Why is there barely any custom ROMs? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

This is the first device that I've owned the has taken so long with not much sign or interest on the custom development side of things, not even much chatter about it.
Why is there such a lack of interest in the G5? Is it more complicated than other devices or have LG not released the source or something (I'm no developer at all, just a severe flashaholic and am having severe withdrawals since buying this device. Not a single ROM flashed in months lol).
Thanks guys

Beacuse LG locked all the bootloaders except h850 which is only for some parts of Europe ..Hope that lg will change their minds about this

The H850 is not the only one with unlocked bootloader. H830 also has unlocked bootloader. Also, i wouldnt go making a lot of demands since moderators are watching. And "Beggers " get the worst out of them (with reason) (just suggesting). Also, since Im not a developer (yet), I decided to hold back and not buy the phone until there is at least 2 builds released. (if another phone dont catch my eye first, which it has already happened, S**t lol) but yeah, also patience is something you will have to endure. There is currently a handful of devs working on CM during their free time. As for now, people will have to use the "Fluence HD" patch if they want to flash something to mod their phones. In addition to that, there are some other developers that claims they have started to built their own roms and are currently testing them in their phones. But there are some files they still missing to compile. ( i have to find the post for each one again)
In conclusion.... yeah, you will definitely have to wait, and begging/requesting/or anything you do with the purpose to make it go faster won't help at all. After all, Developers also have a life, and they are doing this with their free time.

I'm not requesting anything St all, I was just curious as to what the issue was but now I know ☺ thanks for the detailed explanation.
I wasn't sure weather it was even worth while unlocking and putting custom ROMs on etc until it was all in motion but I might just dive in and try the Fluence HD.
Thanks again guys

Very well. This are the links i have been looking for:

I think i saw a couple of others in another threads but you get the ideas. Its not that there is not interest on building roms for the G5, but that there are missing things to copile. But it is better that they take their time building a rom than to release a heavily buggy/unstable rom that might hard brick your device for good. At least that's what i think. (even though i dont currently own the G5 lol)

yea i suppose that makes sense. nothing worse than getting stuck in a boot loop and your computer not even detecting the device lol.
I love the G5 and dont see where all the hate came from in the Q&A section, cant wait to get flashing this bad boy lol

Well, part of the issue has been the signifcant amount of deffective G5's that have been sold and return again. And misleading infos provided by LG itself. For the time being i will keep an eye on the G5, the moto z force when it comes out, and... If samsung galaxy s7 reduces the price and developers achieve cm, then i might keep an eye on that one too. There is nothing worst that college sucking up all your money leaving you with only one shot at buying a new smartphone. If it comes deffective , you are practically done lol

Im not aware of defective G5's. I mean, not more than any other new phone on the market. Remind you the S7 Edge also has this screen issue with thr purple vertical lines..it just gets less publicity because reviewers like Samsung. I also disagree with LG "misleading" info.. It is a metal phone with paint, still metal. I mean, the S7E's metal body is covered with sensitive glass and no one cares.

Yeah but they upon release they never specified that it had that coating on top of the metal. And that is not giving entire specifications about the phone. And with deffects (in this occasion) im referring to external defects. While screen might qualify as external, there are things even more external than the screen itself. Many have reported a huge gap between the modular part and the phone. Among other issues. But if you want to talk about internal issues, there is a vast amount of people who have reported their phones dying on them, or excessive overheating, or screen bleeding., and thats not only on XDA. XDA is just a small percent of the population on internet. The rest of the population matter. Yes, samsung have deffects but LG flagships have a history of deffects that goes way back up to even the G2. Dont get me wrong, im considering on buying the LG G5, but thats not my only option. I have also in mind the Moto Z force, and the galaxy s7. And hell, why not htc 10 too lol. But base on how LG is handling things (such as they havent released some of the modules for USA, and some modules having problems to work with the device and similar thing, it just made me think that i believe that LG released the G5 kind of earlier than they should have. I have a G3, a galaxy s4, and a galaxy s5, and had a G4, and i had to exchange the G4 3 times to fine a good one, and then even that one died on me. The G3 has proven to be a stable one, with some people reporting that the screen sometimes develop problems in the touch areas. But mine has remined faithful. Now the s4 and s5 i still have no issues with them, except the g5 with a little burn in image, but that was on me because i should have put the status bar hidden. Anyway, you get my point. The history speak by itself. It is just like the history of the oneplus devices. Which are now trying to make it better

Well, let's agree to disagree about the paint.
There was never a huge gap on the G5. Some have small tiny gap which barely counts as a defect. I have a tiny gap on my phone and it's nonsense.
"huge" gap:
https://9to5google.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/unspecified.jpg
I agree about the LCD bleed, but you will only see it when turning the brightness to max and looking at a black screen in a dark room...which, for me, is..never. LCD's have that quite often.
Haven't seen dying G5's and I'm not aware of excessive overheating that wasn't caused by some app running in the background.
Not sure what was wrong with the G2, the best phone I ever owned. I had two and both still rocking perfect. Only got the G5 for the best camera.
I had issues with the G3 (I think of the G3 as the worst in the G2-G5..resolution was too high for the SOC, too much sharpening on the screen, resolution hit the battery life) but most were solves with software updates.
The G4 has that board problem, yep. I have a G4 at home and it's an amazing phone ..I guess I got one from a good batch. In any case LG replaces faulty G4's (at least in my country) for free.
I think you meant G4 and G5 at the end there.
So.. no.. I get what you're saying but I don't think it's true \ just.
Which G5 screen burn.. can you post a photo please so I can prevent it on mine?
Which Onelpus history though? My brother and mother both have Oneplus (1st one) and they are just great phones. I heard some issues with the Oneplus 2 ..I guess due to the OxygenOS change.
I do remember some issues with the touch sensitivity on the first Oneplus but they fixed it with software updates.
But really, you can go over to any phone's forum on XDA and you will find issues. Electronics have issues. People with no issues don't sign up and write threads about how everything is OK. You only read thread by users with problems. It's not LG exclusive.
If I were you, I would get the S7 Edge. Build aesthetics seems important to you and although the HTC 10 has awesome build, I can't find a reason to get it over the S7.

There cannot be a battle between opinions because in the end everybody will choose their own sides. All that i have said is based on experiences, and base of what i have read too, not only in XDA but digging around google which means thousands and thousands of different post on different websites, in addition to video in youtube, and more. So, let me skip the whole stuff to the last part of your last post, Aesthetics is not more important than functionality to me, which is why i'm strongly siding to Moto Z Force more than S7, HTC 10, LG G5 or even the Oneplus 3 (which have proven to be a good phone with some minor exceptions). After all, I always put a cover on my phone anyways, so, the so called "premium quality feeling" that people often are looking for, to me is useless since i use a cover. I use a phone to call, to use its functionality, not to rub its body against my skin to see how nice it feels every 5 seconds/minutes/hours in a given day. But i also like phones which try to be as limitless as possible. Which significantly reduces my list... Anyway, if we were going to argue about the matter it would take about 5 pages of XDA and we would probably still disagree with each other soo, lol I will just say that my experiences are not your experiences, and yours are not mines, therefore nothing that we say can be the "100% true" about each device we have ever touched before.

It will probably be a while yet before we get any usable CM roms, customised stock is great so far. We should get some soon though as I believe some devs like Xpirt are getting the device

Making a rom is not as easy as you might think . But otherwise, the phone is really good and the Stock Rom is perfect. Would like to root without unlocking the bootloader but you can not have everything

Well, i as Dev and ROM Cooker have to say that I'm really sad about the fact that there's almost no Development on the G5.
We have almost all needed source to compile a booting CM13 Build, but no one is creating a Thread for Public Testing. In my Eyes that would help alot...
Custom ROMs based on Stock are another Story. It looks like that no one is able to get a working Updater Script/Meta-inf.
Shouldn't be that hard for a skilled LG Device Dev to make one. But where are all the G2/3/4 Owners? Are they still on a old G Device? No interests on a G5? I dont know! But it's a really sad Story ...
I've found so much nice stuff in the H850 Firmware but some things need to be fixed and I've no clue how. So I can just hope that there comes soon some Development on this Device, which means more Developers and more success with creating ROMs and Modifications.
Fingers crossed! I love this Device and I don't want to sell i just of Lack of Development...

Same here. But right now I like the device with your Fluence HD and the Aosp mod. It runs very well!
Of course I am eagerly waiting for Alucard's kernel (loved his SGS4 kernels!) and AOSP or cm.
But patience is a virtue and I can wait.
Also, as the price of the g5 is dropping I hope that more developers get on board.

I would gladly contribute. Unfortunately, I'm on vzw.

Youtube is barely another small percentage of internet's population. Doing that would mean only to stick in one side out of millions. And arguing as in "argument " is exactly whwt we do on XDA. It doesnt necessary has to be bad argument. However, an argument is only worth it if you can feel that you have a chance to persuade or proof your point. But neither of us can do. To start looking for all thr comments, post, videos, blogs, etc..... It would be a suicide to do that. That, and that brains can only retain so much before it throws the information to a deeper part of the brain.

Galaxy S2 A Victim Of Its Own Popularity?

Is it just me or is the Galaxy S2 a victim of its own popularity in the fact that it has so many moaners? I'm completely satisfied with my White GS2, autobrightness is a bit poor but that's not a big deal to me. I've owned a few Android phones,
HTC Tattoo.
HTC Desire.
ZTE Blade.
Motorola Defy.
HTC HD2 (with Android obviously)
Sony X10i.
This phone has been my best experience with an Android phone so far. I used to be a fan of Sense but i feel Touchwiz is BETTER! I think the main problem is the happy users (The majority!) don't feel the need to speak up about it whereas many unhappy users want to make their voice heard. There are people actually saying they HATE this phone on these forums...if that is the case why are they hanging around? Sell the phone and leave the forums
I guess when a device sells as well as the GS2 you do end up with a lot of users who bought the phone simply because it's the most popular currently and they haven't done their research prior to buying or upgrading.
That, and the age-old problem that people very very rarely make the effort just to say "My [insert item here] is awesome, that is all." They more often use the effort to moan.
I bloody love my SGS2, best phone I've ever had. Makes everything else look like a poor cousin, even to the point that I don't feel the need to root at the moment - I had to root my Desire not long after I had it to love it this much!
I had the (mis?)fortune to get a play around with an IPhone 4S the other day, and the SGS2 feels so far ahead it's not even funny anymore.
I had to root my Desire for one simple reason. More space for apps. A2SD!
Is it just me or is the Galaxy S2 a victim of its own popularity in the fact that it has so many moaners?

totally.
And far too many inexperienced user who dont know how to utilise the phone properly, refuse to read and educate themselves or look for the slightest error and go nuts with it
I think its also wanting to feel part of something (ie this forum/community)....so by posting threads it validates their time on this forum...pretty sad really
I think phones like this should come with a rating of some kind like movies do....
agreed with all the above, the phone is by far and away the best I've owned, had a x10i before which was good, arc and arc s didn't inspire me, Galaxy s2 blown me away to the point I don't really want to root/flash unless there is any real advantage to do it.....as asked in another post, looks like it's worth a flash to the latest stock rom which is what I'll do, at least I know I'll get the updates from sammy direct when released without having to wait for 02
Darkside i love that rating comment but what i love even more is your signature. That comment is pure gold.
kp it is definitely worth flashing an up to date stock rom without a doubt. Carrier updates are a joke for all devices.

Sorry for the OT....
The way I see it there are 3 groups of people
1 - Those who have a faulty handset myself being 1 of them with WiFi issues, poor battery, low volume to name but a few.
2 - Those who don't have a faulty handset
3 - The fanboys who even if it was faulty they would never admit it.
Well those in group 1 need to return and get a replacement or a different phone. Those in group 3 need to wake up.
And let me add,
4. Those who really aren't that bright or lead a very pessimistic life
Is this a "Brit" only forum?
Just kidding, You guys are on target. The phone stock is GREAT and if you have a bug or two, well rooting and a few choice apps can make your phone even more awsum. Just taking the time to say that my Epic touch is GREAT!!!!
---Live long and prosper---
The SGSII is my first smartphone and obviously my first android phone too. I'm loving it and I don't have any issue to moan about (so far).
Great sig Darkside
I love my SGSII, that is all.

Pessimism is AWESOME!!! A pessimist is never disappointed!
The only reason I was starting to hate this phone was because I had to turn it in two times before I got one without a faulty display. It took almost a month.

Agree - I love this phone and the android community, but there are quite a few whining idiots around.
That said, we're still wayyyyyyyyyy better off than the iPhone 4S crowd. Lots of morons complaining there, and worse, they can't even do anything about it. iOS doesn't allow half the tweaks and hacks Android lets us do, especially if not jailbroken

LG G2 price drop bad news?

Does anyone think these crazy deals on the G2 means something is inherently bad with the G2? Maybe the networks are giving up on it or something else is coming out soon? Maybe this means there will be more out there so better dev support? I'm not sure but my wife and I are getting each getting one tonight.

Doubt it, I was told by multiple Verizon employee's that they we're selling more samsung and apple devices. One store didn't even carry the G2 for that reason.
Well then that very well might mean more dev support as those who are buying it are probably our type .

My android progression has been: HTC Thunderbolt, Galaxy Nexus, Droid Razr Maxx HD, and now the LG G2. This phone is AWESOME! Best of the bunch. I've seen the S4 and HTC One, and I think this phone is better than them (although I do really like the HTC One form factor). As you can see, I have no brand loyalty . Hopefully these low prices will get lots of people buying the phone and make it a lot more popular than it is now. It deserves to be in as many peoples hands as possible!
Verizon is doing this to keep its customers. The g2 is identical to the nexus 5, they know this. Anyone with half a brain knows this.
So, have people jump ship and go to sprint or att for 150 dollar phone?
Or they can stay on verizon, get the same phone for 50 bucks.
Verizon knows how to do damage control, they arent that stupid.
There will be a new line up of phones for 2014.
I dont know about you guys, coming from a 2 year old galaxy nexus, I sure as hell could not wait till 2014 for a new phone and This g2 will def last 2 years easily as long as no hardware malfunctions occur..

Except they are not identical. They are similar. :silly:
Isn't the rumor that some of the price drops are occurring because of the upcoming release of the White Version of the G2? At least for Verizon.
Just my two cents but it could be that LG is trying to push more units out and lure people with its price point. LG doesn't have a reputation like Samsung and Apple. They have invested a lot of money in advertising the G2 and I really think they are just trying to get peoples hands on this device. I fell in love with the G2 this way and I initially had the intentions of going sg4.
This phone is amazing and so many times of thought about trading it for a note 3 and said no because of litteraly everything about it. When I want to trade nothing gets in my way. The more people they can get the g2 in peoples hands the better chance lg might not ditch the phone and support it.

Best phone I've owned hands down - I've had many many phones, been a pretty big power user, had iPhones, Palms (Bold and Pre), and now all androids from HTCs, Samsungs, to now LG, Loved the S3, Note 2, and was ok with the S4, but thing thing is the best I've had by far and away out of any of them. I gave up on the S4 mainly due to the locked bootloader and the inability to run AOSP roms on it and may never be able to after the OTAs.
I am so glad I got this phone. You'll love it.

True they are similar and unless your just have to have a Nexus device the G2 for the masses is better than the N5.
Warning: included is a long history of my Android and parts of my development career which when read lends insight into how I feel.. But feel free to skip to the last few paragraphs. I've frequented XDA since I got my OG DROID and still don't have ten posts... Loser.. Lol.. Well, you've been warned so don't give me a top long I'm too lazy to read. Just skip it, or read the first paragraph or so and skip to the end.. Or read it all. I need more posts so I can start contributing to the dev section and figured I'd actually write what I felt instead of a "lol" just to increase my count.
The Nexus 5 surely doesn't get better battery life ^_^ So much for Google's claims of Kit Kat improving battery life by 20%. I started with the OG DROID and was a common visitor here (although I was to new to post anything useful. I came from being a veteran C/C++ Windows developer. I drove my programmers crazy cause they were all taught MFC - I would never write anything that included the MFC libraries and instead used the Windows Template Libraries. For some reason using templates was Greek to most of them. Never was officially released I don't think but as a MCP I had access to a lot of tools that the Microsoft team actually used themselves. It used templates instead of classes and made building UI easier with a tiny footprint (no larger than just using API) compared to the footprint MFC brought in.
Eventually I just switched to Visual Basic so my programmers could work and maintain the UI and I'd write all the non UI mess using C/C++ (sometimes Java) as distributed objects so that they could just use these lightweight interfaces inside of VB (or whatever language they wanted to use...as long as they could import them in from .dlls or the occasional .exe server. This eventually progressed to where I was used to just create distributed classes/interfaces. For example, the method used for shipping using the FedEx PowerShip Plus servers was to the manually feed in shipping data and the process wasn't integrated. I was working where we shipped music merchandising (musictoday.com). There was a better way. It took forever as FedEx has a huge manual of shipping codes. Wrote up interfaces and implemented. Used that model so that others could import in my implemented version and override whatever functions they needed (this was before VB caught up and allowed this sort of behavior in classes, before then just interfaces. FedEx eventually bought out this component and I got nothing since all my work belonged to them. Also created a ticketing system for several bands connected to a thermal printer to print them. Dave Matthews was the main one using it as our company (Redlight which owned musictoday and Starr Hill.. Owned by Coren Capshaw) was their managers. Their main rehearsal studio at home was adjacent to the gym there where I worked out every day for hours (pissing our CTO off, but i ran the show in the development department and he knew it). Ended up hanging out with him a few times at Boars Head Inn and a few others (too bad I hated his music.. Told him I couldn't stand it and he just laughed). Developed the Friends of Live fansite and I guess I was their first fan club member even though I never signed up (another band I didn't care for much.. I like rock but).. Realized later after I kept receiving VIP passes to their shows (all access backstag, etc.. Which i gave away btw to family) thst I was there first fan because I designed the database for the fan site as well (yeah, was forced to play way too many roles there) and had used my information while testing it out and when I switched it over from the dev database to the live one, I forgot that I had also entered my info in that one as well while creating tthe tables.. Lol
Sorry for the long post about some of my history, but when the OG DROID came out which was my first, my Windows development ceased and I decided to learn Android. Quickly found it was built on a Linux kernel and it took off quickly from there. I even wrote a lot of inline assembly inside some of the IIS extensions I wrote thst queried our database as it had to be fast enough to handle all the traffic querying at the time. I can brag our search routines were fast.. (specifically the routine for searching for concerts based on artist, venue, etc..). I had SQL procedures that parsed the actual query string that the user entered. Which had to be smart enough to detect wildly misspelled names and such.. It was hundreds of lines long). The IIS extension was the bridge and as anyone who's used IIS (well back then) knows, you couldn't write extensions that were heavy.. Or else you'd slow everything down. For making the actual SQL connections, queries, and retuning results, I used the lightest method I could find.. raw SQL with a lot of inline assembly. All that was written just to say I want to kill someone everytime I loolnat small machine code. I can maybe change a color somewhere or if lucky enable paid features on free apps if I'm able by grace of God to find where the correct switch is. And don't get me started other ****... It's like trying to write with your opposite writing hand while driving in a foreign country where they drive on the other side of the road and keep the quality of each at optimum levels. RGB colors for examle are not FFAA66..no..you have to reverse it.
Anybody downloading any mods here which involve reverse engineering and editing small should not take what they get for granted and be very appreciative to the developer. I've followed the scene since the beginning (HarvesterX) and helped out a little (such as on the old Avalon theme for OG DROID which ended up requiring more editing then we were capable of.). While I had my PC, I built a few of my own ROMs (gingerbread.. That's how long I've been without one and when I need to root a phone I use the work computer). Then in progressed to helping debug some applications for some awesome developers. Apps I'm sure the majority of anyone rooted and on here uses as well as ones who those who like to mod use. I don't develop em just debug and troubleshoot and test so I won't give names or credit for any of it. The point is to show that it does take time and lots of work and the guys/gals here are fantastic. If they are doing this professionally, they would be making between $44,000-$110000 a year from it depending on location and level of knowledge. To do this for free means thst you.. Thst we need to donate back by either donating to the develops themselves, or donate to a charity, or just give something of yourself.
Next phone was the Galaxy Nexus. Love or hate it.. It was a great phone when first released and the development was top grade. I went through a rough time in my life during these years and stayed out of actively developing anything or helping (I did throw out a little weather mod that showed the weather as an icon in the notification bar. Soon after I shared it on another site I saw it pop up on a very popular ROM. Didn't irk me.. I took it as a compliment I guess. I wasn't looking for credit. Was just to give back to some friends. Did some theme work for friends as well nothing big
When the GNex eventually died I was sad but happy a the same time. Loved the design of the phone and it could have still been good as a music server or something. USB Flex died on me and by the time the replacement flex arrived in the mail in and gave in and bought the G2 hesitantly. I had horrible past experiences with my baby mommas (ex thank the heavens) LG Ally. Everytime I has to use that phone I wanted to throw it against the wall. It wasn't BAD except crippled as LG decided to skimp on memory. If it had had the same as the OG DROID it would have been much better. I was able to root it and throw on the only custom kernel I could find and thst helped a little.. But the display was grainy and the only positives it had was having Stock Android on it. I knew I didn't want a Samsung device as their ethics have been questionable and frankly I had tried a Motorola (used several actually but only owned the one), a Samsung (again, used lots of em but owned one..), and wanted to see what HTC, Sony, and LG had to offer. Well Sony wasnt gonna happen as I'm not leaving VZW while I'm rocking their unlimited at $50 a month and getting 30-40Mbs downloads at home (can't wait til Advanced is turned on). T-Mobile isn't an option period where I live.. It's no contest). So it was between the One and the G2. I knew about each and the specs (want aware though of all the under the hood specs thst LG didn't advertise a lot, such as their advances in display technology and GRAM). The One is a wonderful piece of hardware and the sound and screen, and build quality screamed at me. If it was one of the unlockable Ones or a Dev Edition I possibly may has missed on the G2. When I saw the G2 I already read about how it was great but..I can't go on reviews.. They are biased as hell and I can't count how many times I've found completely false statements splattered all over a device's review. First impression was thst.. Damn this looks beautiful. Hadn't turned the screen on yet. Reviews said thst it was plastic, felt cheap, and fingerprint magnet. Hmm. Looked more like a high quality poly-carbonate material and it was solid. I was my hands at least two or three times a day.. As well as clean my phone once every day or two. Found the power button and wow. The screen felt like silk. That's all I needed to see. I had already known that dev support would be there for it and I was afraid if I waited then an OTA would come around blocking the loki exploit. Grabbed it at off contract price and realized.. "NO BEZELS!".. I smoke.. (switched to vaporizers though but back to cigarettes while looking for a really good vape.. One I had was crap..). Well thise who smoke I'm sure have had ashes end up inside the bezel and the screen and used tweezers or similar to remove if blowing didn't help... Lol ok yeah I love the phone. I can't say anything bad actually.. Well having bezels is great but also a little irritating at times (rarely but..). If you try to type or drag an icon or tap a link and you have a finger eight on the edge it can cause problems. Took me a while before I realized why my notification bar kept being pulled halfway down..
This huge post leads to the question at hand. Is the price cut good? I like having the G2 as a hidden gem. Had it at work yesterday because I had inadvertently formatted ALL of my data partitition (thanks TWRP! on one side you have format data and a big Warning.. So I go to advanced section and check the box there as I came from clockwork and that seemed the thing to do.. They had a huge Warning on the other button..). Well while downloading the latest CyanogenMod nightly and gapps (just to get something on the phone.. Looking for a ROM I like atm.. Like the CyanogenMod nightlies but calls drop often). The links to all the roms I wanted to try were all leading to dead ends yesterday.. Haven't tried today though. I was using the floor computer and had logged in as admin. During the time I was waiting for the downloads to finish three customers had came in (I sale and install wireless Internet, and one of the few technicians) migrated to see what I was doing. Then I started getting questions like "where are the buttons?" as I had it laying on its back. I had questions of if they could test it out and if it was for sale.. I laughed and said no its my personal one but they are welcome to play with it when I get an operating system back on it. They watched as I opened a command prompt up and pushed the files over and watched the whole recovery process (these are regular people who had no clue any of this was possible). After signing into CyanogenMod and Android I handed it over to the wolves. All three asked me how much and where they could get one (one lady asked me which carrier mine was running one.. Guess she missed all the Verizon branding.. Lol. I told them they could pick up one for AT&T or Verizon (stopped thwre because where I live those are the only viable options for a radius of 40-50 miles.. And a reason our propriety wireless Internet sells so easily.)
I don't know or inside them on the G2 or Android itself but as everyone here knows (and if you don't you will now), stores are going to push devices from the top manufacturers and among those, the devices that they can also sell you accessories for. That mean Apple and Samsung (and the DROID line). LG is known for appliances. And there isn't the plethora of accessories the salesman can tack on. If this phone was pushed the same as the Note 3 or the 5s the price would not be dropping as fast. LG has a history of rapidly dropping it's prices on phones because of this very reason. They can't muscle the store to push their merchandise so they have to resort to drastically cutting costs to recoup on the capital invested.
LG knows they have a hit on their hands as I've never seen as many commercials for any LG product as often as I'm seeing the various G2 comments. The problem is, the commercials aren't really memorable. OK.. Look at Nexus 5 sales versus G2 sales. The Nexus 5 is shipping out of inventory at Google almost as fast as they enter. Google knows how to market. They know the target audience for the Nexus 5 (and since the Nexus 7, the name has became a lot more mainstream). They never had to show one commercial. This leaves me torn. If the G2 had shipped with stock Android and updates straight from Google then it would have sold as fast if not faster then the Nexus 5. The best part is, it's just as easy to unlock (*cough* bypass) the bootloader on the G2 as it is for the Nexus 5. N5 has the advantage in updates.. Yeah we have 4.3 and will have 4.4 but until LG releases updated libraries for the G2, the 4.3 and 4.4 bulds will be a mix and mash of the new thst works mixed with older lib files. Same problem on the OG DROID, yes that was a HUGE hit.
It's not like LG isn't gaining recognition as they've developed all the latest Nexi.. Problem is thlse aren't sold as LG Nexus. In my opinion LG has been the most innovative this round of relaases. Yes they deserve more, but it's not a "Ah good job here's a good star" world. There are bullies on the playground and we all know the two bullies I'm talking about. LG has to keep fighting back and winning. They need to see the G2 as an astounding success (though I'm sure it will be passed on for having 1GB less RAM.. Which might be relevant by the next time upgrades roll around but for now... On Samsung stuff I get it as TouchWiz used 1GB of it..) instead of just a failed device. I recommend this phone to everyone. I show it to them and they say *I love it but can't afford it*.. Well its like $79 or cheaper.. How much cheaper do you want? I paid $549 for mine off contract. Hopefully by the time they jeep unlimited away I'll live where T-Mobile is solid or they'll expand here.
Yikes. Please don't quote him.

Hi,
Yes..., this...
XDA app crashes... Don't quote this post please
Have to disagree about the statement above (the g2 is identical to the n5) I have both and the g2 is much better than the n5 -front facing camera 2.1mp =back camera 13mp both better, sound quality much better, battery life is much better, not charged the g2 for three days and its at 13% and the design and quality on the g2 is, well its designed !whereas the n5 looks functional in comparison but then you are paying more for the g2, anyhow enjoy your phones, if you put the phones together and compare them the g2 just looks better, I think this phone is the best on the market right now
but that's just my thoughts.

Got my G2 today, my impression.

So I got my G2 today, and this is my impression:
I've heard a lot about this device. A LOT. And it made me desire it so bad. But I'm really disappointed.
1. With the speakers: they're bad. So bad. My previous device was HTC One, and switching from One to G2's speakers.. is a big downfall.
2. With the camera: it's bad. The quality is bad. On paper it's better than the One's but the quality of the picture is just not good. Looks too blurry and noisy altogether.
3. With the expectations: on paper the G2 is twice better the One [specs-wise], but I can't notice any difference using it.
4. And most of all - with the developers: the G2's UI is simply screaming "Root me! Flash another rom!". And I did. But no rom is good. I've tried 6 of them, one by one. First off, they're full of bugs, they're incomplete. Secondly, they fail to give you the Nexus 5 experience. It feels like you're using only the skin, a launcher, not a clean android rom. The developers are just not as good as the One's developers. The roms I had with the One were so good. The Nexus 5 experience was so good, I could feel I was using a Google Edition phone. No bugs, no imitations.
I'm already missing my One......

Holy crap, just go away already. Are you PAYING anyone for Dev? I came from the HTC One, and This phone runs circles around it. Better battery, YES better camera, better screen.
You criticising the dev community here is a very crappy thing to do. Very very sad.

I know it sounds bad. My apologies if I offended someone.
Just had to unload my thoughts.
Not to be argumentative...but I find posts like these absolutely bewildering. You had a Nexus 5, but got the G2. You like the HTC One, but turned it in and got the G2....and it sounds like you got the G2 based on what you saw in writing, rather than having tried it out -- at least not long enough to realize you don't like the speakers, camera, stock GUI, etc. I hope that, in making a purchase like this, effectively "blind", that you still have an option to return the phone -- that's the only option I can think of that would make an impulsive uninformed purchase reasonable, unless you have money to burn.
There must have been hundreds of posts describing the UI in detail, and dozens of articles discussing the pros and cons of the stock UI vs vanilla KitKat and the various ROMs that are available, along with many, many photos of the screens. Also - many, many articles that discuss and contrast HTC One speakers with those on the G2, and on many other phones. After 4 or 5 months on the market, there are SO many discussions pro and con on this phone that pretty much none of these topics should come as a surprise -- the only variable would be your personal reaction, and how your opinion comes down each topic. There are numerous people who absolutely love the G2, a number who don't like it, and many with mixed feelings. But it seems that virtually every major topic, including the ones you've described, have been fleshed out in great detail here and on another dozen or two sites. With the topics and points of contention - and strong personal opinion - well known, wouldn't it have made sense to explore these "live" up front, before making the purchase?
Again - I don't mean to be contentious, I'm just genuinely bewildered. Also - in the interest of full disclosure - I've been using cell phones for about 22 years and have owned dozens -- all different manufacturers, OS's, ROMs, carriers, etc. I was a flashaholic with my last few phones, most notably with my GNex (flashing ROM's many times a week at the end). For my purposes, to my taste, and based on a combination of criteria, this is the best phone I've owned or used, period. But, after reading about it in depth, I went to a couple of stores that had live test models, and spent enough time with a G2 to have an excellent idea of my reaction to each item that was a question for me. By the time I bought it, I knew I liked it, and that the issues some people complained about didn't bother me. In the time since I brought it home, I've come to appreciate it even more.
No doubt some will like it and some won't. It's great that we have choices. I simply don't understand knowing that polarizing issues such as the ones you describe exist, making a purchase without checking these out for yourself, and then coming online to complain about them after the purchase has been made. Am I missing something?
No intention of picking a fight or offending -- I simply don't understand this scenario.
A lesson in life for you.
1. Never read and listen things in one way. People like it, they praise it and say a lot of good things about it. Do read the negative side of it.
2. Do not just read on the web, go to store and spend 30' or 1hrs to really try it out before commit.
3. Do expect less, there is nothing perfect in this world, this one is good, don't expect the other as good as it. Latest doesn't mean greatest.
4. Seek your happiness elsewhere. If you don't like a "thing", just divorce it and marry the next one with care.
You heard a lot. A LOT about the G2 and still bought it? Thats braindead.
You dont feel a difference between the HTC One and G2? I'm having both Phones and the HTC feels a lot worse than the G2, performancewise.
Sound is worse than the htc? Of course, the one is having one of the best (stereo) speakers... lol ... you guy such a bad troll.
How do you not get the Nexus experience with CM11? Troll. This phone flies with cyanogenmod.

I agree with most of what you said, but you're also wrong; I've read lots, watched lots of videos, watched lots of screenshots of roms and stuff, read about pros and cons, read comparisons to the HTC ONE.
The only thing I couldn't do is try it live. I don't know where you live, based on your English I'll guess US, but in my country there's no place we can try devices, only iPhone and Galaxy because it's mainstream. Higher quality like HTC, LG, Nexus and stuff, are not offered by stores to try. Only people who are familiar with quality and brands buy these phones here, and we buy new phones based on what we're told.
I've bought the G2 for two reasons: battery and money. I'm short on money so I sold my One for cash, and bought the G2 in credit so I have some cash for a while. As for the horrible UI, I knew what I was getting into, but I thought that I could replace it with Google Edition roms like I did with the One when I didn't like the Sense, but as I mentioned, the developers are not as good and the roms they offer are bad compared to the roms of the One, so now I'm stuck with the stock GUI.
you're right in everything pretty much in regards to speakers/camera.
speaker: it sucks because it's tinny, but what's worse is LG uses their own limiter/compressor on it, which makes everything sound awful. i assume they did this so you could get maximum volume without clipping. with the help of xdabebb, i've disabled their equalizer/compressor/limiter and it sounds more natural now, but obviously volume is a bit lower because it's not amplified as high.
camera: yeah, it sucks. there's nothing more to say. i've never been this disappointed with a phone camera until now. the quality is just bad.

I'm not a troll.
I've used ARHD GE with my One, it felt like Nexus.
But with Paranoid and CM11, they changed something. It's not the same. There are bugs in the gallery, in the home screen you can only scroll to the right and not to the left and some other minor things, and it feels like a skin and not like a real stock clean android rom, like it with with ARHD GE on my One.

coming from the note 2 , G2 is a beast
It's the best smartphone I've ever used but sadly yes the speakers disappoints me
however i could never be happier with a smartphone
Still saying the devs are bad? The aosp roms have the same issues. Common among them is the freezing. Blame kernel source and drivers not the devs.
I feel that CM is amazing on the G2, especially for not have a designated dev for our device. The freezes aren't that big of a deal to me, but I can see how that might be very annoying to other people. This is by far the best phone I've had especially comparing to my previous HTC devices - original HTC G1, HTC One x. and HTC One. :good:

I don't think this is a good knee-jerk reaction to have. The devs aren't babies and I'm sure they can handle someone not thinking their work is up to par with another dev community. That said, as a prospective G2 owner who plans to root + ROM, it's definitely valuable to hear if things aren't as good as they seem to be. Sure I'm not going to base my entire decision off one guy's opinion, but I'll be more aware of these issues and it'll do nothing other than help me make an informed decision.
And to be honest, looking through a lot of the ROMs, he does seem to be right. I believe it when they say many problems will go away with the kernel source, but right now that's the state of things.
Well I don't usually chime in on threads like these but... anyway...
Ok I have had the HTC One (my son has it now)... Still have the S4...
I have a Sprint G2 on the latest ZVA update. Rooted with Xposed Tweaks.
I have to say that I'm not happy with the speakers but there are some mods out there that help this considerably. Your point on this is somewhat true.
On the Camera however... You are waaaaaaaaaay off! I have personally went out and compared pics between old HTC One pics, Current S4 pictures and G2 pics. There is no comparison the G2 pics are so much better and not just by a little its significant. I couldn't believe how much better.
I loved the HTC One but the reason I got rid of it was the Camera. The pics were just bad. Look at all of the reviews on Cameras... The G2 is always up there so I'm not just dreaming this up. Here is one of the better more comparison based Reviews...

Exactly... most of the phones that I have used lately the best setups are the Stock Rooted Roms with Xposed tweaks. I really feel that is the reason for less Custom Rom development. Really no need. Get rooted, use exposed, tweak and customize it how you like.

I used to think that too.. I've watched numerous still and video comparison videos, watches numerous samples, and I used to think that the G2's camera is the best out there.. but then I got it, started taking pics and videos, and it wasn't like what I've seen online at all.. Moreover, my brother's friend has G2 as well, checked his pics and videos, and it was the same - bad quality pics and videos.

[Q] HTC One or Nexus 5

If you were to choose, which would you upgrade to from the L9. I am upgrading on the 30th of april and I have been going back and forth between the two phones and it's driving me crazy!!

I did upgrade to the N5 and gave my wife my L9 lol, Although she's somewhat content with it.
I too was looking at the HTC One line and a couple other phones. I ended up with the N5 be cause it's pure vanilla, a developers phone, Long life of support/updates and It took at the most 5 mins to bootloader unlock, root and flash TWRP. There's so much going on in the N5 thread that its almost impossible to keep up with everything and it literally makes the L9 thread look like a ghost town. There's every ROM and kernel that you could want too. I stayed completely stock on it, except for unlocking the bootloader, rooting and recovery for like a month and then I couldn't resist anymore and had to flash a custom ROM and kernel just the other day.
I've been nothing but impressed with this phone... It's lightning fast and has an awesome screen. Love it!
I know it can be a hard decision but ultimately it's your choice, I recommend researching and comparing them and then deciding what's the best fit for you.
That's my problem. I think I have researched so much. Especially camera wise. Ultrapixel versus mega. Pictures are respectable from both models. The HTC one is out and there aren't that many changes over the old model. Which leads me to believe that the support for the one(m7) will continue. I mean its still a quad core phone. The n5 has a dedicated 18month loyalty agreement from Google so there's that too. User experience..... Blink feed and bloat or pure vanilla.......
I am also hesitant to purchase anything else made by LG....
Sent from my LG-P769 using xda app-developers app
This is my first nexus device and the pure vanilla experience is nice. The N5 camera does take pretty good pics for a 8 mp and with the HDDR turned on it's even better.
I definitely hear what your saying about LG, I said the exact same thing especially after my last 2 phones, the L9 and LG Motion... LG just loves to lock down their phone's. At least the motion has Loki. Even though LG co-created the N5, there's no evidence of LG's dirty work at hand here. HTC does make some solid phones though and I've owned 2, the HD7 and the almighty HD2. Both were great phones... I still have the HD7. The one thing that kept me away from HTC was the fact that I'm not a huge fan of HTC sense.
We should probably request to move this thread to the Q&A section too.

This phone stinks

I'm lucky enough to be able to test multiple new phones and I have to say I'm extremely disappointed with this phone. The cameras are worse than my LG v40 (with gcam mod of course), it's impossible to type with one hand because you're always touching the curved screen with the side of your hand so nothing actually comes out correctly without having to fix it 10X and Samsung has removed the ability to change basic settings like removing icon borders or change their size. Nothing about this phone is appealing and I LOVE Samsung phones. I've had a Note since the Note 2 (I'm typing this on a note 9) but this phone is just crap. The fingerprint reader is barely passable and bixby (although able to be turned off) is at best an annoyance. Please don't waste your time with this
overpriced paperweight, it's just junk.

Don´t buy it if you don´t like it, but I wouldn´t go as far as to call a Samsung Galaxy stinks, maybe an iPhone yeah but never a Samsung.
the smell is pretty good if u ask me, duno why ur stinks
definitely overpriced overhyped overrated. i read about annoyances, problems, design flaws. too many for such an expensive device. i wanted s9 for size. when i saw 10e even smaller with same screen size i bought it. expected more. no curved edges, can type, no problems. i didn't pay full retail price so it's barely acceptable for me. my next phone will be sd6xx-7xx mid range. no need to waste money on so much useless bs and samsung name.

I'm sure everyone has an opinion, but I'll bet yours isn't a majority opinion of the phone. So, it's not up to your high standards, I'm sure we'll live and somehow make do with it until something comes along that you'll approve for us. Yours is an opinion and nothing more, to be taken with a grain of salt.

Nothing about this statement or whatever this actually is, wouldn't even call it an opinion.
Your just stating user specific issues, and ok your entitled to express, but in doing so be more elaborate.
The S10+ has
Snapdragon 855/Exynos 9820
8/128gb Ram or 8/512 or 12/1tb
IP 68
Expandable memory
Great camera's
Headphone jack
Best display in class
To call this Junk is well bold but rather foolish, but I guess your just fishing for responses.
Now comparisons yes this costs say to a OnePlus 6T but this device has everything that that doesn't also.
Your saying the Ultrasonic fingerprint is barely usable, well many said that about the optical and well they were full of it as I never had an issue, as for the Ultrasonic i haven't received mine yet so I'll reserve judgement.
Anyway this is just fishing.
Return your junk and get something else to your liking.....it's that simple

I withdraw my remark, yours isn't an opinion, it's a rant, reminiscent of a 10 year old. I'm through here.

Sweetheart don't get bent because I felt like expressing my opinion, the same way you just expressed yours in response.
Here we are again with a long thread of "mine is bigger than yours" but "mine works better than yours" even if "mine and yours give us pleasure in our respective personal lives" ...

Fair point.
I have my S10 since Friday, and for me it is a good phone. Okay, at first time I have also sometimes problems with the touch screen, but I think it's only a thing of time. The finger reader also, I loved the finger scanner on the s7, when I buy the s8 I had at first time the New position of the scanner, but now the handling after two years are great for me. I think the same is on the s10, give it some time and then the handling would easyer.
But I missing also some features from my other Samsung phones, like the led notification or the automatic unvisebelle navigation buttons, I hope Samsung bring some updates.
The best is when I can install root, then it is really my phone and the Good time is beginning. and when it's not your phone, then it is also okay.
*sorry for my english*
Each to their own
Mevlike many think it's the best phone on the market
Overrated and overpriced junk is what iPhones are
i just got my S10+ after an iphone X ,
first of all it is the best samsung i ever used till now coming from
S1 - S2 - S3 - Note 3 - iphone 6 plus - Note 5 - S7Edge - Mate 9 - Mate 10Pro - Iphone X
and the S10+ frankly is miles ahead of the Iphone X and i was not expecting that to be honest
the only point i can agree with the OP is that the screen edges make it hard to use it in one hand , but no problem for me as the screen is fantastic
Yeah, I'll admit the fingerprint sensor isn't as accurate as the capacitive sensors from before, but we've already seen an improvement with the latest firmware and I have confidence that it'll get even better. I think the biggest thing though is that it's ¥different "and it'll take a bit of getting used to how it works.
As for the cameras, it's not really a fair comparison to use the GCam camera app to compare. Yes, it uses Google's image processing, it doesn't take advantage of Samsung's specific features (variable aperture, for example). I'm also not sure if it supports all three cameras on the S10 - it's a mod after all, and may need to be updated.
That said, the beauty of Android is choice. What works for one person may not work for another. I absolutely despise LG's skin, and they're even worse than Samsung when it comes to updates.
Is there a such thing as a bad phone, any more? I don't think so... The new iPhones are great phones, even if they lack the bells and whistles of Android... As far as hardware goes, top notch. And so long as you are cool working within the box that Apple built, they are solid. It's only when you want to tinker and fiddle with them and do fun, but for the most part unnecessary things with them, that they fall short...
The S10+ seems solid so far. Yeah, there is some bloat... big deal... Disable it or uninstall it and call it a day... if you don't like Bixby, turn it off and remap the button. If you don't like the layout of OneUI, install a launcher. You can still do pretty much all the things you need or want, without root these days. Unless you are completely anal retentive and just have to change some inane thing to feel extra geeky and brag to your geeky friends how you have the coolest battery icon or DPI setting, it just doesn't matter. It's a PHONE. You make calls on it, check your email, catch a Netflix show and maybe play a game. It's not a way of life, it's an appliance, that you will likely get bored of and replace in the next 6-12 months anyway... Do you obsess the same way about your electric toothbrush or your microwave or other appliances? Probably not...
If you keep this all in perspective, pretty much any phone will do. I have used Samsung, HTC, OnePlus, Apple, Moto, LG, etc... In years past, there were some lemons... but today it is hard to find a BAD phone, at least in the flagship section... None of them are perfect, but they are all quite good.
I just laugh when I see people trying so hard to nit-pick some obscure inane thing, trying to pretend that it matters or that the average person gives a crap...
"You can't uninstall the GoT bloatware game, I need those 30mb of storage back!"...
No you don't. It's like 0.1% of your storage space, disable it and shut up. It's not hurting you. LOL

Well that was a thought out reply......
But agreed most phones (flagships) offer up more that we shall ever need....
Yeah, I mean these are temporary appliances, nothing more.
I guess just blanketing the phone as not being good is a bit harsh, I was excited for this phone only to be so disappointed within the first 10 minutes. I feel like Samsung really messed this one up and I've seriously loved their phones for almost a decade. Just the inability to type in Gboard without the edges messing everything up (not sure why it's so bad with this phone, it was never an issue for me before) makes this one a lemon in my eyes. I'm not going to pull the "I'm never buying Samsung again" but they just can't ever seem to take a step forward without taking one back. I feel like this isn't the phone that's worth the sticker price.
