moved from a g4 to a g5 - photos looks worst than g4, how is it possible ? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hey there,
I had my LG G4 for about a year and I loved it. although i replaced it once because of the famous boot-loop problem but still, it was a good phone in my opinion. one of the things that i liked about him the most it's his camera. every time i took a picture i felt it was really mind-blowing and quality wise it was really amazing comparable to other phones on the market. so i thought to myself - why not upgrade to g5 ? had a nice trade-in deal and i did it.
well? the phone is good - battery life amazing compared to g4, screen is clean and nice, fingerprint sensor is amazing, speed and usability is amazing.. but the camera ? meh. didn't really liked it. yes, the 135 degrees camera is a really nice gimmick but the standard 16mp camera doesn't the same pictures as my g4 used to take. i'm really frustrated about this thing since camera quality is one of the most important feature to me.
i'm really considering a downgrade to G4 or maybe buying a v10 (which camera features is really off the hook with the manual video mode).
any thoughts ? someone upgraded from a v10 ? someone feels the way i do ?

I compared a G4 and G5 side by side and the G5 was taking better photos. Maybe your lense is dirty or you have some wrong settings?
My girlfriend's G4 defninitely is worse when it comes to color accuracy and lighting.

I have to agree with lolmensch's post just above . I recently went to visit a lab and forgot the SLR (good camera) that I normally take. I used the G5 and the photos came out very well. Not sure I will bother taking the other camera in the future. For these photos I need to get good detail and be able to zoom in to see small features. The color reproduction also seems to be good.

well, to me it seems that sharpness was better at G4, also low light auto mode was better. post processing colors- liked it better also. btw - i always check that the lens are clean and settings are regular (i have also a DSLR camera and i know how to take pro shots )

I have had to get my G5 replaced, but the replacement seems like the camera is not close to being as good as my original G5.
Ive had apps installed and checked the components side by side ans apparently they are identical? But it seems like there is something different?
In response to the G4 statement, my G4 was amazing and side by side could keep up with the G5 or even excel.
But remember the G4 has had the luxury of a few updates to iron out creases. Lets see what the G5 is like after the same?

Make sure you're not saving images to an external device. For some reason, the camera app degrades photo quality when this is the case.

something is wrong with your camera, plain and simple. I have a iphone 6, samsung s6 & 7 and g4. The g5 is as good or better than all of them. If i crop a picture it does not lose sharpness or get pixelated if you zoom in on a pic it looks amazing and has great detail and the colors are the truest your going to find on any smartphone. The only thing the camera is not top tier is low light shots they are not as good as s7 .

LG G4 vs. G5 pictures
I have both, LG G4 and G5. The G4 produces sharper pictures that the G5, side by side; however the G4 is a little over enhanced. I extracted both pictures to compare them on my PC.
Manufacturers adapt their screens to make their photos look good. The true test is not on the phone screen but on a computer one.
Of course picture quality is not only its sharpness...
If I had to forgo my DSLR, I'd chose the G4 over the G5

My G5 makes better and sharper pictures then my old G4.

In this review the quality of the camera seems really good for the price, what do you think ?

Seems he put alot of into the manual customization and got a good product. Seems like the low light camera as is, is pretty much a lost cause. Nothing too new

I don't know if i would call it good for the price. It is a strange choice of camera sensor which seems like it was some kind of Samsung R&D experiment that didn't go quite right. The camera performs fine in prefect conditions, but the low light, the lens flaring, the AF hunt and slow re-focus, HDR ghosting, bad OIS, worse EIS... i hope it's software correctable but i don't think ZTE will put that much work into fixing it and I don't expect Samsung to help either (not in their interest). It has good manual controls except the focus locking, but that means you are bound to miss some shots or walk away with blur. Shame considering other specs, but camera is a big part of the phone now, it's probably the 3rd most reviewed feature after performance and design
Get a G5 if you care about the camera a lot. You can get them for $400 mint condition on ebay easily and the camera is pretty good. Not S7 good but close to second best.
Good, in-depth review

I would probably get HTC10 in that case, not a fan of LG. I am at this point waiting to see what new nexii will look like.
I agree that the G5 is also a good deal considering the price drop, but as I'm going to China next month I'm looking for the perfect chinese phone...
And yes, camera is an important feature of phones now.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the LG G6 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
This camera is amazing. Sometimes the LG camera gets the white point a little off. For example, if you're in a restaurant with a lot of red lamps, it may read as a warmer setting. This is something that can be adjusted manually (and easily fixed in an image editor)
I feel like some of the details are "smoothed" out, but I don't know if that has to do with the camera as much as the app. It's not necessarily bad. If you take micro shots, it's more noticeable, this smoothing effect. It may be a setting in the camera... if you want crisp shots, it's certainly feasible. For example, I was taking up close shots of the fabric of the clothes I am wearing. However, sometimes it is hard to get the camera app to focus on the right thing. It's worse the closer you are to the subject. However it can definitely focus up-close with the non-wide angle camera, though I think a bit less than my Samsung S5 used to be able to do. If you need textures for graphic design work, it's definitely feasible though.
Camera does do some heavy post processing. You can tell when you zoom in.
First Picture is using Stock Camera Auto Mode
2nd Picture is using OpenCamera Camera2 API Auto Mode
3rd Picture is using RAW OpenCamera Camera2 API Auto Mode
I think the wide angle is garbage for landscape shots. Click on photo and zoom in a bit you'll install see what I'm talking about. I love wide angle for closer you shots though. 2nd photo of fire is really just to show why u love the manual settings.
Does anyone use any other camera application to unlock the full potential of this camera? coming from the Galaxy s6 edge, I really liked their camera application and was easy to access the more advanced settings (iso, exposure, ect...) this camera allows that but it makes it very difficult and is overly complicated when those settings are finally available.

Using a camera app other than LG's own stock camera app will most likely result in poorer quality images. LG specifically optimizes their app to take advantage of the phone's hardware to the fullest potential.
Thus why if you ever flash a non-stock-based ROM, you will find that your camera is just not as good as before.

The manual option gets easier when you figure out how to use it.. You'll be able to get some great pics with it.

Yeah... other then the stock App. for Camera results in lower quality photos like when i use the Z-Camera App. which is great for Editing but other then that use stock
I really like the camera, feels like an upgrade from G5, but too bad there's no 13mp 16-9 mode
Why is nobody here talking about the front camera? The rear camera has a horrible oversharpening effect and the front camera is plain trash (normal & wide both). What I further do not understand is why the 13MP mode doesn't have a 16:9 or 18:9 ratio. Clicking pictures in 4:3 on this already narrower display is a mediocre experience. With the G6 camera being ported to the G4 already, I do not find a single advantage having the G6 over G4 for still photography (both manual & auto). Why are people being irrational and praising a sub-par camera setup on the G6?
I just got my Indian G6 (64GB & Quad-DAC). I am coming from an LG G4 (H818N) and I haven't been impressed by the cameras. The display on the G6 is better, the design & ergonomics are better, the build quality is exceptional too. But if you have used a G4 or an S7e or an iPhone 7, you will not like the cameras on this one.
For anyone reading this who is out to buy a new device, if you prefer a good smartphone camera you will be let down. Go for a Pixel or S7e or S8/S8+ for better camera performance.

I have a Xiaomi Mi5 too. What I did notice for sure is that the Mi5's front camera is way better that the one on the G6. Also, the back one seems better on low light conditions. The one on the G6 seems to "lag" in stand-by mode. On the G6 : the main camera is having exposure and saturation issues, the wide angle one has oversharpening issues. I don't know what everyone are praising about... I sure hope they will fix some issues with the next updates.
I kinda feel sorry I didn't chose the S7 Edge.

You are still talking about a recently launched device. The G6 front camera is worse than my good old G2 and S4. I have a Oneplus 3 in my house whose front camera is way better than this S#! T on G6. How I wish we had return policies here in India. Very disappointed. I am done with LG atleast for this life time! ?

Hmm. I'm getting a little confused. I was considering buying the Huawei p10, because I want to use my mobile more, for taking pictures. Then the LG G6 is on a discount, making the G6 almost as cheap as a Huawei p10. And some reviewers says that the G6 camera is better than the P10 also in low light.

If you do not care about the front camera, the G6 is probably the best phone for you. But if you do care about the selfies and also want exceptional quality stills, I'd suggest going with the Pixel or Pixel XL.

Should I buy the G6 coming from the V20 (UPDATE: NO)

Hi Guys,
I'm rocking the great LG V20 B&O edition and It's awesome, but I have to admit, it's a bit too big, the LG G6, Korean model seems very similar, QUAD-DAC, same size screen, a bit better CPU, 64Gb, etc etc... I can sell my V20 and put £30 more and get the G6, would you guys do it? Really not sure if it would be an upgrade, as I've seen that the G6's screen doesn't get as bright and the front camera is bad, but the G6 is better looking, more compact, IP68, no camera hump and better looking (I know, twice xD).
What has been your experience with the G6? does the 18:9 aspect ration been an issue? Opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for you time XDA community.
UPDATE:
It's been 2 weeks that I've been trying out the G6 and averall I'm pretty happy with it, but don't feel that it was a good swap and here are my reasons for it:
Things I don't like about the G6 compared to V20:
- The G6 is behind security updates compared to the V20, I had June update on the V20 and G6 still with April Security update.
- Screen backlight bleed from the bottom, when using always on display in the dark.
- Front Camera is just bad, I'm not a fan of selfies, but I do it sometimes with my kids and it's bad...
- Main camera, it's not that great compared to the V20, V20 was far superior, the G6 has a lot of over sharpening even in decent light and it looks unnatural.
- It takes a second or 2 to take a picture, missing sometime the money shot.
Things I like about the G6 compared to V20:
- Looks amazing and feels amazing in hand
- Far less lags navigating the UI
That's it really...
So considering going back to the V20 now selling the G6, buy the V20, which is cheaper now and still make some money... What I'm saying is, if you have the V20, keep it, the G6 is not an worthy upgrade IMHO.

G6 all the way!!
Just get a Bootloader unlockable variant if that is important to you... The main cameras are very good, the screen is awsome, also, I haven't had any trouble using the phone in direct sunlight, but I guess that varies from user to user... Also the front camera is not that bad really, it's just kinda cold in the colors, and it might get a little grainy in low light conditions, but I've taken great pictures with it already, plus you do have the smart flash, skin tone, and lighting adjustment, filters for more saturation/hotter colors to apply on the fly before taking a pic... So it's actually quite decent IMO. If you really want a quality selfie, use the main shooter with OIS (and that goes for any phone no matter how good the front camera may be), you got the cheese shutter command to take the pic by saying smile, cheese and other words, the hand gesture, timer, and the volume down button to take a selfie easily!! Also the IP68 is just so awsome!!! Take pics/videos underwater... And just for fun... Dive your new G6 on a Glass of water in front of your friends (I did, it was hilarious!)!!
Anyway... Those are my 2 cents...
I love my G6... Apart from not being able to unlock the Bootloader... But that isnt the G6's fault... It's the sticks in the butt of whomever makes decisions at LG :'D!!!

Definitely a good phone. If you're looking for a smaller foot print, the G6 is the way to go.

I switched from the V20 to the G6.
Don't hesitate just do it. The only thing you'll regret is waiting so long to switch. I'll never go back to a big screen and low screen-to-body ratio.
Plus the V20 for me was super laggy camera sucked fingerprint scanner inconsistent just really felt like the V20 was over hyped.
The G6 however, despite the crappy sales numbers, is the best phone of 2017 so far.
The only thing that is an upgrade from V20 to G6 is the battery life basically and also the wide angle lens quality. Though if you prefer a smaller phone it might be wise the G6 is much more portable.
Go for G6 only if you like Compact size and match color before you buy both . Black feels ordinary. Platinum feels more premium to me.
If you can adjust the size. Wait for V30 or G7
Thanks for all the comments guys, I did it, G6 with Quad DAC ordered? I'll compare both and sell the one I think that doesn't deserve my pocket can't wait for the G6 ?

You gotta love the Internet, did I ticle your 4$$ with my opinion? And what the hell are you on about, both have Dual SIM, Quad DAC and the G6 has a 18:9 aspect ratio, which right now it's not used by most video players, if you don't agree with what I said, that's fine, I'm just telling G6 owners my opinion, in case they're in the same situation as I was. The G6 is simply not an upgrade from the V20.

LG G6 vs Samsung Galaxy S7

Hello,
which of those two phones would you prefer? Is the G6 camera with the 2.09mm lense still better than the S7?
Because i need a phone with a good camera.
g6
I had S7. After one month of baby sitting it it was FULL of scratches on the screen. Never ever saw anything like it before. I know that it was not my fault since i used S2, S5 and OnePlus 3 for years under the same conditions without a single scratch. After that horror experience I switched to G6. Not the slightest scratch in half a year. Some people claim they don't have problems with S7 scratches. Perhaps older batches were indeed Gorilla Glass 4 but the newest ones ... I recommend avoiding by all means. So go for G6.
G6, one of the best phones I've owned.
G6 for :
Design, screen, music and ui
S7 for :
Camera (better but dont have a wide angle), more compact, led notification
I preferred to spend a little more in a g6 because it is more original, we see few people with (I've never met someone with) and because the wide angle sensor is a really nice feature
in any case it's two phones that are worth, they will give me a pleasant user experience, you see according to your budget and the one you like most

No, the sensor on the G6 is way worse than the one found on S7 and also worse then older G series device, check it out if you don't believe me xD
G6 makes, in fact, good photos in auto thanks to the LG software, and in manual thanks to the wide optimization choices.

1. If you used to take photos in Auto Mode then it is S7.
2. S7 also takes better photos in Low Light.
3. But S7 doesn't have a good battery life.
4. Plus, it has Amoled screen which is Good.
In Case of G6,
1. Daylight camera shots are better than S7 but in low light it is not good.
2. But if you can use Manual Mode then G6 wins by miles. G6 (and V30)'s manual mode is the Best in class.
3. G6 has slightly better battery life.
4. G6 has HDR10 but complaint screen. If you watch a HDR content then you can find the differences in between HDR and Non HDR content.
5. G6's UI looks bad but smoother than S7's touchwiz. But you may use a Pixel launcher or Nova launcher to avoid that.
Last, You can install Pixel 2 modded camera apk easily on G6 where S7 might cause some issue. In this case, check with Xda forum in detail.
(Note: Both are IP68 certified phone)
I've used both and this is my over all experience.
I wanted to upgrade from the G6 to the Galaxy S9+ but found out that i lost the Verizon Edge plan when I switched from the GS7 to the G6. So i have to pay another $392. That makes me so mad. I waited till March to trade my phone in and now i can't. So it was cheaper for me to buy a refurbished GS7 off of ebay. Funny thing is they're older then the G6 but worth the same amount of money. I like the big screen of the G6 but the camera software of the GS7. Both cameras take muddy pictures. And i can record concerts good with the G7 as i used to have one. But the two concerts i recorded with the G6 the audio is awful sounding. the phone can't handle the bass and it causes the vocals to fade in and out like the limiter is out of sync. I notice with the GS7 i got now that the signal strength is 1-2 bars and when talking on the phone the HD voice sounded kind of muddy and hard to hear because of the weak signal. With the GS7 i don't remember what it the signal strength was but it was loud and clear when i was on the phone. So how does the signal strength and call quality compare to you guys?

Is the G6 still it's money worth? Especially for the camera?

Hello,
i have the oppertunity to buy an LG G6 for 360€ and i want a phone with a good camera. Is the G6 still its money worth? Or should i buy another phone, like a S7 or something?
G6 is still the best choice. I also just got it 3 weeks ago for 380€.
The cameras on the G6 are average, at best. I wouldn't recommend the S7 instead though, overall the G6 would be better.
Average? lol
my new g6 will arrive monday, if all goes well. i narrowed my choices to the g6, the s8, the mi mix 2 and the oneplus 5t. i chose the g6 because it's the cheapest, the smallest (i don't care for the curved display of the s8 a bit). for me the only thing against it is that it has the 2016 snapdragon, but i figured it will still be ok with my usage. otherwise the g6 seems on par (and in some respects better) than the other choices.

Yeah, that's right, G6 uses a IMX258 sensor which is REALLY awful for a flagship device.
If you're good and you plan using the Manual mode then go for G6, with Manual (thanks to the good lg software for camera) it takes beautiful photos, but if you plan to use the Auto Mode more go for something else.
Camera is trash.
Other features is decent.
Design is good (optional).
Software is stabile.
And why is it in your opinion trash?
Camera is decent with very natural colors. If you want more eye catchy processed pictures, then you have Google HDR+ camera port.
the camera is average. i would give it a 6. maybe 7 if you play with with manual mode. but front facing camera is totally horrible. a 3 at best.
The camera is excellent. Though that's only if you're using the GCam port. The LG app photo quality is just....bad.
My gf have s7 and she love my g6 camera so idk what you all talkb about s7 camera sucks
My thoughts are that most people can not handle a camera correctly lol
Cant take photos lul

G6 has a sensor of low budget phone, here is the list with other phones that use it: https://www.kimovil.com/en/list-smartphones-by-lens-model/sony-imx258
I'll repeat myself, if you're able to use manual mode at it's best then G6 can take beautiful photos if compared to any other flagship (beside in low light conditions and for the Front Camera), but in auto it sucks, and when i say "sucks" i compare it to other flagship devices, it does not take horrible photos like a 100 euros phone, but they're not as good as the photos taken with other flagship or in manual.
Don't believe it? I don't care, i just wanted to give you an answer based on my experience on almost 12 months with the G6, and after 10 months with G5, which, in Auto Mode, is still better.
And have you tried the Google Camera HDR+ port to take photos? The LG App isnt really good. And im not that guy who uses the automatic mode on a camera, the Auto Mode is always a compromise.

Yes, and G5 is still better imho, obviously i'm always talking about auto mode, in manual it's a completely different story since the camera app on G6 is better than the one found on G5.
Take in count that the other flagships has also modded version of stock camera/porting, or other camera apps that improve considerably the performance of it.
As i said before the problem of G6 is that you start from a way worse sensor than competitors, that's it, you can do a lot trough software, but the hardware is still limited.
Then can you tell me, why the HTC U Ultra has a better chip than the G6 but takes worse photos?
Many cameras are looking supersaturated and thats not a sign for a good camera. Bud sadly many people like this unrealistic look.

Probably because HTC's software is worse than the one found on LGs, better hardware doesn't necessary means better performance, power is nothing without control.
The most debatable thing is the Camera on G6. Just get the Gcam port and you'll never regret purchasing this device (Except the slow updates ). Its cheaper than Op5t and offers amazing screen and build quality over it. The Hi-Fi dac is fun to. And it's Ip68 water and dust resistant so it will handle Water dip easily . But if you prefer Latest hardware and high specs Op5t is the option. Although Lg G6 can handle all task easily too.
