Shortcuts to HwModuleTest tests - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
The phones from Samsung, and a lot of other android phones as well, have a hardware module test. When in the dialer, you pres *#0*# for a menu to pop up. In this menu there are several tests to be done. My question is fairly simple. I'm searching for a way to make a shortcut to those test. So not the hardware module test menu, but specifically a test, let say the LED test.
I've two devices. A rooted Tab S (without dialer app) and a S7. When I'm on my Tab S, and make a shortcut in my launcher for an activity, I can scroll down to HwModuleTest and select a ton of activities ( see screenshot), but when I click on it, it says that the application is not installed. On my S7 I tried doing the same, but I didn't get as much options as on my Tab S, but if i choose the main activity, it also says application not installed.
Question: Is there another way to make this shortcut (WITHOUT ROOT)-or-is there a way to monitor all the activities the phone has. That way I can see what specific activity the HwModuleTest uses to peform these tests.
My gratitude will be great.

[Q] create shortcut to directly settings?

Is it possible to create shortcuts on the home screen to point directly to specific settings?
E.G. I would like a shortcut to the USB utitlites setting (Settings>Wireless and network>USB Utilities) for when I want to plug my usb cable in to transfer files.
I'd also like a shortcut to the Wi-Fi settings (Settings>Wireless and network>Wi-Fi settings) to scan and switch network quickly.
You can add shortcuts to the 1st tier of settings, but not below. Other than that, you're looking for a 3rd party app that acts as a shortcut, or Launcher Pro may be able to do it by adding activities as shortcuts.
Thanks johnc. Can you explain how I can set a shortcut to the first tier of settings.
This is my first Android phone and I have only had it for 3 weeks but the more I use it the more unfinished Android is looking. There are just so many basic usability functions that are missing within the core apps. It seems you need to tack 2-3 3rd party apps on everything to make it work properly.

Once you get more used to it you'll be fine. There's obviously a learning curve, but it's well worth it as Android allows you to do so much, but yes, usually with the help of an app or two.
Anyway, to add a settings shortcut, long-hold on your home screen and in the pop-up menu, select "Shortcuts". Then, scroll down and select "Settings". That will give you your settings menu and you can then add anything off that menu to your home screen.
That's instructions for doing it with the TouchWiz launcher, which is the default launcher on stock devices. If you have a different launcher then it may be slightly different, but that's generally it for all of them.
Hope this helps mate

[Q] home "recent apps" list

I just installed a ROM (Senseless ROM 1.1) and I'm liking it a lot. But I noticed something odd when pressing and holding the "home" key to bring up the "recent apps" list. Every few minutes the oldest items drop off the end of the list.
So initially maybe I have 4 apps in the list, then after a while of switching between apps 1 and 2, suddenly there are only 3 apps in the list, then 2. And eventually it even drops down to 0 so the app I'm currently running isn't even in the list. Does the stock phone do this too and I only just now noticed it or is this feature only an issue with my particular ROM? What aspect of android controls the app switcher (if that's what it's called).
I'm using launcher-pro if it matters, and I haven't installed any task switchers from the market. I might consider getting one of the market task switchers as a decent workaround, but I'm not necessarily keen on the interface they all seem to use (tap home -> task switcher; tap home twice -> home screen of your launcher that you would otherwise get to with a single tap).
I haven't yet found any settings for controlling the app switcher. Are there any, and where do they live?
I almost can't imagine that this is an intentional design feature of the "recent app" history, but after an LED "notification" light that turns off after 5 minutes, anything is possible.
For what it's worth I started using the market app "PreHome" as a task switcher and am finding it a good replacement for the default. Now I just hit [home] once to bring up the PreHome app which maintains a good history, and never use the hold [home] to get the default android task history.
Oddly enough I haven't been able to reproduce the original problem I had reported, even when I do use the default switcher for a while.
I knew this would happen.. as soon as I reported that it wasn't reproducing anymore I started hitting the problem again. At least the part where semi-old items start dropping off the history list. I still haven't yet reproduce a history list containing 0 items.
Browsing the web seems to be the most reliable way to make older apps fall off the end of the list. Specifically I was browsing m.zedge.net listening to ringtones.
Anyway the only new news is that when an item drops out of the traditional app history list, it also dropped out of the PreHome app's list.

[HOW TO] Access Native Android Battery Usage Monitor (including SOT)

As many of you have noticed, going to Settings > Power Manager brings up ZTE's own flavored battery usage monitor. However, one glaring omission from their monitor is the Screen On Time (SOT).
Luckily, the stock android battery usage monitor is still present on the device, and is just not listed in the menu.
To access it:
Easy Way: Install "Battery Usage Shortcut" from the Play Store. It's basically just a shortcut to "com.android.settings.fuelgauge.PowerUsageSummary"
More roundabout way (for those who want to explore more):
Download and install "Shortcut Master (Lite)" from the Play Store, or any similar shortcut-creating/accessing app.
Hit menu in the top-right corner and select "App Explorer". Hit Yes to the pop-up, and then hit anywhere on the screen or the back button to quickly get past the loading dialog. Go down to com.android.settings and scroll down and select PowerUsageSummary (more towards the bottom of the list). As you can tell by all the options scrolled past, there's a lot of settings and such. The majority of them link to the options available under the regular Settings app, some (like this battery usage monitor) are hidden from the menu but still functional, some have a GUI but probably don't have the underlying functionality (like WiFi Calling config), some don't work at all and either don't run or crash the Settings app. If you run something that causes your device to spaz out and crash, don't blame me!
Alternatively, select "Search" instead of "App Explorer", search for PowerUsageSummary, and select the one without the $ in the name.
Enjoy!
Jesus... Why, why couldn't ZTE leave this alone?

Thanks man. Idk why ZTE didn't just leave it the way it is. I am liking how under the skin, it's just clean android and how they aren't doing anything too crazy

For those with Nova Launcher, it seems to have something suitable with its Nova activities widget, which allows selection of a plethora of things including many system settings. I don't have an A7 yet but I had a look, if other shortcut apps can do it then Nova should be able to too, I used it on my current phone (LeTV Le 1S) to turn Clearvision on.

Disadvantages and My Questions About Pie OneUI on S9+

Hi, im using Pie on S9+ for some days and found some options has been removed/moved and some changes are really bad.
1) Did frameless icons option on Oreo has been remove in Pie? All icons are with frame at the moment. Is there any way to get rid of this frames without changing theme or icon set?
2) They changed Contacts app. I was able to set "Google+Phone+Profile Sharing" as "showed contacts", now they moved to left menu and can only select all or one account like Google. So they removed custom list feature on oreo.
3) recent apps section is bad. they should bring back old one (one under the other) as alternative like on goodluck 2018 app. it is good for sliding but needs to be improve.
4) If i use gestures as navigation, how can i open google assistant with home button (was holding to home button)
5) They removed to disable bixby button. but you can still disable bixby with adhell or notsabs. also new bixby is worse.
6) They should add sliding and animation between on system apps. for example "keypad, call history, contacts, places"
7) They removed location settings. We cant select "save battery, only gps, Now it is automatically gps+wifi+mobile networks or they hid and shouldn't i find?
8) i have gear s3 classic. there is a problem with bt connection, there is interruption on almost far rooms. it wasn't any problem before. if someone use gear, can u check? also "connected gear xxxx via bluetooth connection notification is too big. it was able to shrink as very thin in oreo.
9) there is a problem with enterprise wifi networks that needs certificates.
10) old font on aod, weather clock widget, app names was better in my opinion. some clone phones were using "new font" like font.
11) there is no schedule for night mode. this should be added.
12) they should add old full screen navigation as 3rd option.
13) if they move volume setting to right or left (you will able to select) it will be better for one ui.
14) i think new icons are worse. also they didnt change samsung music's icon.
15) peak schedule feature in samsung email isnt working for @hotmail.com emails as microsoft exchange. it's working on gmail or outlook. i know outlook and hotmail are same. but tried with lots of mails, they arent working for hotmail
16) i realized night mode is for all apps but got disappointed, it's for only system apps, so this is nice too. so continue with swift installer for black in all supported apps.
17) there is a blank between keyboard and the end of the screen. there was navigation bar on oreo but it looks strange on pie. maybe they should extend "move" option of keyboard.
18) still there is no option to import chrome passwords to samsung internet, or export/import samsung pass' data.
19) They moved game tools to notification area on games as unremovable.
19) they should bring back video button
advantages:
one ui is better for one hand usage.
they added "app info" to 3d touch (app shortcuts) back.
if u even disable rotating, if you use landscape in settings, a black hole will appear on the corner to rotate.
they added alternative option for aod to tap to show for 30 sec.
battery is almost same. little bit better.
system ram is about 500 mb, it was more than 1 gb (~900MB-1,2MB)
everything is rounded up.
4g+ video chat is now better.
i recommend backup everything and reset the phone if you are upgrading oreo to pie for better battery and lagless use.
some animations are better.
these are the things I can remember. of course you are free to agree or disagree with me. If you know my answers of my questions and have additional comments please write.
4) if we swipe up and hold, we get google assistant. Other ones are still exist.

1) if you find a way to disable the frame, it would be awesome to share it.
7) It's bullsh** indeed, the workaround is to use "ShortCutter" and its location toggle (you can choose between 4 modes).
17 made me going crazy so I installed gboard
I noticed that the multitasking mode sometimes is showing a weird animation showing for 0,1sec the apps in the app menu in the background

Question about icon Bluetooth :
When I activate Bluetooth and a device is connected, I have the Bluetooth logo that appears in the status bar on the home screen.
But : when I enable Bluetooth but no hardware is connected, the Bluetooth logo in the status bar of the home screen no longer appears, unlike version 8.0 Android.
As a result, if the Bluetooth remains activated, as the Bluetooth logo does not appear in the status bar, I no longer know if it is really activated or not. In concrete terms, if I don't use Bluetooth, I turn it off to hope for lower battery consumption, but since the logo no longer appears... you have to scan the screen down each time and check in the settings if Bluetooth has remained enabled or not: it's very annoying!
Does this function seem normal to you? (under 8.0, the Bluetooth logo appears as soon as it is activated, regardless of whether or not any equipment is connected).
I hope I've made myself understood, and thank you for letting me know if you see the same thing in yourself.

Mod to set different functions to swipe left and right on home screen

Hello fellow Android users.
I've always been obsessed with customizing the functionality of my devices to make it really practical to use.
I've been playing with the settings of the Xiaomi Redmi 9 for a week now and everything is set to perfection except one thing which is not available in the default settings but would be incredibly convenient, not only for me but for many people too.
I set all the apps I use in one single home screen (not multiple pages). The ones that don't fit there are all in one folder and that uses up only one button slot.
Since I don't have multiple pages for the apps, the swipe left and swipe right functions are available for other useful things, I'd like to set that up to be shortcuts to apps that I use a lot, like whatsapp and gmail. This would also free 2 slots in my home screen.
I suspect there's a way to do it, just don't know how and have tried several google searches like "how to assign left and right swipe functions on android home screen" or "how to customize left and right swipe on android home screen" and many other similar combinations of words. Found nothing.
Does anyone know if there's an app or a mod that allows you that level of customization? I'm a video editor and I'm not very educated in programing android apps or anything similar.
Hope someone can give me a hint. Thanks a lot in advance. Greetings from Barcelona, where many of us are locked down and unemployed :cyclops:
