questions related local variant - Honor 5X Questions & Answers

hey every one , i got my device two weeks ago , i bought it in egypt and sells as huawei GR5. no honor branding on box or the back of the device . i assumed at first that both devices are identical and the only difference is branding name .
but i noticed on multiple occasion that the device is strangely slow specially compared to youtube videos and benchmarks . and its number is kII-l21 not kw-l21 . also the cpu doesn't seem to be 616 .
so i was wondering if this device would receive marshmallow update ? can i use custom roms in the future that is devolped for US devices ?

Here in my country, we have two seperate phones, one going as honor 5x and other gr5, so they're both definitely different...
Also that antutu is less than typical 5x which gets around 38k

I live in Pakistan.... And i also was baffled by the choice between gr5 and 5x.... I made the choice based on the model number on the back of the box... I knew i should go for kiw L21....
Sent from my KIW-L21 using Tapatalk

I just looked at the GR5 in Huawei store in fortune town bangkok, it has the 616 chipset as confirmed by staff & on device spec details, looks pretty much same besides some radio frequency difference, solid device for 8,150Baht (lowest price I found) but 8,450 is more common pricing. Camera seemed ok from testing in shop, it had 5.1.1 android so had an update which may have some huawei software optimisation !
Fingerprint sensor is very good & also enables easy opening & closing of notifications when unlocked & control panel when on lock screen which useful idea, has double tap to wake too .

Bought gr5 (KII-L21) on 13 march ( just 5 days for now) by trusting gsmarena, now confused if this won't compatible with developments for 5X (KIW series)
Can anyone please confirm will it be compatible or not?
And
Where can I find the actual deferences between the two models?

I doubt kiw developments will be direct compatible, some tweaks may be but roms etc will need tweaking for kii. kiw certainly going be better unofficial supported device ...

I think the answer is: no. The Mate 2 has different hardware, it's like you ask: "Can we make a ROM from the Samsung Galaxy S5 stock ROM?"

hardware drivers have be present in the rom. otherwise by switching the kernel you could run anny rom you would like htc sense for instance

The reason for the Sense 6 rom on Nexus 5 is HTCs Sense is now just apks instead of being a full shell and theme written into the core of their OS. They just ported the apps over and installed them on a custom rom.
If I'm not wrong it has d same 3.0.8 kernel as mate 1

Ok, I tell something for clearance: this rom is an AOSP rom, with ported apps, it's not the original sense 6, just looks like. If we want KitKat (Android 4.4) we will need a kernel for it, but we haven't kernel, because Huawei don't released it (yet). Writing a kernel from nothing is hard, and closely never can be successful, so I think it takes a long time for us to have KitKat. P6 roms can be ported, because the 2 phones have closely exactly same hardware, but we can't use the P6's 4.4 roms, because we don't have the kernel for it. So hope that Huawei release a KitKat kernel for our phablet, but it's closely impossible.
Edit: we can make Android 4.4, but some functions won't work, so it's close to useless.
Actually the only thing we need is a kernel source to switch touchscreen drivers.

Not only kernel. Mate uses different SOC than Mate2 which means it uses different media drivers (stagefright, mediacodecs) , it has different GPU , so graphics part is different , different modem (I think , because of different soc and 4G) so ril part id different . I did not found the wifi and BT chip and GPS chip type . For me it seems the only common part is the name of device. Maybe the display modul is the same chimei 6.1" lcd .
If you speak about P6's kitkat we have to change touch driver in kernel , lcd driver in kernel , also the audio hal is not correct for HAM in P6 KK rom.
Hahahaha.....my doubt is solved...

Honor 5x and gr5 isnthe exact same but honor 5x has one model with 3gb RAM and honor 5x has the marshmallow beta but not the gr5
I have a GR5
marshmallow is on the way but slowly as always from huawei, will be much the same crappy software anyway .
Not bad device hardware for $ but ruined by shoddy software much same as all on android OS .
When I look at email & message technical options, quality call block software like magicall & sound qaulity of my default audio player via headset on 7 year old WM6.5.5 I am appalled at this modern android platform & app junk .

What issues ? If you know of problems you should help the developer and submit logs so they can be addressed. It (CM13) works fine on all versions of the 5X.

Should i get the honor 5x??

I'm thinking of buying the honor 5x... It is of 280$ in my country.... Should i go for it, or is there any other phone in this price range i should consider....
One of my main concerns would be if this phone will get custom roms..... I will most likely get the L21 ver.....
Sent from my QMobile S3 using Tapatalk
I don't know what country you're in and if the prices for other devices are inflated too. I would not pay $280USD for this device however, that's more than the retail price.
I think this phone will get custom roms, but whether it will get official CyanogenMod support is a different story.
Any OnePlus device will perform better and have better camera than the Honor 5X. I had the OnePlus X before this, which is generally better, but I bought the Honor 5X just to try something different, and it have better battery life, bigger screen, and the finger print reader.. I also had the OnePlus One which had a very nice camera and good battery life.
Other phone to consider is the Alcatel Idol 3, which is about the same specs as the Honor 5X but smaller screen. There is the new Idol 4 as well.
Also the Nexus 6 is a good consideration.

Thnx for the reply..... Not only prices are inflated in my country, many phones are not available at all.. One plus x and the idol 3 aren't available in my country, i can get a used one plus one for 250$.... But i really don't wanna go for a used option....
Also i know that the l24 model will get custom roms... I was talking specifically for the L21 model..
Will this model get roms apart from cm?? Like aokp etc??

Android 7.0?

I see android n was released today. aside from custom roms do you think theres a chance the 5x will get it officially?
Maybe, but not anytime soon, I don't think. Even with the XDA partnership with Honor, I'll say at least 3 months.

i think it would take time,huawei/honor has always been behind others considering updates.
lets see if partenship with xda makes any difference.
I dont think so we wait CM or other Custom Rom .....Huawei very late when to update ...
i would say yes. Nougat was will be the last update most probably this phone could get. It has everything it needs to support android N and moreover it was launched this year... So there are good chances that we will get android 7.

EMUI, at least two months.....a custom ROM, probably a month at max
Depends on your region. If you are in L21, L22 and L24 version you are likely to get it. And remember that this may be the last update which you will get.
The Honor 4x which came with KitKat is now running on MM. So hopefully Honor will update its devices atleast till 2 increments.

Planing to buy Mate 10 64gb, few questions before I do it

Hello Guys,
I’m considering buying Huawei 10 (NOT Pro), but since it’s not officially available in the countries I spend most my time in (Poland and UK), I’ll have to get it from Chinese shop. Having said that, I have my concerns and I’d be glad if you could walk me through them. My apologies if some on those questions were already answered, but some of the feedback I’ve gather from this forum come from the “early days” of this phone and I don’t know if they are still valid. Let’s get to it:
1) Is the system in Polish language? It might be under “(…) and many more languages” but I’d like to know
2) I should be looking for version L29, correct? Are those “international” versions on sites like https://www.giztop.com/huawei-mate-10.html really international, or just Chinese ones with switched software?
3) My current phone is Oneplus 3 – and I admire the simplicity of almost-stock Android. How much off a detour is MIUI in comparison? Will I have to deal with a lot of bloating in the system?
4) Since there won’t be a version for “big” markets like US and UK – could there be any issues with updates? Will Huawei abandon the support for international version anytime soon – speculatively speaking? Or is it possible for them to introduce this phone to US/UK/PL, but later?
5) I’d be taking 4gb 64gb version, but I’ve been using 6gb phone for a while now – will this “downgrade” be visible in daily use?
6) I’ve seen some complaints about the camera. I understand it’s not “perfect”, but right now I’m using oneplus3+g.cam port from Pixel 2 – so I should still experience a bump in quality, right?
7) I want to buy it from this site https://www.giztop.com/huawei-mate-10.html. Is there any reason I should pick a different one/wait?
Thank you for all your future answers, and apologies for a longer post.
Cheers!
I'm in a similar situation. I'm planning to buy from eBay the international version. The sellers there are based in either France or Ireland, they say they give you a year warranty but crucially you have PayPal protection.
I've seen other sites where a minority of phones never turn up or are broken and it's incredibly hard to get the money back.

1 - I don't know for sure but it should be there !
2 - Yes L29 is the version you should look for ! You can get one from here https://www.ebay.fr/itm/NEUF-HUAWEI...234857?hash=item4b2e0e4729:g:41oAAOSwytJaE9rW that's where I got one for my uncle
3 - EMUI is very customised version of Android but with big possibilities for themes so you should be able to make it look as you want
4 - We can't be sure of anything in that domain ^^ I just left Samsung because of giving update slowly... But for sure as the flagship of the brand it should get update faster than others
5 - It'll not. Some may not agree with me but 4gb of Ram is largely enough today !
6 - As I'm not a professionnal I could not tell ^^ but for sure Mate 10 camera is amazing and will only improve with software update improving AI
7 - As I answered on 2, you can get it from dwi on ebay, I've took 2 phones from them (S7 dual sim and Huawei Mate 10)
I live in the UK and I bought the L29 version, it works fine and you can select the system language when you setup the phone. The only issue I found is HiCloud wouldn't work but I rebranded to the L09 version and everything works
To answer your point 6
I'm also using a ported version of the camera app on my previous phone which is a Xiaomi Mix and the phone is notorious for its very poor camera lens.
It surprises me totally what software can achieve where the hardware fails at.
Even on the ****ty camera, the software managed to capture IMO equal or more details as compared to M10 on the pro mode.
So at the end of the day. Your OP3 having a better lens than the Xiaomi Mix should experience probably equal or maybe seeing a 5 to 10% bump in details.
If there's ever a chance that M10 could have the ported camera from Pixel on our phone I'll definitely be a very happy man.
Hi jay. I too live in the UK and planning the buy the L29. Was the re branding just to get the hicloud? Or were there other features?
Thanks

Yeah it was just so I could use HiCloud, didn't feel like a fully functional phone without it

To answer your point 6
I'm also using a ported version of the camera app on my previous phone which is a Xiaomi Mix and the phone is notorious for its very poor camera lens.
It surprises me totally what software can achieve where the hardware fails at.

Here you go my friend : https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/googl...amera-5-1-016-174405463-android-apk-download/
It's working on my Mate 10 Pro, imo it gives a little bit less blurriness and the photo is clearer in overall, sadly it lacks some features for our phone
Give us some results about photo quality please
Regards,
Safe

Thanks for the link. I'm not referring to the stock Google camera but the exact one on the pixel phone.
https://www.google.com.sg/amp/s/www...gle-camera-hdr-customization-raw-support/amp/
It is the HDR+ that makes all the difference but sadly Google only enables it for the Pixel phone.
Hey sorry to jack this thread but whats the drawbacks of the Chinese version, bloat ware?? And wouldn't it get updates faster?
Also, wouldn't it be a better idea to buy the AL00.. 128 GB, 6 GB RAM Chinese Mate 10 version if you wanted to keep that 6GB of ram?
I just killed my HTC 10 with water so I'm thinking upgrading to the 6GB ram version would be a better move coming from 4GB. I just wish it wasn't so expensive lol 4GB international version is about $800 CND on ebay..

id like to know this too, also:
so which Huawei Mate 10 Pro 128gb version are you supposed to buy? there's L29 on ebay, L09 on clove uk website. handtec uk HM10P128TG, what's the difference between all of these? dual sim on amazon uk 128gb. L29 on wondamobile international version.
eglobal uk CN version. eglobal prices vary for 128gb version, why is that?
sorry so many questions!
essentially i'd want to root and custom rom, is there really dev support for this, I'm coming from samsung and devs have been a lot etc. im over samsung note series lol...
thx
Does anybody knows any store in USA that have Mate 10? My friend is traveling, at Orlando right now and he will bring to me. I don't know how customs works at USA so I think it's not a good idea to buy at Chinese sites

Well that's the Mate 10 Pro, not the Mate 10, the Pro does not have an SD card slot. I don't know what the CN is but the L29 I had was for the Singapore market, so Huawei Cloud didn't work until I flashed the L09 Firmware

yeah I noticed it's the pro, tbh I wanted the finger scanner on the back. I'm going from a lifetime of sd card to no sd card. feel like I'd need a tutorial on how to go about that and backing up consistently lol....
think I can get away with no SD card
so how come they list an item with no model number?
also can you change the soft key buttons placements? move them into opposite spots etc lol?
