Can't get Boost APNs to stick - E 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone is the Boost Mobile XT1526. Running Cyanogenmod 13 by squid2. The latest build.
I've been using the Boost APN found here, and even though it works, its not ideal. I'd rather use the APN that's built into the ROM or the APN I pulled from the stock ROM.
My problem is that, for the life of me, I absolutely cannot get the APNs to stick. The APN that's built into CM13, doesn't stick. It disappears. And if I manually add the APN I pulled from the stock ROM, that disappears as soon as I hit save. I have no clue why. The only APN I can use is the one I linked to above. But that one isn't ideal. But I'll use it if I have to.
Can anyone help me with this that knows more about this then I do? I'd really love to use either the built-in APN or the APN I pulled from the stock ROM, if its even possible.
I have data so that's not my problem. I just can't send or receive MMS messages using the SMS app in Cyanogenmod.
Thanks!
If anything isn't clear then please tell me and I'll try to explain better. I suck at explaining.

Trying to get it to work too!
I'm having the exact same problems. I think it might be an issue with cellular network settings in CM13/MM roms (you'll notice clicking "Carrier Settings" in any of them causes com.android.phone to stop).
I've been playing around with various things, and I've found so far that using the Cypher rom (which doesn't have any Boost stuff baked in) I can put in the APN settings you linked to and send and receive MMS but LTE doesn't work. I then went back to Squid's CM13 rom (which is amazing, btw!) and LTE appears from install but changing any APN setting makes it fall over. Then I tried editing the Boost APN in deega/Buzbee2's flashable zip from "n.boost.ispsn" to "Boost_Mobile". I could flash that, and that does make it "stick" in the APN settings but, again, LTE disappears when I do this. Entries under the "Access Point Names" tab do seem to appear and disappear somewhat randomly whatever I do!
I've tried various other fixes suggested online, from root-deleting the telephony database to trying some SMS programs that let you put in the APN settings manually, but still nothing. I feel I'm close...but not that close I'll keep fiddling and see what happens but I'm not entirely sure whether this is a settings issue or a CM13 issue.

Thanks for replying. I'm gonna do some testing too. I had the same exact issue on CM12.1 so I don't think its a CM13 issue.
I wonder if there's a way to use adb or fastboot to force the APNs to stick?
I tried using the Boost APN I pulled from the stock ROM that Motorola or Boost put there and you'd think it'll work but no. It disappears as soon as I hit save.
I know CM13 has to be using some kind of APN because I have data, but I don't know what that APN is nor why I can't get the SMS app to use it so I can send MMS messages.
I'm confused but I'll figure it out. Maybe. :/
EDIT: I notice too that whenever I tried to get into Network Operators that com.android.phone would FC. I was able to get in there by putting my phone in airplane mode and rebooting. I can take the phone out of airplane mode while I'm in it without it force closing. But I'm not able to do anything. Kept saying "error while searching for networks" or something along those lines. So I just gave up for right now.
EDIT2: I noticed that in the file /data/data/com.android.settings/shared_prefs/com.android.settings_preferences.xml that it had APN settings in there that were blank for the most part. I tried editing that file to add my APN settings but it didn't help.

I've been testing things during the day and my hunch is there's a deeper problem with the LTE implementation in the 6.x roms (and earlier, perhaps, if you had issues with CM12 as well). It's difficult to know if this is Boost/Sprint related only - Buzbee2's flashable fix seems to be working for people on Freedompop and Virgin. I had a few issues today where my phone would be telling me I had LTE connectivity but web pages would give timing-out errors. I switched to Cypher which was solid on 3G where LTE had basically crashed. I sent MMS with manually inputted settings on Cypher again.
So I was left feeling that at the moment it's a choice between fast (patchy?) LTE speeds without MMS or solid (slow!) 3G with MMS. Hmm. It may be that current roms have a issue switching down and up between LTE and 3G...?
Looking at deega/Buzbee2's flashable zip it doesn't seem like it changes much, so it should be a settings issue, just as long as those settings can stick! Trouble is there might be multiple points of failure at present.
I dug up an interesting thread on the Moto G forum where a user who struggled with this on their phone found that Boost requires authentication for MMS over LTE but not on 3G:
Getting MMS to work on LTE made me pull my hair out. Virgin mobile(Boost) working on Sprint networks when it comes to MMS messages is an over complicated issue caused by the providers. When attempting to receive MMS on LTE networks with stock MMS or some 3rd party MMS apps it returns with a "HTTP error: Authorization Required". When trying it on 3G its no problem. Seems they required "Authorization" for MMS on LTE but not 3G - go figure. Hangouts basically works for all because the app itself doesn't use the phones APN settings. It tries (and does) to attain what carrier you are on and use its settings. In our case it will identify you are on the Sprint network and use those APN settings. Why don't we set our phones to the Sprint settings?...no LTE then.

Sounds eerily similar, but his fix file has disappeared into the mists of time and seems to have only worked on certain roms. Anyway, I'll keep digging and hope others might chip in.

I found a file called preferred-apn.xml in the data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/shared_prefs directory where you can set a preferred APN. Least I'm assuming that's what its for. But I need the APN id and I can't find the id for the built-in Boost APN.
I'll keep looking and testing stuff. Hopefully we can get this figured out.
I'm stuck with using 3G where I live. Boost/Sprint doesn't have LTE where I live. So LTE isn't a issue for me.

That's a good find. I think the APN ID refers to the line where you can find the details for the APN in the telephony database. There's some stuff on the Moto G forum about it here.
I'm guessing that the APN settings tab is pulling stuff from the telephony db and that your XML file is telling the phone which is the default. If so, maybe writing to the telephony.db (in the databases folder just along from shared_prefs) might make changes "stick", although if you delete that db it's recreated at reboot so it's not the originator of the data. My feeling is that there's a screwy connection between telephony.db and various other bits of CM13 right now...
Maybe taking telephony.db from a stock Boost rom and copying that in will do something.

I still have a backup of the stock ROM on my laptop. Tomorrow I'll pull the telephony.db and copy it onto my phone replacing the original one and see what happens.

Update:
I pulled the telephony.db from the stock ROM and copied it to my phone, replacing the original and I set the APNs in apns.xml to what I thought the APN should be. I wouldn't recommend it.
As soon as I rebooted CM13 stopped recognizing my sim card and the com.android.phone error popped up and wouldn't disappear. I couldn't do anything. Had no choice but to reboot into twrp and use its file manager to delete the db file. So that's a no go I guess.
I found a program for Linux (also available for Windows) called SQLiteBrowser which let's me open the telephony.db files and look through them. All of the APN IDs are stored in that db file. I'm going to use it to look through the telephony.db file for CM13 and get the APN IDs that I need. Then try to edit the preferred_apns.xml file to set it and see what happens.
EDIT: I'm looking through the telephony.db file from CM13 but there are no APNs in it for some odd reason. Wonder if we can manually add them if need be?

Finally working for me
Buzbee2 made some suggestions on his support thread so I tried them and - to my amazement - everything worked. Not immediately, I had to wait a few hours (for the APNs to be picked up from Boost?) but it did work.
So what I did was first go into airplane mode and entered the Boost_Mobile APN details that you can find everywhere online (and on Buzbee's support thread). When I switched off airplane mode those settings disappeared and those baked into Squid's CM13 (or flashed via Buzbee's zip) came back. Switched on airplane mode again, those disappeared and the Boost_Mobile one I entered and saved is there. I can't believe that's meant to happen, but there it is.
I then downloaded Google Hangouts. I'd heard it sorts out its own APN settings if you set it to be your default SMS program. I could send SMS through Hangouts but still no MMS. I gave up at this point as I had to go out.
Checked my phone a couple of hours later and my MMS sent via Hangouts had arrived. I tried a few more and they all worked. Then I tried the stock messaging app and that could send MMS too! I couldn't believe it. I uninstalled Hangouts (much prefer the simpler app) and went to bed. In the morning, no MMS. Reinstalled Hangouts, still no good. Left it a few hours and - yep! - MMS was back for all my MMS apps. I tested with and without wi-fi, knowing that Hangouts likes shortcuts , and it was all good.
So the moral of the story is...I have no idea. But either Hangouts sets the APNs for the whole rom, or some combination of the Boost_Mobile APN (even though it doesn't "stick") and Hangouts gets it going. Maybe set that up, leave it overnight, and see. It doesn't explain some of the weirdness in the carrier settings, but at least it might work.

I'll try that. ☺

Any luck, Debdude? My phone has not been perfect, with it refusing to switch down to 3G when out of LTE coverage, and MMS mostly sending but sometimes not, but acceptable for something running a cutting-edge rom. It'll hopefully improve as things mature.

Damn. I forgot. My bad. I got busy with my new laptop and my ps2 I just completely forgot about this.
I'll mess around with it in a bit. And try the suggestions you mentioned a couple posts back.

[Q] [SOLVED] Data connection not working and no APNs

Hi all,
I've been trying different builds for a couple of weeks by now and they all have a similar blocker problem for me: data connection does not work. The list of APNs is empty and when I try to add one, it is saved but not displayed. I tried googling the problem and found some advice to play with MNC and MCC but this didn't seem to help. Any other clues? I am ready to look into the log files and even C/Java code to help fixing this if someone can explain where to look and how to get started..
EDIT: also tried flashing different radios - no luck. Everything is ok on WinMo, the device is T-Mobile RHOD210.
EDIT: solved by replacing the SIM card (see post 25 in the thread)
Does your carrier require a proxy?
Also, what do you mean when you add an APN it's saved but not displayed...? That sounds like an issue to me.
Does this happen with all builds? Lots of stuff flying around nowadays, I'd be interested to hear if it works with vanilla FRX03 (which for most data works out of the box, but not all...)
No, it does not require a proxy - just 'internet' as APN name and that's it. The MCC and MNC values are 250 and 02 respectively (as I found from Android forums).
In terms of APNs - here is what I do:
- go to APN list
- click Menu
- click New APN
- enter name=Megafon, apn = internet, mcc = 250, mnc = 02
- save it
- and it throws me back to the empty list
The weirdest thing is that there were a couple of times when it booted and worked fine with APNs and data connection (it seems it pulled APNs from the network) - but the UI was extremely slow then, it took seconds for a button to respond to touch. It was FRX03 and I don't know how to repeat that.
Now it is FRX03 and same problem - no APNs, no data.
I just format the card and start fresh.
At least try a new data.img - data should work out of the box... The slowness was probably due to the system_server bug - make a call to voicemail, it'll disappear.

I do try with a fresh data.img all the times, so this alone doesn't seem to help. But I will try with a formatted SD card, mine one is quite full of stuff, thanks. And I wish I could repeat the slowness problem - it had data working when it was slow, but most of the time everything is fast but no data at all.
I've got exactly the same Problem with every ROM i used on my rhod100_de. In most cases data works but after some reboots my data connection stops working. Radio is OK, i can make calls but no Data, no APN and if i enter one it disappears. I started debugging the issue on FRX04. First thing: I had to connect to 3G-data in WiMo before booting android to get stable data in Android. I used it as usual until data disappears - after removing data.img data was back, so im pretty sure this is a problem in userspace, most likely related to my settings/apps.
Im currently testing my apps/settings, maybe i can narrow the problem. Things i currently suspect: Twidroyd/Remapping EndCall/Power-Widget.
Does the Menu => Reset Defaults option work to bring back one APN?
I was just doing some testing and it appears that entering anything except the default MNC wil result in the APN being removed.

In APNs? No - the settings are in the database, if i use other tools to dump all APNs the ones i added are currectly listed. I guess the system does not correctly detect the MCC/MNC and ignores my settings.
Does anyone know a tool/menu to show the MCC/MNC that the system (thinks) is associated to?
I actually thought I was stupid today(I still think I"m doing somethign wrong) First time booting to haret.exe on froyo x 01/28 and got into android. I try to set my apn for Fido in Canada and every detail and I can't see a saved apn at the moment. I have a HTC Tilt 2. Any help is appreciated.
I have to set the mcc and mnc. I can't get a saved apn(only black screen on apn) Am I doing something wrong? I have been on this for 2 hours now, I'm scratching my head cause I can't dial a call out at the moment. Someone enlighten me. Should I be able to dial a call without setting apn ?
Have you disabled the sim pin lock?

Ok tried re-formatting the SD card and it's still the same. Sometimes data connection works but most of times it doesn't - same issues as aichemist describes. Also ready to help debugging this.

I actually suspect my SIM/Operator - will try with a different SIM card.
I have the same problem. No APNs can be created... the list remains always empty... Would love to use android on my rhod100, but without 3g it's rather useless...

Yes - Calls should work without any APN as long as no PIN is set and you have force_cdma=0 in your startup.txt. I never had any problems with voice so far on rhod100_de...
yeah, voice and sms works like a charm... only 3g is missing mostly.
Tried with a different SIM card and it seems better - at least it entered the 'slow but 3g works' mode from the first attempt. I will try to replace my SIM at my operator's office (I have one back to 2001) and let's see what happens.

I thought it's only me having this issue..anyway i've been trying different builds also before, some builds were ok with the apn n' data connection but now even i tried to install those working builds..connection can't be establish..for almost a week now my concerned is to used data internet..lol for i'm so desperate of installing working builds whom i i used to know thats working i just want 3G to work..but nothing...if only my memory card can talk i'm sure it's tired of being reformatted every now and then..
Ok, even tho this should work out of the box, you might have to create the APN manually...
Everyone has tried that and it STILL doesn't work? I've had to do it before, not sure why it works automatically sometimes and others doesn't work at all until I add the APN... Always works after I add the APN tho .

[Q] (Q) Data connection is gone after firmware flashing - How to fix??

I'll try to make this post as short as possible while still including all the details. I own an unlocked samsung galaxy s 2 in the US and have ATT as my provider.
After flashing different ROMs and firmware (exynos, lite'ning, cognition and the chainfire version of my firmware to be exact), my data connection is gone. I wrestled with it yesterday to no avail, because in the end my "Mobile network state" is always disconnected. Today, however, I changed the apn settings to the old ATT "wap" settings and the internet was restored. The speeds were somewhat slow, but i didn't care so long as they remained functioning. About two hours later - the connection crapped out. Oh, and I should also mention - I got a new sim card from ATT today assuming that my issue was a messed up and card from flashing too many roms with it still inside. Needless to say, that didn't work.
So, I'm here now attempting all sorts of remedies with no luck. ATM I am on cog 5.1 with the "correct" apn settings found here on xda, which hasn't worked either.
Has anyone else has this issue of losing their data connection altogether (although keeping wifi)? Does anyone have suggestions that might bring the data back to life?
Thanks!

what correct* apn settings are you using?
I'm using "phone" for the APN and leaving the rest blank (with the exception of APN type, which is internet).
Just minutes ago I reset to default APNs one more time to see if it would work, but nothing. I'll try the wap.cingular APN now to see if it at least picks up some data.

If you are still ' Rom hunting' as such, it is always a good idea to use program like apn manager so you dont have to manually enter your settings after every flash.
As my provider has nearly every field full, it can be a very timely exercise every time you change roms - lets face it, it can take some time to find the one we love

Those settings, wherever they're from, WORK. I had memorized the other common one already, so as soon as I saw the differences in yours I knew it would work. Unfortunately, I (literally) couldn't thank you enough for it.
Is that apn yours personally or just dug up from elsewhere here on XDA? I'm hoping it stands the test of time and continues to work after tonight... The speeds are all over the place for some reason, but at this point it doesn't matter to me, I'm just glad I don't need a WIFI connection at all times.
Oh, and the APN manager is downloading as we speak - good call. I've followed DG's from when I had my captivate a while back, so I'm gonna continue testing Cognition out for a little longer. Maybe like another day - then back to flashing =)

[Q] MMS Problems

Seem to be having them on every ROM i try.
APN Settings are correct. They're automatically retrieved when installing a new ROM.
I'm on O2.
I have tried Stock messaging APP, GO SMS Etc.

Have you tried other ICS ROMS?
What network re you both on?
Maybe a dumb question, but have you tried sending to several would-be recipients?
I ask because I had the same problem - all ROMs, all kernels - a few weeks back, or so I thought. But the problem was with my wife's phone, not mine.
Took me about 40 attempts before I thought of trying someone else...
Tried Wanams 10.4 ROM. It seemed to send earlier. Then after ive set my phone up.I tested again, and it gave me the.
Unfortunately messaging has stopped
Error again.!?

Yeah, just tried sending one to myself. No-go.
I had the same issues you have, but a mate of mine who works as an O2 Guru helped me sort it out
I now have only 2 APNs, just the ones I need, as I deleted all the others myself (you probably don't have to do this yourself)
You need one for internet/3G access, and one for MMS:
Internet APN (jpg image)
MMS APN (jpg image)
Passwords should be "password" if I remember correctly
These are O2 postpay/contract settings btw, not pay as you go, those might be different.
Also, screenshots were taken on CM9, so some of the settings (like APN type) may look different. The Internet APN's type should just be Internet and the MMS APN's type should be just MMS.
According to my mate you also have to do a battery pull after saving the APN settings, but I just rebooted.
Also just to make sure you're not as dumb as I was, make sure your mobile data is turned on
I wondering for ages why my MMS wouldn't work until I was told I needed mobile data on

Seems to have worked!
Ive also entered the MMSC settings into GOSMS app. There is an area under the MMS bit on GOSMS.

[Q] APN Settings Via Shell

I know there is a lot of questions surrounding APN settings and I have done a lot of research and can't seem to find a solution to my problem. Background I am running a XT908 which appears to be a very close cousin or brother or sister (choose your family member) to the XT912. It is a CDMA phone from a small local carrier. Anyway I have CM 10.1 on it, working great frankly I love it, however like many small carriers getting the APN settings restored is a real pain.
So the real issue is when I goto Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks, there is no option for Access Point Names. This is true both on CM 10.1, AND the stock ROM which was ICS 4.0.4. So the data on my phone is working, however I can't send MMS messages (it just sits at sending). I presume the problem is the APN, I'm not sure if it is simply using Verizon's and it is working because Verizon runs off the local carriers towers or what.
Anyway, is there a way to modify the active APN setting(s) via the ADB shell. I've been doing a lot of playing around with the apns-conf.xml, and the telephony.db database located in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db. I attempted to restore my APN config by installing APN Backup & Restore, making it a System App, dumping the APNs on the stock ROM, and then restoring them on CM10. This did import some of the settings (although the database fields don't match up exactly), however I still have the MMS problem.
So I guess I just wrote a long winded explanation to ask, is there a file or database I can modify with my local carriers settings and make it the active APN? Or is my APN not even the issue since data is working fine, it is MMS only? Thanks much.
Going to try and bump one time.

[Q] 4G connection issue

I am unable to get reliable data on my CM11 rom on my razr maxx. I have checked all the network setting with a friend's whos is working and there are two differences:
1. His APN is grayed out
2. I do not get a "pass" on HTTP client test when I go into #*#*4636*#*#
When I fire up the phone it connects at 3G. It then takes about 10 minutes to go to LTE. When it does, it is DOG slow.
I also have the same issue with CM11 roms on my Incredible 4G LTE. It was thinking it was the sim, but it works fine on a stock rom. I have seen other folks with similar issues, but no resolution.

Brilliant! Fixed.
I did have to change the permissions on the APN app before moving it. After restoring the APN's from stock, I did have to go in an select the appropriate one.
Follow-Up
After about a day of use, this stopped working. This morning, I was unable to connect via LTE. If I chose an appropriate APN, it would not stay selected (if I went back into APN's after making a change it would be set to something else).
What I did to fix this was to use APN Backup and Restore to delete all the APN's and then restore ONLY the APN's from the stock ROM. So far, it is working.

More Follow-Up
It looks like the APN's get jacked when I use WIFI. Any thoughts?
Probable Fix - By ME! (CDMA ONLY - XT912)
This is what I did to fix the issue. It doesn't just fix the LTE, but the entire connection overall. (Atleast for me, please leave a follow up if you try this).

First things first, goto your APN settings (System Settings > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names)
1) Delete all existing APNs. (tap the APN to enter configuration, open menu and delete the APN.
2) Create a new APN.

I tried this and it worked. Basically it is stealing the stock APN.

I just tried this in an attempt to resolve my LTE connection issues and APN issues with CM11. Rebooted the phone and it quickly connected to 4G LTE. Will let you know if it doesn't work. Verizon XT912 user in California.

I have been having issues connecting to the LTE network. Right now, there is no solution. I have tried almost everything. I have even tired flashing back to stock with RSD Lite. I made sure that it wasn't the SIM card (i have had issues with the SIM before on a different phone) by putting it in a different/newer 4G LTE device and it connected to 4G LTE with no problem. My RAZR will connect to 4G LTE when I am in certain areas, but the connection isn't a lasting one. It will quickly switch back to 3G. I contacted Verizon Wireless and even took it into a store. They told me that it's the upgrades that they're doing to the network. While the customer service representative said that my model of the RAZR was just outdated and is probably experiencing hardware issues. My solution used to work, but now it's something else. (Hardware or Network related). My suggestion would be to contact Verizon about the issue (revert to stock first; if you need a link as to how to do that, PM me and I will help point you in the right direction.)

I am currently testing a solution. Will report back.

Have you tried APN Backup and Restore on CM 11? There are some other flashable fixes as well that I have seen. APN Backup and Restore has worked a few times but I have to do it after every restart.

I haven't. BUT I'm running on my stock ROM right now. And it's having trouble connecting. I have to restart just to get 4G. And it lasts for a few seconds and then (in the *#*#4636#*#* testing menu) the signal strength turns all weird (I'll provide the number of dBm later when it comes back). Then goes straight to 3G and no matter how hard I try, it won't switch back to 4G unless I restart. I think it could have something to do with the radio (well obviously it is). But something serious that we can't fix unless we have an unlocked bootloader. If frickin' Motorola would let us unlock the device, then we'd be golden.
