Screen broke after waist high drop. Returning phone question - Verizon LG V10

Long story short,
phone broke and Asurion sent replacement
My return window with VZW ends Friday.
Can I return an Asurion supplied phone?

I'm pretty sure they will check the IMEI to verify, so most likely no you cannot. That's what they did with me at least when I had to go in for a replacement, they compared the serial on the receipt to the phone.

Wow, I dropped mine from about 4 ft, minor scratches on bottom of frame but thats it...seemed like 30 minutes as it was falling...lol

I demonstrate it's durability to curious people daily lol.

[Q] Insurance on your TBolt, did you get it?

It is $6.99/month through vzw right?
What is the deductible? What does/doesn't it cover?
Has anyone ever used squaretrade? Its 99.99 for two years of Premium Smartphone Coverage (up to $600.00) Accidental damage claims = $50 deductible.
http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/cellphone-landing3
Any other options out there?
i got it, it is a 100 dollar dectuable for 2 replacements(maybe 2 in a 1 yr timespan)
I think it is worth it so you dont have to shell out 600 dollars for it if you break it
Nope. I do not get insurance. I am on a 1 year contract... no sense in paying the extra $7 per month and a $100 deductible. Pass.
Squaretrade is great. Definitely recommended. Just remember they don't cover loss or theft.
I have used insurance at least twice. I always get it. I have Square trade on my laptop but it takes a few days to get a new phone.
I have never used verizon. The price is 5.00 per month for the insurance and 1.99 for the extended warranty. The deductible is a little bit more than square trade but I know for a fact that assurion will overnight you a new phone ASAP.
Assurion does protect you from loss and theft!
I always buy insurance on my phones through Verizon. It covers almost everything including loss and theft. They don't ask too many questions when submitting a claim. A new phone is shipped next day air.

That is true, I forgot this is for a phone where it's mission critical to get a replacement.
Generally it's great if you can live without it for a few days.
Verizon insurance problems:
1. If the water sensor is triggered they wont cover your phone,(aka you enter a moist environment(shower rainstorm ect) and it doesnt break your phone, but your phone dies later for something else and your still not covered)
2. If you Ever have dropped your phone, then they refuse to cover it.
basically your giving them 5-7 a month to be covered against software issues imo.
I'm using best buy coverage, $10 a month anything happens to my phone and i can bring it in for a new one. only thing not covered is theft.
Do Verizon/assurion or squaretrade give you a new phone or refurbished? I had problems with Sprint and their constantly changing policies with my evo. I was sent a refurbished replacement for $35 which was very poor quality, the evo was known for screen separation issues, hairline cracks on the edge of the phone, etc. Sprint sometimes makes people take their phone to a store and wait hours, tried to tell me it was water damaged from 'probably humidity from my pocket' and it was generally unpleasant getting anything repaired or replaced. How does it work for various claims, repairs, etc

They cover lost or stolen so why would they care of it was liquid damaged or dropped? I think you may be mixing up insurance and the extended warranty.

I have gotten both new and refurbished phones from Asurion. I had one problem with the refurbished, and they sent me back another new one the next day free of charge. If you spend the money to get a thunderbolt, you might as well dish out that 6.99 a month for insurance. They protect against everything and charge a $50 deductible. Well worth it imo as I have used them 3 times with my old Moto Droid. Lol.
As a Verizon Wireless employee I'd like to cover this topic, as there are some COMPLETELY wrong bits of information, particularly the water part.
Insurance is through Asurion, they do the replacements. Standard Wireless Phone Protection (WPP) is now $5.18 per month and covers lost, stolen, or damaged (in any way) phones.
Phones come with a one year warranty which covers manufacturer defects. If your device is having issues like buttons not responding, constant freezing, resets, power issues, glitchy software, etc, we will go through troubleshooting steps to get this fixed. If not, you will get a Certified Like-New Replacement (CLNR). If we don't have any CLNRs available, you will likely get a new phone, or possibly an alternate-like device, these situations are rare and are taken on a case-by-case/phone-by-phone basis.
You can extend the warranty alone for $1.99 a month. This will cover your phone as long as it stays on your account, and as long as it's a warranty issue, of course.
You can get WPP and extended warranty, called Total Equipment Coverage (TEC) for $6.99 a month, so in this case the extended warranty part only adds on $1.81 a month. This will cover you with anything while it's still on your account.
I cannot comment on the claim limit through Asurion. They have their only policies they go by. From my understanding there is a claim limit within a certain time frame and if you reach it, they'll have to remove your coverage eventually. You'll be notified and of course have the monthly cost removed from your bill.
Deductibles just changed, so don't hold me to this but I believe feature phones (lol) are $45 to replace, and smartphones are $99 to replace. There's no additional cost for shipping, and if you get your claim finished before 12am on any day, you'll have it the next day. They're very fast.
While the deductibles went up $5-10 or so, the monthly cost decreased which I feel is better phone most as you likely won't need to use it, so you're spending less in the long run.
As for insurance on my account, it's only on my parents' lines.

The water thing on the thunderbolt is just on the battery though. Unless there is one hidden away inside or something, you could just get a new battery.
I did get the insurance, though I normally don't. Not sure why I did, but if I ever have any sort of problem, I'll be able to get another phone quickly which is nice.

Unless they have changed their policies recently I think oh are.wrong. my last phone got replaced after it got put in the washer.
I would highly recommend getting a rider policy from your insurance provider. I have a policy that covers my Canon DSLR my bicycle (don't laugh it is worth more than my car), and my phone. This coverage costs me only a few dollars per month and will not effect my homeowners premiums if I need to use it. It does have a $100 deductible, but it is well worth it. They will replace the phone at full retail cost.

So what is the advantage of getting WPP and the extended warranty?
Would pretty much anything that happens to your phone be covered under WPP?
Will the WPP or Extended Warranty cover activation of the new phone?
I'm of the mind that, if it's gonna break (under warranty), it's gonna break within the first few months, cause that's when you beat the hell out of the phone. So for me, especially, extended warranty is pretty much meh.
The insurance for lost / theft though might be actually worth it. I've never lost a phone... I've never dropped a phone... but if, I broke my phone, I'm sure I could lose it pretty damned fast.
For $125 for the length of my contract (monthly fees), plus the potential to replace my phone twice for total of $200, I think it's worth it. Out of pocket if I needed to replace this phone twice in contract would be $325. This thing retails for what, $600?
I'll be picking up the insurance tomorrow
Please correct me if this is the wrong way to look at this. Usually, I don't pick up insurance or extended warranties.

My bike is worth twice what my car is worth as well. I don't like the phone on home owners though, it shows as a claim and can cause a rate increase.
The insurance seems a little pricey but the first time you drop your phone in the toilet, or wash it in your pants (maybe your wife did it) or your dog eats it, or its in your lap and you get out of the car and it smashes into the pavement, destroying your beautiful screen, and you then you go into Verizon for a replacement, and they want 599.99 plus tax to replace it, you will think that the 5.15 per month (thats roughly 120$ over two years, plus a $99 deductible = 219) wasn't such a bad idea after all.
I mean the price of the insurance is what I would pay for one single drink at a bar on Friday night. I can handle that fee once per month for the peace of mind of knowing that if something bad happens to my expensive phone, I can replace it.
I insure all of my electronics that cost $500 or more.

Best Buy's Black Tie Insurance No longer has "3 Lemon" clause

Short story: Best Buy no longer allows "3 lemons = new phone". One of the best benefits of their insurance plan is gone...
Long story:
About 2 months ago. My girlfriend decided she wanted her latest Evo 4G (already a refurb from Best Buy.) turned in for another because of the screen separation issue that started to creep up slowly. We took it in under our Black Tie Insurance plan which, at that point, we loved. showed them the issue, got it shipped off. Few days later, got one in return. As soon as I saw the phone, I could tell this one was having the same issue I just returned the other phone for. I instantly told them that this one was going to do the same thing and wanted it returned, before even activating it. They said OK, shipped back again. (2 times now.) few days later, the other comes in. I check the screen...and **** you not, screen was doing the exact same thing. I had written down the previous serial just to make sure they weren't 'effing with me. nope, they didn't match. So, I show them, they are wishy washy about it but take it back and left huge notes in capital letters "SCREEN COMING UP, DO NOT SEND ONE LIKE THIS". So, we wait again. (3 phone.) Few days later, get the call. Go in, look at phone... and as SOON as she opens the box, without even taking off the protective film I could tell it was screwed up. Not only was the bottom left hand corner coming up, like all the others. The whole bottom half of the phone was coming off. I verbally digressed "Are you ****ting me?" showed them the phone and they instantly go "Oh wow." it was that bad. I ask about the new phone policy and how I've had to ship these out 3 times, this being the forth. They state "We don't get new evo's anymore" I go "That's fine, a phone of equal value will work. She says she wouldn't mind a Design 4G, looking over specs, I personally feel it comes out as less than equal value, but she's fine with it. They state they don't have the policy anymore and it was removed at the beginning of the year. I, rather upset, state I've been dealing with this crap since November and just because I missed 3 crappy refurbs before their cut off shouldn't mean I have to suffer. Her suggestion? try Sprint. yeah. it's past 1 year, so that's a laughable suggestion... also, given that I'm paying you for insurance!. I asked to speak to the manager who suggested the same thing!. try sprint or keeping spinning the roulette wheel for a decent refurb. My only real option was the roulette wheel. This time, the Manager left notes, put a ticker on the glass of the phone with a huge ARROW pointing to the bottom of the phone that read "DO NOT SEND ANOTHER LIKE THIS EVER." Then, on the paperwork, stated my many attempts, how disappointed he was and how this next one better be checked multiple times before being shipped.
So, we picked up her phone tonight... all "seems" OK so far, guess I get to wait and see if the screen starts coming up or not.
I love how they just want to have a green light to do a sloppy job and not get hit with the consequence of it.
I personally will never again buy their insurance, after one of my old phones ended spending 3 trips and 5 months in their repair center ...

Well if they aren't going to give you a brand new phone, just keep sending the broken ones back and keep trying. Eventually they will realize it's costing them more in shipping costs than it would to just give you a new phone. Maybe try going to another Best Buy as well.
And I know exactly what you are talking about. I made a claim with Asurion in December, and it took 4 refurb evo's, that were all bad, and then they finally gave me a new 3D. The first two had screen separation, with one of them the glass was actually completely separated, like I could take my finger and lift the entire glass off the phone. The other two both had a broken vibrator out of the box, and both of them had two of the four touch button lights that weren't lighting up at all. I really can't believe they actually ship these phones out to people like this without a simple look-over to find issues like this.
Oh, how I love Sprint's TEP. My phones get fixed or replaced, no questions asked.
Does the HTC warranty start over with the "new" device you received? I mean it's a new to you device replaced under a repair, so I was just curious?

Last year when Sprint finally gave me a new Evo after 5 bad refurbs, they told me the warranty would be 90 days OR the remainder of the 1 year from the original phone purchase date, whichever comes first.

I know at sprint sometimes is a game of chance on refurbished units back on the EVO days I had to swap my 2month old phone out due to blue spots in the screen they wouldn't fix it. Lol pain dealing with refurbished units sometimes you get lucky other times it is a gamble .
Lol I would rather keep my original phone and just repair it my self lol.
lol, im glad this post is here because i actually have some clarification and this applies to me.
so i dropped my 3vo in water the other day for a split second, and it dried out just fine. this was about 2 weeks ago. i wasnt having issues at all until yesterday. apparently the digitizer is screwed so being an employee at best buy, i knew i had coverage and i bought the BTP out right so i had plenty of replacements. i took it in, and my buddy took a look at it and he confirmed the screen was wonky. but then he said it was rooted, and that they dont accept that. so of course i went outside and smahed the phones screen to bits to where both the inner and outer layer of the screen were shattered and you couldnt see the screen at all.
anyways, what i am getting at...
if the phone has water damage, or any type of replacement issues they pretty much rip the phone out and the only thing brand new you get back is the shell of the phone and they replace whatever is messed up.
but if the phone screen is completely shattered it is a instant replacement with a new phone, which is good because it "shouldnt" be a refurb. this is a new policy that is actually inside info.

Wait, can you tell me some about TEP's current policies? I chose bestbuy but I'm probably going to switch when I get my new phone. Last time I called about TEP was 3 years ago, so...
-Does TEP still charge $100 for broken phones?
-Does TEP give new or refurbished phones?
-If refurbished, is it at the store or does it take 20 years to arrive?
-With TEP, do they replace it no questions asked?
I knew bestbuy's prices were jacked up like **** but now the insurance... really...
Thanks

As far as I know they only charge the fee if there is physical damage, water damage, or if it lost or stolen. If you take the phone to a corporate store with a repair center they will fix it for free and if it cannot be fixed then it is replaced with a refurbished phone. Personally I used to work for both companies and I think that TEP is much better than best buy's insurance policy.

Cracked screen with Insurance

So my wife dropped her Rezound and the screen cracked. We do have the insurance through Verizon and figured I'd check here before calling Verizon since I need to know how to play this and get a replacement. Will they replace my phone or will they only replace it if our phonse is lost or stolen? Does anyone know how much it costs to get a replacement.
Sent from my GT-P5113 using xda premium
With a cracked screen it will cost $99 to replace. If it was a defect with the phone it would of been free. Kinda sucks but its better then shelling out $200+ for a new phone cause of the insurance. This is from personal experience with my own rezound.
seems pretty lame since that's about what it would cost me without the insurance.

If the picture isn't distorted and your glass is simply cracked, just get a Rezound LCD Digitizer with tools from amazon or ebay and some 3M 2mm digitizer tape. It'll only cost you 30 bucks to repair your screen, and you can choose between getting a verizon branded or unbranded digitizer while you're at it.

ugh, i tried this..only do this if you know what you're doing...i sure as hell didn't, and there's NO repair how to video out there about how to re-assemble the screen..they all convieniently skip that part. i ddin't even know i had to buy new adhesive since nobody said anyhting about that...
in the end, i have a screen with smudges on the LCD from the adhesive i had to pick at, since it was clearly visible underneath the digitzer, and then of course there's dust all over the place because it's impossible NOT to get dust under there, and the ribbon cable is peaking through the top, and i'm sure there's gonna be screen lift at some point. oh, and my bezel is def warped and bent out on the left side from prying with that stupid safe pry tool to get the digitzer out....clearly it isn't so safe!
oh and not to mention that my menu button doesn't fully light up anymore like the rest of them, because apparently you hvae to get teh LED's on there JUST RIGHT for them to light correctly.
yeah it cost $30, but it was a gift to my brothers wife until she can upgrade in a year...sure, she doesn't notice any of that, and it's a huge upgrade from her fascinate, but my brother and i sure do. we both did it together, and if me, someone who tinkers with electronics all the time, and him, a mechanical engineer, can't get it perfect, i'd say to just get the insurance replacement lol i would have, def, especially if you're as picky as me.....
Me doing it myself is probably not going to happen.

Next question!
If I got a lemon, do I just deal with Assurian or can I get a replacement thru Verizon? On the screen when I got the phone it said 1 year Assurian warranty. Do I cancel my $7 a month insurance?
Thanks for the insight if anyone has experience beyond my point so far.

no i think you need to keep asurion to get it replaced warranty wise through asurion. and yeah, you call verizon, but asurion is who warranty replaces it
I wish I could find a way to get another S3 but if she dropped the Rezound, the S3 would have no chance of survival.

[Q] Cracked screen- 3/4 of it wont function

So my wife's brand new G was in the stroller today on a walk with the baby and when the stroller got closed up it fell out onto concrete from like 1-2 feet max. Go figure, the screen now has a giant crack diagonally across it and most of the screen no longer functions, and whats worse is it's the bottom part, making it un-usable. Arrgghhhh. Anyway, she literally just got it and hadn't gotten around to getting a case. We can still get the insurance but the deductible is $200 that we do not even come close to having.
My question is, does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone have any experience replacing the screen on this thing? I saw a tear down guide to open it up, but no idea on what to do with the screen. Anyone know of someone that replaces a screen and how much that would cost? Anyone have any other advice or a suggestion on what we can do to minimize cost as much as possible? I finally got her to switch from iphone land once hers broke, so im determined to try and make android work if at all possible.
Thanks in advance all, i appreciate any help or adivice.
Good luck, man. I'm not aware of any reasonably priced screens and digitizers. You'd have to replace them both because A) they're glued together and B) they're both broken. Hopefully a good ebay seller has popped up since the last time someone tried to replace their screen. If you live in or near a big enough city you can probably find a cellphone shop that can fix it for less than the insurance deductible, if they can get the parts.

Thanks for the responses guys. Looks like it would be around 165-180 to get the stupid thing fixed and 200 to get a new one. Thinking of getting a new one for the 200 and selling it as i think i could get 300-350 for it, then using the difference to get something else. ****ty, but that's life. Thanks again for taking the time to respond and offer suggestions.

I'd look into a square trade warranty, that's what I have and the same thing happened to mine. Its $99 for the insurance and the deductible is only $25. They'll either send you a new phone or pay for repair. They sent me a brand new one from amazon and I got 2 days after filing the claim.
Also when you make an insurance claim through AT&T they want the broken phone back
I checked out Square Trade this morning and it looks like the deductible is now 100 and you either have to do a two year deal at 7 per month or 125 for the two years, so it would end up being more expensive than just dealing with the ATT option, not factoring in the warranty over the two years.
@gunnyman- Wouldn't every warranty option make you give them the broken phone? Seems like if not, you would be able to just file fake claims as often as they permit them and repeatedly sell a new product for a gain.

Yes of course I was half asleep when I read what you wrote about selling a phone. I read it as selling the broken one.
I got a screen off ebay for 86.77 with free shipping, I was gonna put a link but I dont have enough posts here on xda but if you copy and paste the following in ebay it should be the first listing you see:
New ASSEMBLY LCD Display Screen+Touch Screen Digitizer For LG Optimus G E970
It did take a couple of weeks to get to me being it's from china. I must say that I was pleasantly suprised with the quality of the screen  (at least the one I got) with the added bonus of it not having the lg logo. The guy that did the teardown post said it looked hard to take of the screen but it's actually not, just pop off the two ribbon connectors (one is for the digitizer, the other is for the LCD) then you just have to do some prying on the screen since its glued on, and once you get it off you pull the two connector through this slot that they have to pass through. Once you get it out you'll see how easy it is to put the new one on. And instead of glue I just used two sided tape around the edges of the screen. Been using it for two weeks with no problems. Hope this helps.
*EDIT* Forgot a step, you should heat up the broken screen with a blow dryer or heat gun to soften the glue before prying it off, It shouldn't be so hot that it's hard to handle though.

Got a random code off google and it was $95 for 2 years with a $99 deductible ($194 total for 1 claim over 2 years).
Better than att $7/mo plus $199 per claim ($369 total for 1 claim over 2 years)

Cracked Camera Lens Cover

I'm not sure if this is the best place for this thread, so if anyone has a better idea, please let me know, I will move it.
I recently pre-ordered the LG G5 (H820 Gold) from AT&T, it arrived last Wed, and unfortunately my case won't arrive until two days from now. I accidentally dropped it on the ground when getting out of my car, and now the glass covering the camera lens is cracked. It doesn't seem to affect the camera functioning, because it looks like it is outside the field of view on the camera. However, I am sad that it is broke. I was wondering if anyone knows a place that could repair it, or how much it would cost?
I found out it is not covered by AT&T's warranty, or LG's warranty. I'm emailing LG support to see how much they would charge to replace directly, but I'm not above going third party repair if it is cheaper and still reputable. I realize the phone has been out a total of 4 days now, but I actually broke it a day before that.
Totally sucks man. Best advice is to slap a cover on it and be as careful as you can with it since the cracks might get worse. and actually affect the camera quality. That or call LG for an estimate on repairs.
I'd get a warranty with squaretrade and then file a claim to get it fixed if a repair shop charges you more than $80.
Thanks for the info.
BTW, for anyone wondering, LG is going to make me MAIL my phone in, wait 6-8 weeks, then they will tell me what the estimate is to repair it... then I can decide if I want them to fix it, then regardless if they fix it, I wait another 6-8 weeks to get my phone back... This is stupid.
Anyway, my phone carrier does the same thing, except that its a $200 deductible, along with $8 a month for 2 years. Then I have to mail it in, and wait for them to fix it and send it back.
I'll probably check out squaretrade, that almost seems the best answer, but I'd still have to find my own repair shop locally.
They probably barely have their G5 repair parts program going yet. It's likely weeks to get any repair done, even a screen. I've been trying to buy a spare battery and charger because I don't want to wait for my freebies and even those are not available yet.
This is why its key to ha e a backup phone. 6-8 weeks is only because its new i'm guessing. But yeah its so new and they dont physically inspect before letting you sign up for insurance right? So check fine print. If they dont have "pre existing condition" type restrictions it might not be unethical to sign up

I don't have a problem signing up, my problem is with the fact that even with "Insurance" or "Warranty" I still have to actually pay them to fix it... and I have to wait FAR longer than I should, just for them to give me an estimate, I mean, do they really not know how much a camera cover costs?? do they have to look at it for 6 weeks just to know that it needs a new piece of glass??
On top of ALL that, I'm less than 20 miles from their repair facility, and yet I still have to mail it, I can't just drive it up there, which would take less than an hour of driving.
I'd rather just have a cracked camera than be without my phone for nearly half a year, and then have to pay nearly half the phone's price just for a 1 inch piece of glass.
Yeah that super annoying man.

Just wait until repair shops have access to the parts and get it fixed for 40-50 bucks

Hey OP, wondering if you found a replacement for that yet? I just got the LG G5 and on day 15 set the phone on a desk and the glass cracked back there. I'm looking everywhere trying to find a replacement and coming up short. I really don't want to pay $175 to file a warranty claim. Thanks!
Sorry bud, I haven't been able to find one... Only options were to mail it to LG and wait, or submit claim with my carrier...
Same boat here. I've never ever broken that glass on a phone. I picked up my phone today to see that it was shattered. Mind you, my phone has always been in a case. Seems they're using too thin of glass for this part.

The same exact thing happened to me. Pissed me off. My brand new phone looks like a pos now... 175 to use my insurance to fix it...
Same issue here, had it in a case since day one, just pulled my phone out and noticed that the glass covering the camera is busted, really disappointing never dropped my phone, or had it in a pocket with anything else.
LEMON LAW?????
Same crap here! WORST quality control phone I've ever had! I miss my Note 3.
Question is...HOW MANY FLAWS DO THERE HAVE TO BE TO FILE A LEMON LAW LAWSUIT or take action!? First, the phone's screen was wobbly and wouldn't hold a hard screen protector, then the headphone jack issue, then the freezing...then the black screen issue...and now this camera lens issue!? If they used a bit thicker glass, it'd not have happened! My phone's ALWAYS been in a case. Never have I had a screen break, let alone, a camera lens!!!
I am literally a cripple in a wheelchair who never leaves home. I took my phone off my desk to see my child and the wide angle lens was all wonky.. .I turned it over:
I have an image but it thinks I'm a spam bot... So just go to my web server: sirgcal.com/misc/LG/20160509_170035.jpg
I also have a question into LG on this one. Perhaps if they get enough of them it'll get recalled? If not I'm waiting till the local phone repair place can do it. I don't go anywhere so for me to drive out is almost impossible and for me to be without a phone more-so. I could re-use my old Galaxy S4 for a while if I had to, per-say. That would all be up to sprint.

This is also why I don't do insurance. The repair itself wouldn't cost that much when shops get the parts. Going to take a while for 'new' phones. But... Unless you completely damage/lose your phone very early on, it's just not cost effective to me.

YEAH!!! How about a recall on these main issues!? Screen defects and definitely this crappy lens on the camera! It's a huge deal for me, as it's over the main camera...and my beautiful phone now looks like dog crap!

I also had the phone for 4 days until it hit the toilet
Add me to the list. I have it in a huge soft hard combo case and noticed last night the camera glass was broken. I think its a combo of too thin glass and too tight of a fit so when it drops even with a case, it shatters.
Between this and the non rooting since LG removed fastboot cmd, I might just jump to the m10
sent from my unrooted g5 cause T-Mobile and lg are jerks
I had a note 4 for two years and not a single issue. Just the other day I noticed the glass was cracked on my G5. I am furious. Can't find a replacement part yet. Please keep this thread going for when we have the ability to get these parts.
