Adoptive storage on Marshmallow - Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

Hello, as can be seen for the numerous threads, marshmallow has been released for the M4 aqua. To many peoples disappointment the update did not contain adoptive storage. I have found a method on MoDaCo which details how to do this on the galaxy S7 and S7 edge (Source http://www.modaco.com/news/android/...e-adoptable-storage-on-your-s7-s7-edge-r1632/) and i have found out this works on some marshmallow phones. I have had success with this on my dad's LG K8 and my own M4 Aqua. Here I will go through the main steps but also look through the post on MoDaCo.
Requirement:
M4 Aqua with Marshmallow firmware (Tested on E2303 but have heard of success on others) with USB debugging enabled
SD Card (High speed recommended if going to be used for apps since if on slower SD's can be known to crash and run slowly)
I RECOMMEND USING A 16GB ON 50/50 LOOK IN ADVICE
ADB tools
DISCLAIMER - I take no responsibility for any problems with SD card not functioning properly or loss of data after doing this tutorial, I did not come up with this workaround and everyone should check the linked post to MoCaDo to see what the person thinks since I'm just going through the tutorial as well and thought I should let the community know
1. Back up any important files on your SD Card since they will be formatted and re-partitioned.
2. Enable developer settings and turn on Debug over USB
3. Set up your ADB tools on the PC side and open a command window in the adb file.
4. Type "adb devices" and confirm your phone is connected and is recognised in the program
5. Now type "adb shell" and then "sm list-disks" Now it will tell you the ID for your SD connected in your phone. This will look like "disk:179,130" This number could be bigger or smaller but will be two sets of numbers separated by either a comma or a colon
6. Now it's time to partition the disk. This can be configured in a number of ways.
Apply the comand you want replacing diskid with the number shown in the part above, including the comma or colon
-If you want your USB to be fully adopted type "sm partition disk:diskid private" ( I've heard some issues about this way) Have heard this doesn't work well so not recommended
-If you want partially adopted type "sm partition disk:diskid mixed 50" This splits the USB 50/50 If you want more adopted storage, decrease the number. ( Seems to work best as 50/50) The number is the percentage that is not Adoptive so for 30% adoptive you would put 70
-If you want to reformat the card to be non adopted type "sm partition disk:diskid public"
Do not just reformat the card on the phone software if you want to make it back into standard storage. I have had problems doing this since it said in the post it was fine but did not work for me.
If you go onto the phone, you'll now see your new adopted storage. As the method is not the proper way to do it, The total space and available space and space used may look a bit weird with outrageous numbers.
Advice:
- I was having some problems before after flashing the update myself. I ended up having to format my card on my PC and repairing the phone through companion and it seems to be working much better.
- Also I don't know if this really matters but i first installed all the updates for the sony stock stuff before partitioning the SD card.
After following these extra steps i've installed a ton of apps with no warning about low storage.
-Don't allocate more than 8GB to adoptive storage since it doesn't seem to really work well. This may be because there is a 16 GB version of the M4 so just thinks that is just normal storage. I tried this with a 32GB on 50/50 and this totally mucked up. So I recommend using 16 GB on 50/50
Edit: Now looking at my storage, the numbers for the storage don't seem outrageous and seem like they could be accurate.

It may be because it is looking for an Sd on standard mode but cannot. I think the best way to go while doing this is going mixed 50/50 or 75/50. For me, Spotify didn't see the adoptive partition so I could't save my music to it, i had to save it to my SD that wasn't adoptive

Done the mixed one (20/80), now camera works fine. It's the best solution.

One problem
Hi, I used this method and all good. But just let me go applications that previously could partially move, only now fully. Other applications no. I have mixed 50/50. Any solution? Sorry for my english, thanks!

I think that only apps that can move to sd card can be moved to the adoptive partition

Hey there,
tried the method as well, but I got a weird problem. The device storage is negative and given in "B" i.e. "-15045169152,00 B". The cards and storage below are shown properly. I live in Germany and got the Update via PC Companion. I retried the procedure with a fomated sd card with equal results.
Can someone tell me how the phone should behave during typing the commands in adb (I use minimal adb 1.4). Does it restart on its own? (Should it have been done in fastboot?!)
Best,
Fabian

Thanks for the quick reply! But that is more than a weird number right? Not even in GB. Should it restart automatically after the partitioning?
Edit: I got the 85% storage message also after installing a few apps...

I used the mixed 50 routine. Its a 64GB Samsung Pro. Which adb tool did you use? Perhaps there are differences?

Should i buy UHS-3 Class 10 card or what is the optimal card speed for this ?

I would recommend a high speed SD Card. My dad is using a slower normal SD card and it doesn't seem to work very well, apps are slow and crash.

I wouldn't go that far. I'm using a sandisk ultra 16GB which is a cat 10. I think they should be sufficient. any card that says microsd HC or something like that should be fine
Edit: This motorola page is really good to look at https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/109134/p/1449,9582

so I want to share my experience with you guys, I partitioned my sd card like this: %60 SD card, %40 adoptive storage. I have a sd card with 95r/90w speeds and when I installed A1 SD bench in my internal storage, it shows these results: (accurate with reboot)
both SD and adoptive storage: read 40, write 45 MBs
internal: read 100, write 20-25 MBs
I would say app opening speeds are normal and apps don't crash. I can't move all apps to adoptive storage, so that's a bummer
I am currently waiting for someone to find a way to root so that I can keep using link2sd as usual

[Q] sd card problem

Hi,
I got my Optimus one not long ago and I bought kingston 8G for it though it would work fine. The phone read the card well and show the memory correct and I can use it pretty good on my phone. The thing later I found out is the phone itself restart after the idle time exceed 1hr which is crazy. The phone works really good until I upgrade my original sd card (samsung 2G which came in with) to Kingston microsd 8G. I don't know where exactly is wrong, and I couldn't return the sd card either since it work fine on both phone and on computer with card reader. If someone got same problem with me, please let me know or help me out!! Thanks in advance.
I think it is a firmware problem,Mine and others do the same with the standart 2G card...
Firmware keeps updating itself when I go on WIFI connection. I don't know about these stuffs either. But now, the problems are ended..the phone doesn't read any card anymore whether 2G or 8G, it keeps saying that "sd card removed. Insert a new one". I've tried restart again & again but the message doesn't go away and my phone decide not to recognize the card. Both of the cards work fine on computer. I think I need to visit the shop where I bought to check on it. Btw, is that problem considered in the warranty case? I don't know.. It wasn't even a month with me. So sad!

Are you using any app2sd ? If yes, it could be a problem also if ur using an app storing data on your SD card. It makes you're cell restart.
I have the "mount / unmount" problem on my LG, I saw on a french forum that it was better to try with another file system, sometimes it was solving, sometimes not. I don't think it's really a card problem, I gave my LG GW620's sd to my girlfrend and her old samsung is using it without any problem's, but on mine it was crashing every 30mins....

I have the same problem but more problem when my LG O1 didn't recognize the card and I couldn't mount or format the card on my phone.
This happened when I partitioned the card. My PC still sees the card well but my phone doesn't.
I read a lot of posts from a lot of forums and I did try every guides steps by steps but it seemed as the LG O1 doesn't have any button-press-combination as others. For ex: when I pressed Back + Power On, nothing happened as It was said that the phone might come to FastBoot.
As help on this issue will be in much appreciated.
I fixed it. If your PC still recognizes the sd card, it's ok. Go to Manage (right click on My Computer) -> Device Management -> Storage -> you should see your card there. Try to delete volumn or format the EXT2 and Linux Swap.
Put the card back to your phone. It should recognize the card and then, unmount and format card and mount it back. Done.
I have a small question. What is the best class for this phone? The class 10 is fully used by phone or does not reach that read/write speed? Some micro sd class 10 are declared between 20 and 30 MB/S. The p500 has these capabilities? Or a Class 6 card is enough?
Thanks
UP!
The price for 32GB class 6 is very different from class 10.
Lg Optimus One is able to full use write/read speed of class 10?
Thanks
Help! I inserted a sandisk 4gb class 4 and my phone didn't recognized it (i got the 'SD card removed. Insert a new one.' notification). Then, i inserted back the original 2gb sd card from the box, but that notification is still there and it can't be recognized. But both my PC and a another android device (a galaxy tab) can detect it. So, i tried formatting both the 4gb and the original 2gb with the galaxy tab and inserted it to my O1 but nothing has changed. I tried updating to the official V10E firmware but it makes no diffrences. Any help please?

For future, don't remove SD card during phone is running because of app moved to SD card. Especially when you plan insert new one, and if you do that with custom ROM with app2sd its equivalent to suicide.
Is mass storage mode works? Is MS works in curstom recovery? Did you try format memory card in phone? Delete of caches?

Thx for the reply,
I haven't install a custom ROM yet. All i did was enable JIT+HW accel from a thread here.
1. Mass storage didn't work. It just appears as a new drive which i can't access.
2. I updated my O1 to V10E... I lost root, custom recovery,etc. so i can't try that
3. I formated it with another android device (a galaxy tab)
4. How do you delete the caches???? Sorry, new here
You had got me. For now I have not idea how to proceed.
Anyway, remove battery, remove SD card, clean sd card with some soft cloth, check if metal contacts looks fine (try clean that if not), insert SD card, insert battery and try it again.
If this not help, you can try some shaking and so on. It's sounds crazy, but I know one guy whose shaking helped him to flash firmware to phone, which not works at all. Maybe it's some cheats for all these issues.
ad 4) You can delete caches via custom recovery, but related to 2) you can't so, this hint is useless.
I did everything u said. I checked the SD card & the slot and they seem ok.
This might sound dumb, but what do you mean by 'shaking'? Which part are you suppose to shake?? Sorry, im still new to androids
BTW, i went to the LG customer care. The technician checked it and said that they are going to replace the SD card slot. She said that sparepart (the SD card slot) is going to arrive sometime in mid-January due to the holidays.
By the shake I mean grab phone and do quick movements with phone from left to right and back.
But it seems, that you have some trouble with hardware part(s) of phone.

[Q] Slow pc-to-phone usb transfer speed when using aokp

Hi there everybody
I recently upgraded my phone to ICS aokp, more accurately, omega 3.0 rom and my usb transfer speeds from pc to phone have decreased drastically. I have an 32gb SDHC card class 10 that use to give me 10mb/s average speed transfer with GB and now it won't get over 4mb/s, if lucky. As for the internal memory, it won't get over 2mb/s and it used to be around 10mb/s as well. Transfers on the other way around (phone-to-pc) are better than ever, over 15mb/s.
Hope somebody knows a reason for this, a solution or a workaround.
Cheers
A quick look at the ROM page shows that the ROM has a mod called RemountSD. This stops you from being able to use mass storage to transfer files, only MTP works - this could be the source of your speed issues.
try to change the usb-cable

Nah, I've already tried that and it makes no difference. With or without applying RemoundSD, using MTP or Mass storage, trying other apps such as Dual mount SD ( I read somewhere that it worked as a workaround) and also changing the USB cable for a new one, the outcome is always the same, the pc-to-phone usb transfer speed won't go over 4mb/s when it used to be always 10mb/s.
Any other ideas of what could it be?
On CM9, I've got this too. On Mass Storage is insanely slow, but swiching to MTP will increase like 150% the speed.

Well, now it is going at about a third of the speed it was supposed to, I've tried switching to MTP too, also unmounting the SD or mounting it with the app that comes along with the rom, and the only thing I've got out of it is that the computer doesn't recognise the SD on its own, it opens the phone with the both main directories, internal storage and sd card, but the sd card appears to be wrong and won't open. In order to get to it, I have to open the internal storage, navigate to the external_sd folder and open it. Now, via this way I can get to it, but either way, the usb transfer speed is still about a third of what it used to be on GB, 4mb/s, never higher.

Try erasing the external sdcard on the Settings/Storage, maybe it's the file system error. But backup all your ext sdcard data, of course.

Nope, I doesn't work either, just tried that and my card won't even appear in settings/storage, its space is blank. Even though it doesn't seem to be there, it is and it works perfectly for everything in every other app, the only problem is that it doesn't write as fast as it should. In any case, I took it out and formate it all the same and put it back, etc, it is still the same.
Thanks for trying though
just saw the new omega rom 4.0 (AOKP built.37). I'm gonna give it a try and let you know if there is any difference.
I still find hard to believe that among all the people that has installed CM9/AOSP/AOKP roms, nobody seems to know any solution for this problem, talk about this problem or even try to give a possible solution/workaround for it.
Well, I'll keep trying since I really like everything else about the rom
Nah, I did install Omega 4.0 and it did improve the speed initially, but soon after that, after installing google apps, titanium backup and some other apps it gets slow again. I've tried different installation order just to check if it was any special app but it seems there is no link, at some point it just starts going that slow.
Working finally over MTP
Hi there again,
Well, I tried upgrading to v4.0, and before installing all the apps and personalising the rom, it worked, both on mass storage and MTP, the speed was around and over 10mb/s. However, after putting all my stuff together, it went back down again to 3.5-4mb/s.
Now, I read somewhere else that somehow my USB drivers could be in some kind of conflict with something else so I downloaded the last version and installed it and now it is working, only on MTP, but it goes up to 10mb/s again.
Thanks for your time again guys and your effort.
Cheers
I am having slow transfer speeds to the phone too, I tried reformatting my card and I still get slow speeds I dont eve reach 4mb only 1-2 mb and I am using a samsung class 10 card. But pulling items from the memory card to the pc is faster. I tried hydra ROM and RR Rom both give me slow usb transfer speeds.
im even experiencing speeds in regions of only 500 kb/s when im trying to transfer to my external card (class 6). but when im copying sth to my internal one it speeds up as always. is this the same with yours?
it seems to be the only way to change to mtp. but then im getting sometimes some weird errors when transferring to both cards.
im on slim ics.

I have the same problem. I am on Resurrection 1.8 right now, which is also aokp based. I have little understanding of 'mod'-s so I cannot tell if I suffer from the very same problem. Another problem is that in mass-storage-mode I can see only the internal memory, not the external.
So... 2 questions:
1. If the problem is the 'mod'... how can we fix it?
2. The common 'solution' for getting access to the external sdcard in mass-storage-mode is an apk called 'multi mount sdcard', but that doesn't work for me (don't know why...). Any other solution?
greetz & thanks in advance, FourthRock

Adoptable Storage by PaulOBrien

I came across this link and tried it my self with a 200gb sdcard. My oh my im glad someone found this. Not my work nor do I take credit for it.

http://www.modaco.com/news/android/...e-adoptable-storage-on-your-s7-s7-edge-r1632/
Will this process effect ability to receive otas etc?
Not sure but it doesnt touch any of the software. It just expand the sdcard to the internal storage
Important comment by VoxLuna:
"This is a great find, except people need to be aware of the downsides to SD cards, at least*as a place for apps to reside.
If I'm understanding your writeup correctly,*this will probably*install all future apps to SD by default**And as you state, it*will always be slower than the internal memory -- on my G4, it's*something like 20MB/s on SD vs 50MB/s*on internal, so a LOT slower.**It's also going to stress your card*if you have a lot of caching or other intense activity going on (load balancing or not). *I have a rigorous backup system, but I don't need to tempt fate....
That being said, I DO want to have internal and external memory appear as a single*drive, while keeping apps in*/data/data instead of going*to any /storage. This*way, you can always find stuff, no matter where an app decides to store its files (camera apps, for example), as well as only having one filesystem you need to back up."

I think I read somewhere of partitioning the micro SD card and being able to have one partition as internal adoptable storage, and keep the other partition as normal SD card. So in theory if you did this on a 200gb card you'd have 100gb internal and 100gb external storage.

Had the exact same thing happen with my 64 gig card.
Adoptable storage has its pros and cons.
SD cards are incredibly slower than the UFS 2.0 speeds that Samsung uses internally.
Having both mix would actually hinder the performance rather than help.
I usually just move the apps that can be moved to the external SD card. Any app with widgets can't be used as widgets if they're on the ext SD card. However, using Android 6.0, it's a little more time consuming moving apps to the SD card. I prefer the way it was setup originally, go to settings, applications, scroll over to SD card and just click the button. If an app couldn't be moved, it wouldn't be listed.
I've only had my phone for a couple of days, and I haven't even had enough time to go through all the additional features. I have tested the waterproofing by filming a video while going down a waterslide. However, when filming a video, it shuts down the second it's under water. You can feel the phone vibrate for a second as soon as it touches the water. Somehow, the phone can detect when it comes in contact with water, which sucks because I wanted to try filming under water.

i cant get this to work i've done exactly as it says get to the partition line in the steps and it goes to the $ pronpt but my sd is still portable storage instead of private, i did the new 599mb update tho . do ya think that may have affected it?
I tried this method, and nothing happens... when I type "sm partition disk:179,0 private", I immediately get a new line to start typing. It just doesn't work... When I check my phone it still shows up as a regular external sd card with no changes...
The same thing happens to me. The command line pops up again like it didn't take. Though it worked on my old s7. What can I do to correct it?
Go to settings about and check are you on PG1 firmware. if you are use odin to downgrade to the firmware version below PG1. After you downgrade then the commands to enable adoptable storage. After its enabled then start the update to update to PG1. This will allow you to have the adoptable storage on PG1 and future updates just dont wipe data or you'll have to downgrade enable adoptable storage then update again.. @Peanuttree @HOrobOD

Thank you very much! I will try that now. Is the second to last update G935ACUS2APF2 ?
This is the firmware I used:

IT WORKED!
Thanks again BaconSeeds!

Does the downgrade wipe the phone or is the user data retained?

micro SD question

I thought LG wasn't going to allow portable storage ?
I put my card in and it didn't make me format and it shows as portable storage.
The G5 does allow portable storage (obviously with the SD card slot). However, it does not support Marshmallow's "Adoptable Storage" (i.e. formatting the card as if it were more permanent, internal storage). I found this perplexing too, but perhaps it will support this with later updates, or we'll be able to use it with custom ROMs if the root work comes through.
More information on the difference here.
You can enable adoptable storage now using adb. Several guides on xda now on how to do this.

Can you link me to anything showing this working specifically for the G5? The only adb method I've seen is the one for the S7, and it results in storage being incorrectly displayed.

Follow one of those guys and you'll be set. I did it with a fast 64GB card and I've had no issues.

Those are instructions. In the context of my question, I'm referring to a screenshot or other such proof after the process showing storage displaying correctly on the device.
I have not done it yet. I did see some of those screenshots with incorrect sizes being displayed however. Maybe ask in that thread about it?
Hey guys, purchased the LG G5 (Singapore) and realised that the internal and sd storage seem to be having a strange issue, when i delete files, i dont immediately get my space back, if at all sometimes. it turns up as unusable space called system data when using DiskUsage. Restarting/ejecting works sometimes, but more often than not it doesnt work. I have tried factory resets and 3 different micro sd cards from samsung sandisk and toshiba. any ideas?

Format Micro SD to Internal Storage

Can't seem to find this information anywhere. If this has already been discussed elsewhere, please forgive me. I would love to be able to format the micro sd card in my LG V30 so it is recognized as additional internal storage. I understand that the read/write speeds won't be as efficient as the actual internal storage and that the performance/responsiveness of the device may suffer. Not a concern for me. Also, not interested in any alternative solutions. Please no comments to the tune of "just use the sd card as portable storage and move files as necessary". Only interested in formatting the card as internal storage. Thanks!
If you have the SD card already mounted:
Settings > Storage
Click the little icon next to your SD card which should open a file manager. Click on 3 dot menu at upper right and select "Storage Settings" and you should find what you need.
If the card isn't already mounted, you should get the "internal" option the first time you mount the card.
This is based on my H932 running custom Havoc Pie ROM so you're mileage may vary.

Sorry, should have mentioned this in the first post, I have tried this already. The option to format as internal storage is not there. Also should mention that I have tried the above both as a VS996 and US998. No luck either way.
If you preformat the card to something the phone should recognize, then the option should appear. Maybe exFat? Do you have another card you can test with to make sure this is good?

This did not work, either.

test another card then! Your testing is a bit ambiguous unless we know what steps you took.
Something I'd try is "cleaning" the card in Windows (using diskpart), then exiting without any further preparation and inserting it into the phone.
Not sure if Android can initialize a completely empty disk, but I'd think that would get rid of anything that might predispose the phone to forcing it as external-only. Probably.
According to:
androidpit.com/how-to-format-microsd-cards-as-internal-storage (Sorry, this is my first post here so I don't have hyperlink functionality unlocked)
LG, and other manufacturers hide the functionality that others here suggest. I have not yet tested it, and the guide refers to Android 6.0, but it has some good detail on the subject. If I have success with this I'll follow up. I'm running Android 9.0 on an LG V30.
I got this working on my v30, running stock pie (root)
use of adb debugging, commands are;
adb shell
sm set-force-adoptable on
sm list-disks
sm partition disk:xx,xx mixed 0 (xx,xx is what disks number that shows from the previous command)
-wait til complete-
sm list-volumes (to verify it is now shown as private)
Doing the command "adb sm partition disks:xx,xx private" is suppose to work, but i've never had it work for me, but mixed 0 works just the same. I am getting an issue of it showing that i have 500gbs from the SD card, even tho i actually have 256gbs, but it still works.
