No support for other launchers? - Remix OS for PC

So since I use Nova on my Nexus and my Moto G, tried to install into a remix instance.
While it installed, when I tried to start Nova, I thought I saw a pop-up that said "no support for 3rd party launchers".
It also seemed as if it ignored the play store setting to not add icons to the desktop in the default launcher. That's kind of annoying.
Is there another setting buried somewhere?

https://forum.jide.com/index.php?p=/discussion/198/how-to-get-a-3rd-party-launcher-to-work
$ adb shell
[email protected]:/ $ pm block com.android.launcher3
Package com.android.launcher3 new blocked state: true
[email protected]:/ $ am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN
Starting: Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN }
At this point, an activity selection dialog should pop up, which should list (among other things) the new launcher you installed. Select it, and tap "Always" and Bob's your Uncle.
If you want to re-enable the built in launcher, you can use the adb shell command
pm unblock com.android.launcher3

In remix os for PC this method does not work, I think you cannot use adb towards device you type on and on pre-installed emulator command 'block' is not found.

This works but I believe its disable/enable rather than block/unblock
Well, works-ish... you can switch to nova but there's no wallpaper and no G'now page.

Already had that set; was using the alternative stock launcher/layout - i.e. file mode turned off.
Maybe the remixos.box = false interferes.

What I've done:
1. Installed Nova
2. Opened terminal by alt+f1 (opens as root on default)
3. pm disable com.android.launcher3 --> worked , disabled
3. am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN ---> Starting: Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN }
4. Nova chosen
5. Computer froze, remix did not boot up again, have to re-install

Bummer ?

The gui way to do this would be to freeze Launcher and My Home with something like ROM Toolbox. Then run the Nova/Apex app and it'll become default - I think each launcher will behave differently - Apex seems to behaving properly for now, but the home button (circle) makes the launcher (- wallpaper) appear on top of running apps rather than minimising to 'desktop' == that's the downside of using non-stock launcher.
tl;dr freeze the stock laucher app(s) to use alternative, with stock circle button = home & minimise apps, with custom = launch home on top of apps.

Why not just use android-x86 builds instead if you just want a non-desktop interface

Remix + ZenUI The Perfect Combination
For me Remix is a great concept and makes large screen tablets with keyboards very usable. The notification pane, task bar and the ability to resize windows give Remix the edge on large screen devices. The killer is the lack of desktop widgets.
Having stumbled on the "no third party launcher" problem, I found this (and other) threads which helped no end. With a rooted device by far the simplest solution is to use a tool like TiBu (suggested in other posts) and just freeze Launcher 3 and My Desktop (or whatever that's called). After editing props to get wallpaper up and running, everything worked like a charm - a few extra tweaks to get rid of clashing gestures. Great!
I initially tried Nova - I am a long time user, but the one feature of Remix Launcher I like (no distinction between home and app drawer) is not available in Nova. Having recently acquired a new phone (UMI Super), I have been experimenting with new launchers and came across Zen UI. Nice minimalist launcher that suits my style of use very well. It has a "2 layer" and "1 layer" switch. 1 layer integrates the App Drawer into the home page. It also has smart folders and all sorts of other goodies. I had to tweak some stuff - turn off swipe down search gesture (part of Zen), set Zen to always start full screen. But nothing hard.
One comment - working out how to build folders in "1 layer" mode is a bit hit and miss. In the end I worked out to drag the app through the "app info" area then drop it on a folder to add the app to the folder. Do exactly the same to start a new folder, but drop the app on top of another app - both will then be in the folder.
Don't try and set up a layout in 2 plane mode expecting Zen to copy it as closely as it can when you switch to 1 plane. Zen just starts with a default layout again. Doh.
Now Remix and "1 Plane Zen" gives me the perfect combination. No separate app drawer and widgets on my home screen. And all the great features of Remix. Reaching for Nirvana...

I used the SD Maid technique, used it to freeze the default home app, etc. so far, so good. using Nova launcher Prime at the moment. live wallpaper and all.....

Try Line Launcher. Good oneand is free.

Had desktop like launcher then when I turned it on now it has launcher 3.
How can I get the old default back?

NOVA Launcher Working (method may work for other launchers)

I'm not responsible for any results of your experiments. Proceed at your own risk. Make a backup of your data.
I have Nova working on my PC. Here is a method that will not require root:
1 Install Nova Launcher from Play Store
2 Use command line (Alt-<left arrow>), you should get a black screen with the symbol # and your cursor position
a type: pm disable com.jide.filelauncher and press <ENTER> you should see a confirmation that it is disabled
b type: pm disable com.android.launcher3 and press <ENTER> you should see a confirmation that it is disabled
c type: pm disable com.google.android.launcher.layout.device and press <ENTER> you should see a confirmation that it is disabled
3. Press the Alt<left arrow> to go out of the command line
4 You will be prompted to select Nova Launcher. Be sure to tick the Always button first
5. Go to Settings/Applications and set Nova Launcher to Open in fullscreen mode
To use wallpapers you need to edit the build.prop to set ro.remixos.no_wallpaper to false (root needed)
Performance seems close to expected.
Updated 15/5/2016
Thanks to @HypoTurtle for the help.
So far no wallpaper support. Perhaps someone else has a method?
Edit: working. OP changed
Just putting together a thread to explain this and a few other things. But I noticed in another thread you posted a screenshot with a black background: to resolve that you need ro.remixos.no_wallpaper=false in build.prop
I would also check to make sure that you have nova setup as a full-screen app, that seems to have resolved my overlay error with Apex.

U da MAN! I just used SDMaid to change to full-screen and POW! Wallpaper working!
I tried slightly more complicated way:
Firstly I installed nova.
Then I opened up the terminal by alt + f1, which has a root access by default (no root support terminal that you can found in app drawer) and typed:
pm disable com.android.launcher3 (you should information that the app has been disabled.)
Then:
am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN ,you should get this -> Starting: Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN }
Then I closed the terminal by alt + f7 and chosen Nova as default.
Results: Computer froze and I wasn't able to boot remix back again, had to reinstall. (Just if you want to know, data partition stays where it is so you can re-install it easily)
Any other ideas what code can I use?
Live Wallpaper now working.
After changing desktop grid to 4 across and changing Live Wallpaper:
Scrolling works in app drawer:
Google widget can be seen on the desktop images above. Haven't tested all widgets, but so far they all work as expected.

Taskbar isn't part of the stock launcher, it's part of SystemUI/framework - so it is still there and usable when using a different launcher.

Recent apps annoyance

I'm jot sure if this is a bug or just a huawei thing. When pressing the recent apps button whilst already in an app, on any other phone I have had it brings up the current app first and allows you to scroll through. I have noticed on the mate 20 pro it opens to the 'middle' and app of however many you have open not the app you actually had open at first.
Is there any way to change this?
I think it is defaulting to the app before the one you are currently using? I think it's a good idea. If you are going to recent apps you are usually looking for the last app before the one you are in. If you are on the home screen you will get the last app you used.
I mean lets be honest, if you are in the messenger app for instance, and press recents, unless you want to kill the app, which you won't want to do most of the time, why would you need to see the current app you're already in?
It's a great example of forward thinking by Huawei., such as when you have auto rotate turned off and you turn your phone sideways, it shows a little rotate button on the corner of the navigation keys to let you rotate.
I've noticed that it if you've just unlocked the phone, the first time you press the recent apps button it will alway opens the current app. This is super annoying if you want to doubletap to switch the last app - all it does is flash the app switcher and then bring you back to your current app. Subsequent presses work correctly, but every time you lock and unlock the phone it resets.
What I find annoying is scrolling left to right on the most recent apps.
My G4 & Gemini (admittedly both on Android 7 so not sure if this is an Android 9 or Huawei "feature") both scroll top to bottom which is much more natural IMHO

How to Enable Android Oreo style multitasking cards

Hi Guys,
I've made a video demonstrating how I accidentally enabled the Android Oreo style multitasking cards, pretty cool as I hate the new Android P style.
https://youtu.be/-gra_UFSBGE
the commands is:
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.huawei.android.launcher
Ensure you have another launcher installed and enabled BEFORE removing the stock launcher.
Also note you will loose the stock gestures if you enable it, only the back command works.
So I had to overscan the screen to remove the Nav bar, as using immersive mode broke the lock screen.
Great! By the way, how can I revert back if I ever want to have the Huawei Launcher back?

Yer the only way to revert back is to reset the phone back to factory settings, unless you side load the APK file for the Huawei EMUI 9.0 Launcher (if you save a copy).
But no love lost for me, IMHO it's a crap launcher and multitasking interface...

When using the system gesture navigation mode, It breaks the swipe up and swipe up and hold from the bottom of the screen.
And unfortunately even using the edge gesture application to replace those, it won't allow it, it's somehow blocks it.
The back gestures work tho.
You can use the regular nav bar and then a gesture application and then swipe up works, but enabling immersive mode breaks the lock screen (shows up black with a delay to display the lock screen).
So I use and combination of system gesture mode, for the back command and full screen mode, and edge gestures for the rest (from the sides of the screen), however tap and tap and hold do work on the btm of the screen using edge gestures, just not swipe up as described above.
If anyone can get the swipe up to work that would be greatly appreciated.

You don't need to Uninstall important packages that you might want to re-enable later.
It is possible to just disable them, and keep the files available for easy re-enabling!

* TO DISABLE A PACKAGE (for example the Huawei launcher):

I like the new P multitasking. The old stack multitasking was nightmare. You were able only to switch to the previuos apps since all others were hidden behind. The EMUI 9 implementation is similar to the EMUI 4.1. The only thing that I miss from 4.1 is the long press action on the recent app. In the EMUI 9 task switcher you need to long press the icon which is too small.
The EMUI 4.1 task switcher is maybe the best Android stock switcher.

So is this specific to Mate 20 pro? I'd like to try this on my Honor 8x.

I second that. One Hand Operation+ is awesome. I have been using it on S9+. As an addition I encourage to use other GoodLock apps with the use of NiceLock.

One handed operation app is awesome. I use it too.
What I am looking for, personally, is way to have a similar task switcher like Android 10 default in junction with this. I super hate the 3 button layout but I want the Google feed so I had to swap to a new launcher.
"Vivid NG" app is all you need
So I enabled Onehanded Operation+, and when I set Nova as my default launcher, it still seems to want to use the other navigation buttons along with Onehanded Operation+ . Is there a way to only use Onehanded Operation+ and hide or disable the system navigation?

How To Guide Nova Launcher lock rotation brave toggle desktop-mode (Using Tasker)

Using Tasker to change the default launcher for OPPO FIND N, by canceling Oppo's method to enforce their launcher.
-- Requirements
1- Tasker (paid ~3$).
--- Autoinput (2$), for Brave desktop/phone mode auto switiching.
2- Launcher of your choice.
-- Steps
1- Disable battery optimization(Nova,Tasker).
2- Allow Tasker display over other apps.
3- Run these 4 commands in cmd. (reference).
4- Import feathersCOMPLETE.xml in Tasker.
A-
adb shell pm grant net.dinglisch.android.taskerm android.permission.READ_LOGS
B-
adb shell am force-stop net.dinglisch.android.taskerm
C-
adb shell pm grant net.dinglisch.android.taskerm android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
D-
adb shell cmd package set-home-activity com.teslacoilsw.launcher/com.teslacoilsw.launcher.NovaLauncher
**Note if you choose another launcher replace the package name to yours.
How it works:
- the way this profile works is by reading system log. So, when the system calls for the default launcher, Tasker will auto run your Launcher instead, by this disabling Oppo's (VRR [OTI] Fool-Proof Reset !) Method.
- Another important log called (OplusFoldingAngleManager) which tells the system which state the device is in (folded unfolded). I used it to force rotation lock on all application fixing some issues I had with some apps.
- Brave now can toggle desktop mode on or off depending on device state. (Brave must be open)
List of profiles:
1- FIX APP Back Button (uses log to intercept default launcher).
2- Display Portrait (locks all apps into Portrait mode).
3- Display Landscape (locks all apps into Landscape mode).
4- Brave browser (folded unfolded mode).
*For smooth experience please remove all apps from your default launcher home page first.

Hey I've been watching from the sidelines on a few threads and this seems to work, I'm using Computer Launcher and I get a 4-5 sec delay when I swipe up to go home but it does automatically switch back to Computer Launcher from the stock launcher.
I think this is because I haven't cleaned off my default launcher (it took a lot of time to put apps in folders the way I like it lol) so I wanted to be sure before I did that.
From your experience and testing, do you think the apps on the stock launcher are probably causing the 4-5 sec delay on attempt #2? (When I swipe up for home from inside any app it DOES take me to my new launcher, we are only talking about when I swipe up a 2nd time)
Also TY for this, super thankful we aren't limited to 1 launcher on this awesomeaf phone!
The old method mentioned in the other threads works differently and intercept different log, that's why recent apps was not working.
Using this xml file shouldn't take 4-5 seconds on 2d attempt.
as shown in video. It should be instant.
I only removed apps from home screen for smooth visuals.

So, I tried another launcher and noticed something.
When you try different launchers please remember to run this command again:
adb shell cmd package set-home-activity PACKAGE_NAME
apparently some launchers tries to change default launcher and then oppo's launcher become active and this breaks recent apps.
Yep I went back through all the steps after applying my Launcher just to be safe, probably something dealing with this particular launcher. It works for me though. From any app I can swipe up and go home to my Launcher so I'm good. I rarely swipe up for home while I'm already on my home screen so for all practical purposes this works for me!
Also recents work just fine.
Whats about the battery life with this method?

I didn't compare before and after.
I've been using this for 4 or 5 days now, maybe someone could provide a comparison.

Same to me, 4/5 seconds and I don't have any widget in HP
Yea the delay doesn't have anything to do with the icons on the stock launcher, but hey I can deal with it...it's the best we've got right now so for sure no complaints. This looks to be the only way to consistently get a new launcher to stick to default.

what launcher are you using?
please double check Package-Name both in ADB command and "Choose Default Launcher" in Tasker.
I can confirm that with this XML file there is no delay whatsoever. please make sure that you have done the steps correctly and report back.

Just go to the Developer Options and Set "Disable permission monitoring" to active. Then try again.

Can someone explain how to changed to nova launcher step by step, i didnt used Tasker ever and i cant add the xml file to it, why?
Is nova launcher working with navigation buttons?
Hi Kaled44
Really nice tricks. Works very good - except that - if on my new launchers homescreen I swipe up, I will end up with the Oppo Launcher. Any hint whats missing?

Did not work. Same behaviour. There must be a setting that keeps the swipe up for the default launcher
Well I was trying couple of days ago with no successes, but now it's working like a charm.
Honestly I don't know what I did correctly
But this xml file is working for me.
