With a root file manager navigate to root-system/media/audio, then replace the folders with the ones provided in the zip. Verify that the permissions are correct (folders and files inside), then reboot. Its a good idea to make a backup folder with the stock files in case you want to revert to the stock sounds.

Just unzip, move the 'audio' folder into the 'notifications' folder on your device and reboot. Make sure you delete the extracted folder for where ever you extracted to and keep what's been moved in 'notifications' folder or you'll get duplicates for each sound. If you do have duplicates then just accept it or look through one by one and delete duplicated sound from 'notifications' folder.
I'm theory you can have these sounds anywhere as it will just pick up the .ogg files and add it to your list of sounds. I like to keep them separate in 'notifications' folder.

I have just
duplicate your different folders (UI, notifications etc etc) in the folder audio,
Change permissions for each files,
not delete the original folder, just rename with 'back' at the end.
And no sound!!!

You don't have to move anything into the system - media - audio folder or change any permissions. These can be in your download folder and they will still be picked up.
A while back Samsung made it so you can't add any audio to the media - audio location in your device so from then we just move the ogg files to the notification folder on your sdcard (not external bit may still work).

Hey all..
I have a few media players installed on my hero, but on the preinstalled one is there a way to get it to ignore a folder? I am currently learning spanish and have about 500 mp3's on the phone. It unfortunatly lists them all on the media player. I want to get it to ignore them so when i let it play my entire playlist on random it wont choose any of those.
is there a way? I have MixZing lite which does have an option to look at specific folders, but it wont intergrate with the lock screen (which is really very handy!). I tried adding the .nomedia onto the directory but to no avail....
I had the same problem, so far all I've done is hide the entire folder by stiking a '.' on the front of the folder e.g. hide the folder 'hidestuffinhere' by renaming it '.hidestuffinhere' using Astro or something.
The media player ignores everything under these folders:
\Media\Alarms
\Media\Ringtones
\Media\Notifications
However, if you move your spanish mp3s into these folders, they'll show up in alarms, ringtones or notifications.

Try a reboot,
If it doesn't work, backup your SD to your PC. Then format the SD card through the phone and recopy your data back.

Tried to do the same on my HTC pro but file explorer does not allow me to rename a folder with a name starting with a dot "." ??????

Yeah, I use Astro, and it works fine.
Yep just used Astro to change my download folder (where I download ringtones to on my sd card) anyways in the music player it used to show a load of unknown albums and list the weird ringtones I had downloaded.
Changed the folder through Astro .downloads and now the music player doesn't pick up those unwanted files.
The other alternative is:
Using notepad, create an empty file
save the file as .nomedia (do not save as .txt, but "All files")
add the file .nomedia to the folder you want to avoid showing media from
This works for video, photos and MP3. They can still be accessed using file explorer.

I've 800/900 songs on my phone each has an attached "album art" image (due to the way I had to format them for my Sansa Fuse, each song in a folder with album art) any to get to the point of this thread, the gallery app shows everything, caches the lot, I don't want to see millions of pictures of the same thing, I just want to be albe to ignore these folders & just show my camera/wallpapers/whatever else I choose, not every image on my phone
Please tell me there is a way to do it, or point in the direction of an app that will perform the way I want it

Cheers Lenny, but as I mentioned above, that would be 800/900 folders I'd have to edit, I'd prefer to select the folders I want to view and would the dot prevent my music apps from seeing the folders too?
I could go back and re format all my music just to have one album art image in, but I'd rather not & the extra folders would still show up

This worked, as a test of the theory. I'd a folder named MP3 on my card containing them all, I moved that into the .mixzing folder (couldn't rename MP3 Folder to .MP3 windows won't let you), but the only problem with that is now there appears to be no music on my card, Gallery works perfect as predicted
The .mixzing folder is not selectable by MixZing.....

ah never thought that far ahead. you can still play the files using something like astro though (as a not so perfect workaround for the time being).
Try adding a file in the directory you want ignored with the filename '.nomedia' The gallery will ignores these folders. (Works for music and videos too)

Don't make this mistake.. his will simply delete the files!
In theory, that should work, but i experienced many problem with this .nomedia file:

No, no I won't, 800/900 .nomedia files, which, no doubt, will hide the the mp3 file too
Try this so that your music files are not deleted:
1. Backup your folder that contains all the music and album art onto your pc.
2. in the PARENT directory of the 800/900 folders put a file in there called ".noimage" (without the quotes).
3. now your album art shouldn't show up in pictures, but your mp3's will come up in the player.
4. If it does delete the music/album art after a restart, then keep the .noimage file in the parent folder and then put your files back from the PC.
5. if you don't have the 800/900 files in a seperate parent folder then do so.
6. let me know how you get on. but please make sure you have backed up your media.
Put a new txt file into the folder, remaned it with Astro File manager, Windows won't let you do that, images still in Gallery, still no luck Bad4ss, thanks for trying

I've never really taken a look at the android source code but are you even sure that's the _ONLY_ code related to .nomedia in the entire project?
There is something that deletes those files and it does seem related to .nomedia according to all those reports.

Are you telling all the people complaining in Google code are liars?
I don't want you to have the same issue than me ( 1.2 Gb of beautiful holidays pictures that were lost with a .nomedia file in the same directory.
I tried to mount the SDCard on a mac and a PC and both of them showed an empty directory!
I succes to get back my pictures with some tools for getting back files on a formated disk!
I don't care about what you thinbk, i just told my story so that don't happen to other users! Feel free to say i'm a fool, but so.. i am not alone!

I just had the same experience with video files (*.mp4) deleted from a folder when I've
put the .nomedia file in it and the videos were already indexed by the Media Scanner.
So it seems this issue is general for all file types.

I too have noticed undesirable behaviour when using the .nomedia file. Indeed, as
metago.inc states, when images or movieclips are added after the .nomedia file, these
files do not get deleted.

This is the most serious issue I have found on the Android platform and, in my

WOW.. This is unbelievable.. Sorry for my assumption and possible misdirection, i have a HTC hero without problems and I checked the source so I thought no problem but after some more research it appears that the problem starts even at some other hero users..

I am trying to copy some files in system/media/audio/notifications to be used as notification sound but it's not getting copied. I am using File Expert to do this. I have mounted FE as readwrite but the files are not getting copied. First I tried to copy .wav files than I converted the same to .ogg. Still not able to copy those files.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

This requires root!
The sounds (by default) are stored in /system/media/audio/ui/
!NOTE: This is for system/OS sounds. Notifications etc are not stored here!
Screen touch sound is "TW_Touch.ogg" and back and menu button sounds are "S_HW_Touch.ogg"
If you would like to change the sound to something else, find a mp3 or something that you would like to use then convert it to a .ogg format.
Can be done on this website: htt$p://audio.on$line-convert.$com/convert-to-ogg *Remove $ symbols from URL
Then rename your new .ogg to either "TW_Touch.ogg" or "S_HW_Touch.ogg" dependent on what sound you would like to change.
Place the .ogg file on your sd card and move it the mentioned directory and overwrite (delete) the original .ogg file (backup first).
Then remember to set the permissions of the .ogg file to "rw-r--r--" and make sure it is named correctly, it is case sensitive.
Reboot system and enjoy your new sounds :good:
I tried everything that you said and it doesn't work for me. When i try to move/overwrite the file it tells me "Cannot copy or move file". When i try to delete the orginal file first it tells me "Warning - Could not delete". I am on stock rom and rooted. When i try to change permissions to the original files it gives me error "unable to chmod /system/media/...bla bla". What to do?

Your root has failed, download root checker to see.
If it fails you will need to re-root with CF-Root.

I am running into an issue. My phone has been verified as rooted by rootchecker. The only way I can see the root directory on the phone is with Astro File Manager. Once in the correct folder, I can see the TW_TOUCH.OGG file and have a replacement. However I can't write to the folder. I can't even rename the original. Checking the properties of the file I don't see any notations that the file or folder are write protected. I assume the entire drive is per se with the exception of the \SDCARD directory.
Is there a better tool for doing all this? I'd like to have something I can use from a PC as well.

Use Super Manager or Android Commander .

First you need to Root.
There are good guides around here.
I'd recommend ES File Explorer
Download it then
Open ES File Explorer
Menu > Settings > Root settings.
Check Root Explorer
Click Grant when SU popup appears.
Check Up to Root
and Check Mount File System.
Now it will copy succesfully to the system folder.
Slightly easier
No need to do renaming. Save desired oggs to your ext sd card.
Use Root Browser (ES doesnt seem to go to system no matter)
Use Root Browser. Go to your ext sd card. Long press on the desired .ogg. Copy it.

Click paste. If your file is named correctly it will ask 'replace?' click yes. Do the same for the other file.
Reboot. You have to reboot. How it still plays water droplets before rebooting Idk. But reboot and you back to clicky goodness. (who thought of that water droplet. Chinese water torture.)

Ok so i ran into a problem. Im using es file explorer and i accidentally changed my keyboard tap sound without backing up the original one. I also didnt look at the permissions before i changed it. Can someone tell me what the permissions are? Thx in advance. Im on a Samsung Galaxy s3. Im working on turning it into a halo themed phone, complete with halo system sounds and even halo themed icons.

Rw-r-r. In a grid of 1 to 9, top left to bottom right, 1,2,3,4 ticked. 5,6,7,8,9 unticked. Should be immediate but if not, just reboot.

Hi, does anyone know how to edit Android/Data and Android/OBB folder?
I can't move any files to those folders and I can't edit the contents even rename it too.
It was just fine when I'm on OneUI 3. After I update it to OneUI 4, which is Android 12, those folders completely uneditable.
I CAN still access it, I just CAN'T edit the inside of those folders.
not sure what folder you are referring to, but you can reproduce the issue and submit error to samsung members app > get help > error report.
Samsung should be able to confirm what the issue is. Hope this helps.

I've tried this.
The thing is, I can access the OBB and Data folders but I cannot edit the contents inside of it. So I can't rename or add anything inside those folders..
Try TotalCommander file manager.
