Enable Quick Charge 2.0 - Honor 5X Questions & Answers

Since the Honor 5X uses a Qualcomm Snapgragon 616 which features Quick Charge 2.0, would it be possible to unlock this feature by software? The necessary hardware is already there...

maybe the custom kernels can do that.

I posted a similar question here. Looks like Huawei has disabled a subset of the SD616 features. Presumably this is to safe cost on this affordably priced handset. What we'd all really like to know is whether Huawei has saved cost on licenses, materials, or both. I hope it's licenses only so our devs can work their magic and unlock the goods for us.

if we can get our hands on a nandroid backup of the chinese market version then maybe our developers can port it over

I am a participant of Android 6.0 + EMUI 4.0 beta testing for Honor 5x and I have already asked Honor to implement this one in the release. I am not sure whether they would do it. I have also asked to enable OTG support with the update.

Can you enable OTG by changing the build prop line:
ro.config.support_otgstorage from "false" to "true"
and
ro.mmi.otg_test from "false" to "true"
I change the value of these 2 lines but I have yet to test with a USB drive with OTG connector.

Doesnt it support it already? My Phone doesnt charge faster with a 2-3amp charger it doesnt go over 1050ma with ampère app

According to this site it does. but I don't know for sure. I do know my phone charges exceptionally fast. The charger that comes with it is model#hw-050100u01. I'll have to measure the voltage/amp when I get home.

The Honor 5X doesn't support Quick Charge.
I have an Anker 18W Quick Charge adapter (2.5Amp) with an Anker Powerline. My phone charges much faster with that than stock charger (1Amp) and stock cable. It takes about 3 hours with the stock charger, and about 2 hours with the Anker charger.
Your USB charging cable makes a difference. Thicker 24AWG cables will charge your phone faster. I can't post links yet - but look up any micro USB Anker Powerline cables on Amazon, and a 2.5Amp Anker Charger.

According to this article, we would beable to charge our phones at a maximum of 24 watts. I tested the watts on the stock charger(#hw-050100u01) and I was charging at 7 watts. 7 watts still being pretty fast, nothing compared to 24 watts. My stock charger charged at .9 amps.
So yes Quick Charge is definately disabled.

I recently received the CHOETECH qc 3.0 wall charger to test out and review. I gotta say I love their products. I have a fast wireless chager, a qc 2.0 power bank and the qc 3.0 wall charger. While I don't have any qc 3.0 compatible devices her, this wall charger is awesome. It's very well made, sleek, and charges as fast as the OEM charger from ssung for my note 5. Love love love CHOETECH and all their products and this new wall charger promises to be of the same great quality I have come to know and expect from CHOETECH. Highly recommended!

Quick Charge as most of you know, allow for high levels of current to flow to the battery, in an attempt to maximize its charging efficiency. Quick Charging also tend to charge their batteries at higher voltages, allowing for a higher rate of power transfer through commonly found cables. The downside to all this is that it can limit the life of your battery since they get hotter. This is the BIG selling point between 3.0 and 2.0, not necessarily charge times but battery life over the long haul. Different batteries require different charging voltages and QC 2.0 supported four modes at varying power levels, 5 volts/2amps, 9V/2A, 12V/1.67A, and a 20 volt option. QC 3.0’s uses voltage between 3.2V and 20V at 200mV increments, allowing for a wider selection of voltages.
This is useful as it reduces the amount of energy wasted during charging. Wasted energy is a big deal because all that extra power would be lost as heat. See, that's what makes the battery run warm thereby limiting the longevity of the battery's life. By having the wider range of voltage you waste less power and that results in less heat, which for you means longer battery life a year from now.
When I tried this with the Note 5, I didn't notice a significant increase in charging time but I did notice less warmth on the back of the phone. Does that prove it's working? I'm not sure but if the option exists, I'd rather try to extend my battery life if possible.

I just check Qualcomm official website. Now only Anker and Tronsmart are certificated by Qualcomm (Quick Charge 3.0) among the above brands. https://www.qualcomm.com/documents/quick-charge-device-list More and more accessories brands will release quick charge 3.0 products in 2016.
I reviewed the Tronsmart QC 3.0 you have linked in the op. It's a quality peice and even charging my QC 2.0 LG V10, it's a lot faster than the oem charger.

Hi Everyone,
Just got this charger for my Note 5 ( and soon to own nexus 6P) and I love it! Its awesome to have an additional fast charge with me at work and at home. Now that I have the Note 5 and there is no removable battery I am always plugging in so having an extra Quick Charge at work is great! One of my biggest fears after reading these forums for so many years has been battery management and using the correct plug with each device that I own and with this being Qualcomm 3.0 but reversible to Quick charge 2.0 I Love it, I just carry one plug now (actually I just leave it at the office) and use it for multiple devices! I know you all know that Choetech makes a great product as I have referenced this forum in most of my decision making, and have since purchased many items form the company including the Fast Charge Qi Wireless Charging pad ( I did not get the additional quick charge cable option as I just use my Note 5 plug) but this Charger works great with the Qi Fast Charge Wireless Pad as well if you are in the market for one and if you buy them separately it is not that much more money, to me it was definitely worth it!
With that being said, your forums have helped me for many many years and I just joined and starting writing, so please feel free to let me know if I can answer any questions about this product or any product that I may have. I really love these forums, and I am very happy to be a part of them!

ChoeTech 3.0 Quick Charger
I had the opportunity to review the ChoeTech Quick Charge 3.0 wall charger and I have to say that I am really impressed with the upgrade from the 2.0. I’ve been using the 2.0 for about two months now and I LOVE the rate at which it charges. I would have to say that the most impressive thing about the Quick Charge 3.0 is that I get to 50% battery at bout 7-10 minutes faster than I do on the 2.0! I used to only get to about 35-40% after a 30 minute charge but with the 3.0 I am hitting nearly 50% in 35 or so minutes! Needless to say, I have been very impressed. Another feature that I’ve kind of been raving about is the fact that the USB cable can be entered into the charger block UPSIDE DOWN! I can’t tell you how often I have to fumble around in the dark before bed trying to get the cable back into the charging block (and we all know we put it in the wrong way first EVERY time) but now I just put it in no matter the direction and it just works. Not to mention, the charger comes with a USB-C cable and while I don’t have a phone that requires one, I am glad to have one as I suspect I will one day soon.  I truly couldn’t ask for more! Great product, works perfectly. I’ve become a real fan of the ChoeTech products and look forward to seeing what other awesome things they come out with soon!

External Batteries?

What external battery will work with the Galaxy S8 considering it has USB C now? There was a mess awhile back with people arguing over what was safe and what isn't. Will popular external battery brands such as Anker PowerCore+ be safe or work with the new Galaxy S8?
I've never had a problem with any of my external batteries and any of my phones. I think if you stick with a decent brand, you'll be ok. Just don't use those crappy ones you get from gas stations or whatever.
What's really important is the usb C cable you gonna use, i've been using external batteries with my lg g5 without any issue so far because i keep using the og cable . Don't use any cheap usb C cable or it might kill your device.

I have used my Anker Powercore+ 10050 and Powercore 20100 with my Galaxy S7, S6, Pixel, Nexus 5x, Nexus 6P, Lumia 950, HP Elite X3, Note 5, and my iPhone 6, 6s and iPad Air2 and Air devices just fine. I imagine the S8 shouldn't be a problem.
For my devices that use USB-C, I got an Anker "USB-C to USB 3.0" 3ft that is on their web site (ordered via Amazon). From what I understand using a USB-A to USB-C cable doesn't allow for "fast charging." But it does allow me to charge my Pixel, Nexus, Elite X3, etc at "standard rate" just fine.
I'm not sure what "standard" the S8 is supposed to use for "fast charging" . I don't know if it will be QC2.0, QC3.0, QC4.0, or the same USB-C standard that the Pixel, HP Elite X3, Nexus 5x, etc support. So I don't know if I'll need to upgrade my battery pack to one with USB-C port on it, like the PowerCore+ 20100 USB-C Port.

I had purchased one of these a while ago for an older phone. You can just reuse the old ones- no need to buy a newer one.
Don't buy sketchy Type-Cs. If you are unsure, Anker is always reliable.

If it's anything like the note 7, any battery pack that has a USB A port and supports fast charging will support fast charging on the Gs8. The pixel uses type C power delivery which is really different from Quick Charge. I used the same battery pack from my note 5 but using a type C cable and had no issues with fast charge. Another thing to remember is that if you have a crappy cable, no fast charger will make it charge fast. The oem cable is always a good place to start.

But that is just it... *IF* the S8/S8+ use QuickCharge 2.0 or 3.0 over USB-C, then sure, any battery pack with a USB-A port that supports QC2/3 should fast charge the S8/S8+ with a quality USB-A to USB-C cable.
But if the S8/S8+ instead uses the USB-C fast charge standard that the Pixel, Nexus 6P, etc use (which is NOT QC2.0/3.0) then its another matter. A Battery Pack with USB-A ports likely wont fast charge the S8/S8+.
When I initially posted, I saw nothing speaking of which spec the S8/S8+ uses. I have since seen a few unboxing videos on Youtube which show the S8/S8+ wall charger. It appears to be a QC2 compatible, with the same specs (output voltage/current) as the wall charger that comes with the Galaxy S7. So if that is correct, then yes, any battery pack that supports QC2 should continue quick charging the GS8/S8+ . And the question now becomes... What's you're talking about is type C power delivery (which is what the pixel supports and uses for fast charge if I'm not mistaken.) QC 2/3 is not compatible with type c power delivery. I think the voltage on type c can handle more, so it may charge faster than micro USB, but not as fast as Quick Charge. If you just need a new battery, I'd look for one with type C input/output as well as quick charge 3 and USB power delivery. This article helped a lot when I was looking for a battery pack for the Note 7.

Thank your for the link, that will be handy for a few of my friends, I might have even read that a while back too(it looks familiar, but I can't recall). I understand the differences. I was trying to answer the OP's question at the time saying I wasn't sure what standard over USB-C the S8/S8+ was using.. so I didn't know which batteries would "fast charge" the S8/S8+ but they all should work to charge at some rate..
I'm set with batteries.. I already have that RAV (since I have a Pixel, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, HP Elite X3, Lumia 950, Huawei p9 for work which all use USB-C), and a few Anker and Aukey in various sizes/capacities that support 5V/2.4A and QC2/3 for my Samsung and apple phones/tablets.
As far as I can tell, with USB-C "Power Delivery" we don't need quickcharge anymore. PD is the new industry standard equivalent of QC, is being pushed by Google, is the only one fully and officially compatible with the USB-C spec and will likely be REQUIRED in future versions of android (https://arstechnica.co.uk/gadgets/2...mm-quick-charge-with-android-incompatibility/). There is no longer any reason to be looking for Quick Charge unless you want to continue to use your existing equipment. What you should be looking for is Power Delivery compatible equipment and cables instead, as they will be future proof. Once Google force PD to be used in future versions of android, QuickCharge will die (thankfully) and we can have a single charging spec that everyone can have guaranteed compatibility with without paying royalties to Qualcomm. Frankly its great news that the S8 has PD (although I am not entirely sure if it is actually using it for fast charging or not), it means I can buy PD gear without having to go out and buy QC stuff thatll probably be obsolete in a year or so.

Where did you see that the gs8 has USB power delivery? Also I dont see quick charge going away especially since quick charge 4.0 supports USB power delivery. http://www.anandtech.com/show/10846/qualcomm-announces-quick-charge-4
I would love to see a single standard adopted and Google forcing oems to use USB-PD is awesome, I don't seen quick charge giving up that easy.

I read in a couple of places but nothing official and I am not sure if it applied to the SD835 or the Exynos as well, I would imagine both support it but whether Samsung has enabled it is perhaps another matter, something we could do with finding out! Samsung as clear as ever saying it has "fast charging" which means absolutely nothing. It obviously charges quickly, but what bluddy charging standard is it using when it does it!? I have heard that it only has QC2.0 not 3.0 or 4.0, which isn't particularly fast so I suspect it might be using PD for its max speeds.
It's really starting to piss me off. These devices are out there, quite a few people now have them and we still have unanswered BASIC questions like what charging method is it using and does it support UHS-II or UHS-III SD cards. Samsung support are clueless as always, the documentation tells us absolutely nothing and so far I haven't found an answer to either despite hours of searching!

I know I read the sd835 supported USB-PD, but I thought the Exynos didn't. Either way, every video I've seen makes it seem like we're only getting QC 2.0.

Well... my S8+ arrived today... So I did some tests to confirm...
As suspected, QC2 over USB-A to USB-C cable (one was included with the GS8+) is how it rapid charges.
Using the GS8+'s cable with my older Anker Powercore+ 10050 (which supports QC2.0 output), the S8+ fast charges. Using Choetech and Anker USB-A to USB-C cables and a Tronsmart 5-port multi-usb charger w/QC2.0 support, the GS8+ also reports fast charging.
Using the USB-C to USB-C cable that came with my pixel, and the USB-C port on my RAVPower 20100mAh (link in an earlier post), or my Pixel's wall adapter, the GS8+ reports "charging". So Samsung is NOT supporting USB-C Power Delivery like is found on the Pixel, Nexus 6P, etc.

Short of timing a charge cycle using a known QC2 charger vs using a known QC3 charger, is there a way to tell? (The Ravppwer battery I have supports QC3 and I have Anker QC2 and QC3 wall chargers, and of course the Tronsmart QC2 wall charger and Anker PowrCore+ that supports QC2)
The wall plug included with the GS8+ is the same as the one with my GS7. Based on listed outputs, it's QC2. From what I understand QC3 goes down to 3.2v which isn't listed as output voltage. if the GS8/8+ supported QC3, I would have hoped they included a charger that supported it.

Quick Charge 3.0 is really more about efficiency and battery health then charging faster. Since Samsung fast charge is really just a subset of Quick Charge 2.0 anyway, it is possible for the phone to support 3.0 even with the same charger in the box.
In the end the only way we'll really know for sure is if Samsung ever confirms it or someone on this forum uses and in-line voltage meter while charging the phone to see if the voltage changes in 200 mv increments that quick charge 3.0 supports

Does Poco really support Quick Charge 4.0+?

As Poco India says on tweet that it supports quick charge 4, i bought this up. But unfortunately i don't see a significant improvement on charging over my stock quick charge 3 supported charger. Well, i have tried different mod that are floating around in different telegram group of poco. They do help to certain degree but not that much of a difference. Why is that? Can the developer create any mod to make the quick charge 4.0 to it's full potential??
You can made a mod to increase the charging speed (in some custom kernels) but not up to the Quick Charge 4.0 standard because QC 4 has certain Voltage and Watts that QC 3 doesn't have (Let's say QC 3 up to 20w and QC 4 up to 40w)
When buying Pocophone F1, only a Quick Charge 3.0 charger is included instead of QC 4

Yep and of course, finding a good and authentic QC 4 charger is hard and expensive even here in the Philippines, finding QC4 charger is a pain in the ass.

I don't really know because you bought a charger that believed has QC 4 supported but in the official list of chargers that has QC 4, it doesn't show up there. I just checked the specs of your charger and it has the highest output of 30watts. I think you just bought a QC 4+ charger.
(QC 4 and QC4+ has a little different specs or features)

Nowhere in the description of the item says the charger support quick charge 4.0.…as far as i know there's a difference between quick charge 4 and USB PD (power delivery)

One thing i noticed is that the charge never exceeds 18watts.. So that means maybe within software it's limited to quick charge 3.0..
Qualcomm has certified that Poco F1 meets the hardware necessities for quick charge 4/4+. This doesn't necessarily mean it will be able to, because it's in the hands of the OEMs that manufacture our phone. Xiaomi has intentionally kept the charging voltage to low on the Poco F1, which if provided, can be easily sorted out through software updates. But I don't think Xiaomi will do that, because it's bad for their business. If you cramp up everything on such a budget phone, there will be a decrease in the purchase of their other flagships that they have provided. So in order to keep this balance between their flagship and budget oriented devices, Xiaomi has intentionally kept the Poco F1 out of quick charge 4/4+ territory. Xiaomi did announce after a couple of days that Poco F1 supports quick charge 4/4+, but only shortly it was taken down. So don't waste your time looking up for chargers that support quick charge 4/4+, the Poco F1 will never be able to quick charge in 4/4+ if Xiaomi doesn't provide such tweeks in the phone through software updates.

Aside from the possibility of it being limited by the software, battery temperature has a major impact on how fast you can charge your device. Try watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh9OJQZinFQ
From his experiment, you can clearly see that Poco does support QC4 or QC4+ (I don't know what's the difference, but I guess 4+ is better?) and it's able to charge at a whopping 30+Watts just from lowering the ambient temperature alone as opposed to getting about 12 to 13 Watts from QC 3.0
As far as I know, there's only one charger that has worked for POCO to enable QC 4+. But seeing that this charger is nearly impossible to buy and is also quite expensive at the same time.
There is a post here in the forum I saw around a year ago where someone bought this charger and tested it. And he claims that it does indeed work.
He also did clarify that the benefits are little to none.
QC 4+ is mostly a theoretical upgrade to QC 3. Most phones don't ever reach the full QC 4+ or even 4 specifications.
We are limited by the battery technology of our time, where faster charges result in more heat. Which is why even though most phones released today are certified for 4+ they usually still ship with a 3 charger.
Other brands like VOOC are able to get so high is because they use dual battery cells.

It does say if you scroll down on its specs it's a QC4 charger, but I assumed the described output would be a sum of both USB ports working simultaneously.

Hi, I have one. For it to work properly you have to have the cable of more than 30w.
Load much faster than the original that comes in the box. I did a quick test from 75% to 100% with the phone turned off and charged in 25min; so you can assume if it's fast or not.

I suspect that Turbo Charge only happens with the 27W factory charger.
Because my Hama QC4+ charger, certified by Qualcomm, charges definitely faster than the 18W charger found in the package, but does not say Charge Fast or even Charge Turbo.

Call me crazy but I think it will charge the device at 27W speed.
A lot of people don't seem to realize but the "Xiaomi Turbo Charger 27W" is actually QC3, not QC4+, and it does charge the device at 27W. If you find a QC4+ charger that supports 27W and up, you will still get 27W charging but you won't see "Charge Turbo" because it will use the better, newer charging standard.
This can make charge turbo QC 3.0 and it's cheaper and with more ports:

Yeah but it can only charge at standard QC3 speeds, aka 18W at max. 9V/2A like the original one does. But the original one can also do 12V/1.5A. So it does not "Turbo Charge".
Careful many poster here are confused. My BELKIN true QC4.0+ never ever charged over 3200mA and averaged out at under 2200mA. Posters who speak about things without testing their theories are really frustrating. Do yourself a favor don't believe this phone accepts QC4 or QC 4.0+ (at least not @July 2019) only QC 3.0 NON FAKE xiaomi 27w can do the 4600mA + it would seem. Turbo charging is required for extremely rapid charge times. Make sure you get OFFICIAL 20V 1.35A from Xiaomi for Turbo Charge sustained charge and under one hour 0--100%
I also purchased a QC 4.0+ Hama DC charger cause Xiaomi doesn't make a DC charger to my knowledge. Guess what ; 18w ish charging speeds .. no Fast or Turbo classification ...

I also have the Baseus charger mentioned above (BS-EU906), the variant with 2 usb A ports.
When I charge with the cable from my samsung galaxy tab S5e it charges with a bit over 4200mA 20w-21w.
But when I charge with my Baseus 2m 5a capable cable (CATSS-B0G), it never goes above 3400mA ~14w.
It still chargers fast, but it is not what was advertised. Both the cable and charger are rated for QC3.
Baseus GaN charger 65W + Baseus 5A cable reaches 5000mA in Ampere, which is assuming 5V (that's what Ampere is assuming), equals to 25W. The fact is voltage in QC is never stable, it's the factor that allows it to dynamically supply power based on various parameters: battery temp, device temp, battery capacity and so on. If you have a USB-C USB doctor (and it should be more accurate than any software based monitoring) you can watch yourself that both the voltage and current are alternating constantly.

RN9P/S only support 18W charging out of the box but RN9P Max support 33W charging. Besides the cameras, both phones have similar specs. Could the devs technically modify the phone (software not hardware) to enable the 33W charging? Would be great if I don't have to wait 2 hours to charge the phone.
But one thing to remember here is the charger that comes with RN9P/S only supports up to 22.5W charging so you will have to buy a new charger that supports 33W.

You got a device with a battery that last really long. You'll arrive at the end of the day with a great amount of charge and you can connect it on the charger overnight.
What do you need to charge it in 1 hour for?
Just to ruin your battery?
Is it certain that the 9s/9pro doesn't support 33W out of the box, and isn't just limited by the 22W charger?
My redmi note 7 charges much faster with a qc 4.0 charger than with the stock one, they just cut corners on the charger to make it more affordable.
