LG Sell Phones Unlocked (Like Moto)? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hey all. Does LG sell their phones unlocked? I was a Nexus 5 guy and moved to a Samsung Galaxy S6. That was a poor choice. A family member picked up the V10 and liked it, and from what I saw it was pretty cool. I am thinking about grabbing a G5 if they are sold unlocked. I am on AT&T, but having the flexibility to switch carriers and get OTA's from the manufacturer, would be nice.
Any info is appreciated.
EDIT: for poor grammar

Most phones have an international unlocked version, but they tend to be missing one or two key bands for T-Mobile or AT&T. We can hope the G5 will change that.

My brother had a N5 and I had a galaxy s6 which was alright. Besides the touchwiz issues, it's been a great phone. I am currently on Tmobile and might switch to verizon but they haven't been very convincing. From past pxeriences I know that switching carriers can be a pain but once the device is registered on the current carrier it works fine. goodluck!

Thanks all. My wife bought me a Nexus 6p for my birthday. It seems to work great. I will probably sell off the Samsung S6 Edge via eBay or some other service.

[Q] Should i get this phone?!

Im thinking of up grading to the Vibrant. Any reason not to? Is there a better phone on the horizen? Im currently with T-mobile and dont want to switch. Thanks in advance!!
Only other choice is the T-Mobile G2 (Oct 6.) or myTouch HD (rumored to release November '10?). I've gotten the Vibrant since week one and don't regret getting it. The Super AMOLED screen is definitely beautiful and one of the things admired most from this phone.
get it
best screen. like a hdtv in your pocket
t-mobile has great 3g speeds
hummingbird > snapdragon
released in 100+ countries, including every major carrier in the US so community support should be huge
there's always better phones on the horizon, but this is the phone i've been waiting for ever since the iphone was announced years ago. and it hasn't disappointed
no it sucks. *at the airport, using vibrant to tether 3g to laptop*
G2 is very appealing and I am considering switching... it comes down to physical keyboard and stock android VS bigger and much better screen, slightly better hardware..

while i understand this viewpoint, touchwhiz is easily disabled. there is also no guarantee that the G2 will get the same OTA updates as the N1 simply because it is stock android. the original droid on verizon is a good example.
but yeah, if you need/want a hardware keyboard the G2 is a better choice (obviously). unless you can deal with sprint and the epic
I got two. My wife approved.
My 3rd android phone (just from passion of the OS), this is by far my most favorite of them. Speed, Design, Display... love everything about it.
Touchwiz is actually very usable from personal experience and reviews. It added alot of 'shortcuts' that makes life alot easier. For example, swipe notification bar to change brightness while outdoor, instead of going through 3-4 menus. Overall, Vibrant is a very solid phone at stock, definitely recommend it.
Only issues now are the GPS and Froyo, mostly Froyo.
+Amazing looking screen, ignore the iPhone 4 people and their color fidelity nonsense, the Vibrant is more colorful that the iPhone 4 and looks a lot better when viewing pictures and movies.
+Runs very fast, 1ghz processor.
+Very thin and light compared to the iPhone 4 (especially now that everyone has put a case on theirs), the back is plastic not glass, but I like saving the weight and I think the patterned back looks fine, comes with 2 colored backplates in the package I got.
+Android, with an open market, unlike At&t's flavor, the Captivate.
+Currently the best T-mobile phone available if you need to get a new one right now.
+Shoots 720p at 30fps. Big selling point, my friend bought a flip video and my phone takes the exact same quality of video and I don't have to carry an additional device, the camera is 5mp and also quite good.
Some downsides
-T-mobile took out some features from the stock Galaxy S, including fm radio, front facing camera and flash. I don't really need a front facing camera or a flash, the night mode works very well and renders a flash almost useless. Fm radio would be nice but I can live without it, I just loaded up my own music.
-Bloatware, it comes with a slew of crappy apps that you cannot remove without rooting. I would strongly recommend rooting, deleting bloatware, and then unrooting (The sales rep. at T-mobile actually recomended this ) It's about as safe as it can get and very easy, 1 click root and unroot, just look for it on xda. Also expect this on other T-mobile phones, except maybe the G2.
If you can wait a little just to see what's planned for the winter you might consider it, but I doubt you will be that disappointed if you buy the vibrant now. T-mobile has had a sad list of Android phones besides the Nexus One, so I doubt there's anything better than the myTouch or G2 coming out.

What's the point coming here and trolling? If you dont like their products then don't look here. And as far as the downside. It's not t-mobile its all us carriers so don't call out t-mobile.

So you're upset that T-Mobile isn't getting the Samsung Galaxy S Tab? What makes you think that it is 100% on Samsungs part?
This is the SAMSUNG VIBRANT forum, I honestly don't care too much about a tablet because I'll never use it. I just find the tablet and the Vibrant to be irrelevant. If anything.. why would you would a contracted tablet? If anything I would want a WiFi only version and just tether with my phone.
Samsung has been moving away from cutting exclusive deals with wireless operators for its growing slate of mobile devices. It launched its most recent smartphone, the Galaxy, with the top four U.S. wireless operators, Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile USA. T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG and the fourth-largest U.S. wireless carrier, hasn't yet worked out a deal to carry the tablet, a person familiar with the matter said.

Nothing about that article says the Galaxy Note is coming to AT&T.
In fact if you look at the model number, it's clear that the version that just went through FCC approval will never be sold by AT&T. Usable on AT&T - yes. Actually sold by AT&T - no.
AT&T phones have a model designator starting with SGH. SGH-I897 (Captivate), SGH-I997 (Infuse), SGH-I777 (AT&T GSII)
International generic units have a model designator starting with GT. The unit in that article is GT-I9220. So it's an international model that, while it will work on AT&T's network, will NEVER be sold by them in a contract-subsidized fashion. AT&T has NEVER sold a GT model on contract in the United states. If history is any indicator, if the Galaxy Note is ever sold by AT&T, it's going to be about a six month latency before the AT&T version drops. (See, for example, the delay between the GT-I9100 and the SGH-I777)

How would one obtain an international version for T-Mo then? Or is it a possibility that they will pick it up?
If it's like the I9100, an International variant supporting the T-Mobile bands won't exist. T-Mobile may or may not sell their own variant.
The heavy customization of the T-Mobile GS2 is a sign that you likely won't see the Note sold on contract with TMo or even any compatible with their 3G bands.
I'm happy with my Streak...even if it is still running 2.2.2, but, I'm looking at the Note also. If it gets to at&t before summer of 2012, I'll grab it.
Is it going to have a notifications led light?

yah i was loving the streak too (esp with steve's excellent builds). but i sold that for the s2, and i really miss the big screen. for me, the sgs2 feels like a downgrade hahahaha. ill be getting the note when it comes out full price. might have to sell the s2 to help pay for it
Really want to lug around a 5.3 inch screen for a daily device? Your back pockets won't forgive you. 4.5 is the largest that is comfy I think...

I've carried the 5" streak in a velcro closing belt loop case for over a year w/o any problems. The Note, with the 5.3" screen has less top & bottom than the streak does, so it won't be all that different

TOO Big for my taste. and too small to be a "pad"... not sure where this falls in to .. I'll be keeping my SGS2... only thing I WOULD change to is the Prime
I think the Note would be great for me, especially at work where carring even a 7" pad would be restrictive. I would use the stylus to write my notes all day long at work.

I've had the streak in my pocket every day since December 26 2010. Not an issue at all, if it is then you haven't owned one or have a very small figure or wear skinny jeans. I can't wait for the Note to come out, it will be in my pockets daily as my personal phone, along with my Atrix work phone. And BTW, the Streak is more often in my front pocket than back.
I've had the S2 since Friday and I love it. However, I have had my eye on the Note since I heard about it last month. Looks like a lucky family member will be getting my S2 once the Note come out If I don't like the Note then I'll take my S2 back, I can because I'm indian.

[Q] Using an Unlocked Galaxy S III here and in Korea?

Hey XDA,
I rarely post on here, because I am usually pretty good and finding everything I need to know without posting. But I cannot find an answer to this question.
My wife and I are moving to South Korea as ESL teachers in 3 months. But both of our current Verizon Android phones are on their last leg.
Obviously, we do not want to sign another 2 year agreement with them. So I was looking into getting us unlocked Galaxy S III's that we can use for the next few months here and then activate when we get over there.
Korea uses HSPA+ and LTE (SK Telecom).
This is what I am looking at: Factory Unlocked GSIII
By all accounts this should work, correct? If anyone knows, I would be super grateful.
Thanks all the same. And if I missed a thread talking about this, please just point that out to me.

From the info I have seen floating around the web, it seems South Korea will get it's own variant of the Galaxy S3. It'll be similar to one coming to the states. It'll have 2GB RAM, LTE, although it will be quad-core like the international model (US model is dual-core). You can Google "Galaxy S3 in South Korea" and you can find this info. I'm not sure if this will work over there but I suggest you get the Korean S3 when it is released over there. It will have the best of the US version and the International version.
wire eemobas
Both Korea and Japan use CDMA technology similar to Verizon and Sprint - the model you're currently looking at appears to use GSM technology, so it probably won't have very good data coverage. (I'm not sure if a CDMA version is available yet - readers: correct me if I'm wrong here.)
If you're planning to be in Korea for a while, I would definitely recommend waiting and purchasing the local version of the SIII when it's released and getting a cheap phone in the interim.
Depending on what your commute is like, you may also want to consider the Note. When you're spending 2-3 hours/day on the train, the bigger screen comes in handy, and with a pair of mic headphones, you won't look like an idiot holding it up to your face to take a call.
Best of luck with your new assignment - Korea is a terrific place to live, and ESL jobs there should be a great way to pad your savings.
Thank you both for the replies. I guess it would be best just to hold off until we are there and settled in. I have Android tablets and I like the Note, but already a little old for my tastes.
I am just super bummed out I have to lose my Unlimited plan from Verizon after we move... oh well...

Help Me Decide Which S6 Edge Phone for Son

Hi guys. I've been out of the android game a little bit so I'm lost and my son is wanting a Galaxy S6 Edge.
His mom(doesn't stay with us) said she was going to get him one for his birthday, well that looks like it may not happen now
so I think I'll bite the bullet and buy one for him. Good kid, good grades, stays out of trouble.
I'm on AT&T in the US and trying to figure out which variant I should get.
Should I just bite the bullet and go the AT&T store route using Next or I should I buy an international version and be ok?
Would he miss out on anything like Visual Voicemail going with an International version? There will be no rooting or any other flashing done to the phone.
I see G925F, G920F and G925I on ebay and Amazon in the $600 no tax and free shipping range vs $720 + tax at AT&T
Which one would you guys recommend and if I should go ebay, amazon or at&t?
I thought about getting the international and throwing it on a new no interest card for 12-15 months and going that route vs ATT Next. Seems like I would save about $200 although going to the store I could pick it up and make sure it doesn't have bad pixels before walking out the door. I need to run the numbers
Thanks

Yeah that's my fear with ebay and some of the Amazon comments have been questionable. I'd put it on a credit card so I'd have some protection there but would hate having to jump through hoops.
does it have to be the edge? but yeah, I would recommend an unlock international version either way especially if you're currently with a GSM provider. I just recently ordered my gf the unlocked international S6 duos from B&H. luckily the colour she wanted happened to be the one that's currently selling for less at the moment.
LTE is working for both my Note 5 duos SIMs which seemed to be a concern for some people about the duos version.

Yeah he wants the Edge so that's what I'll get, good kid, makes the grades, doesn't ask for a lot. My older 19yo son that's on my plan bought the non Edge S6 out right but he has a job and saves and buys what he wants so you gotta love that.

well, anything 920 is out, because that's the S6 body.
go to B&H and check the specifications for the supported bands. they do have an unlocked G925A specifically for ATT. B&H is the biz - I get a ton of camera gear from there (and Adorama). return policy is awesome. one week full money-back if purchased in-store. 30 days if shipped to your home. of course, shipping is on you.

well, you're guaranteed everything works. ATT bootloader is locked, if you care about rooting. you'll get all the ATT bloatware. i'm not sure if the ATT handsets have their branding on it. there may be some difference in bands support (if you plan on traveling abroad with your phone and using it). but if the phone is just going to remain under ATT's network, domestically, I don't think getting one from them can be a bad idea.
as for vvm and mms, I couldn't even tell you. I personally don't use either.

FWIW, My AT&T S6 edge has some Samsung software/settings removed that some people have said are good (ie, the download booster). I found this thread since I'm getting ready to exchange my AT&T locked s6edge for an unlocked one.
Also, are you sure your son won't want to root his phone? I had my phone for 4 days before realizing I'd really like to root my phone.
Also, my research (on the B&H site) shows that the AT&T specific version has fewer bands (LTE especially) for when travelling abroad.
The reason to go AT&T imo is their lay-away plan, but if you are buying outright I don't see the win. (But I haven't done the alternative yet).
---------- Post added at 12:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:30 PM ----------
One clarification I noticed... the 925F has all the bands of the 925A (AT&T phone) and then some. The 925I is missing 4g-lte band "20" that the AT&T phone has, according to B&H specs. So I'd avoid the 925i for AT&T in the states.

He just turned 13 so he won't be rooting. If he wants to buy a phone himself then he can do whatever he wants to it. Not taking the chance of it bricking.
Neither of us will be traveling abroad. If I was buying for me the International would be a no brainer but since I'm getting it for him. I want to make sure there won't be quirks on AT&T
I read a thread on this forum where some people said they weren't getting full LTE speeds on the international versions on AT&T. I'm still researching. Wonder if it's the modem software. Thanks for the heads up about the 925i. I over looked that.
His mom was supposed to get him the phone for his 13th birthday but now says it'll be two weeks. If she doesn't come through. I'm going to bite the bullet and get it for him. I have custody so maybe it would be best if I just got the phone and have him on my plan so I can monitor it if need be.
B&H has an AT&T branded but it's the wrong color. Still not sure why he wants the gold.

HAHA You're right.
I mean it doesn't look bad really.
I like the White Platinum though
I agree - the gold is really something else. till you actually get it in hand, you don't realise just how sexy it really is. I wish I got it over my black sapphire S6e.
(the gold S6d I got my gf)
of course, I still prefer the white pearl.

Still debating on a AT&T branded phone vs International version. I found new unlocked AT&T Edge Plus on ebay almost the same price as a regular 6 Edge unlocked. $70 difference but that thing is kind of big so now I'm debating on going the ebay route for the Edge Plus or sticking with the regular s6 edge.
If I did get the international SM-G925F for my son to use on AT&T. How would he get updates pushed to him? Like the update to Marshmallow? Would he have to use a computer to update it or would Samsung just push it to the phone?
ETA:Looking at B&H says it has a 1yr limited warranty through B&H. Is the Samsung one voided because it's unlocked?

the updates are over the air (OTA), and may be released even earlier than carrier models.
I'm guessing that if the warranty is not directly through the manufacturer via B&H, then B&H may be offering an equivalent because the international models are from different other markets. you can always verify with them, but they're a highly regarded business, so you shouldn't have to worry.

Thanks for your help
I think I'm just going to order a G925F from B&H. It's only a few cents different than Amazon but I think it may be easier to deal with a warranty issue if it comes up with B&H than a seller on Amazon since it'll be 3rd party and not sold by Amazon.
eBay has a ATT branded Edge Plus for 699 but I think that may be too big for him to carry in his pocket during school hours.
Looks like the new Jetech glass is getting thumbs up from the thread I read so I'll put that on it and get a Spigen case or maybe a flip cover case I saw on Amazon.
Thanks again

Off topic response:
Down here in India, carrier locked phones are extremely rare. The "international" version of any phone is common. We just walk into a showroom, buy a phone, any phone and done. We have a fully factory unlocked "international" version of the phone.
So tell me, in the United States, can't you just walk into a showroom and get a factory unlocked "international" version of a phone?

Which S6 Edge variant should I purchase?

Hey! This is my first post on the forums, so correct me if this is in the wrong section or anything of that nature. Anyway, I've been interested in purchasing a Galaxy S6 Edge for a while now. I currently use a Nexus 4 on the daily, and I love the Edge's similarly beautiful design. I am going to buy the phone unlocked, as I have never been and will never be locked into a service contract. Right now I use Cricket Wireless in the United States. (which operates on At&t's towers). Cricket only sells the not-so-edgy galaxy s6, but I should be able to use any gsm model on the carrier. I was wondering if there are any reasons to pick one variant over another? Could the non carrier specific ones will receive updates quicker? Or maybe US specific models will operate better in the US (reception wise)? Do some get more developer support from the community for rooting and rom development? Is there even a difference (perhaps not)? These are all just random examples that come to mind. I just want to make sure I'm not hit with any curve ball when making such a large purchase. In any case, it's sure to be an upgrade from 2012. Thanks in advance

The unlocked, unbranded international edition will get you the fastest updates.
Although I have not personally researched it, I have heard from other users that it gets LTE connectivity on AT&T's network, so you are good there.
If you buy any other Variant, updates will be slower.
I would discourage the purchase of the AT&T variant because it is the only one that has not been updated to 5.1
Just make sure you are very careful with where you are buying.
I have heard plenty of stories of people buying the Galaxy S6 online and either it is counterfeit, was stolen, or KNOX had been tripped.

Oh thanks a lot. I didn't even think about counterfeit or stolen devices. But it sounds like international is the way to go
In India, 99% of mobile phones fall into the "unlocked" and "international" version. Carrier based phones are extremely rare.
Since you are from a different country, I suggest you email and ask Samsung about it, because like the others said, could be counterfeit, stolen or KNOX tripped.
