Galaxy S2 i9100 weird USB connection problem in PC even with replacement USB board. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever i connect my phone with USB to PC (windows 10) , it first alert as connected and then again for disconnected and then again connect and disconnect again and again. SO i am not able to transfer any data as MTP/Mass storage mode doesn't work as PC finally doesn't recognize it .
It's not Software problem It's Hardware one. So all solution related to flashing new ROM /factory reset didn't worked.
Already replaced USB cable and tried on different PC with same results even with correct drivers installed.
So it's fault in USB port , so swapped with friend's Galaxy S2 USB Board completely and again same problem.
I tried when i dissembled it but then there was no GSM network and same usb problem. assembled it back , GSM connection came but again same USB problem.
Though it charges but doesn't connect and shows properly on device manager also. Also sometimes it does detect AC charger as USB , then i disconnect and connect again , then it shows normal AC charger connected.
What's the real problem as even replacement USB board also giving same problem ? Is it problem with motherboard ?
HELP , it's very irritating.

Probably not the motherboard....My guess is the wrong version of the usb board.....There are 4 different 'revisions' of this board for the international i9100.
My guess is you brought the wrong one.

So are you sure it's just 100% USB problem not motherboard ? if yes then i can get it replaced by Local repair shop in less than INR.400 ($5.97) where he will make me sure it works well.
Sounds like a nice deal right ?
EDIT- I just checked the both my old board and the replacement board from my friend's S2 are same Rev no. 2.3 .
But still same issue though his phone might have USB problem.
Can you make sure it's just the USB board problem and motherboard has no role in it. ? so that i can just get the board replaced without any tension ?

My 'gut instinct' is still telling me that it's the usb connector........
IMO, this type of connector is pathetically fragile and simply cannot withstand repeated connection/disconnection over long periods of time. I have owned a number of devices that rely on a micro USB port, and on over 50% of them, either the port or the plug on the end of the supplied charger/connection lead has failed (and I treat my devices with care).
I have never heard of a motherboard causing these types of issues and I've been active on the S2 forums for nearly 4 years, so I've seen a *lot* of posts....having said that, it can't be entirely ruled out....The S2 is now 5 flagship devices out of date, and I guess that those devices that remain in service will start to exhibit new faults that only age can reveal.....
It's up to you if you want to replace the usb board, but bearing in mind the relatively inexpensive cost of the part (compared to the cost of the motherboard), it's as good a place to start diagnosing the issue as any....it's what I'd be doing if i were in your place......

HI guys,
i have 2 problems from 3 days:
i have a problem with my SG2 when i disconnect the charge cable my phone continually stay in charge and every 10-15 second say me charging paused voltage too high.
second problem is USB , when i connect my phone to my computer it does not recognize it .
3 days ago all work perfectly now i try to restore stock firmare, full wipe but the problem persists anyone can help me? thanks
Sounds like the USB circuitry issue we see a fair bit of on here. Given you've already done a wipe & gone back to stock & you're still seeing the problem, I'd say it's a repair job.
Edit to add - You could try gently cleaning the USB port with an new/unused toothbrush before you do send it in for servicing.
maybe is hardware problem i dont know But the problem is in the same spot may be the cable entry which is damaged
Yep it could be the socket itself is damaged rather than the board. I guess they only way you'll know (assuming cleaning it doesn't work; which it probably won't) is if you have a mobile tech take a look at it.
The cable itself can become worn on the pins from multiple flashing and removal of usb cable .

USB device not recognised / This device can perform faster

A month or two ago I started experiencing problems while connecting my S2 to the PC or laptop using the data cable.
When I connect the cable to my S2 on the PC or laptop it comes up with the balloon messages in the system tray:
USB device not recognised.
Then a short while later it comes up with another balloon message:
This device can perform faster.
Sometimes while transferring data, it will disconnect and the file transfer fails.
Sometimes if the cable is moved slightly it will cause the device to disconnect from the PC.
And, of course, the file transfers are much slower than they should be and much slower than they used to be.
GT-I9100 Rooted.
I9100XXKKI3
Gingerbread 2.3.6 Stock (Frankenstein)
I haven't touched any ROM or flashed anything on this in like over 8 months so it's nothing to do on that front.
I removed micro SD card and tried reconnecting again, still the same problem.
I've tried different computers, still the same problem.
I've used different cables, still the same problems. Tried enabling and disabling USB debugging. Same problem still remains.
The USB cables and computer and laptop work fine with my S3.
All the correct drivers are installed for the S2.
I'm resigned to thinking it's a hardware issue as I've exhausted other options. Is there a simple fix or will this need sending back to Samsung?
I've had the phone over a year now but someone told me the warranty is two years?
All help appreciated guys. Thanks in advance.
Why don't you upgrade to ICS?

Probably because his USB port doesn't currently work properly.
@OP, this is often caused by a dirty or faulty USB port. You can try cleaning it, but you may need to replace it.
Try cleaning it out with a dry toothbrush first.
If that doesn't work, take the battery out, and try cleaning the port with a small q-tip with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol; let it dry for a while after that, then replace the battery.
If THAT doesn't work, you'll probably need to replace the part for the USB port.
If your warranty is still good, you could try to go that route, but you'll need to unroot your phone. Otherwise, I've heard it runs about $15 for the part, and you can replace it yourself. If you don't feel up to it, you can have a cell repair shop or Samsung service center do it for you, but it will probably be significantly more expensive than $15.
My opinion based on your description is the USB socket on the phone is wearing out/damaged. The USB socket is on a small circuit board separate from the main logic board. It's easy to replace and the part is cheap on EBay. Search for a disassembly/tear down video and judge whether you can do it yourself.

Thanks for the very quick responses guy. They were very thorough as well.
I will look into cleaning the port and if it still doesn't work I'll consider having it repaired. My soldering skills were excellent but I haven't done it for a few years, so may leave it in someone else's hands.
I haven't upgraded to ICS as I was very happy with my phone at the time. Also, a couple of friends who had upgraded to ICS on their S2 regretted it due to numerous problems, which put me off upgrading.
You can still use mobile odin and theres no soldering needed with the usb,it comes as a board with a ribbon cable.

I've had a look on the Samsung website here:
w ww.samsung.com/uk/support/warranty/warrantyInformation.do?page=POLICY.WARRANTY
It seems as though the warranty period on my phone is 24 months so I might just get it done via Samsung.
I'll contact them in the morning and see where I stand. If not, then the replacement USB board connected by a simple ribbon cable sounds like a doddle. I've seen a grade A condition part on ebay for about £8 delivered.
Thank you once again.

This is a Cable problem. The USB port of your device is wider now, that's why the cable doesn't fit well. Buy a micorUsb cable for blackberry, it's always very full and thick, then use it to connect your phone. The issue should be resolved.
I once had the same problem with my Nokia N8 and using a Samsung cable (which looks fuller and thicker) solved it.
Yeah warranty should be 2 years BUT youll have to unroot it first if your sending it to them.
They may also wipe your phone and stick on 4.0.4.
If you get the board yourself, check the number is going to be the same i.e the spare one I have here is GT-I9100 rev2.2.
Also other people have got a replacement board and the mic doesnt work(think the boards are sold as refurbished).
So its up to you which option you go for.

USB Device Not Recognized

GT-I9100, 4.1.2 stock. All of a sudden started getting this error when connecting USB cable to PC.
Note, I've been trying two different PCs (one with XP, one with Win7), different USB ports, different USB cable - same error. It charges perfectly fine with all these cables and port, but refuses to connect (Debugging on/off...you name it).
Any idea?
Thanks in advance.
OK......I think you have a faulty USB port (they DO wear out)......
Each connector in that port performs a different function. It is entirely possible that one of the connectors in your phones USB port is faulty (in your case, the data transfer connection) while the others remain functional. It is an easy and cheap part to replace.....
If you check my profile, you will see a guide I have written that explains exactly how to replace it.......
Actually.......here's the link to the guide.......

OK, let me understand something - so I need to disassemble the phone first to determine which version my board is, before I even order it, correct? In other words - no other way to determine which version/board I need to order...
Yes....afraid that is the case.....an authorised service centre would have to do it the same way (though they'd probably have every version of the board already in stock).....

hey man,
i had exactly the same with my phone. replacing the usb port of the i9100 helped. i paid 20 € for a new original! one (i think you can get them a little bit cheaper, depends on your location). be careful not to buy fake usb ports from china.
i was afraid of disassembling too. but with the video guide it is simple and easy. the most "problem" i had, was to open the cover. do not force it, be gentle. it takes some time.
you will need a very small screwdriver. you do not need a original from ebay, just go to the next walmart or whatever you have and buy one :good:
merry xmas!
Yeah....most DIY chains will do those micro screwdrivers.....hell, they even sell them in my local £1 store.......(though i imagine they're probably only good for a single use lol)

Did you check your USB cable is working. Because, there are cheap/fake usb cables out there which can only be used for charging, sometimes charging also wont work

Yes. Checked several cables, including the original that came with the phone. All of them charge the phone (in two different computers) but not connecting the USB (again, in two different computers).

phone only charge visually

I think it started when I spring cleaned the inside of my desktop system unit and accidentally plugged the front usb 2.0 connector (my pc is very old) to the motherboard in reverse. I didn't recognize it until I tried charging my phone through the front usb but my phone didn't charged at all and it suddenly got very hot instead.
After that, my phone won't charge through wall or usb anymore. It only displays that the phone is charging but the battery percentage is not really increasing. I already tried replacing the battery and also tried using a different wall charger and it's still the same. For now, I've been using an external battery charger since it's my only choice and I can't afford to buy a new phone.
Can somebody help me identify what parts were damaged and I need to replace in order to fix the problem? Do I need to buy an entire board replacement just to fix this?
BTW, I'm using i9100 Intl.
Thanks in advance.
Replace USB board/port; quick/easy/cheap (<US$15) to do yourself. KeithRoss39 has a guide in General which will enable you to get it done; there's a link to it in Hopper8's Odin Troubleshooting guide stickied in General if you can't find it with a search.

Thanks for the response.
Are you sure it's only the USB board/port that I need to replace? btw, file transfer is perfectly working, charging is the only problem.
USB board malfunction has become a common fault with this phone (and to be honest, all Samsung phones). The board rarely dies completely all of a sudden, almost always shows a couple of faults but works OK in other ways.
Fairly sure this will fix your problem, and given how cheap it is, you might as well try it before you start spending serious money taking it to a service centre or local mobile repair shop. If that's not the problem, it's likely something else on the motherboard but as to exactly what, that's impossible to say without the phone in front of us.
Replace the USB board & see, given you've tried different batteries & charges, it points to the board/port.
The fact that your phone is functioning normally when you insert an externally (fully) charged battery would indicate that the problem isn't with the motherboard.
The USB charger/port board is connected to the motherboard and is pretty much the only part of the phone that separates the motherboard from the charger. As @MistahBungle says, everything points to that board being faulty, and replacing it really does cost pocket change and is something that is relatively easy to do.......
BTW....here is a link to the guide that mb mentioned....

USB connection issue but only data?

Hello, dunno if this is possible/normal but my SII got issue connecting to computer with usb. If i move it slightly, it'll disconnect/reconnect. Sometimes i have to handle the phone is some weird position or it won't connect at all. However for charging, it never has issues. How can i fix this?
There is problem with your USB cable. If you have problems while charging also, then it will be an issue of USB port of your phone.
But i tested with all cable i have, about 4..! The computer detect it but it will disconnect/reconnect as said, often.
And for ADB app such as APK Installer, it won't detect it even if comp did. This is strange, but that's how it is..!

If the cables are not the culprit, it is either the USB port on the phone or the phone itself. You may try cleaning the port, or it needs replacing. I experienced somewhat similar, what I did was do a data wipe and cache wipe on recovery, and that seems to fix the connecting/disconnecting problem.
No it's not software, i have recently reinstalled everything.. I looked at the internal usb port with a little flashlight and it looks fine, i don't get it.. I'm gentle with my devices!
Gs2 is prone to get its USB port faulty, doesn't matter how gentle you are. It can be replaced cheaply though by most of the mobile repair shops. If you want to do it yourself then check out Keith Ross' guide for USB board replacement.
May i ask.. GS2 and GS4 too..?
S2, S3 and S4 all use the same type of connector.......
The issue probably isn't as common on the S3 and S4 simply because those devices are newer and have had less chance for the port to wear out......
The connector (in my opinion) is pathetically fragile and totally unsuitable for repeated connection/disconnection...I think it's called manufacturer induced inbuilt obsolescence lol....
I have personally replaced the ports on two S2s and am having to consider the possibility of replacing the port on mine in the very near future.
Partial failure of the port is a lot more common than is realised......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right
It's the micro USB phone connector. It's a design fault, we can thank Samsung for that. the DATA pins have "broken" from the mainboard and you have to resolder them, I did the same thing to make the data work.
Very tiny soldering.. Not everyone can do that, eh?
^this is true.......
Best to replace the entire board.....
