Please help me get this thing upgraded - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Howdy,
So, I have a Toshiba AT200 tablet that uses android 4.0.3 and I'm disabled currently jumping through all the hoops for SSI. In the meantime I been using the usertesting app to make enough money to cover my rent & internet barely. Trouble is, they just discontinued support for android versions older than 5.0 so I need to upgrade it to android 5 or 6. Since I have no real clue how to do much of anything on android other than install and run stuff from the play store, I called Toshiba for help and was told that they don't offer a manufacturer update to higher android versions but that I could easily google an unofficial one that is completely legal.
Well, after the last 5 hours of trying, 3 system crashes, 21 removals of trojans by windows defender and malwarebytes, and I-have-no-idea how many 'surveys' & 'offers' completions trying to unlock downloads; I STILL don't have a working upgrade.
PLEASE help me! I need this done to continue earning enough money to pay my rent & internet.
Thanks,
Robert
that's a copy that I posted two weeks ago in the assist forums and never got a response till today telling me to put it here. I've done more searching since first posting, but still haven't found anything working (and ended up with some gomail.ru hijacker thing which I've tried repeatedly to remove but can't seem to fully get rid of it) so please help ASAP! two weeks is way too long to not make any income... I'm prolly gonna be late for internet this month.
Thanks,
Robert

Why won't anyone help me? Is it unclear what device it is? AT200 is what it lists in the 'about' section in the tablet settings menu, but what it shows up as when I put the serial number into the Toshiba website is Excite AT205-T16I

I still need help with this thing PLEASE! am I still asking in the wrong place?

As I know, the upgrade of androi up to your device. If It announce to upgrade, it means that you can do it. If not, you can't

What? I'm sorry but I don't understand what you tried to say. The Toshiba rep told me to google 'toshiba at200 custom rom lollipop' though I really don't know what that means... and I've tried multiple times but always end up with either a bunch of malware to get rid of or one of those 'complete survey or offer to unlock download' things which never work. I found a site with pretty understandable instructions on how to complete the upgrade and got some kinda rooting tool, but it doesn't help me without having this 'apk rom' that it talks about and doesn't give any links on the instruction page.

Regrettably, there aren't any options to update your device. There are 2 ways to upgrade, either via updates put out by the manufacturer, or via a custom version of android (referred to as a "rom") that is compiled from a source code such as the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) or CyanogenMod (CM). For devices that didn't sell well or weren't of significant interest to the developer community, custom updates aren't usually an option as it takes a considerable amount of time and skill to update a device beyond what the manufacturer puts out due to differences in the system as well as drivers on newer versions of android.

WM2005 etc. Newbie Questions

Hi,
I'm the proud owner of a T-Mobile MDA II with vga camera. Half an hour ago I happend to find this interesting forum.
What is this Windows Mobile 2005? I've never heard of it. I searched the Microsoft website, but I didn't find anything.
I have no idea which OS is installed on my MDA... the ROM version is 1.72.01GER (in case that helps).
So... in case I want to upgrade my MDA.... what do I have to do, where do I get the files from etc. And, what is this upgrade all about? Is it a totally new OS, or what is it? I have no idea
Thanks for your help
Bye

Hi Bauer,
I too am a newbee. Just joined this forum about a month ago. If I may give you a clue ( though I'm not an expert in it), the Windows Mobile 2005 is supposed to be the next mobile phone OS from Microsoft. It is said to have many more user-friendly features than the one you are currently using. However it has not yet been officialy released in the market (I even doubt if its ready yet). But thanks to our great Buzz Lightyear (http://buzzdev.net) we are fortunate to get the taste of the new promised features. Buzz had managed to create his own version of the said OS and named it the Magneto. Why don't you try to drill further into other area of this forum or go to http://buzzdev.net. I'm sure you'll get the idea, and as it happened to me I'm sure you'll like it too. Good Luck.
Hi again Bauer,
Regarding the question as to where to get ROM upgrade, you can try this link http://www.buzzdev.net/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=124&Itemid=32 to get the copy of the new ROM upgrade. However you are supposed to register yourself first to be able to access the link. There (and in this forum too) you will get a clear description & instruction for the ROM upgrade.
I would also like to get this opportunity to apologize to the forum (especially to Buzz and the development team) for not being polite enough to say 'thank you' for all the work you've done. I've had no significant problem with either the upgrading process or the tweaking around with both hardware and software (incl. 3rd parties). Everything works fine with my machine since day one I did the upgrade. I love the work. Thank you all, and have a nice day.
Hi Bauer,
Spend time reading the wiki site too which will provide you with a lot of background about your new toy and the sort of things you can tweak/ develop or pick up that others have done.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
Also learn to use the search function of this website as you can find most of the answers for yourself without relying upon good folk to give the same advice to the next newbee in the queue asking the same questions ('nuff said, we've all been newbees at sometime).
Once you've read relevant parts of the wiki and are comfortable that you want to risk changing your ROM (there are numerous pitfalls you risk (e.g. warrantee invalidation) and ultimately totally killing your machine if you have two left feet/ power surge/ massive bad luck etc) search these forums will educate you to the experiences of others developing/ beta testing/ exploring. Buzz's versions of WM5 are narrated a:

Remember to pay due homage to all his hard work.
Beyond that enjoy.

Blackberry Playbook! I need some serious help!

Hi there everyone,
I need some serious help with porting any FOSS Operating system viz debian to playbook. I tried to post franticly in crackberry forum, initial posts were cool. later when i started to throw too much info in hope of reply i got few replies or responses.
wish someone from here can help me. Because i am dead serious about porting debian to this device. its lovely.
thanks to RIM for screwing it up completely. i got fed up and decided to do the dirty job because to whoever i ask about a custom rom i got a depressing answer.
i am already ready to port. who else is helping me. or planning to help me.
please let me know. thanks.
-paul
p.s. i am a few steps away from getting the x-loader.bin signed, i got it signed with omap3, but i would like to sign it with omap4 and i am working on it. and secondly i got the source for the bsp from sonic foundary and i was successful in building it. but i need more help from users with more valueable output than "show me a different rom" or "thats too tragic, no one has been successful as of now." very few expressed their support. most of them seem to be waiting anxiously for BB10. sad. sigh! a few supporters are there and 2-3 folks gave extremely valueable information.
i hope to find some folks here who is willing to share the workload. and i shall try to co-operate my level best. thanks again for reading this post and wasting 10 mins of your life's time.
p.s. 2 i am planning to port coreboot the arm arch and debian, but this doesnt mean i will not try to help in the android process.
2 most valueable feedbacks which i got are,
nickstarmaster -> "For a OS that is specifically designed for a single kind of hardware, it got TOO MUCH exceptions/errors."
&
synerworks -> "Even if all the boot source code was released and built verbatim, without the correct signature it would not be seen as valid at launch. Without a JTAG, pushing your own firmware onto the device will not happen with the existing locked bootrom. Maybe if the bootrom had some unhandled exception that was exploited, an image can be generated to overwrite it but none exists to date. The only downside to attempting to clobber a soft-bricked Playbook is that it can potentially be rendered a doorstop if development tools can no longer manage further firmware updates. At least a bricked Playbook will be recoverable when a BB10 image is released by Blackberry whenever they get around to it. "
thats all the help i got with respect to porting. can anyone help me with the rest? team work? there i felt alone.

[Q] Help with a Chinese phone...?

Hello
First of all apologies if I am listing this new thread in the wrong place, I am fairly new to the forum!
Secondly, I have read that many people do not much like the Chinese phones, but I was looking for a decent spec, cheap phone for my 13 year old son, so that I would not care too much when he stands on it while playing sports at school, or it get 'misplaced'/lost/stolen by some other 13 year old, or if he simply abuses it to hell and so this iBOLD X-U 4.7" (1280x720) quad core phone just fitted the bill.
So I bought one and out of the box it looks and operates as expected, other than... the dreaded Chinese apps! Most of the apps are English/in English, but it has some in Chinese, one of which I believe is something to do with the rooting of the phone (does "com.mgyun.shua.su" mean anything to anyone?). I am also unable to find a custom ROM for it, or any instructions on how to get round to do this...
The main question is, how do I get to a UK/English only ROM/Software/Setup/Menus & Messages for this phone please, to at least get to Google store only apps? Am I asking too much and is this possible (on a Chinese phone) please? If I can flash it up from the 4.2.2 version it reports to be loaded with, to something like KitKat it would be brilliant!
Apologies for the relative inexperience, I do build normal PC's and write some code, just never not got round to changing anything on an Android phone (or worked with Linux type software!) as yet, so any help/advice welcome!
Many thanks
Assuming you are rooted and have a custom recovery, otherwise this is not possible via recovery.
If that's the case, extract your zip and make sure you install the proper DPI, all that is done automatically if you can flash a zip.
This is 5.0 gapps, KitKat linked in the op.

They don't have any newer official Samsung updates, but the developers here have been able to keep your device updated with custom versions of android that are based off of the Android Open Source Project and/or CyanogenMod sources. This means that if you update, you will get a vastly different user experience. You will have access to the Play Store and all the apps and what not, but the UI is completely different from the Settings, to the Dialer, Contacts app, email app, etc etc. Many people prefer this, but if you aren't tech savvy and new things confuse and/or frustrate you, then it can be an adventure. There might be small issues or work arounds that you might need to do depending on which custom option you choose and how you prefer or need to use your phone as well. I don't recommend jumping into the upgrade without reading other forum members advice or comments to see if there are issues that might affect the use of your phone. You can find more information in the forum for your phone here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-grand-duos -If you use the dual sim function, pay special attention to the changes in that set up with the newer versions.
I am going to ask for direction over there.
Thank you so much.

Introduction and Help unlocking Samsung Galaxy S model Bootloader

Hello everyone, I am ne to the site and forums for Android software development. I have always wanted to explore Linux OS systems and devices for quite a while but never seemed interesting and now I see that it is very valuable to know and understand. I consider myself a tech but mostly for PC, I hold an AS on Computer Electronics and current going for my BS for IT in Cyber Security and Linux pops up. I want to root my phone but it turns out that the bootloader is locked and I was wondering if I can get some help from you fellow experts. The phone is a Note 4 from ATT with android 5.1.1 installed. Is there any hope for me or can there be a solution. Thanks in advance....
Unfortunately, the chances of the bootloader getting unlocked is slim to none. The phone is close to 2 years old and no one has figured out. The people that might have the knowledge or motivation to figure it out have most likely moved on. They don't even have root yet, much less the bootloader being unlocked. For future reference, if you want to learn about modding android devices, stay away from VZW and AT&T phones. They specifically ask the manufacturers to make it more difficult to mod their phones. Sometimes there are ways around it, a lot of times there is not.
