed to be so much better than Windows Phone/Mobile. I used my Lumia almost exclusively as a speakerphone cause it was just that good.
2. This is a REALLY annoying one, especially coming from Windows, why cant OneDrive integrate into the apps? Ive tried having folders available for Offline use and still cant access anything in them in any app save for the Onedrive app. Any article i find on this only tells you about the OneDrive app, but not how to get it integrated properly into Android. Or, is this even possible? I have thousands of pics in various folders, mainly for meme access, so i dont have to carry them solely on a device or SD card. But, i dont want to have to go to OneDrive first, then find the image, download to the phone, go back to the app i was in and then wait for the image to show up 5 mins later for use.
3. Loading files into Ringtones doesnt make them available for apps outside of the stock sounds for that app?
4. More incremental control over volume? Im used to the 1-10 ringer and 1-30 "all other sounds" control, but Android seems to be set at like 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, or some other 'non single integer" increment. And its maddening that app sounds/notifications are so much louder than actual media voice/music/video sounds, but are tied together.
I think thats all i have for now. Thanks in advance.

Question Nokia X10 (X20) Android 13 chances of new ROM/ some-any ways to override settings/ "jail-break"???

In short : X10, UK, Android 13 - thanks, no thanks!
0 actual improvements as per discussed to some degree on Nokia "support forum".
Silly bloatware "features" added, but nothing what would be useful.
Have tried 50 apps of different kinds, enabling permissions (+ "developer mode"), yet still haven't found any that would record other person's voice, even thus is being transmitted via speaker or loudspeaker (heard).
Turns out down to legality issue, where's google has decided to undertake... 4'th party "responsibility, (3'rd would be Nokia), (1'st would be myself) and 2'nd party in it is the person who is to be it warned or not being recorded. Utter nonsense!
Looks like I cannot even downgrade back to neither Android 12 or 11 and custom ROM is the only option without any guarantees it'll work...
Deal breaker, and if I'll fail to find a fix or "jail-break this "feature"" will mean me binning my X10 for the older phone WITHOUT restrictions for recording, as google got scared of legality in CONTROLLING features and abilities of what it deemed as "their business" in EU and UK.
Turns out the back-up I've created is locked too- can not access it to upload for someone to have a play on virtual machine.
Deleted disabled most of google "feature" apps- still absolute the same my phone, but NOT mine, as OS is so great, it takes care of everything, including any chance to change permisions or the way it is set up.
Disappointed is understatement.
If anyone has ANY ideas how to fix this problem- I'd love to hear or if anyone would find a working bootloader for me to upload back up files- I'd love ANY suggestions,
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure there's a Magisk module that helps you with that problem. Requires you to unlock your phone's bootloader, though, which requires you to wipe your data on the phone.
