How to enable band 12 for T-Mobile - E 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an unlocked moto e LTE that I just finished rooting. My goal is to enable band 12 again, but I'm unclear how to move forward.
What is the easiest path to reenabling band 12 for better T-Mobile LTE coverage?
Will simply installing CM13 or some other custom rom do it?
Thanks

For the XT1527, Band 12 was only active on the launch firmware, and was disabled in the first update. People have tried flashing the launch radio on later updates, but it didn't enable Band 12, so there's something else besides the radio needed to make Band 12 work.

Does that mean I just need to downgrade back to 5.0 or whatever the initial firmware that supported band 12 was? Is there a guide or has this not been achieved yet?

The original baseband from 5.02 is needed, but I wouldn't recommend the stock 5.02 ROM. Later versions disable band 12 in both the baseband and the ROM. The 5.02 baseband + CM12.1 seems to be the most stable.

What files need to be flashed to downgrade the baseband? Just NON-HLOS.bin and fsg.mbn? Or is there something more?

That's all. Just make sure to download a copy of the current ROM that you're running in case you want to go back to your current baseband. Check this post here for instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64871207&postcount=3

From what I understand, a full copy of 5.01 is not available? And that is the only version that included band 12 support, correct? So does that mean there is no way to downgrade? If it is possible, could you give some direction as to where that ROM / baseband files are located?

The Moto E2 never had 5.01. It launched with 5.0.2. I provided the full filename of the file you should grab in Post #2. The full firmwares are in the firmware topic here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/general/stocks-firmwares-moto-e-t3113235
I believe that firmware version is in one of the Mega folders.

I wanted to try out cm13 and it doesn't look like it will work with the 5.02 baseband. I want to move that way since I want to use the sd card internal storage feature for data.
Thanks

It's possible that band12 might be able to be turned back on using that method, but I haven't been willing to try it myself. It seems like there is a much higher risk of bricking your device than just your standard ROM and kernel flashing, but that's just my opinion. It's not a risk I'm willing to take at this point since this phone is my daily driver.
I can say that I'm currently running the 5.02 baseband with squid2's CM13 0321 build and the r16 kernel and it's been working well. I've only had a single random reboot so far, and ironically it was when I was on xda reading about the baseband requirements for CM13. Battery life has been excellent even when just leaving wifi on, so I've started doing that and it's worked well so far for avoiding the wifi toggle reboot issue. I'm willing to deal with that to have band12 working for now. SD card Internal storage works well also. The only issue I've had is that Titanium backup doesn't see apps that are moved to the SD card, so any apps that I want to freeze have to be left on internal storage.
Good luck if you decide to try the baseband modification, let us know how it goes.

If there was a way of doing it without Windows, I would try it, mainly since I'm only interested in adding the one band and the hardware was designed for it. If someone could do it where I could then flash the file, I would give it a go and report back.

You could always try it in a Windows VM. MS actually has some ready to go on their dev site here https://dev.windows.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/
Just use import appliance in VirtualBox, give it a couple gigs of ram, and then you should be able to select which usb devices you pass to the VM.

OK I'll try it this weekend. Last time I tried something similar I couldn't get adb to work but hopefully this will.

I flashed the 5.1 baseband and decided to give this a try, but I can't figure out how to enable the diag mode in cm13. It looks like it might be possible from the stock rom, but I'm using adopted storage and I don't really feel like going through the hassle that it would entail to go from cm13, to stock, and back again without losing everything.
If anybody knows how to enable usb diag mode in cm13 please let me know.

I started a new thread in general http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/general/guide-enable-lte-bands-surnia-t3351673

[Q] Quick Jellybeans 18 addon question

Hey everyone,
Currently on Jellybeans - Build 18 ROM for my VZW Note 2. everything's working great so far, but was re-reading over the thread for it & noticed the addon section that has the VRAMC3 Modem. my current install seems to be working fine on both 3g & 4g (going on 1 week now with no crashes/downloads interrupted).
Do i need to flash this modem addon, or is this a "if it's not broke, don't fix it" situation?

The conventional wisdom is that you want the latest software to match the latest modem, but if everything is working fine there probably isn't a rush to do it (maybe flash VRAMC3 whenever build 19 comes out and you decide to update).

Not sure, but i think v18 is up to date on the modem (or at least when i look under phone details, baseband version is i605VRAMC3).
again, still new to flashing, so probably wrong but i <3 my Note 2.

If the baseband says VRAMC3 you are on the latest and don't need to do anything. You are set.

When you flash the rom the modem isnt touched. Im on beans18 with the original VRALJB modem. You must have already had the newer modem before you flashed. And the addage if it aint broke dont fix can apply here. If your modem plays good with your hardware and rom then let it be. I havent changed mine and probably wont, unless I get bored and want to try and extensively test which is better. That, however, could end up all in vain since ive read in other threads that it seems like peoples experiences are very subjective to their situation- area, nearby towers, hardware and on and on.

WORKING ROMS FOR UNLOCKED N900V w/VZW (and MVNO) SIMS

While trying to research RIL/baseband for CM13, I have tested virtually every ROM for n900v with various combinations of KK and LP modems.
So far, these are the only two that have worked for me...and I must say that the first works VERY well... tempted to use their sources to build out CM13.
1. Dirty Unicorns v9.8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/orig-development/rom-dirty-unicorns-v9-0-t3006601)
With the OF1 modem/non-hlos, DU 9.8 has working LTE right out of the box, and seems to be a very mature ROM.
2. LiquidSmooth 4.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/development/rom-liquidsmooth-v4-0-lollipop-t3008474)
Liquidsmooth is the only other ROM I have been able to have establish reliable cellular and mobile data. Also using the OF1 modems, but LTE is NOT working reliably. Setting to 3G as preferred works fine and persists through reboots.
3. UPDATE: CM11 OFFICIAL works if you install and boot Dirty Unicorns first, then wipe and flash CM11.. **not working after further testing**
4. CM13...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...opment/rom-temaseks-unofficial-build-t3364382
I have been on my own modded version of Temaseks CM13 for over a week and have had no issues whatsoever. Rock solid.
Anyone else have anything working?
Thats awesome thanks for sharing the information.
What does "non-hlos" mean? Dirty Unicorns looks pretty nice until a real CM rom comes out.

It is a .bin file that is part of the radio
... Nothing you will need to worry about unless you have been flashing different ones already
If you ODINed OF1 to root/unlock, you should be all set to run this.
Yes, it is LP 5.1.1 and is very well put together. I am still trying to figure out why it runs so well... Looks like a combo of straight AOSP with cherry-picked CM12 features.
I flashed the OFI partial firmware back when I put Jasmine on my phone. Should that be enough?

Probably didn't need that partial firmware then. You must have flashed OF1 and rooted at some point, so yes it should be good to go.
if you wanna try, backup your current ROM first in TWRP!

Yup, already have a backup since I already tried CM 13 once with no success. :good: Thanks!
so right now i can wipe data/cache/dalivk and factory reset then install either of the above zips if im on OF1 BL-Unlocked?

Hmmm... you may still be on NC4 or NK1 modems. I am not sure how coming from 4.4.2 would work...and I didn't think unlock was even possible on 4.4.2 yet.

will report any issues with anything i notice
what about NFC and GPS.....Camera?

It is worth noting that DU 9.8 is a dead project... so there aren't going to be any changes unless a new maintainers comes along

Other than these two, every other ROM has major radio issues. All of the CM11 based stuff seems to connect LTE/3G just fine, but will not hold it...the radio constantly cycles. All of the CM13 stuff has radio connected at the base level, but needs some tweaks in order to make it available to the OS properly.

Only data working with Dirty Unicorns and that MVNO was 1G

CM11 getting monthly builds?

Just noticed CM11 official for hltevzw is now getting monthly builds... funny, we have no CM12 or CM13!
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=hltevzw&type=
It got me thinking, though... there are a ton of KK/based roms that are very smooth. In fact, I still think kitkat is the best base for this device as far as stability and battery life. Just look at the size of some of the custom ROMS like DU (180-190 MB) and the fact that they boot in under 20 seconds... even on the initial boot. Crazy efficiency.
I am sure that most people here disagree and interest in running CM11 is pretty low. But it still seems like it should be an option... especially since it is the most current official CM we have (last build is 6-12-2016)
The problem is that the radio in Kitkat doesn't work when coming from OF1. Theoretically, it should work if you ODIN back to KK... but that is not an option given the root/unlock scenarios we have.
So, question is...how do we get the radio working on CM11 coming from OF1... hmmm
I like your thinking mightysween. I saw the same thing last week and wondered myself. Can this be done?

It would seem that flashing the modem would work... but I tried two KK modems with no luck.
Will post some logcats, and maybe we can figure out the right combo.
IDK I am now strongly considering downgrading to 4.4.2. There are a whole lot more stable ROMS available for KitKat than Lollipop for this device. I might pull the trigger this weekend. Currently investigating viability.
Any luck on this?

Not yet... but wow. If you put a new looking theme on any of the refined CM11 based stuff (like DU), people would be abuzz about how smooth and responsive this "new" rom is. I think these older devices are just happier with the older android versions.
Just can't seem to make the radio work...
Have tried as far back as NC4/NK1 modems... but they either don't work at all or exhibit the same problems as OF1.
I wonder if @Moepda might have any insight having worked on sm900 ROMS through the 4.4 to 5.1 updates...
Seems that there must be a modem that would work...or is the newer bootloader version a problem in running 4.4 based roms?
Well... Stupid me never checked to see if ODIN flashing the modems was actually working. It is not! I have tried both tar.md5 versions and directly flashing the modem.bin, and while it appears to work and ODIN says "pass", the modem stays on OF1.
So that's the issue...
That said, it is not a radio problem in general, it is an LTE registration issue. So, when set to 3g only it works AOK!
If I can figure out how to get the flash of NK1 or NC4 modem to stick, I believe LTE would work...

I am going to give this a whirl. I have always had trouble with finding the right gapps for KitKat though. Which did you select?
Notice much drop off in using 3G instead of LTE?
BTW In an earlier post I mentioned I was going to downgrade. Well, that's not really possible and you might already know that. I attempted 4.4.2 and was abruptly stopped by the bootloader. I did read though that 4.4.4 was possible, but if we can do all this and get a stable ROM that has GPS and Bluetooth functional why bother?

I am on wifi about 90% of the time, and when I am not it is usually while driving. So having only 3g doesn't bother me.
Bluetooth and GPS seem to work fine... GPS is certainly faster and more stable than LP/MM

I take that back... You need to set the preferred network to LTE, let it connect (and then fail), and THEN set to 3G in order for it to stick.
Love the feature set from DU, but have to say that the 6-12-2016 nightly is pretty smooth.

Yes, it's running MM. This phone was sold by Rogers locked, and has since been unlocked. From what I can tell the difference between this and a KII-L21 is that the L05 is not listed as dual sim, despite appearing to have the same HW. It must be firmware limited to only use the usim.

Thanks. This is a bit scary since the only time I've flashed CM onto a device it was a Nexus and was super easy. I think I need to make sure I know how to get back to normal MM if I mess this up before I try.

Yeah, in general it's not recommended to flash firmware that's not specifically supported for your device. Luckily, someone else has already taken the risk for you

Does it matter that the fix was done for a different device?

Shouldn't be a problem. I found the information in the Honor 5x CM13 Unofficial thread, here.

Well, I decided to try this today on my KII-L05, but started with just the plain CM13 download. Surprised a bit, but it worked fine on my device without me changing anything, calls, LTE, Wifi, Bluetooth, camera all appear to be fully functional. Only thing is my device doesn't know its device model anymore in the settings, which seems of no importance.

Hi Jemez,
I just got the KII-L05 also. How is the phone working for you since you flashed it?
Can you point me to the procedure you used to root?
Thanks

It was ok until today. I tried to do an OTA update, and it hung on the boot screen. From what I'm seeing in the forum, this looks like a known issue with not using CM13 recovery.
I didn't root, I just unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP, did a full backup onto an external SD card, and then flashed the new ROMs onto it. The backup on the SD made life much easier today when it hung, I was easily able to revert to the original OS, make sure everything was ok, and now I've swapped to Resurrection remix.
I flashed CM13 last night on my KII-L05, boy what a difference. Very snappy!
One hiccup did occur when I installed the latest nightly via TWRP. I received an Error 7 when installing. It stated that the package was for kiwi where my device was "."
Googled around and learned that the update_script in the CM13 install package is validating the device model / variant.
Essentially I had to remove the "assert" lines validating the model in the update_script.
After that, install was successful.
By any chance do you still have your backup? I can't seem to get mine to work.

For CM and LineageOS there is no need to do an edit of build.prop. Init will detect the variant just fine and set the props by itself. Currently the variant is not supported on CM13, will include it at least tomorrow, just got the necessary info today. After that, updates won't require editing the install script anymore because model will be set as well. Next time please inform us in the thread, we were not aware of that model at all.
i think, lineage 14.1 is now available for canadian version, check out guys..there is an announcement in the thread

Yes and if you would read the thread before posting, you would have seen
a) I answered them already
b) This thread is about CM13, not CM/LineageOS 14.1 and i have not yet added support to CM13...
Which specific Lineage 14.1 should I use for KII-L95? is it the honor 5x? does it requires additional steps to do?

Leave some posts so I know it works OK, I'm new to this
It would be good if someone could post if this rom was ok, as have a T825 rom built with the same method that I cannot test, due to having a T820 myself. So speak up please
Thank you for this. Now I have to ask a couple of newbie questions. I've been exclusively in the Sony Xperia and Nexus worlds before, this being my first Samsung. In trying to figure out if the processes I've become familiar with are applicable to this device, using your ROM.
For instance, my Sony's were pretty easy after the initial root. Kind souls in the community took new releases and created a pre-rooted firmware with TWRP and SuperSU built-in. I could then just dirty flash the ROM from TWRP, sometimes wiping cache/dalvic, and like magic my device is upgraded with no loss of data.
Is this how it works with this AQF5 ROM? I'm starting with a rooted (@ashyx method) T820 with AQBB. Do I just download the rooted ROM to SD card, boot to TWRP, dirty flash and go?
Thanks again!
Hi,
Dirty flash should work, sometimes I try that first and if I get any strange behaviour, do a wipe and re flash then load the rest back with titanium backup. Make sure you have all your backups organised first before starting.
Let me know how it works out. The risk with the first option is something residual being left that may result in force closes or just defeating the purpose.
Just beware if for some reason it doesn't root DM verity will occur and you will be forced to format internal data so back that up to your external card too, before, just in case, shouldn't happen though. I have no idea how many others have used this yet as there have been no replies to say all ok

Not sure I can use this ROM in Germany, what kind of modifications are made? Would love to see some development
As long as you have the same model T-820 you can, some local variants have a local customisation but it's likely to be minor with this model. From memory when I set it up on mine all common languages were available, if that's your concern, make sure you have a twrp backup and you can always roll back
The only mods were as listed above, seems slightly quicker, perhaps the zip aligning, but it will allow more mods as they come along

Always, Knox is there to tell Samsung if you've done this sort of thing, it's just what you accept with custom roms

I have always wondered about that. Flashing a base from another country. Like I live in the US so I always have flashed USA versions. You are
saying that I CAN flash this Korean version on my T-820 phone and have all working ok with English ?
Thank you

For the record, I don't live in the us but bought mine from best buys whilst there, it was rooted within a couple of hours from memory,..... can't help myself ?.
I Flashed a firmware from another country after that,, just because it was a later series, can't remember which.
I use the Tweaked one as my daily driver, people seem to be finding that good. I have found the latest firmware now seems to carry out a full wipe, and I haven't managed to flash a rom over it yet, so reverted back to the Tweaked version I have.
It may require an update to TWRP
If you have any problems restore your backup, if you want to persist flash the firmware that its based on first,AQF5, then flash the ROM over it, with our without wipe.

Thanks,
This rom is not being developed any more, but the tweaked version in this forum, is based off the stock firmware which came after this,it runs stable, has a few enhancements and being a later base it's got a number of Samsung security updates too.
Would this thread be applicable to a Wi-Fi only S3 model "SM-T820NZKAXAR" ?
