How likely do you think it is that root will be achieved for the Note 7? Which variants do you think it will be achieved for?
Personally, I'm hoping for a legit root method, but I won't be holding my breath since I expect Samsung to follow the same path they did with the US models of the S7.

Most likely Samsung will do the same as with the s7. International or exynos version will get root and snapdragon US ones will be locked down, sadly. But I also hope that Samsung listens to the people and decides not to lock the bootloaders after all.

They will lock down the bootloader in the U.S. Version 100%. Carriers pay big money for Samsung to lock the bootloader which prevents tethering and deleting bloatware which companies make a lot off. They also want to force you to use their apps... Root is not likely especially since the engroot kernel was leaked, Samsung will create to policies to ensure that doesn't happen again

If you get out of the relatively small group of people who root and run custom roms, what Samsung is doing is a good thing. The are providing a secure device which you need especially with things like Samsung Pay. I know most people here including myself don't like it but I understand it. There are so many people rooting and installing custom roms that have NO clue what they are doing it is crazy. I couldn't hardly stand following the custom rom threads with all of the same stupid questions and issues repeated over and over again. Everyone has to start somewhere but people don't even read the OP anymore it seems like.
I highly doubt it will be easy to root the carrier variant of the Galaxy Note 7. Similar to what they did with the S7.
I'll have TWRP up a few hours after someone mentions an OSRC kernel release to me, which should hopefully happen on August 2nd. (or 22nd? I'm not sure what the real release date will be but release date is the one they release sources on)
From there you can feel free to flash SuperSU 2.76 (or newer if available by then, but not older!) and enjoy day 1 root just as the S7/S7 edge did. (I think?)
This will only be for the F/FD/G/K/L/S/(hopefully W8) Exynos 8893 variants however.
I will be waiting for test users with these models to hit up the #twrp IRC channel to run builds and confirm everything is ok if I don't already have the N930W8 model on hand. I couldnt see bloat as a huge reason to lock the devices since basically everything can be disabled without root.
I figure its a matter of Samsung pay, if you cannot flash unauthorized software you cannot trip knox and leaves more devices samsung pay capable and thus making more money for Samsung through transactions and using their market saturation to push out android and apple pay.
Guys if I purchase the international version will my carrier be able to denied conectiin? I never done this before. I am still using the note 3

Canada has always been unlocked so im assuming this one will be too. Ill wait a few days before picking mine up. Saw one today at the local Bell store and its gorgeous and fast!
I'm betting all US variants will be locked...wouldn't even surprise me to see them all be the same variant...gsm/cdma matters not, the variants all have access to the radios...

My feelings as well. Hoping there will be a similar solution as the S7/S7Edge
Since the processor is the same on the US version as the US S7, wouldn't the Engboot method work for the Note 7 as well?

one of the reasons I ask to start a bounty for the note 3 (AT&T and Verizon)
Is because I ganked my phone with the NC4 OTA - like a stupid stupid person. I had NC2 on the note 3, liked the option to swing back to 4.3, yet the other day odined my way out of choice -
so in speaking to verizon, who flatly outright refused to do anything about getting 4.3 back - they wont do it...
this upsets me greatly, and figure is some developer was willing to go the distance, take one for the crowd, and figure out how to achieve unlock of the boot loader, then that'd solve a lot of problems -
or whack the white / black list - whatever prevents the NC4 from being overwritten... and so it goes..
but, be that as it may - I think as consumers we should have the following rights.
1. to completely have the freedom to do what we want with a device - i.e. phone / tablet - and not let the carriers / manufacturers run a game against us.
Owning a PC always, always has given us the freedom to do with it what we want, anything, it's an open book, you want windows, linux, etc, it's yours... you can do anything, even build your own OS etc, with no worries about trashing your hardware...
the same should be for a phone / communication device -
I could give a rats butt if a carrier propagates a device as a means to sell services, locking it down and preventing a consumer from modifying a device should be made illegal - i could go on...
but that's why I think it's worth it to offer a bounty for matters such as these -
besides, if someone cracks the bootloader of the Note 3, they've most likely done it for the S5 etc - or close to it; it paves the way for the next gen of hacks etc...

Beans put out a method that, after using towelroot to root NC4, is supposed to achieve NC2-like results. Look for it in the development thread.
You might be able to get back to where you want to be, but I'm not sure if you can downgrade, too. I think the SELinux permissive and the kernel modules were the only features mentioned.

Though I cannot flash the NC2 tar directly, did the following:
1. extracted "ALL_VZW_N900VVRUCNC2_N900VVZWCNC2_1014200_REV03_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar" using 7zip
2. downloaded a utility that took all the img files within the "ALL_VZW_N900VVRUCNC2_N900VVZWCNC2_1014200_REV03_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT" folder and created individual flashable tars ("boot.tar.md5", "modem.tar.md5", "NON-HLOS.tar.md5", and "recovery.tar.md5")
3. flashed the tars to my device using odin -
4. flashed "nc2kernel.tar.md5" using odin - #beanstown106 file
results - well, all flashed no problem, upon reboot, baseband reads "N900VVRUCNC2" - not sure if that is the modem but all seems to run perfect...
what did I do, anything? I was on nc4 previously.
Someone should update the past with details on how much the bounty is total and each person who is buying a beer

That's not Samsung's doing. Nexus updates are handled by Google and the carrier.

I am in the final stages of coming out with a apk called PERMA root. It will root while also giving you the option to unlock bootloader. I am testing on two more devices before release. I want to leave nobody unhappy. Therefore any device you may have will work. As new phones are introduced it will only take a couple days to activate from my end. He was claiming root and bootloader unlock. But instead of getting everyone riled up he probably should have made it a covert job and then "Bam" here you go. Kinda like when the Rezound got s-off. But the thread got way out of control and it's locked now until he can prove he has something substantial. While I love the xda community and have been along time member and highly appreciative of the devs.

I feel the same way about my galaxy bloat 3. First and formost i need a phone that works as a phone. This phone has the worst service and software out of any phone i've owned. As far as the sortware goes i thought i would be able to fix it with cm11 but thanks to verizon and me not doing my home work a head of time i'm stuck with the ****tiest phone i've ever owned. I can't wait for july to replace it with a motorola product.
I must be getting old. I don't see a problem with the stock note 3 and the bloat. Yeah the signal could be better but that is on Samsung more than Verizon. And yes Verizon could shorten the approval process for updates and Samsung could drop tw and put out updates in line with the nexus line as all manufactures should the ui should be a app on the app store and be little more than a launcher for people to choose to use if they want.
Not going to happen. If your on big red you likely don't have a choice or it is the best service in your area or your grandfathered into unlimited. The Samsung phones were the only ones with 2 features I am unable to give up battery that is removable and sd card.

If this phone doesn't end up with Lollipop that's rootable or an unlocked bootloader before February, I'm throwing mine at my Verizon Rep's face and picking up a Note 4. We bought Note 3's for only two reasons. The first reason was that the other Note's were easy to root and flash to CM and the second reason was because of the S-Pen. At this point I would take a loss on the S-Pen functionality just to be rid of all of the Samsung Bloat on my phones.
Wow. sounds like you all should be buying an international variant. trashing you phone or going to a N4 with a locked bootloader is not going to solve your problem. I am pleased with my Rooted N3 and have no issues and will stay with Samsung for a while. Root is nice but it's not going to cause me to put my phone in the trash, there are other things in life that are far more important

I see both sides, though we didn't have ten or fifteen roms to flash, this phone was not a waste at all. It's a solid phone for my use. But flashing roms has become a hobby and I don't like not doing that either. So even though most of the developers are going to the Nexus. I just don't like having no SD or removable battery either. And how are they handling any replacements for a phone currently not carried by Big Red? May not be the place for me to ask that but I'm curious.
You might want to check out the Note 4 forum for scripts that can disable a ton of the bloatware without root. I am still rocking rooted MJE so I can't test it with kitkat. It supposedly will run on most android phones. Just wanted to mention a potential solution until root achieved.

So locked note 3 to a locked down note 4 when you are stuck with the options of motorola or sony for unlockable phones that are on verizon.
IF you really have to have CM 12 you are going to have to either make sure the phone you get at that time has an unlockable bl or is a nexus.
And as for the note 4 it is only a slight upgrade over the note 3 and both will someday get lollipop note 4 sooner than the note 3...

Its about time they gave the Note 2 the respect that it deserves in my opinion this phone is one of the best smartphones out there Im on 4.1.2 unlocked rooted with philz touch recovery running Alliance Rom build 30 with the lastest Agni kernel and the phone is super fast and kicks ass so Lollipop can easily be handled by this phone so Im happy to hear the good news

Unfortunately I like so many others who have the "retail" version of the Note 4, are waiting on devs to get root for us.
They have temp root but that's not root at all. It goes away with every reboot / shutdown of the phone...
Now if you do get the Note 4, never take OTA updates, and get the developer edition of the phone! It's expensive though.
All things considered I love the Note 4! My only gripes are root and the battery life on Lollipop. I can downgrade to KitKat to fix that but what's the use for temp root? Great phone tho a major improvement over the Note 2.

I moved on to the LG G3. Seriously beautiful phone, great specs, and fairly easy to root and with bumped kernels it's like having the bootloader unlocked (even if it's not). So yes you can have CM/AOSP ROMs on the G3 easily.
This totally sucks. The Note 2 is one of the best phones ever created. It's a total shame to stop updating it. No real replacement exists.
It seems that everything has pretty much gone dark in the development section (exception of HyperDrive).
Does anyone know of any other ports or ROMs for Safestrap users that are still being released or updated? What happened to kexec?
I like my s4 and with a few exceptions want to stay with it for a little while longer. At this point I've been on stock rooted for almost a year and my stability is suffering for some reason. I want to jump to a ROM but it's looking like there is a lot less support and new stuff comming out.

Sadly, once they locked the bootloader all bets were pretty much off...I've had my s4 since launch day and it was amazing, until they locked it down. Hyper drive is the only option pretty much. There are a few s5 ports but I don't find them to be very stable.

EchoeRom is pretty solid too
If stability is an issue, but you are happy with Stock+root. Why not try the normal fixes? Clear the cache, try to track down troublesome apps, backup valuable data and factory reset and so forth...

I feel you, man. I'm glad I could at least get root and all, but I still feel a bit screwed that they locked down the device I PAID them for.
It also sucks to see how GREAT the stuff for the non locked phones is. Sigh.
Pretty much came to a halt when nexus 6 was usable on Verizon. Why develope for a crippled phone if you don't have too.

You can buy one from Google or Motorola at full price and get it to work on Verizon with some Sim card swapping. Word is February 26 will be the Verizon in store release but who knows. If I didn't have unlimited data or another carrier besides att in my area I would leave Verizon.

Not addressed to me but my reasons were that I was noob at customizing. This is really my first smart phone and I've learned a lot in this time frame.
I can imagine the subsidy was the reason why most people bought this phone. I couldn't have dropped $600 on a phone at the time. Learned my lesson the hard way though.

Thanks for the support, and what's the main difference between a bounty and petition? (On XDA at least?) How will it do us better?

Okay, a bounty involves donations, which does seem more attractive to Samsung, but I'm not sure how to set up donation links, secure payment, etc.... If someone does and makes a thread, that'll be cool too.

It is hopeless- that is why I dumped my US model and bought international s7e. I have both s8 port and early oreo ROM on it.

I would I paid off my phone, but it's too much of a hassle for me to sell it and find a new one. I'm broke and still in school? I had an Exynos A5 2016 before this and definitely going for Exynos next time around

Signed. Doubtful, but hopeful. I don't know the rules around it but I feel like setting up a community bounty and seeing who would be willing to chip in might be a bit more effective. I feel like the Snap Note 8 community is pretty sizable to sum up enough of a bounty to attract some capable hackers to put some time in.
Signed I'm sure it won't matter but at least we tried right? Hopefully someone can eventually bust this thing wide open would be a nice phone to do whatever we want on it. MAN why did I go back to the AT&T route instead of international unlocked?

Later than sooner, i wont say it's impossible, but for sure damn near. It's about forums and private site's, (US) who will make it possible. I've been programming for a little over 20 years although a different kind, CNC programming. Ive taken apart many phones including the note 8. Making a custom removable back cover is easy but when it comes down to analyzing every part in the phones. G-code was my first programming language to ever learn but 20 years later ive come to understand many languages. I'm just one part of a large group of people, each with a different set of skills. If anyone know's how to read a blueprint or schematics, or have a knowledge of how qualcomm bootloaders work in general on the note 8 specifically. sorry if this not the right place to post, ive been aware of the forum for long, signed up when the s8 came out. I want to contribute, just never have thought saying thing here as i havnt seen anything about custom modifications so the physical parts.

So to be clear, a petition shows a desire by the community to change something. Even if you got 10,000 signatures. Thats a small small slice of the pie for Samsung.
Bounties are to give individuals that may have the know how to achieve a goal, some incentive to do so via monetary compensation. I highly doubt a company like samsung or any large publicly traded company would even acknowledge a bounty and Im sure there are some legal rules against doing so. Not to mention they stand to make more money from NOT unlocking the bootloader and compromising knox than they stand to make from a bounty on xda..
If this bootloader is to ever be unlocked it will be by a team of code breakers as it took a team of coders to create this bootloader I'm sure. The bounty has to be a lot higher. Maybe there's a way of hard wiring through the eeprom and recoding the bootloader. I knew someone who did that to recode the mileage on a new odometer without going to the car dealer but I guess that's rookie stuff compared to this.
only a bounty on XDA would even make it ever so slightly possible; some talented folks have tried since day 1 without success..
petition to Samsung? now THATS funny!
They could care less about any sort of petition to make their devices less secure..

I hope that the snapdragon variant does get an unlocked bootloader, but I would be extremely surprised if that ever happened. It is all completely under control of the US carriers as they are the driving force that causes the bootloader to remain locked. I originally had a Canadian SM-N950W and after being annoyed by how I couldn't do what I want with my own hardware that I shelled out a pretty penny for, I recently bought a SM-N950F from Amazon and sold the W. I think that's probably everyone's best way to go. Voting with your wallet is the only way to solve such problems. Although, since there is a large majority of users who have the snapdragon models who don't care to root, I don't see it making a huge difference in the long run.

Wallet is only way to vote unfortunately. Why would they ever unlock this when the note 4 is still locked? Eol phone and they don't unlock it, reason being then you wouldn't buy the new model. This will never happen, I'm sorry.
Note 8 killed my Samsung loyalty. All previous tv's phone etc. Never again.
