HTC 10 Verizon root thread - Verizon HTC 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

This will be a place to discuss and collaborate on any progress towards a root, bootloader unlock, s-off, or any combination of the such for the Verizon HTC 10. I will regularly update this thread with any progress and links to tools required.
What we know
Verizon removed the "Enable oem unlock" option from the developer settings
Using htcdev was forbidden by verizon which makes us require something such as SuperCID
What we have
We have We don't have
Root
Bootloader Unlock
S-Off
@jcase and @beaups has pulled of complete s-off with the vzw HTC 10 via Sunshine!
Current method
The current method of getting s-off and root is by @jcase and @beaups sunshine app at http://theroot.ninja/download.html
NOTE: when sunshine asks, turn the screen on and off or it won't work
Notes requested by @jcase
*Do NOT go s-on or relock, as you will have to use Sunshine again
*Taking the OTAs as they come out is your choice and yours alone. If you are already s-off, meaning you sent your phone to @jcase, then you can take OTAs with no risk. S-Off cannot be undone unless you manually do so, so no ota will remove it .
If you are not s-off yet, the release version and the first and only ota works so far. If you take future OTAs without s-off, you run the risk that @jcase's method may be patched.
*The new update has patched Sunshine, but you can still downgrade and root following this guide. https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...an2017-root-unlock-s-off-verizon-htc-t3531996

I'm excited for this. Is there a bounty or anything?

No bounty that I've seen has been started yet, but if someone wants to start one it would probably encourage the devs to find a creative way to get temproot. If we get temproot, sunshine will hopefully be easy to make work on vzw, which will give us s off, then supercid, then unlock.

Keeping my fingers crossed. Probably won't happen though unless it's with a Java card like on the One m9. But after all, it'd only been out on Verizon for a few days. We shall see

Get a bounty started, or ask someone to, and I'm sure @jcase or someone similar will find a creative way to pull it off.

Hopefully so. I think jcase already has it done for the other variants. I feel like Verizon is always the last because of extra steps. It may not happen though since they like to lock their devices down.

Thanks @jcase for the dedication to the project! I have sent in a donation to help with this effort. I hope more users who wish to benefit from this work do the same! Looking forward to the progress in the upcoming weeks.
EDIT:
jcase is not accepting donations for this project. Please support buy purchasing a license when available!

Can't wait to see what happens. Would be awesome not to have to ship my phone off for 4-5days again. Not getting my hopes up after the m9 but crossing my fingers!

I just dont feel I'm acting ethical taking a donation to fund a project that we are going to sell, and we also see a lot of people take donations for things never released, so I feel taking donations before release is just making that the norm.
I do appreciate it however!

I appreciate your stance and honesty! I'll just have to wait to support with a license purchase then.
I am keeping my phone in a stock, un-updated, un-activated state (haven't even gone thought the setup wizard). My thinking is that keeping it virgin will make it easier to crack. Is this reasoning justified? Do you see any risk in activating/updating and using it? My fear is inadvertently updating security measures that make the unlock process more difficult/impossible. While I can still happily use my M7, it's killing me having my new 10 sitting in the box! But, if there is a potential benefit down the road, its a hardship I can endure.

I think this is clear that HTC will not let us have S-OFF unless its from a developer

Why is my security still on (S-On) after I have unlocked my bootloader?
Your device is shipped with Security on (S-ON) to protect your system software configuration (such as the bootloader, radio, boot, recovery, system and others). After you have unlocked the bootloader, however, you will have lifted the restrictions on boot, recovery and system. This means you can customize boot, recovery and system images on your phone as you desire. You can easily see that you have successfully unlocked the bootloader by looking at the top of the screen when entering the bootloader screen. Security is left on to protect things like the radio, and SIM lock.
If you should require support, please feel free to contact us via the support section of our website, http://www.htc.com

I've also email them hopefully we'll be heard..I suggest everyone email them we need a joint effort from the community they wont have a choice but to listen.

I wonder if HTC is waiting for ICS and then let something "leak" to obtain s-off.

That'a actually another reason why I don't want to rush to obtain s-off because even if we get it we may lose it with the OTA. Would be our luck. We know that HTC read these so what's to stop them from being like "Huh. This Binary100100 bastard figured out how to get around s-on. Let's patch that with ICS! That'll show them!"
you have a point.. but what about if your wrong? i hope your right though

No, and most likely never will because it invalidates the very reason S-on is enabled. We've (the community) always developed a way to bypass the signature as far back as I can remember, but they've figured out a way to make it more difficult to accomplish with the Amaze.
I think if we make enough noise, perhaps they'll create a tool that allows overwriting the signature. My optimism always gets the best of me!

I believe its the lack of developers for the amaze, the rezound is newer than our phone and I believe they have achieved S-off, It's hard to say because that phone is a CDMA phone, but never the less if they have figured out a way to make it more difficult it should be for all the new HTC phones, which doesn't seem to be the case.

looking for possible testers

I am looking to bring my GS3 BoneStockROM to the Galaxy S4. I don't own the device so I am looking for some willing testers.
I would like to eventually sell my SG3 and get a SG4 but currently don't have the money.
If you are willing to test please post or PM me.
I want to try and bring over a few features that I ported such as Blocking Mode and Call/Message Block that we should have but Verizon decided to take away.
I have them both fully working and ported to their rightful Verizon applications for the SG3, and would like to try and possibly get them working on this phone as well.
It's very cumbersome building a ROM/MOD/theme/etc. for a device you don't own, as things can't get done nearly as fast, and sometimes not at all. Having some willing to test, we can ideally link up on Gtalk to help move things along.
Thank you for your time.

UPDATE: Here is the unlocked bootloader dump. (2GB)

(Separate post for visibility)
This post on Reddit, shows a claimed "fully operational prototype" that the OP's father received from a friend who works for Samsung.
Here is the about screen.
I worked with the poster, over the weekend, to pull a system dump:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23060877490004987
The .rar contains the MMCBLK's, as well as the contents of /system as requested by Metallice in the original xda thread.
Please let me know if anything else is needed.
Edit: Title change (thanks 2swizzle)
Big thanks to Redditor iDubWheniStep for his patience and cooperation.

I don't think he was ripping anyone saying he's "owed anything". Just exhibiting frustration on a locked bootloader. I too had hoped Sammy would not have gone this route, and more development would continue. Those of us on VZW should come to expect this now, as they are nazis with the bootloader. Bootloader unlock is not a selling point for me, but it does make it more fun.

It is frustrating for those of us on ME7 not to have an unlocked bootloader, but I for one am grateful for the options we DO have right now... you can still root and use Xposed to customize to your liking or use Safestrap and flash a decent amount of roms. I will keep waiting patiently for someone to find an exploit, but in the meantime just shut up and enjoy what options we're even lucky enough to have. You picked Verizon, did you really expect freedom?

Sounds promising to say the least. I can not wait for root to get my Viper4Android working again!!!
Its my understanding that jcase's root is a much broader root than just our phone and that is part of the reason he is holding off (In addition to family issues and other obligations). He would rather wait a month or so and then release the root which can be used on potentially a bunch of phones than release it now and have it work on Sprint's G3 and let the other manufacturers patch it before they release.
Sucks for us but I understand.. hopefully someone else releases something if not I think jcase will still hook us up but he wants the most bang for the buck.. rooting a bunch of phones.. (No, not money, although he would probably get some of that too.)

I don't see the need in a "broader" root. Every other LG G3 variation already has root as I understand it. Reading between the lines, I believe that jcase has a specialty in mobile security exploits and already has one in mind for the Sprint G3. He just hasn't had time to explore it further, because he's a busy guy and has had some family illness issues. It sounds like he plans to try and finalize it in a couple of weeks.

By broader I mean it can potentially root a bunch of other phones. No point in releasing it just for Sprint's G3 when he could wait and potentially help a lot more people. Not just LG G3 phones, other manufacturers as well.. so its probably not something specific to LG or Sprint but Android as a whole. Yes, he is a mobile security expert. Its my understanding he is currently in Las Vegas teaching people about how to exploit Android devices.

I'll pitch in $25!
I need root because I miss the amazing Xposed modules, ViPER4Android, etc. that I had on my previous phone. Root adds a lot more functionality to any phone, but I believe even more to our huge HAM2.

I'll pitch in $25 as well.
I don't "need" root, but I WOULD like the option!
I'm in for $25
I'm good for $20. Love this phone, completely spoiled by the battery life and screen size.
I'm in for $30....so many reasons why I need root....
Count me in!
Tried Towelroot, No go. Says it's rooted but it is not. No go with Kingo either. I would like to try it via Fastboot but in fear of a brick I will not dare.
Trying with Latest Kingo updated version..... On 3rd reboot... It's certainly trying.
Still no developers interested even with the bounty?
I'm good for $25.

I really think this post should've been made in a more populous area of XDA, where developers would see this.

I have Contacted Huawei Direct. We will see if they get back to me. Worth a shot!
We just need 10 more people to pledge $10 and a developer could get themselves a HAM2 for development.

Amen to that
Guys,
I have a question. I saw on http://www.theunlockingcompany.com/index.php/huawei-ascend-mate-2-unlock-code.html that they say they can unlock the HAM2 between 12 and 24 hours. Do you think if I purchased this unlocking code that the bootloader would unlock as well?
It's worth a shot, they only charge $12.99
Currently my HAM2 is already unlocked to work with any carrier, I was just hoping that purchasing unlock code would also unlock bootloader. What do you all think? I dont think doing this will unlock bootloader but still, had to ask the question.
