LG G5 build quality and overheating during video chat - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Two somewhat connected issues:
Many users have had G4 hardware failures. Does anyone know if LG has identified the source and addressed this issue? Is this due to an overtaxed motherboard and overheating processor?
Several years after the original Droid experience it seems that manufacturers are still struggling to offer an optimized videochat experience.
HD signals and 4K upscaling are way too taxing for the G4 internals, at ambient temperature and with two HD cameras video chatting, the G4 overheats and automatically shuts down after about 10 minutes of use. I'm aware of the reported overheating issues of the G4 processor, the question is clear.
Will the G5 be able to hold two-way video chat (Skype) calls without melting down?
Thanks!

Why are you using skype? Use hangouts if you want the best video chat experience on an Android Phone.
Thats like using skype instead of iMessage on an iPhone. Of course the experience wont be a as good.

Skype for work I suppose, lot of company here in VN use Skype

Yes, in many ways Skype is a bloated app to use on any small device, compared to other newer VOIP and apps with the same functions. TBH.

That's not what he asked though. If he chooses to use Skype whether it is bloated or not is his choice. He asked if the G5 would be able to handle it without overheating.

The title of the thread is so wrong. I thought the G5 was suffering from that

I can't agree more

My wife and I use Facebook messenger to video chat when I work night. We used to use Facetime when I had an iPhone (6S+) but Facebook Messenger is actually better. The video is smoother and it seems to be a higher resolution. I haven't had any overheating problems with the SD 820 on the S7 Edge.

Skype video chat for gtab?

Is there anyway to get Skype videochat on Gtablet? I have IMOMessenger so I can actually use Skype text chatting and such, but I wanted to know if its possible to videochat with Gtab... Or videochat with any other programs?
Thanks,
I would be interested in this too. I have tried Skype and Fring to no avail.
The devil aka steve jobs has bribed skype to only come out with an app for iphone and ipad. The android community isn't nified enough to organize a resistance.
Google talk video works pretty well with the VTok app in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061097
Works ok, at least till the official updated Google Talk (with video) app is released for Tegra devices.
Justin
Why is Skype this gullible? They did the same deal with Verizon. Skype video works on HTC Thunderbolt. To think that I actually have a paid subscription with Skype and unable to use it on both my HTC EVO 4G and Viewsonic GTablet both with front-facing camera for video chat hurts.
Where is a formidable competition to Skype? Gizmo should have done that but Google bought them years ago and put a lid on it.

Skype currently only has voice servers for android, and for those of us who have been waiting for a video version for android, we maybe out of luck. Microsoft purchased skype just days ago. Although they are saying they will continue to provide services for other platforms beside windows, its doubtful new development will be made in areas like adding video for android.

Skype now supports Video on Photon!

The new build of Skype has added video calling support for a number of new devices, including the Photon. It's about time!
Just did a video call between my Evo 3d and photon. Photon seems to have much better ffc video quality, even though I believe it's lower resolution?

Works great front/back and on 3g also.

Outstanding!!!!! I had no clue this was coming for the photon..just did a video call beween my photon and laptop...works great

I had a video chat with the wife and the video quality sucked on both phones..... it was very choppy, we were both on wifi and on the same network. Anyone have similar results?
I could not get my phone to use speakerphone... video chatting sucks if you have to keep using your ear on the headset speaker.
My MoPho works better for Skype and Gtalk video than any other phone I've used.

My 3G calls were choppy and not so hot, but both 4G and WiFi looked a whole lot better for me. I'll test more this weekend.
My MoPho doesn't enter in the skype (as my O2X). Skype doesn't accept user name or password. User name and password is absolutely correct - I was checking it and entered on the computer and on the site repeatedly. Any ideas ?
I am on 3G in Minneapolis and just tried skype video chat with my girlfriend. She was on iPhone 4. The call was very smooth. Love it!
Tried it out with two photons in a sprint store on 4g and the quality was horrible my qik works way better.

I've tried with my co-workers and their DRIOD bionic's. It worked AWESOME! In fact my camera was much clearer than his, even with my bad 3g signal @ work.
Love Skype on my Photon
I downloaded it and did some Skype Calls. Worked great and looked great. I really don't understand the complaints, unless they were in a bad coverage area.
I have had Skype crash (stopped working) several times. I just deleted it and downloaded it.
Not bad for a first draft with video. Did not take them that long to get it out.
I have the photon and the epic and the camera is way better on the photon when using skype,,,,

Is anyone else experiencing problems with Skype video? When I made a call using version 2.5, which I believe is the first version that works with the cams on the Photon, the other person's video is rotated by 90 degrees to landscape mode when I'm viewing it in portrait mode. When I turn the phone to landscape mode, the other person's video rotates again to portrait mode. This means that the other person's video feed is always sideways and rotated 90 degrees from what it should be. The other person I spoke to on video said the same problem happened with them but it was on an EVO.
Am I alone in this or have any of you experienced the same problem?
I also have the same issue and it annoys the crap out of me. I thought i was the only one.
Sent from my Moto Photon 4g
While it doesn't help the problem, it does make me feel a little more at ease to know that it's not just me having this video issue with Skype.
Looks good. Works GREAT!!!

What version of Skype are you running? I'm running 2.5.0.108.

Might be switching to WP7... But apps

Hey guys. So I'm thinking of going to windows phone, i like it and all but there doesn't seem to be a lot of apps? and a lot of them cost a lot, like fruit ninja is 2.50 compared to 69p on Android.
Any help? Are there a lot of good free apps?

Ah, my friend, if you want a phone that syncs with your social networks, email and phone contacts, along with simplicity and ease with no hassle. A Windows phone is for you.
If you want a phone purely for apps and games, I would recommend an iPod Touch 4G, obviously if TomTom and GPS matters, then I would recommend an iPhone.
If you want to gain easy root access and modify the brains out of your phone, then I recommend Android. It's a big decision to make.
I chose Windows, after using all three OS's, and yes I'm a casual gamer, I love tweaking, but I don't even wish to tweak this phone, as it's so pretty.
As for apps, they have many, games most definitely cost more than all three OS's. Hope that helps.

If you are coming from Android, you will be disappointed at the prices of Windows Phone apps and especially, games. They are exorbitant in comparison.
Windows Phone is a young OS, which is trying to catch up quickly. Perhaps wait for another 6 months or so before you switch.
I too was in the same position 2 months ago.
I think the real question should be, what apps do you use? It's easy to look at the three marketplaces and say that the Windows Marketplace is lacking in apps. But do you really need that many apps? Switching to WP7 made me cut down on installing crapps. I found a good alternative for every core iOS app that I was using and in the end am very happy with what the marketplace has to offer.
The only apps I'm still waiting for are my banking apps (Chase, mainly for depositing checks, and Viber/Skype).
Most of the essentials are catered for. There's Youtube (unofficial ones are better), IMDB, various Twitter clients. You barely need a Facebook app because it's built into the OS.
Games are annoyingly overpriced, and many of the titles I've tried have not been updated for Mango so run at a choppy 30fps. Even Angry Birds is not as smooth as Android or iOS and it's a simple sideways scroller. There are a few great games though, Rise of Glory and Jet Car Stunts are brilliant. Plus some excellent free titles like NinjaBoy.
The apps I miss the most are Google Earth (and Skymap) and there is no native Amazon app anywhere except the US.
Coming from Android background, one thing I find most annoying about Windows Phone is the lack of a true dialer replacement (I believe this is due to OS limitation). I am currently using the paid version of 7Dialer but it does not really replace the default dialer completely. Missed calls are not captured, contacts don't synchronize in real-time, slower launching time and a few other issues.
The same goes with keyboard replacement. Being accustomed to the intelligence of SwiftKey, the built-in Windows Phone keyboard feels very inadequate in comparison.

I agree. I really miss is 3rd party keyboards. I too use Swiftkey on my Android devices. The WP keyboard is too small.
I also miss 3rd party Messaging apps. Need QuickReply
I've been through Android, and I'm on an iPhone now. Just wanan try WP7 because it looks brilliant, but I need apps, and I'm not paying a fiver for sims lol

If games are what you're after, no point switching to the WP, at least for now.
Think I've solved my problem. Gonna get a 3GS as well as have this phone. It looks to brilliant to not have.
Just asking, can you jailbreak the device yet?

Microsoft - no more excuses of Beta apps

I am so displeased with MS. It seems they hide behind all the apps by saying they are beta. WP7.5 was frustrating enough with lack of skype for a year even after they bought it. Between skype and the miserable version of pdf they created one could only wonder how serious they actually are. It would be nice to have an android app so we could have apps that work. Seriously MS stop hiring sweat shop kids to develop your apps and invest in some proper programmers. I don't want a repeat of WP7.5
Yeah, the past couple of days I have seriously considered going back to Android. WP8 is missing some pretty key features that I could ignore if there were apps to fill the holes, there are none... No wifi sync? Unable to "delete" music from Xbox music, even though it's no longer on my device(I used to have Music Pass and the music I downloaded still shows up)? Media volume and Ringtone volume are shared? that seems like a no brainer. The camera, while the overall picture quality is good, I find the colors to be very inaccurate(not WP8, but still a gripe). A lot of my "live tile" apps do not update anymore, maybe the app devs fault? The desktop sync program is almost useless, why can't Zune be used?
So, I am probably gonna try and trade my 920 for an Android... I miss my Nexus

Honestly, I have bought my wife a chinese phone called Oppo. It was slick phone and light, 6mm thick running Android 4.3. I didn't mind android but I perferred the enviroment of 7.5, much cleaner and simpilar. I did not start this poste to talk about Android or Iphone though, I bought a 920 hoping that WP8 was an improvement. But some key apps i use on regular basis created by MS are junk. The point is, if the apps are so much better on other platforms why can't MS do it on theirs especally Skype, come on! I just hope this post opens eyes of MS to begin to deliver a better experience now not in 1 year. On good note, I do give them the respect of Bing Translater the camera feature comes in handy, and people are amazed when i show them.

You can delete music from xbox by pressing on the track long enough then remove it.
It works. It seriously does.

I don't think Microsoft monitors this forum
And I am quite sure people are working very hard to deliver a better experience as fast as they possibly can. You can help too, download the SDK and start coding.

My bad, 4.0 really not a big android guy. I had phone for a week before passing it over to my wife. At least her skype works in background.
To schettj's reply, I am hopping that your optimism is true. I would be closer to doing laundry at my hotel then developing a version of PDF that works. That's what I shelled out 600 bucks for.

Netflix audio out of sync.

My Netflix audio has been out of sync since I first got my G3. My network is fine as Netflix works perfectly on PC, iOS devices, Chrome casts etc. The audio seems about 1 second behind the video. Anyone have a solution or have the same problem?
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Free mobile app
I typically watch on my chromecast, but the few times I have watched on the phone everything has looked good. If you're running ART try switching back to Dalvik. Other than that, try the typical force stop/restart on the netflix app and then a full on reboot. If it's still laggy then I'm out of ideas.
Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I've tried all or them. So far
I'll update if u get it fixed. (and yeah casting is fine for me with my phone because it isn't really my phone doing the playback but rather the actual chromecast)

Maybe its because the image quality is much better than on most other devices that its arriving slower than the audio? That's my best guess. Its not super annoying, the delay is small enough that if you don't pay attention to who is speaking then you cant really tell. But it is noticeable. And if there is a fix that would be awesome.

I have this problem too. Tried downgrading Netflix but no luck. Tried different Roms too and nothing. It's pretty annoying. Funny thing is I don't have these issues with video players or videos streaming from YouTube.
Just found this thread researching this issue. Just got my G3 yesterday day. Everything is still on stock. Anyone notice if other video apps suffer the same problem? I ask because to me it feels like video generally looks a bit like overprocessed motion-interpolated modern tv sets. And if the g3 uses stuff like that it might be related...
