VZW How to use unlocked model on VZW - Verizon HTC 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

So the solution to get an unlocked 10 working on verizon is like this..
Must have already active sim card***
Must be S-OFF**** AND STAY S-OFF while using this radio
Boot to bootloader
- fastboot flash the vzw radio in bootloader mode (download here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24539885398392983)
fastboot flash radio vzw_pme_radio.img
fastboot reboot
When phone boots go into cellular networks and make sure radio select is global.
Then enter secret menu by opening dialer and dialing *#*#4636#*#*
and chose the option "CDMA/EvDOGSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto"
At this point, you should have data/calls/texts if your sim was already active. If not reboot and re-test. Advanced calling features obviously won't work at the start of this.. but I know for certain can be re-added by our dev community. One verizon dev says he can do this day one. Clock has started homeboy.....
Note this was a collaborative effort here and some very helpful folk whom i have the greatest respect for completed this for the community. @beaups was the first to rock a carbon grey unlocked phone on the verizon network and as such deserves the credit for this...

Again D and team. thank you! I was losing hope quickly with the unlocked working (probably a bit prematurely I'll admit) but is there a place where I can send a donation when I get payed? Attempting tomorrow with sunshine and then following this guide! Halaleiuja! I think that's how you spell it?

Thank you guys, this is fantastic

For those of us with both a VZW and an unlocked model, which should we keep?

Not a dev, nor do I have a HTC 10, but I would say the unlocked would be a better bet. Support straight from HTC as you bought directly from them, unlocked so it can be used anywhere (don't know if Verizon region locks etc) and more likelihood of custom software.

One more thing, a handset purchased directly from HTC has Uh Oh protection, a Verizon unit does not.

@dottat OK so I am coming from a Verizon M7 and the sim card I have is a different size. Am I screwed? Can I do everything else then go in and get a new sim after the fact? I tried yesterday before the solution and they were going to give me the correct sim, but of course couldn't get it to register and wouldn't let me have the sim.

I would say go into corporate Verizon store, tell them that you were directed by customer service on the phone to get a new nfc-enabled nano SIM in order to activate your htc10. They will just ask for your account info and attach that SIM cards number to your account and tell you that you need to contact customer service over the phone again in order to try activation. Kinda funny as That's what one of the customer service reps told me was the reason the unlocked version's activation was not working on Verizon that I needed a new sim. Just did this 2 days ago
Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk

so for us coming from the m8, will the nano sim work? or is there now a smaller/different sim?

Do you have another line on the account with a different phone that does have the correct sim? If so you could get another sim for that phone, and you can activate it yourself. (or if they activate it for you, you can use the old sim for it.) Just needed a device to allow the activation for the new sim.

Hmmm, I'll check when I get home, I have 5 phones, but not sure if they have the smaller sim, 3 of them are basic flip phones for business. Not sure if any of them would be the NFC enabled Sims though, would be best if I could follow the guide then have them try to activate the card after the fact. I'm not an expert, but I don't really see any blocker to that route.

Does this process need to be repeated every time a new ROM is flashed? Or once the device is whitelisted with VZW should you be good to go?

It will likely require the vzw radio to support it however that's not a normal item flashed during rom flashing so unless you manually update firmware back to unlocked you should be OK.

I would s-off sooner rather than later. Just s-off. Factory reset. Take ota. Then flash radio, twrp etc.

Dangit, Dot, now I don't know what to do. I just ordered a Verizon 10 when I saw Jcase and his crew got s-off and root on it. But then I read where they're not going to be able to release a do-it-yourself version any time soon. The experience of sending my M9 to you was flawless and not expensive, but on the other hand I'd rather have the unlocked phone. The sim from my M9 would do the trick, correct? Any advice on which way to go?

SIM Unlock for US networks

I don't really know a lot about SIM related stuff, so I apologize...
Can the Rezound be SIM unlocked for US networks? The only thread I've found on another site says no but I think the repliers were referring to bootloader unlocking, not SIM. I am S-Off if that matters..just don't want to spend money on those sites that use IMEI to unlock, then get nowhere.

You don't need to SIM unlock it. Just put a different SIM in it and it'll work.

if you're on the newest firmware and radio then itll work as it adds the global capablities to it.just pop a regular sized sim in it and itll work,
tested with a t-mobile sim and it works.

I read elsewhere that the sim had to be activated on a prepaid phone first. Not sure of that is correct but something to look into.

Just to be sure about the specifics.
HTC rezound on the leaked 4.03.605.2 ruu
You put in a T-Mobile sim card in the rezound
And you had voice calling, texting, mms, and data working?
You didn't need to modify anything in the phone, change settings, add a T-Mobile apn, root, or Rom the phone?
It will be nice if you will write a short "how to" for moving a rezound onto USA T-Mobile.
Also were there any frequency mode restrictions?
Data speed was good?
Thanks,
Howard
Thanks guys...will keep messing with it.
Verizon would not give me an unlock code because according to them the phone isn't capable yet.
Rezound is globally capable and works on other US carriers

The FCC ruling that Verizon is responding to by making the Rezound, Razr, Droid 4, etc. globally capable also opens the phones up for use by other carriers. This was "Big Red's" initial impetus for not unlocking the phones native features. So yes, you can use this phone on Tmobile's network.

Have you tried to enter T-Mobile's APN?
It won't save and show in the list.
It appears Verizon locked it to only use Verizon's APN?
when booted into the bootloader there is a simlock item on the menu.
if one has s-off and an appropriate config.dat file on the removable microSD card it is supposed to SIMM unlock, so one doesn't get that sim locked picture on the phone after inserting another vendor's SIMM card.
this information is from reading, not from doing it.
I'm running T-Mobile US (EDGE) just fine. 100%
Did nothing but put the simcard in the phone and flashed a GSM ROM (Downtown).
I did flash the latest radio and firmware with S-OFF but everything was working before hand.
I activated the Prepaid Simcard on T-Mobiles website and used the Rezounds IMEI without problems just added the right APN for MMS and DATA.

Thanks Tachi,
I plan to order a T-Mobile SIM card to play with on monday. it will have 10 minutes of talk time, but no data. I still have quite some time left on my Verizon contract before I switch to T-Mobile. This might also be a good option for my daughter.
First, I will see how this works on my stock rooted 4.03.605.2 system with htcdev unlock and s-off. If I get the SIM locked warning, I will try installing a hboot loadable SIM unlock config.dat file I got from a website - it has my IMEI inside it.
I don't know why, but I can not enter the T-Mobile apn in my system, even if I switch the phone into gsm mode.
Then I will try the downtown ROM, if it is ok to load it ontop of 4.03.605.2
thanks,
Howard

How to get back to Verizon from Page Plus?

Hi XDAers,
Please help! I sold a my Rezound (which was flashed to Page Plus) to a pal using Verizon.
According to my old experience (3G phones), the phone should be able to be activated and programmed without any manual setting.
But the phone is not able to voice or text; the data works fine with the SIM card. It can't even dial out the activation number *228.
Does Verizon change the way to program the LTE phones? What I can to to resolve the problem?
Your help will be appreciated!!!
*228 doesn't do anything for LTE phones, so that's not the issue. I would guess you need to flash an RUU though I'm not certain. Better wait for someone who has more experience to clear that up for you.
RUU will restore it back to VZW specs. Pop in your 4G sim and you are good to go.
Thank you for the suggestions. Will try and report the result later. Thanks

[Q] HTC Droid Dna: Unlocked or Not?

Hello Community,
I recently purchased a used HTC Droid DNA on eBay. The user couldn't tell me very much about the phone beyond describing it's exterior condition to me. I didn't have to play with this phone for very long before I realized what a pleasurable device this would be to use, especially for someone upgrading from a Motorola Bionic. HOWEVER, it also wasn't very long into my usual customizations that I realized, that like my Bionic early on, doing anything fun on this phone is a son-of-a-*****.
I want to eventually root this phone, flash Cyanogenmod, and then flash it to Pageplus Cellular, but first things first. I really don't want to wait 5 days for a AT&T SIM card to get here from Minnesota or wherever, so does anyone know of a way I can tell if this device is already unlocked? Perhaps someone knows of an application or some other software than can tell me, or maybe there is something in the phone's settings? Anything at all would be nice.
Thank you,
Jack2402 =)
If you boot into the boot loader (turn off device and hold power and vol down) it should say s on or s off. That's the best way to tell, you are looking for s off. Moonshine will get you unlocked and s off though really easily
Hit thanks if I helped! Check out my site at www.circuitsaviors.com
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you telling me how to unlock saftey? Isn't that different from unlocking the SIM so I can flash it Pageplus? Or am I confused. Forgive me, I've rooted several phones and I've flashed one phone but I've never had to unlock one because I usually purchase them from sellers who already know there're unlocked.

It's sim unlocked. Your best bet is to wait for your sim to arrive put it in and just change the apn settings to match page plus to get mms. Once you do that you should be good to go.
As for flashing and rooting it's actually easy thanks to beaups and the moonshine process he created for getting s off.
Head over to the development section and it's stickeyed
Run moonshine and follow the easy steps and you will get an s off phone and unlocked bootloader. After that load a custom recovery and then back up with a nandroid backup and flash any rom or kernel of your choosing.
If you need any help with that feel free to PM me and I will be happy to help you.

Actually, for the last year or so, every LTE device that I've been aware of from VZW has come SIM unlocked, included DNA and Iphone 5. I think VZW isn't too afraid of people leaving, and if they do, they have a nasty ETF they can hit you with. And ding your credit if you don't pay it. And if you already have bad credit, then VZW already has a hefty deposit. So, yeah.

It's not quite that easy to get mms working. Verizon's stock ROM uses a whitelist for APN types and will not allow a MMS APN at all, you can enter the settings but they will be lost and MMS will NOT work, spent 2 hours on the phone with AT&T support working on this very issue.
If you're going to use the DNA on a GSM carrier for daily use, it's best to flash something like NOS M7 GSM version as this will allow the proper APN to be set up and mms will work. Once I switched to a ROM meant for GSM carriers, I have found MMS to be 100% reliable.

Yeah, I see. No, what I meant about the AT&T SIM card was that people use differing carrier SIMs to find out if their phone is unlocked. I didn't want to wait on eBay to send me an AT&T SIM to see if my Verizon is unlocked.

You will need to do some digging to find a guide (or pay for a service) to flash it to PagePlus. The ability to flash from Verizon to PagePlus is unrelated to the locked status of the SIM slot. I believe you will only get 3G on PagePlus, as well.
Yes, the SIM slot is unlocked for use on GSM carriers, but that won't matter if you're looking to flash to PagePlus.

[Q] Just picked up a Verizon S4, I have some questions

I picked this phone up for $50. The first thing I did before buying it was check the IMEI. Swappa said it was ready for activation and not blacklisted. I check most of the stickies and Q&As, but I just want to make sure I don't jump the gun and do something stupid. So I guess this is where my questions fall into place.
1. I want to activate this on Metro PCS, Is this even possible? I have an Exhibit on their network but it takes a full sized SIM. If so, what do I need and how?
2. I want to unlock the bootloader and the SIM slot. Some people have said the Verizon s4 is already SIM unlocked but I honestly couldn't find a straight answer, and since the SIM card I have for my Exhibit is full sized, I can't test it.
Actually, I guess those were my only questions. If you need any additional information from me about the phone just let me know. The last phone I messed with was an Xperia Play and by the looks of it, it's much easier to work with compared to the s4.

You can use it on metropcs by simply inserting the sim and putting in the APN settings, but beware that you "as is" the phone has lte/cdma option or gsm/umts or global. For lte on tmobile network, you have to select lte/cdma BUT you only get LTE, no 2G or 3G, so basically no calls, just data , as if it were a tablet. With the other 2 modes, (one may work better than the other) you can get HSPA+ and 2G, etc. voice calls work fine and data works (assuming apn settings are correct), but you will not get LTE.
there's possibly a way to unlock more bands and options, through the method in this link ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-add-rf-lte-frequency-bands-to-t2886059 ) but besides root you need a custom ROM. I have root, but I'm trying to figure out if I can do a custom ROM on 4.4.2. i know we cannot unlock the bootloader, but it seems some people do have custom ROMs, but not sure if I can get there (safestrap? flashing through odin?).
They use safestrap for anything above MDK and can only use compatible roms. MDK is the only version that can have a custom recivery and could flash ROMs like CM 12.

Thanks. could you link to the link for safestrap? when you talk about compatible roms, is that only stock ROMs with small modifications?

Most ROMs are yeah TW based and have mods.

I have 4G LTE on my s4 along with voice and text. Is there any need for me to try and enable more bands at this point?
(I cut down my sim to a micro so now it fits)

How do I tell if I'm on 'MDK'? The guy I got it from barely did anything with the phone.
Enabling more bands would help to get better reception, but if it's working goof enough for you. ..then maybe no need
GO into settings and see which baseband you are on if it says anything but MDK for the last 3 you cannot install a custom recovery.
Go to settings - About device and put the last three letters of the Baseband. If it is MDK, you are FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
If not, you are in a jail.

Hell I guess it wouldn't hurt to try. I'll look into later tonight along with root.

Looks like FNC5 if I'm doing this correctly.
Guess that means I'm in digital prison.
Yep. Atleast you can root and use safestrap.

Well for $50 I figured why not. Plus it's an upgrade from my old exhibit.
What's so special about MDK and why aren't we able to revert back to it?

Alright so I'll bring my phone to church, have reveren Samsung baptize it so it can become a born again virgin.
Fool proof.
It's just a firmware right? I figured someone would have cracked the code since this phone is a few years old now
Well, MDK is THE ONLY firmware that can use the Loki Doki exploit to unlock the bootloader. But thanks to Knox and Verizon, THERE IS NO WAY TO DOWNGRADE BACK. Since then, we have only been able to find root and no bootloader unlock.

Question Rooted Pixel 6 on Verizon

My Pixel 6 hasn't arrived yet but hopefully soon. I'm getting the unlocked version and I'm a Verizon customer. My plan is to root the phone and stay on the Google builds. I don't plan to install the Verizon build. I don't want anything from Verizon except the SIM card (which I already have and plan to transfer from my previous phone).
I've heard some reports of this not working though, of intermittent or no connectivity from Verizon. Some people on other forums report that they need to go to a store for a SIM swap, or switch to eSIM, but even that only works for a while and then it drops again.
Does anyone here have more info? Is this expected to work or does Verizon have a way to force you to use their builds?

I have the Google store version of the pro 6, on Verizon, and using Google build. I have on all of my Pixel phones.

First, they are not built by Verizon they are built by Google with different modem/network items for Verizon. That is the only difference, no extra apps or anything like that. As soon as you put a VZ SIM in it you will pull the My Verizon app no matter what firmware you are using. You can uninstall it. The updates all come from Google, not the carrier.
Go to the Google factory image download page and look at the Pixel 5 downloads. You will see in March of 2021 there was only one image for everything and it was that way for months. Then this fall they split apart. This is very common, Google splits them for awhile then merges them.
The VZ version will not lock your phone, add any bloatware or anything like that. But might give you a better signal.
What you want to do will work but isn't needed and probably not the best way to do it.

Thanks... one concern is that I'm coming from a Samsung and on this phone, Verizon forces OTAs. You can delay when the update happens but only briefly. This is a VZW phone, not unlocked, but I figured the VZW firmware is pushing the updates.
Updating requires re-rooting so I'd prefer to do it on my schedule, not Verizon's. Do you know if this is going to be an issue with the Pixel?

One further thing Verizon puts on. Under "all apps" - show system - scroll down for the "my verizon services" app. You can't delete it you can only stop and disable it. It does get reenabled on some schedule, perhaps on the monthly updates, so every once in a while you need to redo the disable thing. What it does it allows Verizon to get into your phone and see all the apps you have installed and when you installed them. Also how long your system has been running, whether or not you factory reset etc. Very intrusive, imo, so I always disable it first thing and check it regularly.

Once you are rooted updates will fail to install, so there won't be any surprises.

Hmm, are you sure about this? That would be fine, but in the root thread it says in big bold letters:
AUTOMATIC OTA WILL LOSE ROOT AND REQUIRE A WIPE TO ROOT AGAIN.
Hey folks, if anyone has access to system directory of Android 12, could you upload Google Sans fonts here?

These instructions worked perfectly to get esim working.
I'm using the Verizon firmware on the unlocked model. Wifi calling works and all.
I didn't get the QR code but the Reddit thread has a link for one on step 7. And my account was already CDMAless because of using a 1+ 7 Pro prior.
It took about 5-10 minutes after doing everything before I could make calls and send texts.
Idk if wifi calling works on unlocked firmware but it's enabled by a Verizon specific system app, com.verizon.mips.services
Edit. Idk why the link has a screenshot preview.
Mine didn't require any special provisioning. Running Google version of firmware. Unlocked bootloader, rooted, then inserted SIM from previous 2 XL.
Awesome, @TotallyAnxious and @Sunsparc, thank you both.

Well I'm not quite an identical situation but I'm using visible. And from what I've seen from Sears, we encounter the exact same problems as it's the same parent company. It worked instantly out of the box as soon as I pop my SIM card in on my unlocked Pixel (Global) 6 Pro. No issues at all.
However, as you're probably well aware, test builds with other games don't work. Oxygen OS 12 beta 1/2 for example, would not work with visible or Verizon Even when I put in the correct commonly unknown APN settings (There's actually four of them).
how did you root it?

i used boot.img extract from Pixel image file and patched it on my poco x3. I don't know why i can't do it on P6 but i got te pached file then copy it to P6. then followed up the link i provided above until i got to the flashing vbmeta, using a command from that link. After i got it then i fastboot boot magisk_patched then boot into my phone. After then go to Magisk Manager, at first i have no "Direct install" so i tried to flash it in fastboot mode again. then i hot it. once i turn on the phone, the direct install was thete then i used that method to permanently rooted. hope it helps.

I don't think you can unlock the bl on the Verizon hardware. But you CAN buy an unlocked phone and put the Verizon firmware on it.

Unlocked. I always buy unlocked.
I just recently paid of my Verizon Pixel 4 XL and called Verizon to see if they could unlock the bootloader. After about an hour and speaking with Tier 2 tech support, I was informed that the bootloader is locked forever and was recommended to buy directly from Google if you need to unlock the bootloader.

You could have come here and been told the same thing in under a minute and saved yourself the time and effort. It's common knowledge since Pixel 3. Hopefully your information will help someone else out.
