De Bloating - Honor 5X Questions & Answers

OK so I have taken the leap with this phone. For the first time I have installed a custom ROM, I have the rooted, Deoxed and xposed version from Paul. I managed to get a reboot loop when playing with xposed but fixed it but it has made me a bit wary.
I want to get rid of a few stock apps like the file manager (I like ES file explorer), music player (both Google and the stock player), backup, and a few others.
Research has led me to believe I can use ES to delete the .APK's but this is getting outside my comfort zone a bit and I don't want to delete anything that I actually need. Do other APPs rely on the honor file manager for example?
Advice and pointers too real idiot noob guides would be handy.
Thanks

@SaulBee ... Go to the topic "honor 5X ROMS, Kernels, Recoveries & Other Development". Then scroll down to the thread "(SCRIPT)(TWRP) Stock ROM Debloat for KIW L24, L22, L21 (kiwi)" by @deadman96385 ..... There you will find all the information you need.

Cheers, I will take a closer look. I wasn't sure about just running the script as there was stuff in that I wanted to keep. I'll admit I didn't read the whole thread, so will do that now.

Ok read the thread, unpacked the zip, edited the file to leave a few things and rezipped. Backed up then ran the script all in twrp and it didn't work. Can't remember what the error message was. If android is based on linux and I now have busybox installed can I uninstall stuff in a terminal emulator using the commands in that script one at a time?

@SaulBee ....You obviously know what you are doing ....... so yes I would download a Terminal Emulator from the store and try that. I would also re-check the Meta-Inf file before you re-zipped just in case you missed something.

Cheers I am linux boy really so use a gedit variant. I had a go with titanium backup and got rid of a few things. What I may have a go at is stripping the file down to take out all the nfc files as a little experiment.

[Q] Over the air updates

I'm sorry if this was posted somewhere else, but I searched and nothing came up. When you root your phone does that mean you no longer can receive over the air updates? Or is that only if you have custom ROM's installed? That being said, is the ROM that you install to gain root access considered a custom ROM? Sorry... I feel like a n00b but I had to ask. :] Thanks

You can unroot and update, but be warned a lot of the time an ota update will also correct the current exploits that were used to achieve root access. If you are rooted it's usually a good idea and easier to flash a ROM that includes the update already. The developers get a hold of the source codes a few weeks before VZW actually pushes it to your phone and you don't have to wait for jcase, unrevoked, or whomever to find a new way to root if the ota breaks root access.
Hope this helps"
I was searching the same thing earlier bro and this is the answer I found.
Does this mean if I don't delete bloatware and just freeze it, then I can still get the updates? I read that article and I didn't see them answer whether or not getting an OTA update would take root off. Thanks for the response!

No the point is if you root, have SU, and/or a custom recovery, the update will fail.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Good deal. Thank you for the info.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
So if I'm reading this correctly, a corollary is that if you intend to root but haven't, its likely a good idea to do it before the OTA is pushed, or else you'll have to wait for the developers to figure out how to root the new one?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
More then likely any important updates/fixes/etc will turn up in ROMs anyways.
so how do you disable updates?

try this it works
only difference for you will be lines 4 and 5
look for your current ro.build.fingerprint and change it to the current update...
oh and also don't forget to delete the update from your cache
If you are comfortable editing the build.prop then follow these directions.
Directions:
1. Use root explorer and navigate to /system
2. Mount as r/w
3. Long press on build.prop then click on Open With then Text Editor
4. Find the line ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/SCH-I510/SCH-I510:2.3.6/GINGERBREAD/FP1:user/release-keys
5. Change FP1 or FP5 in that line to FP8
6. Press the menu button on the phone and click on Save and Exit
7. Mount back to r/o
8. Reboot phone

I attached the file for more info.
mine reads:
ro.build.fingerprint=samsung/SPH-D710/SPH-D710:4.0.4/IMM76I/FI27:user/release-keys
do I change the FI to something else? if so this change will not brick my phone? this is my only cell connection to outside world.
the download system update that wants to install is a FL24 is it because the phone knows FI the FL will not install?
You could just rename otacerts to otacerts.bak and then rename updater.apk to updater.bak.

what additional info do you need from my phone, that will make this a more sure ok to do for sure no worries ? what about
what disconnecktie recommended "You could just rename otacerts to otacerts.bak and then rename updater.apk to updater.bak"
is that safer, not sure where to find those files? I am doing titanium back. but i do not want to go through the hassel of reloading everything back on the phone.
Either way will work but the otacerts and updater both just catch ota information when it is sent out. You aren't deleting anything so it is impossible to brick from it. The otacerts is in /system/etc and the updater apk is in /system/app or course. Use a root file explorer like es file explorer and mount system as read/write.

go to /system/etc then rename otacerts to otacerts.bak save it

how long does that change last if they are pushing the update wont it just come right back?

[HOW TO] CRT-Effect only

This is just the plain CRT effect. No custom roms, no pre-made files or anything. (You need root)
I've searched for this on XDA, Google, other forums etc. but I couldn't find it.
It always showed up ROMs including this feature, not the actual feature itself
DO A BACKUP BEFORE EDITING ANY FILES!
Also, you need root
1. Pull framework-res.apk from the /system/framework/ folder via ADB (Alternate way below*)
2. Decompile framework-res.apk with APKTool/APK Manager (Whatever you prefer..)
3. Navigate to /res/values/ and open the bools.xml file with Notepad++ (Notepad works too )
4. Search for "config_animateScreenLights" and change the "true" to "false".
5. Save, and compile the file. Open the fresh-compiled file and copy resources.arsc to the original apk. (Overwrite the existing one)
Click to collapse
Transfer the framework-res.apk file back to your phone, and then switch it with the original one
You must reboot to make it work!
*If you don't know how to push/pull files via adb, you can use Root Explorer and copy it to the /sdcard/ folder, then transfer it to your PC.
If you switch it back with root explorer, programs will start to force close. Just reboot and you'll be fine

Ah, so sorry.
Open the original framework-res with WinRar. And do the same with the modified. In there you'll see the resources.arsc file
If you don't know how to use APK Manager, use google.

I read your thread, and know what you posted.
What I'm saying is that if someone makes the anim for example KF3, it would only take a few seconds to upload so other people could use, while diy CRT anim takes at least 5 mins even if you know what you're doing.

Crashing after modifying fusion.apk

Ok, I have been trying for a while now to change the HTC lock rings and there is a really cool thread on here by mohit1234: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262990, anyway it has a heap of lock rings. Originally I could not put them on as he made them for a different phone model. So then I uploaded my fusion.apk and sent it to him. He made me custom lock rings with both the Earth and the Captain America Shield. So everytime i try to flash it to my phone nothing happens. So I made a copy of the .zip and extracted the fusion.apk and went to copy to the /system/apps directory with both "ES File Explorer" and "Root Browser Lite". But whenever I try to copy it the phone either crashes and restarts or says copy succesful and nothing happens. This also happens when I copy a droidsansfallback.ttf (modded with the emoji icons). But the font works when it says successful. Does anyone know what is happening? Mohit1234 also suggested to push using adb, would this help at all?
Do you have flar2's remove system write protection kernel mod installed and loaded?

No, I don't. How would I go about installing such a thing? Is that why the font keeps reverting every half hour?

You can find it here.
Without that patch, you can't muck about with /system
Total Crashing
Ok, I flashed a zip designed for my phone with the kernel you suggested, and my phone crashed twice (again) when copying the fusion.apk and the droidsansfallback.ttf doesn't even work when I copy it any more. Also when I plug it into my PC and choose "mount as hard disk" my phone crashes and reboots. So I am thinking I should just start again. I think I am going to flash hasoon200's "stock, rooted, deodexed" ROM.
I have tried to install this thing like 4 times, it is in my /system/lib/modules but I can't get it working. I have tried copying droidsansfllback.ttf modded with emoji into the /systom/fonts folder but when I restart it is reverted back to the old one. And seeing as I am new to this I can't decipher the instructions on how to install this.

So I mod the updater-script so it can be installed without busy box.

[Q] HELP Boot Loop due to android.policy.jar

I was Trying to Mod \system\framework\android.policy.jar For Enabling Long Press Menu to Kill App
But while trying to replace the file using Solid Explorer my phone got Restarted
And ended up in Boot Loop :crying:
Lucky I Had a Nandroid Backup of 20th August.
Restoring Backup had fixed the Boot Loop
But I lost many of my mods
Its my fault
I Should have Created a Backup
Does anyone knows why replacing the file caused the Boot Loop ?
And if I'm not asking for too much Could anyone be kind enough to mod my android.policy.jar For Enabling Long Press Menu to Kill App ?
Original android.policy.jar is attached to this
What ROM are you using?

WOW ,I never seen a girl is interested in developing!
The problem was that you're editing an important file of android os. You can't edit that file when using phone ,you have to replace file through recovery and set correct permissions to file.
So you need to create an update.zip (I can do this if you're not in hurry)
Sent from my GT-S5660 using Tapatalk 2
What tutorial have you used? Can you provide a link?
Also, an update zip is not required. You can use AROMA File Manager in recovery to replace the file, and use its built-in terminal to chmod/ chown it.

I understood that when my phone got restarted.
So, i thought i would just use Aroma File Manager to copy the file in Recovery.
But unfortunately Aroma File Manager was not Starting.
Because i forgot to rename it to "aromafm.zip"
last time when i updated it, its file name was "aromafm-1.90.zip".
Just another Stupidity of Mine..
That's why i had to restore my nandroid backup
otherwise i could have used Aroma File Manager to copy the Original android.policy.jar and avoid Boot Loop

Unfortunately, I found out you could fix the problem without losing data ,asking me how? I'll tell you(bad news ,yea?)
You could access recovery right?so you could do these to make your ROM back to life:
create nandroid backup from the unbootable ROM ,do wipes ,flash new ROM ,updating recovery(as you said dear laura) +make files ready to flash(move or what ever)
Then restore the defective ROM and flash file (android.policy.jar) ....
That's it, everything works again without losing any thing! Sorry if I made you sad again :banghead:
Plus ,are you sure "killing via back button" option doesn't existing in settings /developing (named as " stop app via long press back button ")???? Cause almost all of custom Roms have this feature.
Cheers:beer:

The file manager can have any name. You just install it like any other zip.
From the recovery file manager, try replacing that jar again, and use the terminal included in the file manager(menu > terminal) to chmod the replaced jar file.

I Use PhilZ Touch Recovery
In PhilZ Touch Recovery i have to do the following steps for Aroma File Manager Support
Download Aroma File Manager from its Home Page
Get the 1.90 version and name the file aromafm.zip
Put the aromafm.zip in clockworkmod/aromafm/aromafm.zip in external or internal sdcards
In recovery, tap the Aroma File Manager menu or double tap any part of the screen outside menus
It will launch the file manager automatically
Double tap gesture linked to Aroma File Manager can be altered in the GUI Settings menu

If you don't create a thread for your Rom then you'll never know it'll be popular or not.most of girls don't like cyanogen cause of color less UI , but you know what do girls exactly like
Ps.How do you create build.prop? I mean some serial numbers or build numbers should not change to fake num. Right?

Flash all your apps at one time (makes life so much easier)

Here is a .zip where you can flash all your apps in one fell swoop.
This is not my work but something Silesh made for me. I don't think he will mind me sharing it.
I use it all the time and it saves me tons of time not having to install my apps manually.
All you need is WinZip
Just put all your apk files into the data/app folder
and flash away.
What I do is flash the rom and fully boot it first,
then I go back into recovery and flash this .zip.
Boom, all my apps installed. Very nice!
I put just one apk in there. Clean Brower, just so it will work and I can post it here.
Another trick is, using Root Explorer on you phone, just copy your data/app folder from your rom
Then replace that app folder in this .zip and all your apps will be in there.
The advantage to doing this is even when you update or add new apps your apps from the playstore or other, the updated apks will end up in this flashable .zip.
Just make sure when using WinZip when you "add files" and add the app folder you drag it into the data folder. (first delete the app folder that is already in there.)
Again all credit goes to Silesh
Just thought I'd share this.
..
Thanks :good:
Nice to have. Thanks for sharing.
Very good!
Thanks for you. It really works.
Please, can you show, how I can use your zip for another devices? May be for I9000?

It should work on other devices the same.
It flashes all your apps to data/app folder which is used on any Android device.
Obviously not for windows or apple.

Yes thanks.
I have a couple other apps that create flashable zips
But none work as good as the script Silesh has made.
One has an aroma installer but it also has alot of bugs.
Copying my data/app folder into Silesh's .zip works flawless for me.

Aroma Installer
Here is an apk that basically does the same thing.
You can use it to backup and reflash all your apks in recovery at the same time.
This one uses an aroma installer which is nice because you can check or uncheck only the apps you want to install.
It will also do system apps.
Not my work. Had this kicking around from a older phone.
Seems to work fine on the Mega.
Just sharing.
