Choppy Animations - OnePlus X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys.
I bought my opx last month and for the most part of it I am very happy with the phone. I am an android newbie (I know what the terms flash, ROM, kernel etc mean but never tried something on my phone). One issue that really bugs me (apart from the little lag here and there when moving to shelf or when closing certain tabs from 'recent') is that whenever I select something from the settings, the 'select' animation (that little circle that expands) is really laggy and choppy. On the other hand, I tried it on my friend's opx and is was way smoother. (this was an issue from the start btw it is not that I installed a bad app or something). So, any ideas why this is happening? Should I try to flash a certain ROM or install a custom kernel? Is there a good build that improves performance?
Thanks in advance!

You can try to reduce animation speed in developers options. Perhaps your friend also did this.

backup everything and factory reset the device. it should fix it, if it doesn't then it probably is a hardware issue(unlikely)...
also make sure that you are on the latest version of OOS, i.e. 2.2.0-X.

Actually I removed the animator scale completely because it was very choppy as i said. I tried it at x23 and x50 but still the same. :/

That's really strange. Have you tried factory resetting it? I used the stock rom in it's entirety for about a week and it was perfectly smooth and usable. I only switched to a different kernel because people were saying that it helped 3D performance noticeably (and they were right.).

No I haven't. Maybe I should give it a try. The problem is that I removed animator scale completely and it doesn't bother me anymore, so I am not that motivated to factory reset . Btw, If i want to install the bluespark kernel you are probably talking about, I have to be rooted? Also does installing a custom kernel require a data wipe?

You do need to be rooted and have a custom recovery installed. The cool thing about 1+ is that neither of these things (which requires an unlocked bootloader) will void the warranty. Unlocking the bootloader will wipe the phones data sadly, I've never understood why. My Moto G did the same thing..

[Q] Jelly Bean Very Laggy and Slow

Background: Updated my ICS unlocked i9300 to JB finally last night.
Can anyone advise why when i was on ICS, i was experiencing no lag at all and the entire experience was really nice, but now i have upgrade to JB the experience is very poor due to allot of lag and general system slowness? For example, if i kill the messaging app from long pressing the home key (with a kill all open tasks), when i re-open the messaging i will be greeted with only phone numbers on the display initially but then after a sec or 2 the names and pics are populated. Also another exapmle would be the keyboard (stock one), when clicking in the URL box of any browser or in the messaging app (again stock as before), the keyboard takes quite some time to appear!?!
It seems very odd to me as JB is supposed to be very good with it's "butter" but is not performing for me at all in the way it should?!?
Any help greatly appreciated as i now no-longer like my phone very much :crying:

Guess what???
Problem is not jellybean... its you.
There's no way jellybean is very slow compare to your ics..
If ics is faster for you then go back to the ics.
I got the exict same problem ! the main theme ringtone in the start booting screen plays but no video just black screen with the sound.. Afrer it boots its very very laggy and after like 15min the phone freez with black screen.
i got the update today im from kuwait .
Seems as if wiping cache and dalvik has been forgotten. ..

'Crest+', very unhelpful answer and the type of answer you'd expect from dumb asses that use nokia. If you bothered searching the net you'd realise that this issue has affected allot of people and i thought i'd ask the experts at xda - but i guess trollers have made it here as well.
Wiping was not done in my case due to the fact that it was not advised to do so via any point of the update and should have been setup to be more like the upgrade from froyo to GB and actually worked properly without having to do so on other devices. Why would anyone want to wipe the cache and dalvik if not prompted to do so via the official process?!?

No as it was not required but it would appear this is the only possible resolve... Joy, time to backup and restore tonight which knowing kies will take about 4.5 hours...

but since there are people experiencing also..

Here's what you need to do... try flashing a full firmware from sammobile...probably the latest firmware to make sure its updated...
then flash it using odin... I never experienced this so called lag that's why I answered the question based on my experience.

Not a problem, i will try the factory reset first as i should have the full latest seeing as it was stock updated through kies last night. Worst case scenario is i go back to custom romming it.

Due to me not having much time at the point of needing to format and restore i decided to carry on for a few days until getting the opportunity, but oddly the issue seems to have gone now
The only thing i can link it to is the fact that i ran through all the settings and was greeted with the annoying 'help' popups, and once i cycled through al the menus getting rid of the last popup...no more lag The phone is running very smooth (as it should), but really can't see how the menu aids were slowing it down (if they were), but they are the only thing i can link the issue to :silly:

I have tried many jb roms and i have to say that although jb is extremely smooth,I always find it extremely slow compared to good old GB.
I have the feeling that they have sacfificed speed for smoothness!
Same thing on mine Galaxy S3
I've just experienced same thing as you..
Sluggish, laggy.. and everything after i did official update to Jelly Bean..
Resolve:
Turn phone off
VOL UP+HOME+POWER..
Wipe cache...
That's it
At least it's working for me

[Q] Disabling back lit soft keys on screen touch

I recently flashed my Samsung Fascinate with PowerWashed Team's PWGB Version 2.0 (Beta 3). I'm terribly new to using custom ROMs, but I'm quite pleased with the results. I've only had one concern with this ROM regarding the back light on the soft keys. They light up every time I touch my screen or press a hard key.
I've attempted to find a setting for this in the OS and in CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v2.5.1.x screen, but wasn't able to find such a setting (Again, I'm very green so it could be right under my nose and I simply don't know it.)
I also attempted to install myriad apps to keep the back light off on screen touch including:
Screen Filter (No effect)
Night Mode (No effect)
Light Flow Lite - LED Control (No effect)
Light Manager - LED Settings (This app actually stops the back light from coming on, however it's unpredictable and works >15% of the time)
I've also done a lot of searching on the matter. I've seen where others have stated the problem, but none where there was a solution or enough information for me to further investigate a way to fix this. It's also been complicated to find information due to a variety of search terms (soft keys, led, etc.) yielding results about the camera or other things that are unrelated to my issue coupled with my lack of direct knowledge on the matter.
I'd really appreciate any advice on either directly fixing this or a source of information so I may learn more from what is causing this behavior and fixing it myself. Thanks, everyone for all the time and effort you've put in for making things like this accessible to individuals like me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.
This behavior is a product of the kernel, and most people find it desirable. If you install the kernel control app nstools, you should see an option called cmled timeout, allowing you to set the led backlight timeout.

Thanks for the information! Unfortunately, the ROM I flashed has a stock kernel and doesn't offer this option. So, I suppose that's the first thing I need to address, but now I know where the problem lies! Thank you so much for your time and input, I'll put it to good use.
Are you saying the back lights light up even if you just touch the screen? That's strange, they only have ever lit up for me when I actually touch a soft key or hit the power button to wake the phone up.
Well good luck, I'm not sure what kernel is best for GB as I started flashing custom roms during ICS and I'm now on Jelly Bean and never going backwards.

Yes, exactly this. It is really odd and very bothersome when trying to read at night. Even if I use the volume rocker to turn the page the lights will come on. It's maddening. I'm currently looking at the kgb kernel, but I think the nstools led option isn't actually going to address this quirk. (Directly, I believe I will end up disabling the led altogether)
If you don't mind, what rom did you choose?(Ignore, I was on mobile and did not see your signature at the time)
How has the performance been? I'm interested in doing the same, but was afraid my fascinate wouldn't handle jb very well.
Well needless to say it's different for everybody when it comes to roms, sometimes your phone will have no problem running a certain rom where as someone else's might not even boot. As for myself I've been pretty fortunate and have been able to try any rom I've wanted to with success, and I'll give you a few of my thoughts on it.
If you're wondering about performance, well simply put JB blows everything else away and runs like a dream on the Fascinate. Once you spend a few days with it you'll never want to go back honestly. Even on our aging hardware, it runs amazingly fast, even without kernel performance tweaks.
Anyway, as far as roms go, if you're most concerned with stability and reliability then I would highly suggest CM10 (whatever the latest nightly version is). Of all the roms I've tried, it's by far the one that's given me the least hassle. That said, I'm quite fond of the tweaks offered in AOKP, mainly the voltage settings (for battery life) and the fact that it seems to vibe much better with Devil kernel than CM10 does. I've been running my current rom/kernel for a couple of weeks now, and I'm happy enough with how it's running to keep it as my daily driver for a while.
This isn't to say the GB roms aren't any good, because of course they are, but considering how nice JB roms run on our phone you'd be doing a disservice by not at least giving them a shot.

You sold me on the idea of JB. Flashed it today, and I love it so far. Plus, my soft key lights aren't constantly on! Win-win.
Thank you so much for the guidance. Your input helped turn a satisfactory experience with ROMs into a trully positive one.
Glad to hear you liked it man, I was reluctant at first too due to (at the time) no 'official' releases, but I'm glad I made the jump. I'm quite enjoying AOKP M1 and will probably stay on it for a long time. Which rom did you end up trying?

I was really impressed with your review, so I chose to go with the same rom. It also seemed like the most stable option and easiest for me to understand the installation procedure (very important for me since this is my only device and more than just my daily driver, it's my life line). I had been extremely hesitant to go to JB for fear of junking my phone up, but I'm really glad I took the extra risk. I just needed an extra bit of encouragement. Thanks again for all your input!
If you managed to install AOKP smoothly you can pretty much install any rom the same way, basically meaning wipe data and cache/davlik then flash whatever you want to. Luckily this phone happens to be very hard to break, and you'd have to do something pretty extreme to brick it. I highly recommend Titanium backup pro so you can just backup the apps you want, and restore them in no time when you're trying different roms. Also, I've been using some voltage settings that make battery life insanely good, so if you're interested in doing that let me know and I'll post them.

Regarding the key back light, since you are on aokp jellybean now if you still want to tweak the settings, goto settings and then device settings. There you can adjust the timeout on them

[Q] How to restore to HC?

Hi all!
Could you be so kind and help me revert back to honeycomb stock?
I know it sounds crazy, but I cant stand anymore how slow and laggy CM 10.1 I currently use is on this device. I've tried a lot of things like factory reset, reflushing lates nightly etc. Still horribly slow and at times totally unresponsive.
My ultimate goal is return back to task650 rom.
However I cannot find any HC stock images. I do not think that I can simply flush HC rom in CM 6.0.3.1 recovery.
I was only able to find hc-3.2_touchwiz_ux-full_sam_tab_10.1.zip from pershoot.
Please advise! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Not sure where to find an HC-image yet, but what about trying Omni-ROM 4.4.2 KitKat newest build (+ A1-Kernel)?
It still has got some quirks, like bluetooth-audio not working or slow Video-decoding, but the rest is quite good and fluid now.
Thanks for your reply! However we are talking about my wife tablet and she needs video/cameras and BT.
So, unfortunately KK is out consideration at this point.
By the way, is KK Omni really that better? Thought I guess anything is better then touching screen and seeing touch and then waiting a couple of seconds for an action to really happen. I do not know what Google changed in memory management, but it now doesn't hold a candle against older versions. At least for such old device as Tab 10.1 is.
If your wife doesn't need much features, go for Omni 4.3. Its very smooth and stable enough for daily use.

Camera works; Bluetooth works also, just not streaming audio to a bluetooth-audio-device; Videos also work. Lokally stored seem to be better than streamed (YouTube, gameone, etc.)

Then... What about JellyBean3 (Android 4.3.1)?
I think most if not all you need is already compatible on that and it is a lot better in any case, thought.

Even 4.1.2 cm10 was superior,... What do you think you can expect from a Kitkat-Build?
IMHO, yes it is, even with those little quirks...
...and not to be mean, but I really don't think any 4.2-build can be called stable... They all have heavy idle-times/"hangs" up to a minute, if you've got some CPU&IO-Load-Hungry apps installed and running...

Well... May be it is my bad luck... I do not remember any CM build of any version that was smooth as Task650 rom.
So, you suggest to try rollback to 4.1? I though they stopped development.
Wife use BT streaming... I just got her nice LG headphones.
I guess I softened the problem a little bit for now by removing all apps that create background services and account. FB, LinkIn etc.
It helped a little bit.

Nope. I think you should rather try a 4.3.x-based build.

Help: Extreme lag and screen stuttering issues with CyanogenMod 11 on HTC One X+

I just bought a brand new HTC One X+ a few days ago for a really good price on eBay. Immediately after receiving it, I unlocked the bootloader, rooted, flashed CWM and installed the latest CyanogenMod 11 snapshot. To my surprise, the device lags and sometimes freezes for minutes in completely simple tasks like pulling down notifications or typing on the keyboard. I've tried a lot of stuff, but nothing has worked so far.
I'm convinced this can't be a problem with the phone, the specs are too good for it to lag in such simple things. I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S III with a CM11 nightly and that didn't have any lag even though the specs were technically lower. Also, another problem I'm experiencing is that the screen "blinks", as in it has a sort of stutter effect which is really annoying. I don't know whether this has to do with CM or with the phone itself, but the blinking problem doesn't happen in recovery or fastboot mode.
Is there anyone who can help me figure out why this is happening? Thanks.
Is there anyone who can help me? I need my phone to be functional as soon as possible, thanks

Flash Nik3r's kernel. You will find it in the android development section.
Also running a huge amount of apps will screw with the device, and a reboot now and again doesn't hurt

Use EliteKernel, it will be much more faster. For me the stock CM kernel is troublesome, phone lags, battery drains, and heat up the phone quite much.

What is best option for nexus9.

Hi guys,
I'm sorry cause asking this, especially cause this question has been asked manytimes and I have read several subjects too, but I didn't strict answer I'm looking for.
I recently bought nexus 9 (WiFi only model) 16gigs,
I unlocked bootloader, I rooted the device and now I want to debloat it.
I'm in dilema weither I should just have it rooted and debloated on 7.1.1. android, or should I use some of the custom roms around.
I'm aiming to use tablet mainly for gaming. I have servral games I'd like to play listed:
Marvel Future Fight
DC Legends
Star Wars Galaxy Heroes
Star Wars Force arena
and few others but i take it that if those can run fine, all others would too.
Also can someone point me to a safelist of application that can be removed if answer to first question is to just leave it rooted and debloat.
Thank you a lot for help.
Cheers.

Hi guys,
I'm sorry cause asking this, especially cause this question has been asked manytimes and I have read several subjects too, but I didn't strict answer I'm looking for.
Cheers.

For the best performance, install a custom ROM. As for debloat, ... It's a Nexus, what bloat?
But if you want minimal, I would say flash slimrom and the smallest gapps package that fits your needs. Or go gapps free and use micro g instead.
Performance on stock is pretty bad (really bad), but a custom ROM will fix it for the n9. When I say bad on stock, I mean opening more than 1 tab in chrome, it has to reload the page every time switching between the two. Same with having a couple apps open.
Fortunately, most of the ROMs out there take care of all that.

I'm on latest Android 6 stock, unencrypted and Fire Ice kernel. its running fine and if use the chrome that comes with the stock and don't update it, it will run fine.
How would someone find official roms? I used pure nexus rom thinking that is official but i guess i was wrong. I not to big on roms knowing. They all looks the same to me I just care to be able to uninstall builtin apps i don't use and that everything works fine.
This one i use now had a problem common with nexus 9, white blocks and anoying skrechy sound, but i read somehwere it is fixed by unhoking battery, cleaning pins and putting it back together. I tried it and I didn't have problems since then. I drained battery to 2% no problem, before it was impossible. I have no idea was it ROM issue or what.

That's a common hardware issue for n9, not a ROM issue.

But it's safe to say that it's fixed now. Everyone was talkin about disconnecting battery, and clean a bit and connecting again.
it seems such a easy troll solution to this "very anoying and hard problem that even HTC didn't solve", and i did it and it really did the job (knock on a wood ). I've been draining battery to the end for 3 days now, nothing ever like that happend ever again. before it wasn't even a day when i didn't experienced that problem.

Good to hear. That usually is the fix for that.
Please, just to confirm, is this "image-volantis-n9f27l" official ROM or it's custom ROM?
I also use this bootloader : "bootloader-flounder-3.50.0.0143" since other ones didn't work for me.
I was with support trying to solve issue of Device restarting every time I install new app or update app, and while trying to clear cache partition, it gone to my device not wanting to boot. so i had to factory reset, and it still won't start android in full. so i have to reflash ROM. I guess.
I'm kinda lost now cause i don't know what to do.
As said i just want for my device to be rooted so i can delete all apps i don't need and change launcher (deleting existing one - well i don't know if it's smart or not. i figure why having two launcers when i will use only one).
And i want to play games and use apps without it failing on me all the time.
