Is this phone getting Marshmallow any time soon? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

The phone is amazing. But the only problem that I am facing is the MIUI. I don't like this rom. So much of bloatware and not much freedom granted. With this mammoth battery, marshmallow would be amazing on this.
I would really like to know:
1----> Any WIP on the CM13 that is past the alpha build or stable.
2----> Can this phone receive any official support from CM team?
3----> Is there any chance that this phone receives marshmallow update from the MIUI Team???
Any help would really be appreciated!

Hey there. First of all, use the correct forum section for the questions. Here is the Q&A section - http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/help
On your question:
1) No. The devices is pretty new. Released just couple of months ago. There is a lot of work to be done and it take time.
2) Only time can say.
3) Yup. But we will have to wait. Currently Xiaomi are working on MIUI v8 and I guess that it'll be released on 10th of May with their last device running on top of Marshmallow. Then I guess they'll firstly update their flagships MI5 for instance, and after that, we should get it. Keep in mind that there will be around 4-5-6 months till this updates hit us. They are not very fast with this kinds of updates.

Dont expect anything quickly from Xiaomi, MM update will take anything from 6 months to 2 years... But be assured that developers will do a far better job than Xiaomi on MM for RN3...Matter of just a couple of months or even less for good roms to be churned out...

While MIUI 8 will debut on May 10th in China, also some users have posted screenshots of Redmi note 3 running the beta tesing of Android M at miui forum.
I guess Chinese ROM will be available soon, but global ROM might come couple weeks later, but eventually redmi note 3 will get Android M.

Normally their beta runs around 3 and more months. Most of the custom roms are based around Chinese's beta so this won't be a problem, considering that you're on XDA, which means flashing

Hey mate! Glad to see you here! Yup, got my beast 10 days ago and I'm more than happy with it.
About the Nexus, well I still got it, but it lived its life. 4 years of constant usage and a lot of flashing. Was time to get some new and faster tech, so here I'm.

Why are there no custom ROMs?

Hey there,
I was a little astonished when I first got my 5X a few days ago and came here.
There were only some small scripts and a TWRP recovery in the development forums and no custom ROMs.
Why is that?
As I understand the 5X was released a few months ago in the US, so there should already be tons of ROMs available.
Is Huawei blocking the development or something?
I remember when the Nexus phones first released and the first custom ROMs were available like a few hours after the first phone got sold. Same for Samsung Galaxy phones etc.

k9cop is right, the fact that a non-nexus device has recovery and several solid scripts within 11-12 days of release is pretty incredible.
Huawei isn't blocking anything. They are far more cooperative than many manufactures. They provided an official route for bootloader unlock, and have provided a surprising amount of source (including kernel). They've even asked, "what else do you guys need?"
Nexus is different. Not only is everything that is needed for development available up front, the volume of existing, experienced developers that jump into each new model is very high. I don't think I've ever owned a non-nexus device that had ROMs within the first few hours (unless it was nearly the same model of one that already existed).
From my 7-8 years on XDA, and the 20-25 devices I've used that benefited from these forums, development is happening very quickly.

I'd do it if Android was based on Windows.
Sadly I have no experience with the Linux filesystem and building kernels.

The US version was released just a week or two ago and we've already got the kernel source code, TWRP recovery and the ability to unlock the bootloader and root. In my mind, that's amazing. I ordered one of these (received it today) simply because of how fast development seems to be moving. I expect great things from this phone. My initial impression of this phone is that the bar has been moved and it's one of the best $200 phones on the market.
@OP, there's no custom rom at this specific moment because you didn't build one yet. Lol. Give it time. . This phone is amazing as is, i can't wait to see custom roms on it

Still no sign of Note8 Oreo(other than fota servers)
Oreo Beta for S8 should be coming out around 4-6pm(European time/German time) today.
I was thinking the same thing when I saw the news about the s8. You would think we would have gotten it first considering this is Samsung's latest flagship.

Sounds good, I am already in the UK just ran this command via ADB and got to the beta screen, Thanks.
Q: will it only be to selected people in the UK or as long as you have ran this command you have access too? (when it goes live i mean)
@ProtoDeVNan0: Were you able to capture a new OTA? I saw it somewhere but I don't know where. Thx.
Can't seem to get the ABD command to run.. I'm guessing im just being clueless or getting tunnel vision and not seeing what im doing wrong.

you have adb installed?
just plug your phone in and open cmd from adb folder and type
adb shell
then copy and paste the command
tip - you can right click in CMD and paste (ctrl=V does not work in CMD)

Yup. Seems like Samsung didn't want to recompense for Note7 fail and they only launched Oreo for S8. Note8 users will have to wait till 2018Q1 to get Oreo. What a joke.
I tried porting S8 Oreo to Note8 but there's too much BIG stuff that isn't compatible. There's a chance that Note8 will get Oreo at the end of this month and this beta will be available for most people in Europe. But I feel like Samsung really did leave us.
Quick update: Note8 most likely won't get Oreo beta anymore. So we will have to wait till January/February to get Oreo.
In the meantime I've tried porting Oreo couple of times. New betas etc. But none of them booted. After somehow "porting" the kernel from S8 it still doesn't boot. I managed to reach bootanimation but then it just bootloops. And it wouldn't be that bad but.. logcat just doesn't want to work. So I can't even check what's breaking the boot.
It's December already so I guess we can just wait another 2 months yay.. It's pretty sad to use Nougat which came out almost 2 years ago.

Can You just LEAVE me alone?
Thank You.
Btw, Note 5 got beta, Note 7 was recalled so obviously no beta, so Note 8 should get beta as well. But it seems like You're deciding for Samsung which device should get beta and which one shouldn't.
Edit: Added You to ignore list so I won't be able to see Your messages anymore. Find someone else to be mean to .
Also, at least I'm spending a lot of hours trying to port Oreo to our devices because there are 100s of people waiting for it, even my users are asking about it. And You're just saying "STOP WHINING!" "NOTE 8 WON'T GET OREO BETA!!" . It doesn't really help anyone. Instead of being mean You could help me and other devs with porting Oreo. We just need someone with reverse engineering skills and smali/assembler knowledge.
Oh and why not just wait for official release? 3 reasons.
1. It will take at least 2 more months to get official Oreo(Depends on region too).
2. Porting roms is a lot of fun and gives me a lot of new knowledge.
3. I have cancer and other health problems and I can't wait. Tomorrow I might die or in 2 days or in a week or a month or a year. And my blood results are getting worse so if I can do something about Oreo then I will.
Some of us REALLY can't wait .

where is galactic stryder??

Once galactic stryder started to collected crowd funding to buy a new le max 2 and then also ordered it and then it now arrived because of some issues. Anybody can tell me what happened to the money of yours you donated? And why he is not developing? Just curious to know that!
Heyyo, he posted a while back that he has had stuff going on in life so it was delayed a few months for software development.
Tbh even once he starts it could be a few months before he has a properly working x2 build as he uses his own kernels with some stuff based on Darkobas (Oreo) and I haven't seen anything happening there either... So really who knows when we shall see some AOSPA x2 stuff.
Such is the way with crowdfunding anyways. We funded a device for him and it will take time for things to get done. I know I donated a bunch too but hey I am barely making progress on Oreo but I try with my limited software development skills and time.
He wrote to me that let max 2 "will be supported on our AOSPA 8 from April"
Let's wait for the guy solve his issues. Nobody forced us to donate. I am sure that he didn't run away with the LeMax2  Any user should understand that developers are also people with jobs, family, etc. Heck, even to reply to xda Q&A takes time (thanks @ThE_MarD), so it's often to see that there's no answer from the dev to "why torch is not working" question or stuff like that.
Honestly speaking, even without him, the development of X2 is at a very good level by my standards.
I think we should also donate to infrag and all the others who worked really hard to fix the builds for this device.
Thanks to all for info
Let me undersrand it correctly. You bought new phone for some guy in hope he will develop rom, but no news from him, he ran away with new phone. Well there's a sucker born every minute.

Forgive me, but it's a sad statement.
Actually, a passionate and skilled guy who did a good job with a very similar phone, offered to work on improving support for this device. I can't event think he needed another underpriced (because of lack of official support from manufacturer, bankrupt) smartphone

He is very active kernel dev for Le pro 3, so it wasnt like, hey lets give new phone to random guy.
Hi, sorry for the delay, the phone has reached my door only yesterday, 5 months waiting - or even more - it's good that I have time now to develop and the phone, I just didn't get to XDA those last months so I get the hesitation of all the users when I was off and without the phone; time's passed and as you can see on my Github we have started moving again, wrote all my Kernel script to support the new device on both versions - one Kernel fits all, right? (my LG G2 users should remember that one) - as I'm planning to support stock M versions and the upcoming, if ever coming, N versions of EUI.
The stock Kernel code is a mess just like the one from Pro3 - what did I expect? - so I may time until Saturday to get the vanilla CAF one up and running stable. After that I'll set up my Ryzen machine with another distro, probably BBQ, to compile a more recent version of N or O.
I have just updated to the latest Chinese ROM (X821) to compare the Kernel messages and take some information to merge with my previous work, I'll open a DEVB thread as soon as I get something stable running for EUI users.
Hope that clears out any misunderstandings...

Hey there im new! Help a brother out? Elephone s8 ROM

Okay.. So here goes..
Elephone s8 purchased 2 months ago.. I'm with you guys when I see the frustration all you guys have with this phone..
You may have noticed this morning that Elephone has released not such an update but a patch so to say.
I Really dont want nor trust this company.. Its an unofficial update that will probably be aload of rubbish anyway.
Now I have been looking at skeletons ROM on here.. is it good? do you still use it? Is there anything new since?
Im just fed up and hoping you guys can shed some light.. Im petrified on where to start to even flash my phone as ive read up about devices being'bricked'? but willing to just to get something that is sufficient.
I merely ask as you guys are the guys to ask.. The leaders IMO in everything android.
Any information would be greatly appreciated
Eragon is already dead. Skeleton has abandoned the project so no updates has been made since his last one.
I have not tried it nor the custom rom that was released on Elephone forums.

I suggest just using AEROM. Aerom is better than stock and Eragon. Aerom will be updated soon. And aerom fixed lot of bugs.

Erikki123 man I hope you're right.
how do you know about the update? can you share a link?
we're really hoping for oreo here for more than a year
You can download the new rom here but I wouldn't recommend it:
https://bbs.elephone.hk/thread-14242-1-1.html
I have tried all three roms but the stock rom worked best for me. Additionally I flashed twrp and installed supersu for root.
I don't expect any future updates for the AEROM. I think they brought this out as kind of compensation because there will be no android 8 for this device. For me it caused more problems than it solved but experiences may be different on this special phone.
Edit: link corrected
I have tried all three too, and for now I stick to Eragon anyway.
I have contacted Elephone and can confirm that S8 and P8 are officially "dead", indeed.
That's disappointing, mainly because Elephone had started a campaign a year ago (or so) and promised at least two years of support from then on.
But then I have known Elephone from their previous flagships, owning both M3 and P9000, so I'm not really surprised.
But then they did a MUCH better job at bugfixing with M3/P9000 than thay did with S8. At least P8 is running rather flawlessly.
Please also find all required files for rooting the Elephone S8 at:
https://www.mediafire.com/file/k1ldc..._root.rar/file
I hope this helps.

Question Will there be custom roms?

I am thinking about importing this phone but i wanna be sure to buy a phone that is generally well supported regarding custom roms. So far the only custom rom i see for this phone is the xiaomi.eu rom which can only be flashed via fastboot.
So my questions are:
1. Do you think it is worth buying this phone over the oneplus 8 pro (not only regarding specs but also regarding moddability)?
The specs would be nice to have but moddability is more important to me.
2. When do you guys think will major custom roms start to support this phone?
i am coming from the Axon 7 who is known as a "moddable" Phone. There are a lot of Custom Roms for this Device and i am a "flasher" too. But with the Mix 4 this is not needed. The Xiaomi.EU Rom Stable is the best solution i think because i like the MIUI.
i don't think that it is the best "moddable" Phone but it is a great Phone always.

Some custom ROMS in China supported this phone. But Mi 11 ultra is the best.
I consider myself picky when it comes to roms and for the last 4 years I used something very close to aosp. However I fully agree that xiaomi.eu is a very good and I don't feel any need to change it with anything else. That's even more impressive when you consider what a piece of trash is the original CN rom.
Of course more choice is always welcome, but the one option we have right now is close to flawless.
I've always used custom ROMs, GSI, LineageOS, etc.
I got my Mix4 this week thinking there was no way I was gonna use MIUI, but ... gotta say, once you customise it a bit - it works pretty well!
I got my Mix4 and Pad5 about a month or to ago and im kinda really fed up with miui, on the Pad5 there are a few gsis that work really well, but for the mix4 there unforuneatly isnt any aosp style rom, but i really hope there will be some day, im going tonbe flashing it the instant one comes available.
The opinions on this subject are quite split in the middle... as far as i know, they are working on it to create an AOSP-based alternative. I submitted for testing.
Before the Mix 4, i had my Mix 2 with Lineage almost constantly, since MIUI is just not my taste.
A aosp based rom would be awesome. Where can you submit for testing?
I'm on weekly xiaomi.eu MIUI13 A12 and it is amazing. Came from google pixel 6 pro. that was an unusable phone.
Same as me I just made the switch from the P6P on Wednesday. Got a bit bored with it.
For those asking about custom ROMs if you join the mix 4 official telegram page you'll find the info.
