Standby drain - Moto Z Real Life Review

When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Moto Z's battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.

Pretty good

Lost 3% on standby during 8 hours through the night.

Now that I'm on nougat, I'm losing about 8% over a 7 hour period

Not all cores stay in deep sleep when the screen is off.
I am seeing about 50% at 652MHz and 50% Deep Sleep when the screen off. I am not sure if this is expected.
I am also losing about 1% / hour in standby with the latest Nougat Update.
I just got it so I can't compare before & after.

1 percent per hour can be completely normal depending on someone's setup, apps install, signal strength, etc.
Most phones I've ever owned are about that or just under. Only my Nexus 7 2012 was way lower. About 0.4% per hour.
1 percent per hour is definitely not anything to be too concerned with honestly.
I'd start with CPU spy or a similar app, to see if your phone is actually in deep sleep when not used. If not, then you could have an issue.

i am extremely satisfied with stock(everything stock unrooted,locked bl) standby drain. I don't use Approach, Attentive Display and Notification Display in Moto app.
Wifi ON : 3% over 7 hours sleep
Wifi OFF : 1% over 6 hours sleep
Data(3G) ON : 7% over 5 hours sleep

Since N7 update, getting very bad idle drain.
Losing 28% during 7 Hrs overnight (>4%/Hr) and the BBS logs don't show any major issues.
Posting my logs here hoping a fresh pair of eyes can locate any anomalies I missed.

You might have bad reception in the place you have your phone. Check settings>battery> click on graph>cellular network signal. If the bar is red/ orange or has many small red lines you might be located between two towers.
Try switching to 3G or 2G overnight and if there is a dramatic difference it will confirm its signal-related battery drain.

Just an update; I used a Tasker profile to disable WiFi and Bluetooth when Display is off between 11 PM to 6 AM (my approx. sleep window). This has brought down the Idle consumption during night to 0.8%/Hr suggesting at-least one of them to be the reason for abnormal drain. I think the WiFi or Bluetooth modules in the Nougat update may not be fully optimised. I intend to test with only one of them turned OFF alternatively over next two nights and locate the real culprit.
Of course this does not help me during the day when both WiFi and Bluetooth have to be kept ON as I can't be bothered to turn them On/Off frequently whenever I start/stop listening to music or connect/disconnect to work WiFi. I'll explore if I can write Tasker profiles to switch them On/Off based on location, proximity to work WiFi AP and music steaming status.
Also, as suggested by @Vcek above, I can see some orange bars in the battery graph overnight indicating signal issues at my home location which may also be adding to the increased drain.
Overall I am sufficiently comfortable now knowing what is causing the increased drain and having at least some level of control over it.

I've been thinking about this as well in the first week of owning the phone. I leave out at 530am and get back around 6pm and am sitting around 50% (not bad, don't get me wrong). But the 2 year old phone it replaced would still be at ~40% in the same day.
It's better, don't get me wrong, just not as much as I figured.

Battery life without turning off wifi

I just got this recently and it seems like battery drains pretty quickly when the wifi is left on, for some reason the wifi connection stays on constantly unlike my Galaxy S2.
Is there any way to get wifi to sleep when the screen is off? Not that it's a big deal, but it seems like samsung should have thought about this so users don't have to constantly toggle wifi on and off.
Are you sure it's wifi that's doing it? I get barely 24 hours on standby with no apps running & sync switched off.
I've read that the chipset used isn't very efficient when in standby but the status reports on my 5.0 say that when in standby, 77% of the battery is being consumed by cell standby, despite the device having no cell functionality. Wifi is reported as consuming only 8%.
I've asked Samsung to comment & got a very helpful "return it to the retailer"...
I saw a recommendation for Juice Defender but haven't tried it yet.
The Battery Usage estimates for idle, standby, and wifi aren't always reliable - they assume Samsung got the powerprofile.xml right
For me - I know that wifi is significantly increasing my drain, but since it still lasts 4-5+ days of light use even with wifi always on, I don't mind.
This is for the 5.0 with the stock /system firmware and my kernel - 4.0 might be different due to a smaller battery. I see no Cell Standby usage reporting.
I've only had it a few days, but with wifi on, the battery lasts a bit more than 24 hrs just sitting there, I've turned off the wifi about half way through the battery and it seems to be draining at a slower pace now....
I'm also on stock Galaxy 5.0.
It's all very odd. We're getting around 24 hours & others are reporting 4-5 days.
I get 2 days to 5-10% almost everytime. Not much use, wifi on during day, off 10-12 hrs each night. Definitely not very efficient for such a large battery.
My 5.0 gives me great battery life listening to mp3's, the radio, podcasts and watching videos I've downloaded to the player.
However, downloading/surfing the internet drains it fast!. Much faster than I expected
I installed Juice Defender yesterday.
23 hours on I'm now getting a reported 85% of battery use consumed by the non-existent cell standby but the good news is that the battery icon is still showing full. Juice Defender in it's default "balanced" setting switches wifi off & on with the screen & it's reasonably quick to reconnect. Definitely worth a try.
Co-incidentally, I also heard back from Samsung this morning who are going to get their service centre to contact me. I'll report back on what they say.
Now on 66 hours with still a near full battery indicated so it looks like Juice Defender is the way to go.

Idle battery drain

What kinds of numbers are you seeing in the idle drain department? Last night, I left my SG3 off the charger and 7 hours later, I had lost 10%.
That might not sound bad, but it was connected to wifi and under similar circumstances, my HTC One X was only losing 3-4%.

From my subjective experience HTC phones are better at saving battery in Wifi.
However 3-4% is really low, are you sure it was Wifi always-on (not only on when screen on) and connected to the phone network?
Phone network alone should take like 5% in the 7 hours.

Yeah, it was definitely on Wifi the entire time. It was the Tegra 3 International version. I just assumed it was the companion core keeping the drain low.
That being said, the One X had serious issues. The e-mail app would periodically stop picking up exchange mail and the battery percentage would drop pretty drastically in the first few minutes I started using it again. It also had pretty crippled multitasking that prevented anything from running in the background for very long. All of these things could combine to indicate that it was really draining more than it was saying.
I suppose 10% isn't bad. My iPhone 4s loses around 7% overnight, but we're also talking about a 2100 mah battery vs 1400.

Battery Drain EXTREMEMLY Fast

Hey guys, I am having a problem with my Amaze, more specifically, the battery is dying absolutely WAY to quickly. For example, yesterday morning, after unplugging my fully charged phone, I dropped it straight into my pocket, and maybe looked at it twice the entire day. When I pull it it at the end of the day, the battery is red, with 8% left. If I were to be using it, the battery would last about 30 minutes on a full charge, most likely. I've also noticed that the phone is really hot, even in my pocket. If it helps, I am on ICS and have been using it since it was leaked in April, however, this problem is new (about 2 days ago is when it first started), as I usually get about 8-10 hours with moderate usage. Can you guys please help me? Thanks!
Well if it just started happening recently, and you haven't made any changes, then the battery may just be going bad... If that's the case, you can call HTC and they will send you one free replacement.

could be just the battery.. but if you don't mind me asking - how long have you owned the device? I suggest you dl JuiceDefender from the playstore and see if that helps - Definitely helps my device get through the day with moderate use and one time charge every 1 1/4 a day but this could vary on owners usage. Also, check your settings to conserve battery life such as turning off wifi, gps, auto syncs on your fb, gmail etc. and adjust your brightness to the lowest if possible and OH... less widgets and windows > less power that the battery consumes. Hope that helps!

Like I said, this just started happening. I didn't just decide to leave all my wifi and GPS and Bluetooth on all day. Also, to answer your question, I've had it since the beginning of the year. I think it's just the battery. I'll call HTC and report back.

Nope, battery life isn't that great with this phone, depending on how much you use your phone and what all you use it for you will get any where from 6-14 hrs + or - some. Also your Rom and kernel will make a difference..

This happens to me from time to time, and the phone is ALWAYS hot when this happens.
What I've come to discover that it's usually something that' activating the phone while asleep.
The phone is hot, because the processor is being used. That's why the battery is completely dead so quickly, something is pulling it out of deep sleep and causing it to run full bore. The key sign is the phone is hot.
I recommend you get an app that lets you see wakelocks, and what's keeping the phone awake etc (I use GSAM battery monitor) Whenever I notice my phone becoming hot for no apparent reason, I know for a FACT that my battery will be dead in a matter of hours. Lately it has been "Android System" that's the culprit, and I can't quite nail down what is doing it, but it's very random and not much of a problem because I do a reboot and things are back to normal.
First, try to reboot your phone. Get system tuner and see what processes are using the processor when the phone is hot (make sure you show ALL processes, even the default excluded ones). Check the wakelocks. Get battery monitor and check the mA usage (it keeps a running history). When my phone is running optimally, I have a mA drain of around 70-90mA when screen off/deep sleep, and it should maintain this type of drain... when my phone is becoming hot for no reason, I see numbers anywhere from 300-600mA drain for no apparent reason. A lot of the time there was an APP that was offending, so I would first check that. Like I said though lately it has been "Android System" and it's kind of hard to nail that down, but it's so random.
When my phone is cool to the touch most of the time, I know it's running optimally because it's achieving deep sleep. I've found a lot of it has to do with what you had running before you turn the screen off. A reboot ALWAYS fixes it for me. If you can't seem to nail down the offending app, do a full reset back to stock and you should notice that your phone runs very very cool when the screen is off and it's sleeping. I usually get anywhere from 24hrs-2 days of moderate use with the screen off governor set to conservative, and maximum clock for screen off ~600mHZ. I use interactive governor for screen on, but that's for responsiveness and you'll probably have better luck with ondemand for battery life. YOu can set these in System Tuner.
Just remember, if the phone is HOT, it's using energy. If it's hot, something, somewhere, is causing the processor to run at a high clock frequency. If the phone is HOT after being in your pocket/screen off for a good amount of time, something is definitely wrong/rogue app. The phone should never be hot returning from deep sleep. I bet if you check your default battery monitor (The android one) you'll notice that the bar for AWAKE is probably almost solid blue, something is preventing it from going into deep sleep. If I notice my phone is hot when I take it out of my pocket, I immediately know that something isn't right. This should NOT happen.

I'm just past my 9th day of using my Amaze 4G.... so far, if I turn off data and turn off autosync, my drain per hour goes below 1%/hour... so i could get >50 hour idle battery life + 4 hours screen usage
with data on and autosync off, maybe 2%/hour -> this translates to ~ 20hour idle battery life + 4 hour screen usage
with data on and autosync on, maybe 4%/hour -> 10 hour idle battery + 4 hour screen usage
I have only calendar widget on my home page, only Google Accounts on auto-sync (2 mail account, 1 contact, 1 calendar)....

what program do you use to measure battery drain? I use Battery Monitor Widget, but it's not giving me an accurate answer (lets say I had the phone on idle w/o data/sync... the available % is stable over 5 hours (~1% loss per hour), but the current usage says at least -100mAh)

I use battery monitor widget to measure drain.. as far as accuracy, I'm not sure? I don't know if it's EXACT but it seems to be a pretty good indicator of drain. When in deep sleep the phone usually measures anywhere from 70~mA-120mA. Usually it stays below 100. Before I changed the screen off governor / max freq (screen off) it was almost always 100+. Screen off governor is conservative with a max freq of ~600MHz.
I have no idea how exact it is, but when it's reporting ~300mA, my battery is definitely draining much faster.. and when it's reporting 500-900mA~ my battery is draining incredibly fast, so it at least seems to be a solid indicator of current usage.

On my previous phone (LG Optimus T / Optimus One/ P509, CM9 ICS ROM), Battery Monitor Widget reports more accurate readings (idle with data off= -2mA or -20mA<dont remember>, accurately representing that 1% of battery would last at least 2 hours)
Phone with the new kernel (KozmiK Ruby -0.5a) still goes battery drain crazy (even with Juice Defender installed now).... I hit 10%, then got fed up, turned off data... then the phone slowly sipped battery for the next 3 hours going down only 1%.... sigh
I think Facebook Messenger is the data hogger in my case, since I do use it often... will try a new ROM build without logging onto facebook messenger, see how it goes

What you said is true, at least for data on - autosync on. My battery last around 10 hours idle + 3.5 - 4 hours on screen usage. It seems that autosync eats a lot of battery. Will try to turn that monster off and see how much it will improve. I have bad habit to push refresh button on gmail/facebook widget, even with autosync on,
I used to get 14-16 hours. Now my battery won't last more than 6 hours. I gotta replace my Anker

Most recently I got 1 day and five hours with a fair amount of use by using faux 011 kernel and using CPU editor script to set it to battery saving profile. I'm at 45% right now with fairly heavy use after over 18 hours.
Battery life is totally under your control, it takes some work to get it where you want it.. but you also have the option of buying a bigger anker battery with external charger for $20 and carrying that spare battery, and simply not giving a damn.
Just saying, battery doesn't have to matter for a very small price and a little space to carry the spare battery in your pocket.

Cell standby battery usage

I'm experimenting a bit to see if the Omate TS would be a usable replacement for a phone (ie if it would work well during the day to read notifications, use for sports tracking, recieve calls and such).
It started out well - when I took the watch off charging in the morning I activated the phone, WiFi, bluetooth and paired my bt headset, and turned off cell data. I played around with the phone a bit (installed an app, played with that for a few minutes, checked settings and tried some new things there for maybe 10 minutes or so, and so on). I recieved two calls that lasted about 5 minutes each, and checked mails, facebook and such a few times. After lunch the battery showed 78% remaining, which sounded very good.
I decided to take a walk, so I turned off WiFi, enabled cellular data, and turned on GPS. Listened to podcasts through BT headset for the entire walk. One hour walk with RunKeeper, where I checked mail and facebook a few times during the walk.
After returning, the battery was down a lot, to about 25%, ie 50% battery drained in one hour. I checked the battery stats, and it looked like this: (not a link as I can't post links yet due to forum restrictions): imgur.com/WPQJNd4
I'm not surprised about WiFi and BT consumption as I had those enabled and used them quite a lot during the day, but what surprised me is the cell standby adding up to almost 50% of the battery usage, most of which seemed to be drained when I enabled cell data. Is GPS drain included in cell standby as well? Is this to be expected, or what's causing the excessive drain when using cell data connection? Any tips on how to improve this?
My cell coverage during the walk was decent, as I was outdoors and had at least 3-4 bars of reception the entire time.

I get about 2 days of battery with emails only, light apps use. 3g and wifi on, no bluetooth connected, zero calls.
8 calls, some messages, BT always on with headset, on 2G GSM, light app usage with brightness on min and i ended on 4th day still with 40%battery left.

That's quite impressive!
I tried again today, took watch of charger when leaving for work. 1 call, 10-15 minutes of "play" (installed an app, changed some settings, re-arranged some icons and such). BT with headset, WiFi and phone enabled all day, mobile data connection off. Recieved quite a few notifications during the day that I checked briefly, but other than that quite idle. When leaving the office at the end of the day I had 52% battery remaining.
Not too bad, but out of that the cell standby and phone idle together consumed half of my battery. Reception is ok, ranging from 2 bars to full (goes a bit up and down). I can't complain about the wifi / bt / screen battery drain, seems the phone standby is the only major battery hog for me.
Cell Standby is a battery hog for me too : about 10% an hour. Cell signal is good. Will try now to disable the mobile data to see if it helps.

That's amazing, what is your setup (hw revision, firmware, settings, etc)?
Disabling cell, wifi, bt, gps, lowest brightness on modified stock (the 2014 testing as a base, ensec, xposed) and I can just make it barely back home on 2nd day with light usage (check the time mostly).
In comparison, my Pebble gets to 30-40% on the 4th day and will die out completely by the 6th day.
Even though the cell standby seems to drain a ton of battery, overall it's acceptable. For normal usage (WiFi on, BT on, paired with headset, phone on, a few widgets and apps that are pulling info from the web, receiving a couple of notifications per hour, checking time/notifications a few times, making a few calls and such) I seem to average about 6-8% per hour. Half of that is for the cell standby, so turning the phone off would probably double my battery life.
I know there are a number of "battery saving apps" out there that modify settings and behavior to save power. Mostly stuff like turn wifi off when screen is off, enabling it once every few minutes to check notifications, and similar. Anyone know if these apps can tune the phone power consumption in any way?

I started running Deep Sleep Battery Saver as I had prior experience with it working well on an SII as a set it and forget application, where other similar programs require much more customisation. keep in mind my omate is not a daily driver, it spends half the week on the charger and the other half on my wrist, and I only use a sim card in their sparingly. as such, I don't have proper data, but I've definitely been able to make it through the day with light usage, occasionally forgetting to recharge until the next day
I think there may be something wrong with either the battery or the circuitry which monitors and reports on the status. I can watch an hour long video with negligable 4% battery loss one day, and another day a similar video draining over 20%.
Certainly with all the radios switched off and very light usage my TS was on 92% well into it's 2nd day...
However soon as you use it... it gets murdered.... lol....
From wednesday till now, few calls, bluetooth on, some texts, very light usage.

Still amazing! Which model hardware do you have? what rom? are you running any additional apps or just what's default? I'd love to replicate your setup on my 1/8 1900

Truesmart, EU 512-4 2100 working sensors firmware with patch, removed some bloatware, all auto sync off (manual), switched to 2G gsm only, brightness to min, bluetooth always on because crappy mic. Additional apps:facebook, my budget book, hangouts, es file, airdroid, quikpic, teamviewer...

The "Normal" Battery Life for Snapdragon

I have found so many people, like me getting at most 5 hours SOT with minimal use. People getting 6 to 8 hours said they disabled nothing and used the phone casually. I want to get to the bottom why some have amazing battery life while others have mediocre battery life. If you guys are willing to participate, I want a picture of your SOT with the apps you have used, what you have disabled/enabled, theme, and what software you are on. FYI, I am on the 3ARG7 build. I heard that battery life should increase with software update, I never saw this increase.
Battery life is very subjective. It's not just about what's disabled, but also what's installed, and more importantly, screen resolution / brightness.
I'd check your wake locks first. My s9 + uses like 2% per hour while the screen is off, with gos running for hiking

My screen resolution is FHD and auto brightness is set. I will try the wake lock to see how much it drains standby time.

If you have things like Facebook, Twitter, IM apps, etc, they can all wake up your device often, depending on the content you get. For me, I get 10+ emails a day from work, so I changed those to not wake up my device. Things like those can drain your device because it wakes up and takes time to go back into deep sleep.
Also check samsung calendar if you have it installed. There are reports in another thread of it causing wake locks
I've found cell and wifi hotspot signal strength have a material impact on SOT. Wifi being the better of the two. E.g. If I spend a whole day or two at home (which has good wifi coverage) I gained an extra 1-2 hrs of SOT.

Where I live I always have 5 bars so I dont think that this would be the problem for my case.
