Do USB B->C adaptors work? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

I'm thinking buying a G5, but am very reluctant to abandon my array of home and car chargers and OTG cables, which all have Micro USB cables, and spend a small fortune replacing them all with Type-C equivalents.
Are adapters available at a reasonable price which will allow old USB-B charging/data cables and OTG adapters to work with the G5?

I have a USB b to c dockin Station. It Works for charging and Data.

yep have one always in my wallet
used it for a long time at work since I did not want to carry all around the only usb type c cable I had that came with the phone
now got 3 more cables, but still keeping the adapter in the wallet for just in case situations

Do you remember where you bought your adapter? I suspect that all adapters are not created equal, so it would be useful to find one that's been tried and tested by a G5 user

got mine from a local store that does not ship outside of country
but I can suggest http://www.gearbest.com/iphone-cables-adapters/pp_288342.html?wid=21 as this one is a friend of mine using for his OnePlus 3 and also works for my G5

mini to micro USB adapter

I just received these a few days ago and they work great. I have purchased a motorola one and another ebay one last year but both of them when I plug into my Evo 4g or Ev3d I have to move it around to charge. These have longer and more solid micro connector and I don't have to move them around at all. I bought 10 of them and all 10 work great. The only thing I don't like over the previous ones is that it doesnt have a string or rubber band to tie it to an existing mini usb chargers or sync cables.

Any questions on them let me know.
Why even deal with these? Just get new micro usb cords from monoprice.

Because I have multiple AC chargers for my older phones that I can use at home and work to charge my Evo. Also being able to reuse my older car chargers is a plus. at $1 a pop it only makes sense to reuse those chargers rather than buying new ones. PLUS you can take the adapters out and it goes right back to a mini connector. Just in case you have other devices that still uses mini usb. Not everything is micro usb yet. And specially great if you have good quality chargers you can reuse than buy cheap chargers with cheap circuitry.
100% agree. Monoprice has these go on sale all the time for like $1 or $2 for a 3 pack so i buy them every time. I have tons of mini usb stuff from older phones, no need to buy all new chargers and you have the option of using it for multiple devices (mini/micro).
It also comes in really handy for PC's, i have a mini USB cable connected to my PC that just sits under my monitor for when i need to connect USB hard drives or any other sort of devices and then i just attach the micro adapter if i want to connect any micro devices.

Is the monoprice ones better? I know I bought a motorola one and a few ebay and some i think at daydeal but all of them the micro usb connectors were junk. Had a hard time keeping my phone charged up when I move it around.
I too have mini usb cables on all my pcs home and work along with wall chargers. You never know when you'll run out of battery power specially for us whos always flashing roms. lol.

confused about USB cable

it seems that some people on the forum say they have a standard micro USB connector on the Flyer??? and most of the ebay sellers list standard micro usb products for the HTC Flyer
MY connection is a proprietary one - it looks like a micro usb but has a 'step' in it
like this one...zoom in on the picture
http://www.expansys.com.au/htc-flyer-data-cable-dc-t500-extmicro-usb-12pin-white-209995/
wtf is going on?
Try it, you will like it, except for charging.............
try what? what will i like? what about the charging?
off the shelf micro usb works fine.
The proprietary style is only for charging
If u have a micro usb cable then u have to put it in the opposite way. Like this
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
It's a generic micro USB connection. The extra's is just that, extra. And not mandatory. I read somewhere (could be here, could be somewhere else) that they made the different connector so you wouldn't use the charger on a device that can't handle the power. But you can use any micro USB cable to connect the device to your PC. And you can even use any micro USB charger, but you'll need a lot of patience as it'll take a long, long time!
While you can use a standard micro USB cable, I have heard it would be better to use the HTC one because it will stay in better. I have used a standard one just fine, but the HTC one does hold in better IMO.

Its both proprietary AND standard. As vj092887 said, you insert the micro-USB male plug "upside-down" from how you would on most HTC devices. And it plugs into the "bottom half" of the jack. All this is in respect to the tablet laying flat, with the screen facing up.
If you use the included charger or sync cable, it takes up the "whole" jack. Sync doesn't really make a difference. But the included charger is much faster than standard HTC Micro-USB chargers.
jeebus on a swizzle stick, only after reading this did i actually shove a standard micro usb into it and i'll be damned.....
thanks guys

Shortly after I got my Flyer, I was at work and wanted to connect it to my laptop. And realized I had left my (HTC) cable at home, sticking in my PC there. I was also kind of disappointed as I had bought the flyer specifically because you could use a micro USB cable!
So, I thought, well, why not try it and see if it fits. And as I generally always first try to stick a cable in upside down (don't ask me why, even if I think about it, I'll try it upside down first ), I got lucky this time and found it fitted

i NEVER put in cables upside down (because i always put a little dot on the top side of the connector using nail polish...you can use liquid paper for a more 'manly' experience)
Is there a source for an innexpensive extra cable? I've been using a standard micro USB and it works but feels very loose compared to the official HTC cable that came with my flyer.

If you mean with a HTC style power connector, no, that's for charging only. For data cables Ebay or Amazon has them for about $1 each.

I wouldnt buy those generic cables from ebay/amazon etc they are poorly made and can either break off in your device, break off the connector on the device, or short out.. I highly recommend getting either Motorola or HTC OEM cables. They cost $2 - $5 but its worth it.

Does this mean that the MHL adapter with 5 pins will work (standard Micro USB), and I don't need the 12 pin MHL version (extMicro USB)?

yes! but apparently it charges really slowly so microUSB is best left to data transfer only

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. Although a standard micro USB connector works for me when transferring data I don't like how loose it seems in the Flyer's socket. So I want another cable just like the one that came with my Flyer, a micro ExtUSB cable. I've only found mini ExtUSB cables not micro ones, hence my request for an inexpensive cable source.

there are no inexpensive extUSB cables...i don't know where you are but try expansys or amazon in your country...they're all upwards of $20
There is no 3rd party source for the non-standard HTC proprietary connector.
HTC manufactured Windows Mobile and Android-based devices have a proprietary connector called HTC Micro ExtUSB (Extended USB). ExtUSB combines Micro-USB (with which it is backwards-compatible) with audio input as well as audio and video output in an 11-pin connector. The extra pins also allow for higher charging currents.
If you really want to spend on a high quality cable, here you go, the best, most expensive per foot USB micro cable in the world . For ~$25 this should keep your Flyer and small pets from bursting into flame............

By the way, all the generic or other brand MHL adapters work fine with the HTC for connection to HDMI.

MHL cable that will also charge?

Is there an MHL cable or converter out there that will also provide power to the Note 3? I've searched a bit on amazon and there are hundreds to choose from. Most of them don't indicate whether or not they do or don't.
I picked this one up. Its only a little more than a trickle charge though. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DZJSAVY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I don't often recommend official accessories, given how overpriced they tend to be, but for MHL I do think you're better off with the Samsung MHL adapter which does a full 2A charge when connected to a Samsung charger. You'll pay more, but you'll sidestep all the BS sellers selling subpar gear.
If you were talking about the MHL cable/adapter itself charging the phone without an external charging input, then the only way you can get that is if you are connecting to a TV that supports the MHL standard (relatively unlikely still).

Thanks for the advice. That's the kind of info I was looking for. I'm OK with spending more of it does what I want. I see a few different Samsung ones. Is there a specific one you have?
Also I do have a new onkyo receiver that has an mhl USB port. With this could I then bypass the extra charging cable?

Thanks I just picked one up from Amazon.
There is a thread out where someone mentions one on ebay for $11. It's more of an all-in-one solution. It's called HDMI connection kit. Of the person's suggestion I bought it and it works. It is hdmi, usb, & has an SD card slot. I just happened to be looking for the thread again when I ran into your post. Will post when I find it.

There are a couple of threads that mention this, one of them is mine. That accessory puts a fairly minimal charge into the phone, it will gradually discharge when connected to that even despite the charging input.
Haven't used it alot yet but it only works with the cable it came with when using the galaxy mega... I'll look into it on my note 3.

One Piece Micro USB MHL to HDMI converter/cable

Has anyone confirmed successful use of a One Piece Micro USB MHL to HDMI converter/cable other than the $40 Samsung OEM one? I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Pro and want to push video and audio to HDMI without carrying around three items (as is the case with this solution that seems to work per other posts: http://www.wowparts.com/mhl-to-hdmi...-1-2014-editin-notepro-12-2-tab-pro-8-4-10-1/).
Thanks!
I tried the Skiva unit (which is essentially a commodity - two red six-foot cables - one for power, one for micro-USB, to an HDMI connector, available under dozens of brand names) - no dice. Even the power connection was unreliable.
I have the multi-piece cheap kit with the angular dongle - also a cheap Chinese commodity and probably precisely what Wow is selling, but at several dollars less after shipping and with better Amazon return policies - coming in a few days and will report then.
I very much prefer the approach my Droid 4 takes, of a dedicated Micro-D HDMI output port. For all the great features of the Samsung SM-T320 (the 8.4" Tab Pro), this and the lack of OTG USB power are bizarre omissions.

The EEKit unit works perfectly. But it comes without directions and has about ten parts, of which you need really just three.
Plug the dongle into the TV, plug the tiny micro-USB to micro-USB SIII plug into the phone input, plug a micro-USB male to micro-USB male cable between that and the Samsung tablet. (Several cables are provided that would work.) Plug your charger into the other micro-USB plug on the dongle. It just works. With several parts left over.
One addendum; the EEEKit unit (and presumably the Wow clone) uses the charger to power the dongle, but doesn't seem to use it to power the tablet. The one-piece red unit (Skiva et al) does power the tablet via the cable... which would be more useful if it also worked for it's intended purpose.

And even more data... since I hadn't sent back the Skiva yet, I tried the S III connector that enabled the EEEKit to work on it. It looks like this unit (Amazon).
With it, the Skiva works. Although it didn't charge with this connected. Which implies that the problem is the Samsung isn't doing the standard outputs.
So the solution is either the full EEEKit set, or the one-piece red cable unit with the S III 5-to11 pin converter.
Bummer... don't want to carry around three pieces, but also don't want to spend $40. Hopefully someone will find a 3rd party one-piece that will work and post here...

Plug the pieces together, glue them with superglue, and it's one piece, still only $15.

USB C Chargers and Cables

Like all of you, I sit here waiting for my S8 to arrive. In the mean time I thought I would create a thread to post about USB C Chargers and Cables.
Like most of us, I have a bunch of Micro USB chargers and cables but no USB C units.
If you have any recommendations, post them here. Any ones to aovid, post here. I will update the OP as we go.

I've currently got a 6P. The charger cable in the box was type C to Type C, plus a very short A to C cable which stays in the car. I've had half a dozen cheap micro to C adapters over the past year. None of them supported fast charge or data. I ended up buying a couple of Type A to type C cables and an OTG adapter from ebay
I ordred these for now.

Has anybody had issues with USB-C cables and their S8 Active?
I bought several S8 and an S8 Active, along with some USB-C cables and a micro-USB to USB-C adapter. The cables work OK with the S8 but not with the S8 Active. However, the adapter works OK with both.
Could it be that the S8 Active's thicker case doesn't let the cable's male plug reach all the way into the port (I've cleaned the port)?
Comparing the length of the cable's male plug to that of the adapter, I see no noticeable difference but perhaps shaving off some of the plastic base might work.
I'd hate to pay for some high-end cables and find out they don't work either.
