[Help] Updating Cyanogenmod 11, to 12 or higher on my Kindle HDX 8.9 3rd gen - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I recently rooted and installed cyanogenmod with TWRP on my Kindle fire hx 8.9 (3rd gen) , and i've noticed with Cyanogenmod 11, there's a major battery drain, and i can't seem to find any solutions on it, so i thought maybe i should just update to a more stable build, can anyone point me in the right direction, or possibly help me out regarding updating from 11 to a higher version, thanks in advance, if i've missed anything out, let me know
I used this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62741307&postcount=2

If you used the linked guide, you DO NOT have TWRP, but Safestrap v4, so you can use CM11 or Nexus for Safestrap v4 only. You need the REAL TWRP and an unlocked bootloader (you probably don't have that either?) in order to use CM12/CM13!
It is recommended to use the stock slot, because there're certain issues (incl. battery) when using secondary slots. Note: you MUST NOT restore a backup of a secondary slot to the stock slot! This would overwrite Safestrap files and brick the device!
Create a backup of your stock slot, and the secondary slot (always remember to NOT restore any secondary slot backups to the stock slot!), remove the secondary slot, then install CM11 to the stock slot. Make sure you understand the risks of using the stock slot before you flash anything to it!

Clearly didn't spend much time searching as this issue is discussed in multiple threads and dozens of posts. As noted by @Cl4ncy custom roms must be installed to the stock slot in Safestrap v4. Battery drain is just one of many issues associated with secondary slots.

[Q] Phone rebooting after fflashing a rom on slot2

Hello
I have a RAZR XT910.
Well, i tried flashing this rom today:
[ROM][RazrCDMA/GSM][4.1.2][2-4] Jellywiz RLS5 -- Redefining Performance and Stability
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133763&page=4
Followed all steps, installed SafeStrap, etc...
but now, i got two issues:
1) My phone signal is being unstable a lot. I applied GSM's patches, but it dididn't helped much.
2) With this rom, installed on rom slot 2 , my phone reboots every 10 minutes . Yeap, 10 minutes and it reboots...
On my stock slot, i have Verizon JB leak installed and fully-working, But i really would like to give a chance to this rom , and some others i've saw around XDA.
What should i do in that case, since i followed all the steps ?
Thanks in advance.
The reboots can be caused by the ROM itself, or the slot being corrupted. Try erasing and re creating the slot.
The signal issues may be related to radio; are you using JB radio? If so, you may need to change it back to any ICS one...
im gonna try it right now
instead of erasing the slot ill create a new one
thx in advance

Mm I'm not sure, but most ROMs require to use only slot2
You can also try BMM, for me it's better than Safestrap.

I had BMM before.
I was having some trouble with it, then i removed. I find safestrap better/easier to do stuff.
Oh well, the problem continues. Rom still rebooting.
And now, after i applied the gsm patch specified to this rom, i can't use it anymore.
Everytime a process ".com.android.phone"(something like that) crashes.
I'll try again to wipe rom slot 2, clean all cache's / data, and reinstall it.
the verizon leak (official) works without problems on stock slot.

[Q] How can I flash Cyaogenmod without having those crazy radio issues?

I'm sure people were getting pretty tired of hearing about the radio issues when people flashed cyanogenmod (ie, LTE worked, but no SMS, MMS, or voice calls, odin didn't fix, the only solution was to factory restore from WITHIN a TW ROM). After waiting a while for things to calm down, I'm ready to try to install Cyanogenmod again but I am naturally hesitant.
Has this issued resolved itself? I'm running rooted and unlocked MC3 with CWM installed. I heard somewhere that flashing the MJ9 radio BEFORE Cyanogenmod 10.2 / 11 fixed the problem?
I would really appreciate any input or personal experience here!
As far as I know, the issue has not resolved itself. I tried flashing the newest CM 11 a couple of days ago (I think it was the nightly build on the 22nd), and I still had the funky radio issues. However, I tried this, and it fixed all the radio issues with CM 11 (and any other Android 4.4 ROMS - I'm running Slim ROM at the moment)... Here is my post from another thread.
Hey all, I got it working (the data/network connection that is), with a little effort. Here is what I did in sequence...
1) Reflash the ORIGINAL VRALJB image via ODIN. I used the one found here. You want to make sure you get the one that replaces EVERYTHING, i.e., NOT the alternative restore.
2) I set up my phone and used it normally for about four hours. (This may or may not be necessary, I'm not entirely sure. I also rebooted the phone about five times during that time frame.)
3) I unlocked and rooted the phone via the method outlined here. After that was done, I installed CWM 6.0.4.3 via TWRP (which the unlocking process installs).
4) I then installed CM 11 and the respective Google apps. (I first did a backup, then a factory reset, then cache wipe, then dalvik wipe. The next thing I did was install CM 11, then Gapps.)
5) Restart the phone and success!

The reason why I found out that this method would work, is that I tried installing CM 11 on my dad's phone. He has had a TW ROM (Beans build to be exact) since the phone came out. And he has been running the stock VRALJB radio. With that said, I figured I would try flashing the stock ODIN files to restore my phone back to the VRALJB. (I think I was running the MJ9 prior to this) That worked, and the SlimROM has been working perfectly ever since!
[Also, if you wanted to check out SlimROM, you can find a link to it here.]
Still looking for some more feedback from users! Anyone successfully flashed CM 10.2 / CM 11 from MC3 without problems / fixed the problems?

Rooting fnk1
So this might be a silly question but after upgrading to 4.4.2 via samsung kies, I can't find a root method that will work for VRUFNK1.... I tried towelroot but it doesn't support my device. If I want to try this rom out how do I go about rooting my S4 VZW?
question for wtfchuck about empty vzw galaxy
after you did the Alternative Custom ROM Method: to update to NK1 and flash ss, super su etc, did you immediately flash the custom rom or did you let the system boot and reboot into safestrap and then flash empty galaxy?
thanks

Nevermind. I allowed the phone to reboot and i got a bunch of "Backup Assistant Has Stopped" errors. Apparently my data backup had something in there that was causing this error.
I went back to safestrap, wiped, flashed empty galaxy, flashed modules and booted into empty galaxy with no issues. apps are installing as we speak.

rotate_on_home
I couldn't get rotate_on_home.zip to work. I flashed it in safestrap.
Any tricks/tips/setup info for this?

** [ROM] Empty [VZW] Galaxy v3.92 [I545VRUFNK1] 1/2** system cannot be backed up
System cannot be backed up via Safestrap after installing empty galaxy v3.92. Safestrap always says "backup complete failed" (in red letters). Did full update to I545VRUFNK1 via directions on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/how-to-root-i545vrufnk1-4-4-2-12-1-2014-t2959613. Tried both methods, odin only method and safestrap method. Both worked ok and I am able to back up system via safestrap from here. However as soon as I install empty galaxy v3.92, whether doing a factory reset (via normal recovery or safestrap) or advanced wipe via safestrap or no wipe at all I lose abiltiy to backup system. Tried both Safestrap-JFLTE-3.72-kk-B01 and Safestrap-I545-3.75-KitKat-A03.
I spent hours trying to solve this and got nowhere. I can back up system on stock I545VRUFNK1 no problem but as soon as I install empty galaxy v3.92 via any type of wipe or no wipe at all I can no longer backup system. I can confirm I am on baseband I545VRUFNK1, Android Version 4.4.2 and using I545_NK1_Modules. I have tried every option under the sun seems the problem lies with empty galaxy v3.92.
** [ROM] Empty [VZW] Galaxy v3.92 [I545VRUFNK1] 1/2** system cannot be backed up
Fixed??!!
Went for a ride into the city this afternoon, listened to some Bluetooth music, changed theme in supersu, set correct time zone in safestrap
No major changes made
Decided to give it another go after like 8 hours of trying to solve this yesterday. System (and data) backs up ok now.
From what I have read in the General section for this device, you need to do the temporary kernel downgrade method to root NK1 with towelroot. ..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Free mobile app
Yeah I did just that. Used I545VRUFNK1_I545VZWFNK1_I545VRUFNK1_HOME.tar via odin to upgrade to NK1 (came from CarHD 32.1S v2 NG6-NCx STOCK so unable to get OTA update). Once I update to NK1 use odin to flash I545_NC5_Stock_Kernel, run towelroot, then use odin to flash I545_NK1_Stock_Kernel. Then install supersu.
Honestly I don't know how I fixed it. My best guess is somehow having the wrong time zone in safestrap somehow caused a problem backing up system. All I know is now I can back up system ok (data too).
Thanks for the help anyway...still worth giving a thumbs up!
phone issue when connecting bluetooth during call
i have an issue that ive found. when i accept a call and then connect my bluetooth headset, com.android.phone crashes and i cant hear anything in my bluetooth headset. i can still talk on the phone and sometimes it switches to speaker. i cant hang up either even if i click phone again.
i managed to recreate it and recorded a logcat with catlog but i dont really know what everything is doing in there or if i caused it with an app conflict.
normally i have my bluetooth headset connected first and then make a call and thats fine. i just switched to this rom last friday or saturday and i dont think i connected the headset during a call since then.
thanks.
I am a bit confused over what is the purpose of the empty galaxy rom. Does it actually free up any space on the internal storage? My S4 seems to have about as much free space as running a full stock rom. What are the actual advantages of running the empty galaxy rom versus a full stock rom?
I love the work on this rom and enjoy running it. I am just curious as to why my S4 only has 6.5 gb free on the internal storage when I barely have any apps installed.

The current size of this rom is less than 1 gig. Current stock 4.4.2 is approx 2.6 gig so there is 1.5 gig saved... UNLESS...you are keeping stock rom in Stock slot and employing slot-1 for custom rom which means you have approx 3.5 gig in just rom. I run EVG in Stock slot leaving other slots empty and have 101 USER apps on phone w/ 6.5 gig left on internal SD.
Nk1 modules
Where can I download Nk1 modules?
thank you
I just wanted to thank you for this rom. It works great, and is the only one I've had zero problems installing. Are you going to be developing one for the lollipop update once it's released? Perhaps one that can be installed with safestrap so that we don't have to do the ota update and lose root access?
Problems with GPS and Keyboard.
Hi I'm still new to flashing roms and such. But I have a Verizon S4 with a FRESH INSTALL of NK1 Towel rooted with Safestrap v3.75, I've attempted to install your rom to my phone and it goes through fine. I have flashed the NK1 Modules. However my GPS is locked on PowerSaving, I can not switch to accurate. Also when I attempt to switch to SwiftType (Keyboard) it prompts me that it may collect data, I ok that and it goes back to Samsung Keyboard. How can I override these? I am having issues with "EGR_TWUI_321". Thanks for your help. If you need more information let me know what you need and I'll try to reply promptly.
So just out of curiosity I wiped my system and started over from a base NK1 then I went through the steps of rooting and Safestrap, but I installed the 3-4-15 version this time. And the above issues are not present. However I really dislike this one when compared to the newest one when it comes to theme and customizing. It's also not as bloat free as the other one. I still have Amazon music and NFL and even VZTones.... Any idea why the newest one is breaking the GPS and the Keyboard? I really want to run that one again =(

It sounds like you either done a dirty flash or your system didn't get wiped properly.
That or those apps are being restored from the Play Store. I could be wrong but I don't believe any of those apps are even in the rom.
Maybe a factory reset (full wipe) and a clean install would solve your issues.

Thanks I'll try starting over from base and seeing what happens and I'll update you. Towel is the app used to root the NK1 firmware, safestrap is the app that we who are stuck on Verizon with a locked bootloader have to use to flash roms. SwiftKey is a keyboard app from the play store. Or where you talking about my second flash with the 3-14-15?

Gotcha. I thought it was weird too still have them too. I just reinstalled the newest version this morning. Everything seems to be working now. Not sure what happened since it was the only Rom I installed.

Time for an upgrade? But which one?

My CM 10.2.1 has become increasingly temperamental until finally it always boots to a black screen (just backlight) unless I restore the last backup from my CWM SD card. I'm guessing the boot image has frayed a little around the edges and since I didn't keep a "brand new" backup from the original flashing, the only backups I have are probably a little wonky.
So it's been a little over a year since my original installation following digixmax's excellent directions. I've been thinking of just starting fresh with 10.2.1 and rebuilding my apps so here's a couple of questions:
1. Do I have to go all the way back to Stock 1.43 to follow these same directions? I had my NT repartitioned at B&N before I flashed CM, if that makes any difference.
2. Do I need to root before I flash CM (been too long and I just don't recall)?
3. After a fresh CM flash, would it be wise to use my last backup and Advanced restore so I can skip boot and (maybe) system--or should I just man-up and rebuild my apps from scratch?
OR....since I'm going to go through all of this, should I just flash CM 11 or 12 and get a newer system in the bargain? Reading about updating from CM 10.x to CM 11 has me a little spooked because I haven't been able to track down a definitive statement on whether the partitions have been combined or what that might mean for me.
Does anyone have a favorite 11.x or 12.x build? It looks like the M4 nightly for CM 11 was pretty well-behaved, but there are just so many choices.... I've been more or less happy with 10.2.1 (except for the now almost constant boot issue and lockscreen non-function), but I also know that app updates will eventually pass me by if I stay on 10.2.1.
I'd appreciate any help
Been using 12 for the past few months, no issues.

The "boot to black screen" is a known bug in CM10.x (you find some brief discussions of this issue in the old CM10.x development thread.
You don't need to go back to stock to upgrade from CM10 to CM11 or CM12. The general process for performing the upgrade is outlined at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2670589. (For CM12.x, you'll need to locate a compatible recovery (to use in step 1(a)) which is typically referenced/linked in the first post of the corresponding CM12.x development thread).
If you're considering CM11 builds, I'd suggest you select a build that is sufficiently recent to have incorporated fixes for the Stage Fright security vulnerability (see http://www.cyanogenmod.org/blog/more-stagefright).

Unless you plan on using the uSD card also to backup your current ROM and setup for ease in rolling back (which is a good idea), you don't need an external uSD card to upgrade from CM10 to CM11/12.

[HELP!] CM 11 to CM 13

I have a rooted HDX 7" 3rd gen that I have been running CM 11 on using Safestrap, and I would like to try and get a different rom running on it. I did a factory reset back to FireOS 4.5.2. I'd really love to get CM 13 running, but I'm not sure how to do it or if it's even an option at this point. I am trying to make sense of my different options but I'm pretty confused at this point. Am I stuck with CM 11 for now or is this even possible? If not is CM 12 or Nexus a possibility? Thanks!
You can NOT use CM13 and CM12 with Safestrap v4! Both require an unlocked bootloader, you can NOT downgrade below 3.2.8 due to rollback protection by Amazon (attempt would brick the device), thus you can't unlock the bootloader.
You can use CM11 or Nexus for Safestrap v4 only.

Pretty amazing your device survived the factory reset. In most cases that yields an instant brick when Safestrap v4 recovery is installed/active. Did you have CM 11 installed in the stock slot or a secondary slot (eg: slot 1)?

That's not the recommended configuration and likely contributed to a sub-optimal experience. Issues:
- only 2 of the 4 processor cores can be used (poor performance under load)
- those two core run at 100% all the time (poor battery life)
- device never deep sleeps (variety of issues including thermal)
- wifi radio is slow to engage during power transitions
- limited user space for apps/data
- instant brick if a slot backup is restored to the stock slot or vice versa
Custom ROMs should always be installed in the stock slot (overwriting FireOS) with Safestrap v4 which is exclusive to HDX 3rd gen devices. A safestrap compatible version of FireOS can be flashed if needed allowing the device to return to stock. Secondary slots should not be created/used.

Good to know! There wasn't anything I saw during my research about this when I first set it up with CM 11.
Also, does anyone know of a way to get Wii Remotes to work with either CM 11 or Nexus. I know they don't seem to work with Android 4.2 and higher and since both CM 11 and Nexus are running higher versions am I out of luck?
