Looking for a dual pane file manager - Chromebooks

I am new to the chrome OS,. I just got a asus flip. Overall I love it. I am looking for a dual pane file manager that will read and write to internal memory as well as the micro SD slot and any USB drives that may be attached. Any ideas?

Wellll, if you run chrome OS 53 on the asus flip, then you may be able to install/run "total commander" for android; it's free; can be set to dual pane in 'landscape"; & does write to micro SD but don't know about USB drives........

It does the same thing as xplorer or ghost file manager. It shows the internal memory but not the microSD card. Actually shows the internal memory multiple times. ChromeOS's file manager works but I have to cut N paste to move or copy files

On my Samsung Tab Pro, when I run total commander, I see "SD-card" which is internal memory; next line item is "USB", then "User-defined-location". "USB" IS the external sd-card; check the path shown which is /storage/(hex code?) & that is what shows up as the external sd card on my tablets.
I had played with the user-defined-location which, on the Tab Pro, which has something like SD-card,USB & when selected pops up to show both internal storage & sdcard1 to select which one I want to have it set(?).
So I'm not sure what you mean as internal memory shows up multiple times.
I have to wait until maybe late Sept to have my Samsung Chromebook 3 installed with the OS 53. I will be installing TC & some other stuff, but until then.......

it shows SD card, SD card (2), SD card (3), SD card (4) all are symbolic links to the same spot. The microSD is nowhere to be found.

I just open two instances of the stock file manager and place them side-by-side on the screen. I can drag-and-drop between them with no problem. All drives are accessible on the ChromeOS side. At this point (Sept 3), the Android side is something of a "walled garden". Some Android apps (e.g., VLC) can read from the SD card, but I'm not aware of any that can *write* to anything but internal memory.

I must be doing something wrong because when I try to open another instance it just pops the same instance to the top.

I have the shortcut pinned to the shelf. Click once to open the first instance, then two-finger click and select "new window" from the pop-up menu to launch the second.

Problem with computer recognizing internal memory

My computer will no longer mount my internal memory when I connect my Atrix to my PC. It recognizes the sd card, but not the internal memory. Does anyone know why this might have happened and how to correct it?
I had this problem but in reverse, when I installed cm7, my computer didn't recognize my sd card. Found out it was a drive mapping issue as the default drive letter was being used on my network. I solved this by right clicking on "my computer", then click "manage", then "disk management". Look in the window and find your device, you can identify it by the size. Right click on it and choose change drive letter. Make it something like K or L. It should then show up. Hope that works. You do have mass storage clicked on don't you?
Thanks for the response. I do have mass storage on when I try to connect to my PC. Im going to try what you suggested.
Thanks again.
I have a similar problem from time to time, my PC will only mount the external SD Card. Generally when this happens, it's because I have an app open that's got a file lock somewhere on the internal card (e.g. Root Explorer, Music Player, Samba File Sharing, a downloading file...). I use Go Launcher EX and select "Close All Programs" in the app panel, and this generally let's my computer mount the internal card right away.

Thanks for the hint, I had this problem before but was unable to figure out why...
EDIT: when this happens (PC unable to mount sd card or internal memory), I used to use "adb" to push files to phone instead... this is a workaround of the above issue, though it's somewhat cumbersome.

Why don't Android ICS apps detect my external SD card?

Hi guys I am new to android and I got myself a Micromax A110 running on android ics with 2 gb of internal SD card memory...
As you guys can figure, the internal memory just isn't enough for installing heavy games and storing and downloading large videos and music, so I added a 32 gb external micro SD card.. the card shows in my file manager and its contents are accessible, most apps like ttpod, ttorrent, vlc, chrome etc don't detect my external card. They only access the contents of my internal SD card, download to it.. I can't set the default directory to the external card...
When I installed nfs most wanted to my phone, it asked me to free up data in my SD card or insert another one as there was no space left due to obvious reasons of my internal SD card being filled with other apps.. I uninstalled and reinstalled it after setting the default storage location to the external storage... I found that the game installed in the internal storage this time and on startup, it gave the same message..
Is it a common problem or a limitation to the OS? Is there a work around for this? If so how? Does my phone needs to be rooted for the purpose? Please help as the problem is getting annoying.. my external card is lying almost empty...
Thanks in advance,
Extremely sorry for the long post...

It's because Google made the stupid decision, starting with Honeycomb (which is why the Motorola Xoom, the first Honeycomb device needed an update to enable use of it's MicroSD card slot) to merge the /data/ and /sdcard/ partitions. What that means is that the SD card becomes a virtual space (a folder, in fact) located in the same place where all your apps are stored. Why is it stupid? If you have a phone that actually has a MicroSD card slot, like yours or the Galaxy S III, the MicroSD card becomes a different "folder" (something like /sdext/, which stands for either extension or external). Only apps that specifically are programmed to look for that mount point/folder will be able to use it. Most music/video/picture players/viewers can, because it makes sense to automatically program to do that. But with large games, like you said, NFS Most Wanted (which I also have), it sucks because the game is like 2GB.
My Galaxy S3 has 16GB internal and a 32GB card. I'm forced to use the internal storage only for large games because they don't see the memory card. It sucks. The good thing about merging /data/ and /sdcard/ is that it simplifies things, like on the iPhone where your space is your space, no matter how you use it. It used to be that you had like 1GB or 2GB for apps (the APK files only, not the files that games download for example) (which the HTC One X does, but still only uses internal storage because there's no card slot), and the rest went to your MicroSD card slot. Now it's all to internal storage because your internal storage IS your MicroSD card slot at system level.

Hey man! Thanks for the reply....
Can you tell me how to work out a solution for this?
Is directory bind or fstab file hack the only solution?
Is it possible to overcome this without root?
And some apps do detect my Micro SD card... It is in the directory mnt/sdcard2

Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, A7 (2017) Adoptable strorage (use SD card as internal storage)

By default Samsung disabled the option to allow a user to use a microSD card as internal storage. This is very bad especially on devices that come with only 16 GB of internal storage.
Not happy? You can understand the gravity of the situation and complain to Samsung about this
:crying: HERE
Adoptable storage is a standard feature in Android Marshmallow but gets disabled by most manufacturers in their attempt of forcing users to throw more money on devices with more internal storage.
What are the changes with Adoptable Storage?
the SD card gets encrypted and encryption key is stored in internal device memory
the encryption makes the SD card read/write operation slower than otherwise
disables the normal use of SD card by swapping it in other devices (unless you select a percent of SD card to be kept as a removable partition)
can slow down the loading time of some apps, including installing them
some confusion is created in the device's total available memory reporting and memory usage reporting
In order to enable Adoptable storage you need to have custom recovery installed on your device. This will blow the e-fuse in the device, trip Knox, and you will loose warranty for the device.
Put the ZIP attached below on your SD card and flash it. This is an Add-on will make some changes to Android OS core to enable Adoptable Storage option, the one on which Samsung putted it's will to remove it.
The device will restart (if not you can restart it manually). Now you should remove the SD card, and delete the partitions from it on your PC (using an SD card reader or something) with the help of your favorite partitioning software.
This is to force the phone to ask you next time you insert the SD card, how to use it. Otherwise the option Use as internal storage may not appear.
In the new 2017 A series there is this new universal app for managing battery usage, disk usage, RAM usage and security.
Eventually you can find the option to migrate data to the SD card - this can take a while.
Basically it moves all the non-system applications from original internal storage to the new internal storage on the SD card. All new application that you will install will be placed entirely on this new internal storage.
Use another app like Storage Space from Google Play Store to see the real available memory, the universal Samsung manager is not designed to understand Adoptable storage as Samsung intended not to.
That's it. I tested this on A3 2017 (SM-A320FL) with Exynos CPU and ClockWork Mode custom recovery.
Download CWM Recovery for A3 2017 form this post. It should work on all A 2017 series on devices with Exynos CPU.
You can do this (flash a ZIP) using any working custom recovery compatible with your device (CWM, TWPR).
The applicability of this method may be limited to android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
From my experience on the Galaxy A3 2017 it seems that the new internal storage is equal in size to that of the SD card, so the new internal storage it is not adding to the ~9 GB of original internal storage left free - as I expect it.
The New Storage manager app is different from the usual access menu of standard Samsung settings. The menu we are looking for is hidden before the Format as portable storage option and there is no back button.
To make menu appear put the SD card into a computer and delete all the partitions on it.
1. Use MiniTool Partition Wizard on Windows or any other tool that let's you delete the partitions on the SD card
2. Place the SD card back in to the device
3. Go to the Storage Manager and select Storage options form top right
Now you should see the "corrupt" message under SD card. This is what we want.
To make the phone see the SD card as corrupt.
4. Now tap on that and hit Configure on the popup where it says ...in order to use it it has to be configured.
5. Done. Now you will see 2 options:
-Use as portable storage
-Use as internal storage
You can trigger the same menu by reformatting the SD card into the phone but before it finishes formatting tap quickly on the back button. This will actually interrupt the format, corrupt the SD card and then a notification will appear (A new SD card was detected):
Swipe down the notifications pane
There will be a cog icon and Configure. Tap on it to proceed
There it will open the menu with both options:
-Use as portable storage
-Use as internal storage
Please feel free to post your feedback and experiences regarding this below.
Special thanks to ashyx who updated this patch to work on these devices and other devices. More details and PayPal donation link here.

Yes. Some applications may not work normally or at all. However the phone will constantly notify you that the card is missing and to reinsert it.
Optionally you can choose to cancel that prompt but then you'll permanently lose the association with the SD card and you have to re-format it to use it.
not working for me I flashed the zip file, everything seems allright but even after formating the sd card, I don't have the option

You need a faster SD card (type UHS-I U3 or UHS-II U3 for faster access speeds).
As for reverting to portable storage just pop out the card then select "cancel association" from the phone.
Next time you insert the SD card it will say it is not recognizable and you can format it again either as portable storage or as internal storage
Root
when I want 2 root my device with A520FXXU1AQCA, but Odin - FAIL!
Download mode - Custom binary (RECOVERY) Blocked to remaining installment balance.

When I try to flash it with cwm. I get:

Thank you! It worked perfectly and in the first attempt. I did not even have to use a computer to format the SD card, or interrupt the process on the phone. I formatted it using the phone’s default formatting option and, once it was completed successfully, it asked me whether I wanted to use the SD card as internal storage. Smooth as can be. The only issue I can see is that it’s showing the total available storage as 64 GB, which means that the phone’s 16 GB is not being counted. I don’t really care enough about it to troubleshoot it. I am not using up 64 GB anytime soon.

How to transfer files from PC to SD card formated as adoptable (internal) storage?

I formatted SD card as internal storage (Android 6.0) and it is confusing...
I read that when the SD card is formatted as internal storage, it is also encrypted, so it can't be accessed trough windows for file transfer (if not rooted). OK, so I thought, there must be some practical way to transfer files such as books, movies, music, etc. from PC to SD card...
I tried to make some folder (for instance, BOOKS) on my tablets internal memory, transfer the files in that BOOKS folder, then move that BOOKS folder to SD card. But, I can't find the location of the SD card, so there is nowhere to move that BOOKS folder.
1) What is the SD card folder location, if there exists one?
2) Is there some practical way to transfer files from PC to SD card?
3) What does "Migrate data" option actually migrates, APK's, pictures, videos,...? And how does it decide what is suitable for migration, on what criteria?
4) Is there a way to pick which files would be transferred to SD card?
You correctly pointed out that the systems treats the SD card like internal storage. If your smartphone is running and you connect it via an usb cable to your pc, you will only see one folder. You can now copy something to your device and it is on your device. Basically, "SD card like internal storage" means that your internal storage has been extended by your SD card.
Simply said, there is only "one" storage. Your SD card ist now part of the internal storage. Usually, this is a great advantage as it takes away the limitations of a small internal storage.
However, the downside is:
- you must not take the SD card out of the phone and copy something. This will break the memory.
- you cannot pick what is stored where - Android decides this.
- you can only copy something to the pc via usb cable, bluetooth or network, you must not take the sd card out of the device.
The upside is:
You can stop worrying about where to copy what - Android decides this for you. So lean back and enjoy your new memory capabilities.

Thanks for the reply. I converted it to portable storage as I find it much more convenient. With adoptable storage, the biggest downside is, as you mentioned, that I can't pick to choose what can I store on my SD card. Dedicated SD card is not an issue, as I never (and a vast majority of users) wanted to pull it out of device.
Migrate data is a terrible option, almost no control, undefined behaviour. Generally, the way that Google engineers handled the adoptive storage option is amateurish.
Also, I noticed now, why did they remove the sort by size and sort by date filters in settings--->apps on Android 6.0???

Apps to SD

Hey guys, I just got this amazing phone/tablet/game console.
The 32GB internal storage is little bit not enough.
Is it possible to move Games or obb files to SD or even better format SD as internal storage?
Speed is not a problem i have 128GB UHS-3 SD card.
Thanks for any help.
You could try to format the sdcard as adoptable storage as described in this article. I am using ithis on my phone (which has Nougat 7.1.1) together with a 64GB card. 32GB as adoptable storage and 32GB as normal sdcard. But it should work on Oreo, too.
Thats what i want to do but it looks like the option is missing...
you need to do it by using adb on the command line later on it's mounted correctly automatically
Edit: I just tried it, unfortunately there are some permissions missing ...
Bought 128 Go scard for my 8.4 M5.
Can't find a way to move apps on sdcard or use adoptable storage...
It does not seem available.

There is a setting in Developer Options to force allow app installs to external storage. I'm sure there are also root apps for the purpose.
Of course, unless an app is really large or you are running real low on free space, you don't really want to install apps to an SD card.

I doubt that this setting allows to install apps to external SD card but allows only to store their data on SD card.

Yes, I can confirm that only the data is affected. I have activated "Force allow apps on external" in the developer options (third to last entry) and I have also set "Storage" -> "Default location" to "SD Card".
Nevertheless the apps I have then installed (Drastic -> not maovable my default, Deus Ex Go -> movable by default) both installed to the internal memory and only the data is moved.
This being said, for everyone with root and € 1,99 to spare I highly recommend Link2SD Plus. This app can not only move entire apps to the SD card, but also only the OBB-files (but only in the paid version). This reduces e.g. Lego Marvel Superheroes to a managable 12,97 MB in the internal memory and 1,84 GB on the SD card. Mission accomplished, IMO.
Though if you want to squeeze that additional 5 MB out and move everyting to the SD, Link2SD requires a separate partition on the card. So I rather stick with moving the OBB only.
One last remark regarding Adopted Storage: I have used that in 2 devices and it signifficantly reduced the life of both cards (Samsung EVO 64 GB). In the gaming tablet (NVIDIA Shield K1) the card stopped working after about 9 months, causing the tablet to reboot after a few minutes. Removing the card fixed this. In the phone (Sony Z5) the card lasted longer, about 13 months, but failed in a similar manner. And during all this other (and older) EVO cards I have bought for the family still perform well.
So I might have had bad luck or maybe I did something wrong but currently I can not recommend using Adopted Storage.

Oh so that's what the default storage thing does, I clicked on it thinking it would change the default save for in the future, but rather it deleted some game files (obb I think-no progress deleted). So I have to download it again, quite annoying as currently I have poor wifi, and the 1.5gb download would take well ages
Also the default location setting made VLC not see the difference between internal storage and sd card, it was like all merged together in "internal storage"
**edit**
Also it is a bit buggy, i downloaded an app with a hard-drive connected to the tablet through USB and it downloaded to that! I unplugged it and got loads of errors.
This a deal breaker for me so no adoptable storage?
Can anyone please recommend any other options for adoptable storage. I am rooted and have tried openkirin ROMs but none have support for adoptable storage. Have also tried some apps in the play store but none are working as intended. All I just want is to use an SD card as part of internal adoptable storage.
I need this as well, happy to install custom ROM if this is whats needed but would like to extend beyound the 32gb with a card
Solved in Developer Options
1. System
2. About tablet
3. Tap Build number until you get the message: You are now a developer
4. Go back to the System menu and tap Developer Options
5. Bottom of the menu, enable Force allow apps on external storage
All new apps will now be stored on the SD. Apps already installed cannot be migrated. These steps can be followed without root

No, this option *allows* to read/write data to SD independently whether they requested the permission or not. Unfortunately apps will be still installed on internal storage

I'm using this on my MediaPad M5 10 and it works. All my apps are being installed on the SD. This solution is based on practical experience not theory.
If you ensure the default storage location is set to external storage...
I realise I missed some steps. Here follows exactly what I did.
1. Factory reset
2. After initial setup, format the SD card
3. Go to Settings
3. Storage
4. Change the default storage to external
5. System
6. About tablet
7. Tap Build number until you get the message: You are now a developer
8. Go back to the System menu and tap Developer Options
9. Bottom of the menu, enable Force allow apps on external storage
All my apps now install on the SD. I use this tablet for gaming so the limited storage was a deal breaker for me until I did this.

Yep
? Many thanks buddy. I had actually sold of the tablet and now debating whether or not I should get one again as this was the reason I sold it off. Would you mind posting a screenshot of what your storage settings now looks like please with all apps now being installed on sd card. Is the sd card memory now part of overall system memory?

About 12GB is system data on the internal storage.
After installing 43 GB of apps (Games) my internal storage has 18GB and the SD Card has 37GB
