for some time now i'm planning to get my first android phone. atrix was my first favourite, but it's pretty expensive. in the meantime, google nexus s caught my eye, and i've been trying to find it, but it's almost impossible to find in my country. so, i decided to save some more money and go for atrix. reading a lot about it on the internet, i have some concerns.
1.) i've been reading a lot of opinions that atrix, despite its impressive hardware, often lags, has a lot of bugs; all in all that user experience is not smooth as it should be with phone this powerful. i'd like to hear your opinions.
2.) how is battery life? would it last a whole day with this scenario: brightnes on max, 1 hour wi-fi, 5-10 minutes talk, 30 minutes gaming/using apps, half an hour reading, watching one movie.
3.) is blur ui really that awful? i see a lot of people complaining about it. is it removed from custom roms?
4.) what actions cause phone brick? i've red that downgrading an os causes bricking, so it means if i install custom ics rom, and don't like it, i'll be stuck with it because i can't roll back to stock gingerbread or i'll brick my phone?
5.) coming from WM, i've seen a lot of compatibility problems with apps/games. how is the situation here? will atrix run every (or almost every) app/game?
6.) how does it cope with demanding games like shadowgun, backstab, nova...?
7.) can rooting cause any problems?
8.) anything else, you'd like to add.

Im very happy with my Atrix. After installing custom roms, the perfomance bumps A LOT. Im using Nottachtrix 4G right now, and my phone is flying.
1.) I believe that it's not as bad as people say, things got better with GB, and really it's just the launcher that's laggy, which can be replaced easily through the market. My favorite is ADW EX, very smooth, very clean
2.) that depends on a few things, typically i believe the stock and blur based roms are the best in terms of battery, then CM7 roms are close behind, and CM9 is not so great. Not sure for those exact uses, but i believe the atrix is above par for android phone
3.) There not really much to blur IMO, just some widgets and app replacements. Without any rooting or unlocking you can get make the launcher look relatively stock. And of course any CM7, CM9, or MIUI based roms aren't going to have blur at all
4.) I'm pretty sure this just referrer to downgrading from Stock 2.3 GB back to an early stock 2.2 froyo rom, which honestly i don't see why anyone would do that at this point, after you get to GB and unlock it you can move to any custom rom and back to stock 2.3GB if you'd like. Bricking usually happens when don't thoroughly follow directions, i haven't bricked my phone yet and this is my first android phone as well
5.) Very few to none really, there are a few games that require, certain chipset, like OMAP, tegra, etc. but this can be fixed by install chainfire 3d. So when you get your phone it'll be compatible with 99% of apps out of the gate there aren't any i've run into yet
6.) Quite well, many apps are specifically tuned toward tegra, and it's capable as it is
7.) I think i read that, if your on stock with root permission, you can't receive OTA updates, but on any custom rom it's not a problem
8.) I believe the Atrix has a relatively strong dev community, just a quick look at the number of posts on this site, the Atrix has one of the top.
Im using atrix for 7 months now...its my first android phone and after a lot surfing in net i bought this one....believe me its the best.
With the usage like u mentioned it surely lasts for one day...it has d powerful battery 1900mAh! Blur UI is really good (in 2.3.4)...those all might be related to 2.2.1 but after the update its good...
It takes really good HD vdos...great pics(xcept night shots)....touch and rest is awesome

The Atrix is a good investment. Look at the phones coming out today. What do they have over this phone? Pretty much nothing. They usually have higher stock CPU speeds but other than that they are similar. This phone is a year old and still had enough specs to run with phones coming out. Until the 4-plus-1 chips start showing up in phones you can't get much better. Unless you want a bigger screen.

Once I moved to Atrix from my iPhone 3G I could never go back. This thing is a powerhouse. It replaced my computer for me. The battery is pretty good for a dual core device. So long as you know not to keep useless apps running in the background (which there are apps out there that automatically take care of that).
I have experienced several bugs here and there but it's nothing major. Extremely fast browsing experience as well.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone. Especially once you root this thing, it turns into a super powerhouse
I'm running MIUI ROM from Th3Bill and loving it (thanks Th3Bill!), the latest release (.29) has transformed my phone - again.
I just have a question though.
I notice the bill releases lots of JB roms (AOKP, Paranoid Android, CNA, MIUI)..
I'm uncertain as to the difference between all of these.
do any work better or worse on the atrix 4g?
Don't get me wrong i'm not doubting TheBill for one microsecond, but am just curious as to why so many roms would be released by one person unless they have some difference between them, or is it just a different look and feel?
I guess i'm just wanting the best JB experience i can get with the ROMS currently available, and short of 'just trying them all', well. i took the lazy route and posted here to ask what fundamental differences there are to an end user perspective.
i understand the underlying release may have features which do not work with the atrix (cam/fp-sensor/tether) and this will be comon accross all ROMS using this underlying release.

Best thing to do is probably use each for a day and see which ones have the features you like/need.
I haven't tried cna or pa yet, so I can't comment on their stability. I think since they are all based off the same cm10 that their issues (beyond the common issues of all the roms) are upstream. For example, I don't think any of the roms have camcorder 100 percent working, or native wifi hot spot. The individual roms probably have some smaller bugs that are upstream of th3Bill's work, like I said.
Here's a rough breakdown: miui is very themed/themeable and has some custom features like a cool lock screen, sms pop ups,... You probably know miui already, since you are on it. It's the most different from the rest.
Paranoid android specializes in tabet/phone hybrid ui, tweaking dpi for individual apps without reboot (I think)
Cna is the only jb rom (I think) that has custom lock screen targets yet. I don't know much about it other than that.
I'm on aokp, and I really like it. I like the notification toggles with a brightness bar underneath, and I like the rest of the systemui tweaks.
People can add to this, or correct me if I'm wrong about any of it.
Unfortunately it's a bit time consuming to set up a new rom every day, but there is only 4, so I'm sure you can find the time.... At some point.

This is good information to have thank you, and gives me some comfort that i'm not missing out on anything, also that just trying each rom for a day or two is the way to do it.
Cheers for your help, although as my phone is a daily runner, i'll probably stick with what i know now (MIUI).
I may find a cheep atrix to try loading other roms onto soon and perhaps be adventurous with trying other roms on that.

Miui is definitely my favorite but it feels a little heavy/less responsive compared to aokp/cm10.
I can't comment on cna, or pa because I've never used them.
Aokp/cm10 are great. Fast and smooth and a few of the paid themes lurking around the play store are absolutely stunning, Dream, Lucid, PopStyle all amazing. I use Aokp because of it advanced visual preferences like centered clock, weather under toggles, sliders, lock screen tweaks, on screen nav buttons, stuff like that

I´m using Epinter´s CM10 and I´m loving it. I find it very fast and my battery last all day.
I´ve tried MIUI and personally is the one I like the least. AOKP is good also, but not as good as Epinter.
I tried JB roms and my first ROM was CNA. But the provided build during my install had issues and Bill said he might take couple more days. Since it was more related to emails, i have to switch back to other ROM and switched to epinter.
I am on epinter CM10 and its i like it. But even in this ROM, i am having issues with apps like shopkicks not getting loaded.
And few times, when i launch four square app, i will see like slanting colored lines until i reboot.
Also rarely WiFi issues it wont connect and even not possible to disable Wifi until reboot.
But Battery wise i get nearly 1.5 to 2 days with regular use of browsing, 2 emails , texting and phonecalls.
I have been a member for a long time, but I never post anything so in that sense I'm new enough that I can't post this in the forum I wanted to, so I'm asking here. This is going to sound like a hateful rant and I'm sure someone is thinking, "If she knows that, then why is she hatefully ranting?" I am not ready to give up yet, so I'm explaining how I arrived at this point.
I have had my Gtab for about a year and a half. In that time I have rooted it and changed the ROM several times. I moved up to the 1.2 bootloader. In all this time I haven't really used it much because it just doesn't work right no matter which rom I try. Each rom will be ok for a few days, and then it starts getting glitchy. I got so fed up with it, I just parked it for several months and didn't touch it. Just recently I have installed the smoother bean rom. It is sort of ok but it doesn't 'just work'. I'm not a bigtime gamer, I like angry birds and sudoku. I surf the internet, watch videos, read books/magazines that are in epub format. When I study, I highlight text and make notes. When I sit down to study, I need it to work. No hangups or lockups or slow/frozen screens. When I get it out to use at the KH to follow along with the material I studied previously, I need it to just work. It has been to the point that I had to open the thing and physically unplug the battery to get it to behave. I was so excited to get this tablet and read all the information in these forums about it, so I knew what I was getting into when I bought it. The bloom is off the rose and I just want a tablet that does what I want it to do. I don't even care if it has jellybean or ICS or even Honeycomb at this point... I just want a tablet that works without having to fiddle around with the software.
And I don't install crazy amounts of apps. I think there are 7 or 8 that I use. Mainly Moon+ reader, Dolphin browser, Pinterest and Sudoku and Angry birds. I also like to sync my google stuff, calendar, contacts, email.
I'm am thinking I might put it back to stock and let it do all the OTA updates and see how it runs. But if I do that, I have to do the fix that makes the google market and stuff work. If I can do that and in the end have a working tablet that is decent and stable, I'll do it. Can anyone give me any feedback after having done this themselves? How was your tablet after? I remember how horrible it was out of the box. Is it better? MUCH MUCH Better? or just a little better.
Is there another rom that has been proven to be stable? I'm not worried if the camera or bluetooth doesn't work, I don't use those with the tablet. I don't think they are working right now, I'm not sure I haven't tried them since I installed the smoother bean rom. It can be any version of Android, I don't care.
I have given some thought to selling my gtab and getting another tablet, but I don't want to do that just yet. I know there has to be a solution, I just haven't found it yet.
Any feed back or suggestions would be most appreciated. The developers work hard on this tablet and have kept it going when Viewsonic themselves quit on it. I think that its really cool that there is such a devoted community of people who still love this tablet.

My recomendation for "stable"
No expert here, but I have multiple g-tablets. For the "stable" ROM, I use Cyanogenmod cm-7.2.0-smb_a1002.zip

I have very similar experience as yours. Bought the gtab long ago, played for a while, then stashed away for several month, but pulled it out again while some brilliant devs actually put JB on it.
I will never ever go back to stock on gtab. Both Smoother Bean and G-Harmony Jellybean ROMs work reasonably well. In my opinion, they are already pushing the limit of the hardware.

Whereabouts can I download that ROM? I googled the file name and I found the cyanogen download page with the various releases but I wasn't sure which one to pick. I didn't see any that said for the gtab and to tell the truth, it was late and my eyes were sleepy! If you know of a place to download the ROM, I would appreciate it. I would like to give it a shot and see how it goes on my tablet. I'm also going to try out reinstalling JB. I didn't realize there was a update for smoOther bean. So, we'll see what happens.
For stability and full function of the Gtablet, you will probably want to use a Froyo rom. All other versions of Android required re-written drivers and/or kernel, as Viewsonic did not release an official version, and never released their source code. My favorite Froyo rom is:
TNT 6039
I used that rom with VTL Launcher for months, until TeamDRH released their JellyBean rom. You might need to make some minor modifications to see all the apps in the Play store, just read the thread.
I also have another Gtab that is running CyanogenMod. This became my 'stable' tablet. My parents, kids and nephews have used it for months with no complaints. If it gets a little slow, just wipe the cache and it speeds right back up again. Hardware acceleration does not work on Gingerbread, so major 3d games often have graphical glitches, but it is very stable. Here is a link:

Thanks for the feedback ya'll. I did install the CM7 ROM and I also tried another one, I can't remember right now which one it was. I was tempted away by the G-Harmony Jellybean ([ROM-AOSP][BL-1.2]G-Harmony Jellybean 4.1.2 ODEXed (UPDATED 12/28)) , I installed the Overclocked version and I have to say it is doing very well. I did have some SOD's but I supercharged it and bumped up the CPU with No Frills CPU and since then it has had no trouble. Its been since Saturday that I installed this ROM and I have used it a bunch since then. I guess time will tell.
I do have a question tho about a problem I'm having but it's absutely not a deal breaker. I can't get google calendar to sync. I know other ROMS have had a package to install that fixed this but I wasn't sure if I could do that with this rom. I don't want to jack up my install. I don't absolutelly have to get the calendar working right now. I don't have reliable internet at home, so the only time I get online with the thing is when I wifi tether to my phone. Was just wondering if anyone knew how to resolve this issue. Again, I would post in the forum for this ROM but I'm not allowed yet.

When DRH is ready to release their new rom, it will likely be on the other forum first. Search Google for "gtablet roms 1.2/1.3" and that forum will be listed at the top of the page. Can't link you to it, else I may anger the XDA Moderators! Sounds like they are very close, just waiting on a new recovery.
As for my current build, just a basic CM10 build with a few minor customizations (my chosen boot animation, removed/replace system apps, changes to build.prop, etc.). I cannot share it because I am using the new (unreleased) kernel, and it's a pretty 'plain' version of CM10, but you can easily build it all yourself. Once you have your build environment setup, it is easy to rebuild an updated version any time you like. Only thing is, you are on your own when it comes to troubleshooting and support! If you are interested, I can link you to the info I used to figure out how to build the kernel and CM10, and the Git locations of the required source code. You would need a decent computer running 64bit Linux (I use Arch Linux, but Ubuntu is easier to setup), about 50GB hard drive space, and some free time. I just did it for fun, plus I'm impatient and wanted to try the new kernel, and none of the JB roms at the time would run well for me.
Best ROM for G-Tab

I bought my G-Tab whentheyfirst came out and have tried about 13 or 14 ROM's over the last (nearly) two years. In my opinion the best is SmoOtherBean by Nobe1976. Out of the box it is pretty good, I made a few minor adjustments after the install and it is running perfectly.
Changed dpi to160 (enabled Music / Movies in the Play Market)
Used ROM Toolbox to delete Music FX and DSP Manager (fixed problem where music would suddenly blare or change volume)
Set min/max CPU to 312 / 1200 (seems to wake up faster, no lags when browsing,etc)
Give Nob1976 a thumbs up if you like his ROM - stop the trolls who have chased off so many devs.....

Running SmoOther Bean but it starts up laggy?
Nice you gave me some more settings to try. Don't know that I want to change the DPI or have any issues with volume. Did change CPU settings. Anything else you'd recommend?
After it's run for about 10 minutes, it seems to work OK, only occasional lag. I'm setting background processes limit to none on every boot up. Anyone have a way to make that change stick between reboots?

For anyone who is "still looking" for something stable, check out noble1976 modified Blackbean (on this site).
I am very satisfied with this "beta" version that this maybe will be the last one I'll be using (its that stable for me).
A big THANK YOU to Noble1976 for his hard work on getting this version to work on the gtablet and his PAC rom and all the other help he has given to us. :good:

Are you seeing any startup or sleep lag like I'm getting with SmoOther Bean? I switched from Go Launcher EX to the default one (Apex?) and it does seem a bit better.
Would like something a bit more responsive for daily use though. What's involved to flash Blackbean over SmoOther Bean? Repartition, etc?

BAKED Bean you will must NVFlash to the new 2013DRH setup. The boot.img in that ROM is the latest fosser2 3.1.10 kernel. The mounting is completely different other then the System. So updating the Tablet with the latest that is linked in the OP should be done to the T.

The only "lag" I'm seeing is after the opening screen animation the screen goes blank for 10sec or so. So, just wait till the regular default screen appears.
And be sure to do what Nobe1976 said. It went very easy for me changing over, for I already have used NVFlash 2013DRH version with
nobe1976 "PAC" ROM. Good Luck.
Currently, I'm stock+root (as it seems none of the ROMs were super-solid, based on the various lengths of forums for each ROM).
I'm currently considering Infection 2.1, which looks great. I'm curious as to how fast and solid it performs, however. For instance, I have a stock Nexus 7 with JB (obviously) and it's the smoothest greatest Android device I've had to date. With JB on the Rezound, are we seeing the benefits of Project butter?
Are voice calls, SMS, battery life, 4G, bluetooth audio, GPS, etc all solid? It can be so hard to look at the first few pages of a ROM where everyone is excited, followed by 234 pages (like Infection) of people posting questions and problems. Even worse, a ROM like Infection has been out so long that it's hard to tell what issues people currently have vs what they had 2 months ago.
Im in it now and so far no problems, project butter is def noticable
Well I'm running Infection 2.1 and it's fast and very smooth. I'm running it with IHateWebOS' deluxe+ kernel OC 1.8 with noop scheduler.

is gaming choppy?
ive noticed most of the 10/10.1 roms are choppy on the gaming side
i would like to test but i dont see the point in flashing the newest update just to find out when i can just ask :silly:

When i was running Infection 2.0 it was pretty choppy, but since i switched to the latest PAC-MAN rom by shrike and it's pretty smooth. Might have been the transition to 4.2.2.
Project butter isn't enabled for us on the Rezound, from what I've gathered there's a lot of coding that needs to be done to the jelly bean base to get it to work on our device properly. The smoothness comes from all the tweaks and enhancements the Rom devs have put Into the world Roms. I can't wait to see how smooth this phone will be once project butter is actually working

Having experienced Project Butter firsthand, I can say in no uncertain terms that this isn't Project Butter. However, the interface is quite smooth given the right CPU governor. As mentioned, games performance is where things lag. We don't have hardware accelerated video, so anything 3D or HD is going to suffer.
.... Oh well its smooth and that's what counts right? Ha
I've tried every JB rom and the infectious 2 was the best to date.. but I always go back to the desensed Neo 2 for the battery life and I prefer the camera over JB as well.

Not quite sure what this means...JB for the Rezound hasn't been out THAT long as it took Chad, Neo, Shrike, et al quite a long time to get things somewhat stable. So I wouldn't go by length of thread to judge a usable/stable ROM, or maybe I just misundestand.

The above being said, I too have a Nexus 7 and am running mlaws Dirty AOKP on it. I just left Infection rom on my Rez and it is nowhere near as smooth an experience as on the N7 (no offense Neo, I know you work hard on all your roms).
I went back to hawk's eclipticrez rom for a couple of main reasons:
1. Signal strength is better on sense roms ON MY PHONE ( I have to say it that way because others will disagree heartily, I'm sure).
2. Video is less than perfect on the JB roms for rez.
3. Battery for me seems to be better (20-30%) on hawk's rom...haven't done a real test, just have ran both over several days usually doing the same stuff and I seem to need a charge faster on Infection.
Based on what has been accomplished and what HTC has released, it is a miracle we have JB, but there are still issues with it IMO. ABSOLUTELY nothing against the devs that are pouring their heart and soul into their respective projects, my hat's off to them all!

I think if you really took the time to read through the threads you're talking about, you'd find that there are very few major bugs that haven't been solved. I'm running Infection right now, and all the functions I use on a regular basis are working just fine; SMS, calling, 3G/4G/Wifi I can vouch for, and Wifi Tethering & GPS are working from what I've tested.
As for the threads, like I said. You really should take the time to read through everything. Infection's thread has loads of fluff and miscellaneous conversations with it, and a lot of the issues you may have seen have either been resolved or were just people who were unsure about how to do something. There are very few major stability issues, that I've experienced.
As for the overall usability and smoothness, it's very good. Shrike is right, it's certainly not Project Butter. But it isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination. Underclocking and undervolting can introduce lag, but only in extreme cases. Battery life will depend on the ROM, kernel, and individual settings in question, but there are a few generalities that can be made... such as the Noop scheduler, DanceDance/Wheatley governers, etc.

Edit: I rarely use the camera for photos or videos, and I simply don't have an interest in playing a game on my phone. So I can't give any insights on those aspects, sorry.

With that being said, it's nowhere near perfect. All the basic things that you need a phone to do (talk, text, 3g/4g, wifi, etc) all work efficiently and effectively. However, and this could just be me, but when you're playing around within your phone, such as moving icons around while searching for things online and looking up directions in Maps, things will start "unfortunately stopping" on your phone, and Apex is almost always the first to go. On the bright side, the apps that crash immediately start working again, so it's not as detrimental as it seems.
The only time I've had an out and out failure on the phone was when I was in mid conversation the phone completely went blank. It responded to nothing. It was black screen, no lights, nothing. I had to pull the battery to reboot.
So, as it is within the modding community, everything comes with a certain amount of assumed risk. The closer you are to the bleeding edge, the more likely you are to get cut. (God, that was a terrible ending...)

Thanks everyone in this thread for the thoughtful, detailed responses. Personally I've learned a lot more here than reading through some of the ROM threads.
As a conclusion, I'm going to avoid the JB roms. I do waste a lot of my life playing games and watching video, so it sounds like it's best to avoid the JB ROMs. Plus this is my phone for work, and I take lots of annoying pictures of my kids. Sounds like the JB roms aren't quite stable enough in that regards.
What do people think about the non-JB/Cyanogen/AOKP ROMs? I guess those are optimized versions of base HTC ROMs? Do those perform better?

tell me a jb rom that has video working properly(tearing) and the camcorder working and im all over it. as having a 3yr old i need both.

ICS AOSP/CM/AOKP ROMs work well save for BT audio. Sense ROMs are still better tho...
I haven't seen this mention much, but how is the battery life vs Sense 3.6/4 roms?

BT audio should be fine on the latest ones. Granted, I haven't listened to music on them for more than a test, but calling and A2DP both work on 4.2.2.
How is the performance of google now? And again is battery life better than sense roms?

If you don't want to go to jellybean yet (personally, I find the expanded notifications a killer feature since it previews email subjects and even opening lines)
Then try the simplistic rom by neo. It's an unbloated version of the stock global, sense 3.6 OTA rom and will at least be a little less memory hogging than the stock rom.
If you don't need Bluetooth calling, neo's rage 1.9.5 gets you a very stable, fast version of ICS (with no sense bloat), no video tearing and working camcorder.

I'm using Molten 2.3 Redux because I think it is very stable, everything works.
I'll start, haha. I used to use CM7, but when I got a hankering for something a little updated, I switched to CM10. 7 was quite a bit quicker, but 10 makes up for it with JB. I've tried out the other big gingerbread ones (molten, liberty) and ics roms (cm9, pa) but I really like cm10 as my daily now. Anyway, theres my spiel. If you have any questions I'm still on the dx2 and I'd like to connect with the few users still out there.
I just replaced my x2 with a gnexus (woo cheap new old phones). Used a bunch of roms, from eclipse 1.1 to 2.3 to cm7 9 and 10. Currently I'm on Liberty because it seems like the fastest stable phone (which is what I want from my soon to be backup phone). Overall though, I'd say my go to ROM is cm7. It's stable enough and is still full of features. cm9 and 10 are amazing glimpses into ics and jb but it honestly is just too slow/full of problems that I can't stomach it.

if there was some solution to the phone call issue (losing audio/call after proximity sensor turns screen off), i would have stayed on cm10 as well. i use cm9 instead because of battery life (being about twice as long as cm10) and the issue i just mentioned. i also like to use chrome, and falcon pro. besides those, i dont use many apps, so cm9 is pretty stable for me. occasionally , it will reboot when overloaded. but that is not more than once every couple days. not to mention the reboot thing has been an issue on every rom i have ever tried on this phone. including all of the GB ones. :silly:
honsestly, regardless of what rom you are using, this phone runs SO SO / kinda crappy at best. it is just lacking hardware wise, which is why it will never see an update, and for the most part developers have abandoned it. it was fun while it lasted though. it wasnt a horrible enough experience to turn me away from android. but god has it been dissapointing.
