Complete noob looking for advice flashing a completly unknown phone - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
So I was recently thinking of upgrading my phones android, since its only a ****ty 4.2, but I've been running into some problems having never done this before, let me be as quick and concise as possible.
Phone: Its an Evolio x6, I cant post external links yet, but its a 5.5inch, 2gb RAM, 1.7ghz octa-core processor thingy, made by a romanian company so thats why its pretty rare to see anyone using it.
I'm trying to upgrade it to something around an android 5, but anything above 4.4 would work, my problems are:
1. Is any ROM gonna work? Does the ROM have to be compatible with the screensize/hardware? From what I've seen specific phones have specific ROMs they can use, but since barely anyone has this phone I cant really find anything online.
2. If I install some non-functional ROM, can I recover the old OS? Since I cant find the factory ROM anywhere on the internet.
3. I've seen quite a few guides, but most of them mention "google a good ROM for your phone", are there any ROMs that you guys think might work for mine?
4. When I go into recovery mode I dont have any Nandroid options/backups, is there another way to backup everything on the phone?
Thanks for your time, sorry for bothering you guys, and have a great day ^.^

[Q]LG P500 update to 2.3.3 and rooting

Hello everyone,
so i registered yesterday in this forum, know it for a while now but was never useful to me because the "coolest stuff" to do on my LG always was needed to root it and i was (and still am) a bit afraid of doing it, since i dont understand nothing about it but i heard it can mess up your phone. So i thought of posting something here.
So i have a LG P500 and yesterday i updated the firmware or software (dont know how to call it). Now i have the official Gingerbread udpate. I was a bit disappointed as i always wanted to have that locking animation that nexus S has.
Yes, i know you might tell me to use the search button but i looked for something similar and someone said something about rooting the phone to use the CM7.
So what i wanted to know is. What are the pros and cons with rooting. Do i need to "instal" CM7 or something like that to have that lock animation even having the 2.3.3 official update? Do you advice me to root my phone even though i bought it a few months ago?(like march or something)
Im sorry if i should searched a bit more but i think its better to just talk directly with people who understand this phone stuff better then i.
Thank you in advance!
Ps: Im portuguese and i know there are a few portuguese members here, if any of them could help me with this i would appreciate!
I myself upgraded to the LG 2.3 gingerbread firmware v20b
and it sucks to the core
i downgraded to froyo v10e the very next day itself
the pro's of rooting is that
you get access to the core android files
and use your phone to the max
(example overclock, customized ROM's,hardware acceleration etc)
in short you get a much better phone and no lg crap bloatware etc
the con's are
if rooting doesn't go properly you'll end up with a bricked phone
and your warranty will be void
my suggestion is
if your not so much into your cell
i mean you dont use it a lot for 3D gaming and other hi resource using applications
and just need for messaging,music,net
then dont root
else root
and enjoy your phone

im sure there are applications
or some launcher which will have what your looking for
Just do it.
I rooted it 3 days after I bought it.
But be careful while doing so, there are chances of bricking your phone.and yes, warranty will be void. But you can, anytime,go back to stock firmware just in case if you want your warranty.

Hi,
For me the main advantage of rooting is that you can use a custom recovery (= do nandroid backups) and that you can install different kernels (better performance but mainly better battery life).
I have been on official 2.3.3 since months now (waiting until Andy's Phoenix ROM matures a bit), and I must say that I'm quite happy with it (with LauncherPro of course).
Just be sure to install a good recovery (CWM 4.0.1.5 or so) and that you make a nandroid backup before you flash something new.
Oh and here's the howto I used to root my brother's phone yesterday...

And here's a collection of working recovery images (flashable)

So to see if i get it, by "custom recovery" you're saying i can use a "custom image" that someone created to improve my phone?
I didnt quite undestood the nandroid and CWM recovery parts! Im really sorry for all the questions but im still a noob in this area and i was hopping i could get to know a little more about this in this forum!
Ps: thank you all that answered till now!

Hi, as u said u r novice, & does not know anything.
My suggestion is to use ur cell for few months & search in google & XDA whatever u have doubt. Then understand one by one things.
I am telling because my cell was bricked with doing all these things, I voided warranty & i have to change my entire board for 3,000/-
I think no use with all these rooting & flashing, roms, getting headache with this stuff.
Just use ur phone as it is, & u may install new new softwares & games as market is producing a lot daily.
I have bad experience with all these experiments.
Rooted my p500 successfully ...
Rooting is NOT for novices.
Rooting requires some basic (to slightly advanced) understanding of the way this android software works. It also requires some basic understanding of the way in which kernel, over-clocking etc., work. And, one should also understand the limitations (of hardware, processing power, storage, RAM etc.,) of one's mobile phone.
Thankfully, I rooted my P500 successfully yesterday. And, loaded Titanium Backup and got going in the `rooted mobile' arena.
Removed some unwanted/useless applications like bollywoodji, vaccination tracker, etc., successfully.
i think rooting is a piece of cake. enable debugging mode, connect phone to pc, press the ROOT button

Actually very few people have bad experiences with rooting and related stuff. Most of us (including me) have done it right, and are enjoying the benefits.. Just follow the instructions carefully and everything will be alright. And make sure that whatever process you do, it is NOT INTERRUPTED in between. That's all.
Also, if you were in the stock froyo firmware, you could have simply rooted using gingerbreak. The 2.3 based firmware can also be rooted, but requires a few more steps, you can search and find out about that.
I would personally suggest not to use ROM manager for installing custom recovery on your P500, because when I used it, my phone got stuck in the fastboot mode. But with a little effort I could make it right.
All the best!

[Q] Rooting, Flashing, Custom ROM questions from a noob!

Hi everyone,
I am new to the android world having just bought a galaxy s2, so please be gentle. I'm a previous iphone owner and always hated the restrictions apple put on their phones and dictated the way I could use my handset! I've since moved over to android and my first impressions are OMFG, how confusing is all of this!! I'm not techphobic by any means but I am struggling to piece together how the world of android works and I have spent a lot of time reading various things about ROMs, rooting, flashing, kernels etc... but I am getting more and more confused!
I recently bought a Galaxy S2 which is running a custom ICS ROM on it (resurrection remix 1.0) and also has CWM on it. Having looked at the forums i can see that another version in out (1.3 i believe) but i'm very hesitant to try a flash as i dont want to screw my phone.
The way I see it i've got two choices, either try and reset the phone to stock so that warranty etc... remains uneffected and then update to ics through kies when its available or try and install a later version of one the ics ROM's that are availabe. I was wondering to that end if you lovely people coudl give me some guidance.
If I were to reset my phone to stock how do i do this bearing in mind i am confused about
a) what kernels are in the first place and
b) which one i woudl need for my phone and will I need a usb jig for this?
c) -i need to unroot my phone to return it to stock and if so how do i do this
also:
-what is the difference between an insecure and secure kernal
-if i flash my phone to a newer version of ics can i revert back to 1.0 as at the mo apart from the odd app crashing here and there I'm not having any probs with it.
I'm reading about GAPPS and APKs and dont know what the hell these are either but they keep popping up every so often.....basically i'm confused and on the verge of a breakdown!!
Please could somebody help mw with this and massive apologies if i've posted where i shoudnt have.
Thanks in advance
Saf
If you had taken the same time took for typing here to search and read you would have learnt almost everything...
go through these stiky threads
also see my links in singnature.......read as much as possible....no other substitute for reading and learning, nobody will answer you in essays like you typed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544657
Appreciate what you're saying mate and thank you for taking the time to reply. I have been reading various threads over the last day or so but the problem is when something like this which is quite techinical is completely new territory you dont know where to start. Google throws up page after page of stuff that doesnt make much sense and i've searched on the forums here and read up on quite a bit but again am not sure if i've grasped it.
problem is I didnt install the custom ROM on the phone, i bought it like this and to do anything further with it i dont know if i need to go back to the original owner with more questions or can i just go ahead and start tinkering with it without knowing what software was originally on the phone? (bearing in mind that various posts state that you need certain software which is as close to the original one as possible)
Thanks anyway
Saf
this is the stage which passed by all the noobs including me, dont worry
Your strating treble will only be over when you start flashing a ROM,
cool.
ima go ahead and try and install version 1.3 of resurrestion remix! Wish me luck hehe!!
Good luck,
dont forget to follow the steps mentioned the ROM thread atleast...

[Q] Star S7589 - "Good" Custom ROMs?

Heya there!
I've searched for hours now and found just a few ****ty looking ones...
Yes, I know this is a cheap China phone and I should not expect much from such a thing.
But I've read that somehow CyanogenMod was working on a port for the S7589? I'm not sure tho, I've searched for it but found, as said, nothing...
I already was at the NeedROM site and searched for ROMs there too but every ROM is just... Meh...
They do not look trustworth enough to be fully happy with them... (And all of them seem to have the same, weird instructions...)
So do you guys know if there is any good Custom ROM for this device? Maybe even one that gives the possability to skip the Internal Storage and let's me install directly onto SD/Phone Storage?
Thanks!

[Q] A few questions about the Note 2

Hello, Im new here, Just heard about XDA and how its the best forum (knowledge-wise) out there. I dont have enough knowledge and experience with smartphones (Im more of a PC freak, building and hardware and stuff) but smartphones are a whole different subject.
lately Im having some "hangings" on my Galaxy Note 2 (N7100, 4.1.2 stock) it started when browsing firefox, and continuing to Whatsapp, it started freezing for a minute or so.. (which is quite a long period of time like u probably know.)
I started checking the whole Root&ROMs subject, and also found out that there's a way to update my phone to Android 4.3 JellyBean.
so here are my q's , What is the most CURRENT stable OFFICIAL OS (from what I saw online there's no 4.4.2 for Isarel-ILO (if it matters at all? Because I've seen a few official EU versions from various countries) and people just get a custom ROM of 4.4.2 to run it and also that quite a few ppl on here had some issues with it and were pretty happy about 4.3. So what do u think ?
also, I will probably need the best ROM for the OS you will recommend next (from what I read ROMs can boost phone performence) but I am not sure about it yet
but I am certain that I'm gonna root my phone, but can u tell me exactly how does rooting help ? I mean in which aspects and such..?
Thank you very much in advance, 73RM1N470R.
** just fyi, I figured I'd hard reset my phone and then update the Android to 4.3/4.4.2 which would help the hanging issue , and then root it. (not 100% sure about the ROMs..)

[Q]PLEASE HELP! Looking for a better ROM for Gsmart T2 (TUKU 2)

Hi guys, I've purchased a used Gsmart TUKU 2 and am having big problems with it. It has quite impressive specs for a very low price, so I was hoping to get a bargain, but oh was I mistaken. The phone either has too little memory (512mb apparently is not enough for this one), or the ROM is tragically badly optimized. I runs Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich (Kernel 3.0.21-perf; Build number: [email protected]) and it lags ALL the time. When a dual core machine lags on the home screen, something's wrong. I am trying to find a rooting/flashing guide for this phone, so I can try some better optimized ROMs on this to see, if I can improve responsiveness. I had big success doing this on my old HTC Dream (G1) when I installed a higher version (Froyo), so I'm hoping something like this will be possible here too, with an upgraded version like Jelly Bean, or KitKat.
The problem is I cannot find a single guide aimed at this particular phone and I can't find any suitable ROMs either. So please, mighty warriors of XDA-DEV, if anyone would know anything about this, have any relevant links or information, I would appreciate it dearly. This phone is supposed to be a present for my dad, as he needs a new one and I'm hoping to get it to work nicely within the next three weeks, so I can give it to him already optimized. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
So I have found something, but I'm not sure, whether it's the right thing I found this website: http://proshivku.ru/gigabyte/gigabyte-gsmart-tuku-t2-black-detail that seems to offer various ROM versions for many phones. It does list Jelly Bean and KitKat and it appears to have them available for the T2 as well. But I'm not sure, whether this is just a generic version, or one optimized for the particular phones. As well, while I can translate the website from russian, I don't understand the video on it, so I don't know, whether it needs to be rooted/downgraded first or not and so on. Anyone able to provide some more info on this?
So I'm getting back to looking for stuff to do with the Tuku T2. Found mentions of other usable roms, like the Cherry MIUI or the J77 MIUI, but can't find ANY working download links. Has anyone seen a working link for any rom for this phone?
Ok, so I have finally been able to find som custom roms for the TUKU T2
Hi guys. I have finally, after hours and hours of sifting through forums, found what I was looking for. I found actually many viable custom roms for the Gsmart Tuku T2. Found them on a russian Forum called "4PDA.ru". It is in russian of course, so your best bet is to use Chrome browser and have it translated in english. It won't translate all, but enough to find and download all that you need. Right the first post in the topic has the whole list. There are many versions plus a generic one. I have downloaded a few and will be testing them gradually. The link is here: http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=471828 Right now I'm using the LolliMod_V2 with the update provided to 2.1. It is one of the first in the list and I have to say it works marvelously. I already have had root, done by framaroot and I'm using CWM recovery 6.0.1.2 I think. I did have problems using the SD card to flash as it can't mount, but from what I saw it seems it's because it's a small SD card. So I just simply copied the zip file to the internal storage and selected install zip from internal storage instead from sd card in the cwm recovery. Same way, after install, restarted phone, then again into recovery, installed the update to 2.1.
As said, it works perfectly, none of the freezing or slowdown happening, that was constant with the stock rom. The LolliMod is I think android 4.4.2, which is fine, as the stock was 4.0.4. It provides some nice options, a lot more settings, far better graphics and so on. I have noticed a few hickups, like the Volumes settings in the sound settings won't show and the settings will close, but you can still set the volume for everything otherwise. It's a brilliant rom.
So anyway, if you are looking for ROMS for the TUKU T2, definitely have a look at that site. If you'll have problems with it, let me know, I can reupload some that I have already downloaded to some file sharing site...
As always, all credits go to the creators of these roms, none are mine, but as I don't speak russinan, I can't tell it to them personally. Take care.
