hardware issue, you must need a technician
Could the IC get wrecked? It should not cause the speaker works normal. I can hear all voices and music.

Maybe the headphone jack sensor got damaged. Does the headphone icon appear on the status bar when plugged? If not, then this is likely the issue.

The jack it's attached to the upper part of the board. You'll have to open the phone. And it is covered in plastic. If it's damaged then you'll probably have to replace it.
With EdwinMoqs and Artas' roms volume output can be high enough to cause clipping, which is often accompanied by false headset removal event. You have to carefully adjust the maximum safe volume level, but in the end it's still louder than stock rom which is crippled by EU and probably US regulations.
I can adjust volume via headset button, with the Headset Button Controller app. Setting max volume to 80-90% should do. The clipping protection in poweramp wasn't effective, it did the job with Artas' rom.
Problem can also be caused by a switch, which should be under one of the contacts in the jack, and can be reached with a needle(i never checked how it looks inside the jack). Also the plug should fit in to the hilt. Something might block the plug, the spindle with the contacts be too short. If you get the plug fully in and still see the spindle you're safe.
Socket looks like connecting, i can see pins moving. And i was shorting some last pins and it didn't said headphones is on.
There's a new feature in Android from 5.x or 6.x up, called Pressy Mode. It does exactly what the problem is here, and it can be controlled by Headset Button Controller app.
Probably intended for using the headset as antenna for a built-in tuner solely.
Ok, thank you all to trying to help me. I fixed this, it is working for now, i don't know for how long.
I connected for couple of seconds left channel and/or right channel by wire to the grounded Metal shield on board, and it started to detect headphones every time for now. The wire is not needed for constant working. I don't know how it worked. Also, motherboard was just a little moving over socket, so it was needed to make it hold still. I puted some little plastik on board so it pressed to the back. Works for now. I just dont know for how long. But there are still some little scrathes noises so it must be faulty IC or something in way from controller to the socket. The speaker has no scratch noises, works normal. but elements looks normal no green rust or anything.

I was on my nightly bicycle ride using Cardio Trainer and my Skull Candy Smokin Buds, and everytime id move the phone in my bicycle jersey near the headphone jack it would cause the music to skip/stop/ff sometimes try to voice search and sometimes try to redial out ... Yes. I posted the exact same thing in Q&A forum. Got no response but I figured it out.
Sometimes when you plug in your headphones they are detected as a headset. It doesn't occur that often, just make sure the notification icon doesn't have the microphone part. Otherwise any shaking causes songs to skip, phone to freak out and voice dialer starts.
Apparently there's also an app that makes sure they always do connect in headset mode. I think I'll go replace my phone anyway.

I had the same thing happen yesterday. I was testing some speakers at a job site and the phone was going CRAZY. I pulled the phone out of the otterbox case and re-plugged the headphone in and it was fine. I think my problem was the case + cable was not making the correct contact. Today I had the headphones from a PSP plugged in (with case) and it was fine.
Looks like its the same thing that was heading to my evo4g. The headphone input is design for 3 ring conductor (for remote control) but your headphone jack has 2 ring conductor thus making your phone act weird. I brought an adopter (you can go search amazon) and it fixed the problem.
go to marketplace and download "headset blocker". it wont show up in your apps list. go to 1 of your homescreens, and add its widget. its a toggle that you turn on and off. when its on, none of the headphone control features will work, and it it should just play your music without skipping tracks and what not.

Like previously mentioned this is because it is designed for a 3 ring conductor. 1 is left, 2 is right, 3 is microphone/control. The controls are back track, forward track, pause/play/answer/hangup. If you have a pair of headphones with 2 conductor (which is fine and it is also designed for) you are good. If, however, you aren't making full contact (because of cases being in the way or you have a 'non standard' headphones, read: cheap ****) wacky things can happy from intermittent contact of the various points.
I've never experienced this on either phone, but, it is a thing and it makes perfect sense.
There is another possibility...that the jack is fncked up. Poorly soldered, defective jack, abused (all it takes it one good jerk on the cable to ruin everything).
It's not as random and wacky of a situation as it sounds like.

The issue is not with headphone/earbuds and not with the cable not plugging in all the way. The issue for me is that when you have the headphone cable plugged into the jack and the other end is feeding any type of amp: stereo equipment, Aux input in a car, whatever, the phone absolutely loses its mind. I've tested it on three different phones now and it does it every time. The phone is unusable until you download, install, and activate Headset Blocker from the market. Then everything works perfectly. It appears to be a defect in either the hardware or the software because it is picking up electrical noise as headset control signals.
BTW, I've measured the cables and tested to be sure they plug in all the way. They are standard 2 ring (which means three conductor) cables that should not be triggering any headset functionality. It sounds likely that it could be a grounding issue, probably on the amp side...though it could be on the phone side, especially if this happens to some phones and not others. If this is pro gear there is probably a ground lift switch on the back...give that a shot, if it doesn't help then it is definitely the phone...which I am leaning towards since it seems to happen on some and not others.

I know this thread is 2 years old, but I figured bumping is better than starting a new thread. Anways, this issue has been driving me crazy to no end. Headset blocker stops the false signals. However, if it's in your pocket and the base of the jack is bent, (at least on Skullcandy products + HTC Inspire), music stops playing from the left ear.
Anyways, I figured out a solution to this. Cut a 3.4mm hole in a credit card, and then insert your headphone jack. Trim the card around where you insert the headphone jack. To get the right size hole, I use a knife to penetrate the card, and then use a screwdriver to widen the hole until it's about right. It should stop all interference and false signals, audio cutting when your phone is in your pocket and the headphone base is bent.
This also works on heaphones that have microphones; however, you have to remove the plastic piece if you want to use the mic.
Abaout those adapters on Amazon that someone mentioned; what do I search to find them?

I've had the same issues plugging it into my car and into professional audio equipment.
Headset blocker is great. I just keep it on all the time.
It was pretty funny sitting in the car and realizing that it's dialing everyone on your contact list though. Couldn't make it stop even after unplugging it. It went crazy.

i have the exact same thing on my device, but it happens with any headphones i have plugged in
moving them just a bit causes google now to launch repeatedly and the music to skip,play,pause,etc
to fix it i remember using a blocker from the market and editing the code that launches google now via headphones so the blocker would block it aswell
I plugged my headphones in for the first time today and i realized that the left side was quieter than the right. And I unplugged it and replugged it in and it was fine. Then I tried it again and the left side was lower again. I'm not sure what's causing this or if my tablet is defective. But it seems like a hit or miss on getting even volume from both sides.
Anyone else having this problem or can test it out?

Actually, I found that SGS2 headphones only work well on the SGS2. With my laptop they have tons of noise, on nook sometimes I have uneven volume.
Although on SGS2 they have the best sound I've ever heard in headphones..

Yes I too have that problem. Glad to see that it's not just me & mine.
Stupid question - for those having issues, have you tried wiggling or rotating the plug once it is plugged in? Sometimes I find if I have a spot of oxidization on the plug it will cause said uneven volume. It could explain the difference that occurs when you unplug/plug back in.
Another thing to try would be to plug them in when the device is asleep to see if that helps. If there is anything that tries to reduce the "pop" of the sound of plugging in the headphones it *might* affect how they sound after the fact.
Just grasping at straws here based on my experience with other devices.

no amount of fiddling with the plug helped me at all still have the issue and its annoying since the speaker isnt loud enough when I am out and about.
Another thing to consider - another issue I've had with certain device/headphone combos is that some headphone jacks either don't have a long enough plug or the plastic jacket of the jack interferes just enough with the plug in the device to affect sound (essentially related to downsay's comment). Try a cheap pair of 'phones from the dollar store with a simple jack and see if the problem persists. If so, perhaps the device is defective...

Edit: Plugging the headphones in while the device was asleep seems to have fixed the issue for me for now. Sound is equal in both cans now
I have tried 4 different earphones, they have been plugged in all the way. Some people have no problem, so I'm beginning to think this is a hardware defect. I'm going to exchange mine and will let you guys know if there is a difference. I'll also try out the display model and see if it suffers from this problem.

I replaced my Nook twice partially due to this issue. Same problem on all three and it's always the left channel that is not connecting properly. I have found that I can get a good connection by plugging the jack in slowly. I think this is more a software issue than a hardware issue.
Yea just exchanged my tablet as well and the same issue is there as well as the one at the store. Plugging in slowly does help. Just before it engages the last click, if you hear both channels you're golden. Hopefully this is a software issue because it seems to be random. Unfortunately the one I exchanged has a creaking case, so now back to exchange again.
I stopped by Radio Shack this afternoon and purchased a $5 female to male 1/4" stereo connector. It seems to have solved the problem. I had similar problem years back with an iPaq PocketPC. Due to the shape of the hole on the iPaq/Nook, the headphone/earphone connector isn't inserting deeply enough.
Another solution would be to use something like a Dremel Mototool and shave away some of the excess material on the headphone/earphone adapter, so it can insert a little bit deeper.

What is everyone testing their audio on? The stock media player? Video (what program)? Is it on every application you try?
I haven't had any issues with audio in games, websites or MX player at all other than a loudish pop when some programs start up, but I'm using a set of Denon stereo headphones (so, good (large/long, gold) headphone plugs on it, jiggling the connection does nothing).
So I installed Neutrino on my Atrix yesterday (I'm not sure if that's relevant or not, but I figure it's good to know), and everything was working perfectly fine. However, earlier today the audio from my headphone jack started to sound completely distorted.
It's not the earbuds, because they work on other devices I have. And the audio from my speakers and from HDMI works perfectly fine.
Has anyone had this problem, and if so, is there any way I can fix it? Or is my phone screwed?

I didn't. At least, not at first.
DSP Manager actually started to crash on startup about the same time that the audio from my headphones would be a problem. I thought reinstalling it would fix the problem, but it hasn't. Though, the louder I make it, the more "clearly" I can hear what I'm playing (it still sounds like satan farts, though).
I also tried cleaning the headphone jack, but that only helped a slight bit.
Would it be worth reinstalling Neutrino or is my phone died?
I'd say it's worth a shot. Make a nandroid, do a full wipe, and then flash your ROM. If that doesn't help, then at least you can be fairly sure it's not the software.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like what you're hearing is the difference between the 2 channels, rather than the channels themselves. This would happen if the common ground connection is broken somewhere in the audio out. It's an easy theory to test really. All you need is an audio file that plays on either the left or right channel only. If you have sound out of both channels, then there's your problem, if not, then it's something else.
Actually, this sounds like a poor connection that is overcompensated by extreme loudness so that some of the electric current is strong enough to pass through. I've heard what the "no common ground" sounds like many times, I don't think this is it.
The headphone connector is not actually soldered to the PCB but instead sits on it on springy contacts (makes for very easy repairs and replacements at service centers). I'm almost willing to bet there lies your problem.

Maybe. But if that is the case, wiggling the plug may give some indication of that without disassembling the device, just as would playing a single channel file. In both cases, the jack would likely be the culprit, but given how fragile the device is internally, taking it apart should be done with extreme caution.

I tried playing a mono sound file, and sound files that play through only the left speaker and only the right speaker. They all sound like they have the same problem, so we can rule that out.
Though, I will mention that the sound that is heard is on maximum volume, and that's the only time I can hear anything at all. If I go down just two notches, then I start to hear nothing.

Just a thought, but have you tried another pair of headphones?
Edit: if the headphones are good, then the only other thing I can think of is a bad section in the audio chip. The schematic shows the headphone output is separate from any of the other sound outputs, so it is possible that the chip is bad. Unfortunately, if that is the case, the cheapest solution would be to replace the main board, but it's a delicate procedure.

Yeah, I'm sure it's not the headphones. I've got two; a set of headphones and a set of ear buds. Both of them are functional in other devices but do not work in the phone. Also, the audio clip was direct feed with a different chord, so the problem is surely with the phone.
I'm at the point where I'm willing to open up the phone to see if there is a problem with the jack itself. If it is corrosion or another problem with the jack then I can try some repairs. If I do have to replace the main board then I'll probably wait on that and ultimately purchase a new phone.
One thing to note is that the audio quality does not improve if I move the jacks around inside of it. However, I do hear a sort of rubbing sound from the headphones if I am moving it around.

If the jack is the issue then it shouldn't be too bad to replace. I was looking at different websites earlier and they look to be really cheap. The thing I have to stress though is just be careful, and don't take apart the phone unless you can replace the phone itself just in case something should go horribly wrong. I know that should be pretty obvious, and generally people tend to underestimate their own skill level, but I have encountered a few people in my time who have what I consider to be the opposite of the Midas touch, and their attempts at repairing anything end up as more of a hate crime against the very thing they are trying to fix.

I use my headphone jack everyday.
Today the headphone stopped working. Initially I thought it was the headphone so i tried 2 other pairs. Nothing. Cannot hear anything. I play music from the speaker and that works fine. But as soon as i plug in I dont hear anything.
Searching through the other threads, I found lint mentioned. So i blew in the jack and also tried to a pin. It appears to be clean.
Using an app I selected for a wired headset to be the only output. Now, when music is playing and when I putting in/pulling out the headphones in I can hear a crackling noise but nothing else. When turned up fully there is also some static!
Ive reset my phone so I know its probably not a software issue.
Any ideas please?
1. Try to hold the audio jack to one side (that is, press it either left or right) to make it slant on a side. Check if you get any sound.
2. Try seeing if you hear music by inserting the audio jack at various "depth" into the phone. i.e. don't insert it fully.

tried both..but nothing!
you tried the other solutions from the forum? corrosion problem, etc? That's the best I can help. Otherwise, you might need to change the audio board, it's available on ebay I think for < $10, and apparently not so difficult to replace as well.
Let's check it with a torch. I also had this issue and it was not so easy but I managed to remove a little lint with a needle. After that it worked fine for me.

This has now been resolved. It turned out there was another bit of lint I had missed. So using a needle, I took it out and the headphone is now back to its best.

Hello, for a while now my phone is stuck on headphones mode and Im completly lost as I've sort of tried everything I can. the headphones logo is always on the status bar, when connecting headphones with mic, the logo changes to headphones with mic, but when pulling off the logo changes back to regular headphones. When connecting and disconnecting headphones really fast, sometimes the headphones logo disappears for a second, but them coming back again in an instant. I tried cleaning the aux port, tried opening the phone and check if all the parts are connected well, tried to completly wipe my phone and install another custom rom, nothing works. I assume that the problem is hardware and not software, but when connecting and disconnecting headphones, there's a little change, I wonder if maybe there's anything I can do.

If you look closely in the headphone jack, you'll find a tiny gold contact pin, which is just lined with the inner circle. Check it if it's like moved in

See that shining gold pin? I'm talking about them. There must be about 2 or 3 like them. Sometimes the pins are pushed inside, which gives permanent signals of headphone connected. Getting them straight can be tough, since you have to take a really thin thing like a needle or so and then with it bend them a tad outwards.

I am not quite sure, maybe you should contact a technician. This is hardware malfunction, and nothing related to software. I had the same problem with another phone and thats what i did, but since it's tough to look in the jack of this phone, so it would be better to see a technician.
I had the same issue long back but it used to go away when i repeatedly insert and remove earphones fast for 15-20 times.. Thats the only thing worked for me
ya, i am also facing same problem that's why i change my headphone. and now its work properly, i think it's a headphone jack problem. but not all headphones work only few headphones work properly

I tried cleaning the aux port, tried opening the phone and check if all the parts are connected well, tried to completly wipe my phone and install another custom rom, nothing works. I assume that the problem is hardware and not software, but when connecting and disconnecting headphones, there's a little change, I wonder if maybe there's anything I can do.

I had faced the same problem, at last, I found the solution...
it isn't a software problem...
follow the instructions...
- try to clean up the jack holder with a pin or any pointed thing (mind it be care full while cleaning, be gentle)..
may this trick helps you...
just replace the headphone jack. you can get them cheap from aliexpress.com at $2 - $3, then get it changed from a mobile repair shop.
Had the same problem - cleaned the jack with a toothpick - issue resolved in no time.
