S7 Edge sidebar clone for other phones? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anywhere an app that doesn't require root and it is compatible with Android MM that "emulates" the sidebar that is active on the S6 and S7 Edge, you know the little white thingy that's on top and it opens up when you swipe to left and it shows you either people, and onanother swipe a list of commonly used/pre-configured apps? Or am I missing it amongst all the apps that are available on XDA and Play Store? .
I would like the app to approach to the original feature as close as possible, if that's even achievable.
Excuse me again if I am missing out an already existing app .
Best regards!

Well, custom roms have a thing called App Side Bar, which is basically the same thing as the fancy Edge, but it was there before this new Edgy trend.
But I don't think you can add contacts to it.

Eh, I don't want to root and flash custom roms, but sometimes maybe something comes along to satisfy our needs.
Thanks anyways ????

[Q] Adding Mini-Apps

I love the idea of mini-apps, IMO its a big step forward into true multi tasking
...Is there a place to download more mini-apps?
...Are there any roms out that have modified/added to the mini-apps?
It would be really nice to have a choice, I would personally like to see a mini-browser added.

what exactly do you mean by "mini-apps"? widgets?
I think he talks about the addition in touchwiz for the galaxy tab 10.1. But AFAIK it is not possible to change them currently.

Ya I'm talking about the little apps you can pull up that were added in the touchwiz update
If only it was possible to change those - so far only calculator and calendar are any use (and task manager but quicker to hold the home icon). When I showed an ipad fan he was very impressed by them but right away wanted to know if you can change them. Mini browser would probably be asking too much but the notes could be useful if the implementation was more intuitive. Quick email program would be good too.

sorry, but i cannot get the point (really)
what's the difference between a "mini-app" and an app?
Mini apps are supplied with the Touchwiz software and are accessible from the Taskbar.
i dont see why it would be hard for a developer to change these
...there has to be a way

thanks for the video
so the only difference between a "mini-app" and a "normal app" is, that the mini-app is in the taskbar.
(so every app could be transformed into a mini-app if you just could pin it to the taskbar???)
'If' .... that's the thing, I don't think it's possible yet.

I planned on working on trying to develop new mini-apps, but then my Tab epic failed and I'm waiting for a new one from Samsung Not sure if it can be done, but we shall see.
Good luck with that, keep us informed!

No, the "mini-apps" are just that... Mini apps that pop up on top of what ever app your running at the time. Their not really the full app and you can move them around the screen to place them where you want them. Their more like widgets, just widgets that can be moved around easily.
Say your checking your email and you need to check some figures. You can pull up the mini bar, tap the calculator icon to bring up a small version of it. Then you can move it to one side or the other so you can see the numbers you need to check. "See the screen shot"
And all of the mini apps but the calculator and task manager, if you tap the arrow in the top left had corner will take you to the full app.
It would be nice to have the option to change the apps in the quick launch bar... but they wouldn't really work like the mini apps. The program developers would have to include the mini app like they do with apps that have widgets to use along with the apps.

now i've got it! thanks.
sounds really cool. it's clear that not every app can be a mini-app, but it'll be great if you can develop own mini-apps.
Yes you can change the apps and please stop calling them "mini" as they are each full blown apps.
Samsung is releasing the API to add apps into the launch tray.

Can change the apps? Please tell us how we can change then now, or do you actually mean that we'll be able to change them eventually, not now?
Edit: 'mini apps is fine by me.
Not sure when Samsung will update touchwiz to change the mini apps on the taskbar.
In the meantime you can try this new app if you like, but they are not mini apps to run in a multitasking way though.

Why would anyone want a stock JB ROM if it removes features like Multi Window, etc??

I understand why people want to flash stock JB custom ROMS (me always having been one of them, for 3 phones now), but in the case of the GS4, why?
You would lose actual useful Samsung features like Multi Window (works ridiculously well), WatchON (to utilize the IR blaster), the mostly better Samsung camera app, S Health (some ppl use), and even some of the smart features like gestures, S Voice, and the eye tracking stuff.
Don't most people want at least some of these? I would never want to lose Multi Window (first time having this, especially when using Samsung Multi Window Manager to use any apps with it), WatchON, and the camera app, even having been a stock custom ROM freak for a long time with other phones.
This is the first time I feel that rooting, deodexing, debloating, and a few theme mods are enough to satisfy me (for now) mainly because I want these factory apps and features.
Anyone else?

Ummmmm.....because I prefer stock AOSP over ALL that stuff combined?!?!?!?!
I have absolutely no use for any of the features you listed. Camera quality on AOSP will get there eventually.......and I don't use multi window.....and the other stuff is just bloat....
Just my opinion....
Your going to have people on both sides of this. Some want an AOSP like experience and consider all of these Samsung apps to be "Bloat".
IMO, I'd like to see a AOSP look and feel ROM, with some of the Samsung features in it. I'm sure someone will make something like that.

I agree, but honestly with some theming, Nova launcher, and a few app replacements, the phone on Touchwiz isn't much different whatsoever. I mean what, just the settings menus and some of the system apps? No big deal.
I don't get why anyone wouldn't want true multitasking like Multi Window provides (among the other things)...
Better lockscreen
Theme engine
More internal memory
More customization (although xposed is making that less of a difference)
Sometimes things like better Bluetooth stacks

Unfortunately no matter how small the ROM is you won't get any of that space back.
Then if there was a de-Touchwized ROM, I'd take that lol. I want to keep these things but yes I too hate the small differences in Touchwiz that aren't easily changeable without custom ROMing.
Also, I actually like the Touchwiz lock screen a lot, that sunlight effect is sick and something to show off the screen with, and you can still use the widgets just like in AOSP.

How is the multi-window different from just holding down Home to access recent apps? I know it puts a side slide-out bar on top of everything. Just curious.

I have removed almost all of the Samsung apps I can't stand them so yeah can't wait for a stock jb rom, oh and as for the watchon app.. It sucks, smart remote is way better and way more intuitive.

Yeah, I stand corrected. That is pretty slick.
I came to this phone from the galaxy nexus. I wanted something different from stock Android. Don't get me wrong I love stock Android just wanted something different. I don't use all the s app and all the air view and motion stuff. But there are some I like and use and from what I can tell there is a Rom that leaves all the features on it.

Hello XDA I’ve been away from android for some time; switched to iPhone for a bit, from the htc evo 4g. I have switched to Verizon and the galaxy s4 sense then and I want to make some changes to my phone (hence the post). I have rooted my device but haven’t put any custom roms or kernels on my s4 just different launchers. Here is a list of thing I want to change:
Quick disclaimer: some of my wording may be off, I don’t have my phone in front of me to check everything and do proper background research
Phone UI-I want to change the phone app entirely. Its ugly it’s white and it’s [for lack of a better word] fat and cartoonish. I hate the stock dialer and the in-call ui. It has to go; please if nothing else give me some ideas on how to change this! Im using ex dialer and contacts but that doesn’t change the in call experience.
Unread Notifications- I’m currently using nova launcher prime and action launcher pro the kicker is that neither have a proper unread counter for calls texts and emails. Nova works the best because it does in fact have an unread counter but it only works for phone and texts but not for Samsung emails which I use for both my Gmail and my exchange emails. It irks me; I’ve emailed the developer but haven’t heard anything back from him.
Wi-Fi- is there a way to move/add wifi to the notification panel? The panel being the quick access buttons on the top of the notification scroll down. I hate that is “floating” in the other part of the notification list.
Volume- how can I get rid of the volume alert I get when I have something plugged in to the headphone port? I feel that it’s the dumbest warning in the world and it’s even more annoying because it keeps coming back after each reboot (I think). We aren’t 5 years old we already know that loadnoises arnt good for our ears…
App drawer icon- I love the touchwiz app drawer icon and that’s probably the only thing I can’t live without. I’ve got a similar icon from a touchwiz icon pack but it’s not the same one. How can I extract it from touch wiz so that I can use it with various roms or launchers?
Google play- I buy things from Google play every now and again and would like to continue to do so. The only problem is, is that I can’t move the content over to the SD card I would like to store it there because 16gb can only hold so much. I saw that someone figured out how to move Google play music over to SD which is great but I want my magazines and movies on the SD too.
I would like to keep as many Samsung features as I can when I rom my device I enjoy a lot of the Samsung gimmicks that came with it; such as multi-window and the smart stay, view, scroll and pause it’s fun to play with.
Are there specific roms and kernels I need to use for my specific device? If so please refer me to the thread.
Is there a rom that adds a professional and sleek look to the device and adds the discussed features from above? If so what is it and where can I get it!?

Adding functionality to the Edge - Which apps and/or Custom ROMs to use?

My S6 Edge will be delivered in the next couple days and I'm gathering some info on how to get the most functionality out of the Edge. When looking at the Note Edge, the larger edge allowed a great deal of native functionality, like the swipe out app shortcuts, and swiping down for a widget bar with wifi/flashlight/etc toggles. I'm looking to have the same or greater functionality on the S6 Edge.
Here's a couple apps I've found that look to work well with the S6 Edge:
for app shortcuts, you add this as a feed: QuickLaunch: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...4-22-quicklaunch-feed-galaxy-s6-edge-t3090255
for app/widget shortcuts, usable anywhere without the toggle bar: SwipePad: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.conduction.swipepad.android
Anything else recommended as a favorite addon app for functionality?
I also plan on rooting immediately. Is there any recommendation for a Custom ROM that may have additional options along these lines? Or just, in general, any recommended ROMs I should consider installing right away?
Thanks guys!

Galaxy theme store for note 2?

I was just wondering if any one could port S6 r S6 edge theme store app to our beloved note 2?
& would it work or not...?
any flashable zip or apk, may be...
I can't say 100% because I'm not familiar with the S6 or the app of which you speak of but it would seem to me that Theme support needs to be built into the firmware and the theme changing app itself is only the front end of that whole system (kind of like the steering wheel, pedals and dashboard in car allow you to drive and operate it but are only a small part of it). Transposing the Theme app alone into a Note 2 firmware which has no theme support would be like taking that steering wheel out, sticking it on a couch and hoping the couch would take you places.
I can totally understand why you'd want Theme support though... Samsung's Note II UI is mind numbingly ugly. I have NII as well and am still on root stock FW as well. I personally don't want to flash a 3rd party rom. I've swapped out most of the samsung apps for more modern looking ones to refresh UI a bit (ADW launcher with marshmallow theme, google messenger/photos/calendar/chrome, k9 open source email client with daytime theme, true phone for dialer and contacts, VLC for video, PowerAmp with White Plastic theme for music, Clock L/Camera M from app store etc). 80% of the UI looks really good now: flat, bright and modern. The only holdouts are the notification menu, the system dialog boxes, the part of the dialer that actually makes the phone calls and the system preference app. I'm actually seriously considering decompiling these apks and modding the UI to make it look like Marshmallow or Lolli. I'd probably post them if I do. I'm still on 4.1.2 though and I don't know how many people are still on JB for the note 2.
If you decide to install 3rd party apps to modernize your phone, be sure to read very carefully the permission section (especially the Misc part) before installing them. The fewer permissions they need the better. If an application is asking you for a permission that doesn't make sense for it, install something else. I would highly recommend a firewall to block internet access to apps that have no business going on the net (like camera, dialer, contacts, clock, launcher etc). DroidWall is an excellent firewall, bit of a pain in the ass to setup initially but totally worth it.
