How to HARD UNBRICK FIRE HDX 7, 4.5.5.1. HELP! - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I just got my Kindle Fire HDX 7 about a month ago, and it had Fire OS 4.5.5.1. I wanted to unlock the bootloader, so I was stupid enough to try to downgrade the device. So I tried it, and there, it became a paperweight! I know I can open it up and replace the motherboard, but I don't want to open up my Fire HDX. So I went over the forums and found out I can use a factory(fastboot) cable. Is there anyway to unbrick the Fire HDX 7 that is on Fire OS 4.5.5.1?

- factory (fastboot) cables are ineffective on this device except in one special case which does not apply to your device
- board/battery replacement is exceptionally difficult on 7" models due to copious use of glue; a cracked screen is the likely outcome
- hard brick is permanent; sorry for your loss

I don't understand, if I use a Factory cable, won't it force my HDX 7 into fastboot? And from there I can flash the stock rom?

Nope - Amazon crippled recovery capabilities by: 1) disabling the 'interface' that recognizes factory/fastboot cables; and 2) disabling various fastboot commands with a locked bootloader. Long story short there is no way to flash stock recovery on a locked device that will not boot. Amazon devices in general and HDX models in particular easy to brick and nearly impossible to recover.

Also note the condition/preparation of the replacement components plays a large role on whether the device is ultimately recoverable.

You'll need to do some homework to determine what is required. Not a lot of information out there. In the end it may be more cost effective to acquire another device.

@Davey126, I contacted Amazon, and they said I still have a warranty for this device. Can I send this tablet to them for replacement?

Yes! This is an excellent resolution to your issue. You will receive a refurbished (not new) replacement that is a one time courtesy exchange. I assumed your warranty has expired as 3rd gen HDX models went out of production last summer.
When the new one arrives be sure to post your intentions. It will likely arrive with FireOS v4 which requires special handling to root and install software (safestrap v4.x) that supports a limited suite of Kitkat based custom roms if that is your desire. Someone will validate your game plan to help avoid another brick.

Because I also had safestrap recovery and a custom rom on the Fire HDX 7 before it got Hard Bricked. Can Amazon find that out?

Doesn't matter - Amazon offers a onetime 'no questions asked' exchange during the warranty period. That said, I would not advertise the fact it was anything other than stock. Just say it refused to turn on following an update.

Well, all risk taken into consideration, it can be done. I'm talking from experience, I bought the motherboard from eBay from a seller from the US and had it shipped in Italy. With a friend, looking at the guide from iFixit was able to successfully replace the Motherboard. Still today the tablet is working fine.
The old motherboard, who is perfectly functional as of hardware, but the software-wise was bricked, was given as a gift to a user here in Xda for further development....

Thank God that Amazon sent me a replacement tablet! By the way, I sent them a 16 gb tablet and they gave me 32 gb! I think because they ran out of 16 gb replacements. Yes, it still has a locked bootloader, but it's fine for now. ??

no support for bootloader unlocker

Asus support just told me that they do not provide support for the unlocker. I've been trying to unlock this thing for weeks now, finally decided I'd call Asus about my "an unknown error occurred, possibly a network connection issue" error message and the guy on the phone just told me they can't help me because that utility will void my warranty. I pointed out that warranty is not yet void and in my opinion they still have an obligation to help, but they were impervious to my logic.

I can understand ASUS in that way. This example came into my mind:
you want to break into a house and couldn't manage that due to the lock pick.
So you ask a policeman: "Please show me how to use this lock pick".
He would say: "No, that's criminal". And you say:"It's not criminal". I didn't break in by now".
It's not exactly the same some somehow similar
They release their own tool, but do not support it.
This doesnt make any sense to me, since device is still locked. Another one to add to the list.

This analogy might make sense if it was my house, and the police man not only sold me the house without telling me there were no keys, but handed me the lockpicking tools when I complained.
Use someone elses connection, sounds like its a firewall/port issue .. either that or open up all your ports for the TFP in your router (DMZ)

I'm not sure what the relevance of your quote is. It mentions before I use it, which I can't because it doesn't work, and then cautions that I can't relock my boot loader, which is irrelevant because I can't, because it doesn't work.

I think that's the only way this analogy makes even a bit of sense. I have the same problem and I'm also trying to contact ASUS support.
We need SBK (since, afaik, we already have access to an updated version of nvflash which works with t3) as one way to solve these cases. Probably. Since Asus doesn't seem to be doing anything else to solve it either.

Generation differences?

Hi there.
I had a fire hdx 32gb for Xmas and it had a faulty line in the display. After upgrades it was running 4.5.2.
I sent it back and Amazon sent a new replacement which also had a fault with the display and was running 4.5.2
They have sent me a 3rd fire hdx which was a refurbished one. I phoned them and they told me it is just a returned one and has not been repaired or anything. They currently have none in stock so I said as long as this one is fine and was just a return I would keep it. This one works fine but the software upgrades are 13.3.2.5 which I believe is the last gen fire?
What are the difference between these generations and would I be better off getting a new gen one from Amazon as that is what I originally paid for?

It depends on what do u want the device for.
13.3.2.5 is rootable what means that you would be able to do the process to get bootloader unlocked and install custom roms.
Buying a brand new one would likely bring an updated firmware so you would be forced to use just amazon fire os.

I thought there were two different versions if the hdx. One which had 13.x.x as latestcsoftware and the other with 4.5.2!!
Not rooting the fire, I root all my other devices but decided to keep the fire stick for a change!

no you shouldn't have gotten a different generation you simply got one that is on earlier firmware and saves you a lot of grief if you are going to try to root get the bypass done on the bootloader...whatever you do do not hook up to wifi and register it or it will update to the latest firmware and you will be screwed

Dear all, my Kindle Fire HDX seems frozen after the FireOS update to ver. 5 (I think). There was a notification saying the OS is updated and when I was using Silk to browse the web, it suddenly restarted and it just keep looping the "kindlefire" colour animation indefinitely.
I've contacted with Amazon CS and they suggested me to factory reset it. I tried, but the device still loop in the colour animation screen.
I'm not familiar with ADB but anyway downloaded and tried some command:
adb devices (no device listed)
adb wait-for-device (no response)
adb usb (error: no devices found)
adb shell (error: no devices found)​
Did I miss some steps and is it possible to resuscitate my Fire HDX? Thank you very much!

- what version of FireOS was on your device before it updated?
- rooted? Google Services (Play Store) installed?
- do you know if USB debugging was enabled (in FireOS settings)?
It was most likely updating to 4.5.5.1. as 3rd gen isn't getting Fire OS 5.

Actually my wife told me that she saw a notification about an update was installed and I'm not very sure about the version.
I didn't root the device and didn't installed the Play Store.

Going to assume 4.5.5 -> 4.5.5.1. Unfortunately, not much can be done if you can not establish adb access. Try these drivers. Even then recovery is a long shot. Involves installing a different launcher (likely Nova) via adb which FireOS will hate but may get you through the balance of the boot-up sequence. Have to see what works from there.
Death by unsolicited OTA is a common occurrence even on pure stock and especially 8.9" models. If purchased within the last year (exactly 365 days) seek a warranty exchange from Amazon.

I have tried the drivers but my computer seems doesn't detect any new hardware so I can't install the driver for the device. I wonder whether a "factory cable" can help or not?
Btw, just curious, is there any clue on what process/step/whatever is blocking the system from loading properly? :cyclops:

Unfortunately, 'factory' (sometimes called fastboot) cables do not work with HDX devices. Appears to be disabled in hardware.
Uncertain what failed. Sometimes it's the native launcher which is the mitigation I was suggesting w/Nova. Longshot at best but I know of no other with your config.

I would be wary getting another large HDX. Expensive with so-so reliability. Uncertain how long Amazon will sell/support 4th gen models. They don't get any love in promotional materials (absent from most comparisons). Limited customization options, no root, custom roms or external storage. Pros are obvious: fantastic panel, form factor, audio, battery life. You. Won't find many other tabs will similar specs. Tough decision - especially after owning one of these beauties. If you do go for it be sure to get an extended warranty. SquareTrade has always treated me well with multiple iPhone replacements (via the Apple Store; not some cheap refurb) at low/no cost. Haven't had to make a claim on any other device so can't speak to that. Good luck.

I'd look into other devices within a similar price range. The 3rd generation HDX tablets have been discontinued (4th generation soon to follow, I can only guess), the development scene is arguably lacking, and it won't get much better. Though the HDX line certainly offers great hardware, we have to face the fact that it's nearing the end of its life cycle. There are many options like the Nexus 9, which are much more user-friendly in terms of modding, and will have support from both the manufacturer as well as the community for a good few years.

Hi there, a friend of mine gave me his HDX 8.9 because he told me that "it wouldn't work" and I was wondering if I can possibly fix it. All I can describe is that the device seems to be in a bootloop or something, and only powers on when it's plugged into something. I noticed that sometimes it says [fastboot] right next to the Amazon logo, but that's all i can really describe. Unfortunately, I can't show a picture since I'm still under 10 posts lol.
So you think there's anyway I can fix this? I don't really know where to start.

With seriously advanced skills, considerable patience and a dollop of luck one can sometimes coax a looping/unresponsive 3rd gen HDX back to life from the fastboot prompt. The tasks involved are not for the faint of heart with little to no support from the dwindling HDX community. If you wish to press on the best resource may be XDA member @draxie who has the most extensive experience with advanced HDX recovery techniques. Good luck.

- remove tether/charge cable
- turn off device (long press power until screen goes dark)
- press <power>+<vol-up>
- when logo appears release power button followed by vol-up
- if device enters a recovery environment with two options (stock recovery) try a 'factory reset' (probably won't work)
- if device fires up TWRP post back for further guidance

And, if your device does none of the above,
but enters fastboot mode, then you should
first check if the bootloader is locked.
If it isn´t, you can flash TWRP via fastboot
and return to @Davey126 for guidance.
If it is, you´ll need to follow these instructions,
keeping this in mind.
In either case, you should be fine...
as long as you know (or learn) how to use fastboot.
I'm not home at the moment to check if there is a recovery mode, but I did forget to mention that the tablet is a 4th gen one and that my computer did show a drive letter, so it at least recognizes the tablet. I hear 4th gen tablets are harder to work with, does this mean it's not possible to recover?

The more advanced instructions linked from my post
have only been verified to work on 3rd generation
devices, and could easily lead to a brick. I strongly
advise *against* testing those on a 4th generation
device, except possibly as the very last resource.
On the other hand, if you have a drive letter at times,
and a fastboot prompt at other times, you may have
a much easier path.
In any case, I neither own nor have any experience
with a 4th generation device; so, I'm afraid I cannot
help in this venture.
Ah, well that's a shame, since I really liked how this device looks. I'll probably just let it sit there for a while until more people have experience with a 4th gen HDX. I'll probably get a tablet for myself, do most people think that the HDX 7 is a better device than the newer Fire HD 8?

Any 3rd gen HDX is a better choice than Amazon's 5th and 6th gen offerings which include the Fire 7 and HD 8, respectfully. The former is solidly entry level with limited storage and a truely lousy screen. The latter is a modest step up but, like the 4th gen HDX, has no custom ROM support. In contrast, the HDX line was positioned as a mid to high end device with gorgeous panels, more RAM (for multitasking) and strong processors that remain competitive today. A downside with pre-5th gen devices is the lack of external (SD card) and/or OTG (USB) storage options. Everything must reside onboard which can be a severe limitation on 16GB devices.
4th gen HDX devices were never popular and are unlikely to garnish further attention from the development community.

Ah alright, I was lucky enough to find a 32GB HDX 7 for $65, so I'm happy about that. I was seriously considering the Fire HD 8 just because it's newer and has a bigger screen, but it has no custom ROM support yet so I decided not to pick that up instead.
Thanks for all the help guys, hopefully one day I can put the 4th gen HDX to use.

HDX 8.9 motherboard compatibility

my hdx 8.9(2014) is broken. I connected it to my computer. And showing ****ing Qhdloader. I think its board broken. So I plan to replace it. I search about that. There is two types of HDX 8.9. One is 2013, another is 2014. Do both have a compatibility?

Probably not compatible. 2013 is likely 3rd gen; 2014 4th gen.
If you do replace the mainboard how do you plan to initialize it? Amazon locked out most fastboot commands. I've also heard the daughter board must also be replaced when messing with the mainboard.
