[TWRP][harpia] TWRP for Moto G Play - Moto G4 Play ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, & Other De

This is my version of TWRP built for the 2016 Moto G Play. It should work fine, but using it is a try at your own risk procedure. Your bootloader must be unlocked to use this recovery. Fastboot mode is used to flash or boot this recovery. To enter fastboot mode, turn off your device, hold PWR and VolDn for 3 seconds, then let go.
Differences between upstream TWRP and my fork:
My original green theme
No SuperSU
No TWRP app
No HTC Dumlock cruft
Updated pigz compressor (slightly faster and more tolerant of corruption)
To temporarily boot this recovery:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
To permanently flash it:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
The download is up on the downloads tab.

Thank you so much for your support. TWRP works perfectly. Although after installing SuperSU, the device doesn't boot. This happened to me on several other devices as well and I don't really understand why it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. Any help is appreciated
I even tried the latest beta 2.77 without success.

Good to know. Thanks again squid2! Quick question, how is the SOT of this device? A lot better than the Moto G3 I'm right?
Another thing: cam anyone use the aida64 app and find the camera Id (sensors) for the rear?

We can't unlock the bootloader

Will this work for the 1601 bell variant? I would think it should as it is a g4 play non Amazon version. At least o would have root till till custom Roms are available. Hey Squid2, great work so far. Is there a way I could send the code for the radio? Kinda of a noob with that aspect.

Ok so i went ahead and did the steps and we have success! xt1601 moto g play is rooted and ready to roll!

[TWRP][otus] Recovery for Moto E 3G (2015)

I've built a TWRP recovery for the 2015 Moto E 3G. This model is also known as Styx 3G, and has the codename otus.
3G model only! If you have the LTE model, use my LTE recovery instead.
Downloads are available on the downloads tab. In case you encounter any issues, I've also posted the stock recovery for otus on the downloads tab.
To try it out without flashing, run:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
To flash it:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Try at your own risk. I expect everything to work, but I make no guarantees.
I would like to thank cybojenix for creating the first-gen Moto E recovery. I used his device tree as a reference when creating mine.

My initial test release is up. Try it at your own risk, I don't know what works and what doesn't. All I know is that it can boot and see the on board storage. Thanks to @Ravx and @Hakkinukai for initial testing. If you want to stay safe, don't flash anything with it until I'm able to confirm that it works properly. I'm still waiting on my test unit to arrive.
For the adventurous, try it out and let me know what works and what doesn't. Be careful though, it's untested and could mess up your device. I'm not responsible for any problems it may cause you.

Further test results:
1.) Was able to succesfully backup my system with the recovery.
2.) wiping data gave error ( error code 255 i think ) but the data was still gone and the device got factory reset.
3.) Succesfully restored the data from the created backup.
will try to flash SuperSu now.:good::good:
Edit: The device is Successfuly rooted.
Here is the Screenshot of Successful Root.:good::good::good::good:
Bro i have created a saperate Guide for rooting. I hope you dont mind.
Glad to hear that it is mostly working. I'll look into the data wiping error when I get my test device.
Thank you very much squid
i try this command 'fastboot boot twrp-otus-2.8.6-test3.img'
and in first attempt , i got TEAMWIN screen on successful boot MOTO E 2nd Generation.
and from install option ,i install SuperSU from my internal memory.
and my device rooted successfully.
you are
:victory:
I've posted a new version (2.8.6-test4). This new version solves a problem that prevented my recovery from booting from flash storage. It's also smaller. Thanks to @Hakkinukai for testing.
You can safely flash this recovery to your device by doing
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-otus-2.8.6-test4.img
I make no promises about reliability, but I'd expect most things to work. Use this at your own risk, I'm not responsible for bricking your device. I haven't tested this myself.
To avoid confusion, I've removed the old version (2.8.6-test3) from the downloads tab.
Thank you very much, I could finally rooting my moto E,
#Off topic could please make a version updated for the moto E first generation, the current version is 2.7.1.0 and the latest versions have many bugs,

By booting manually, I presume you mean selecting it from the bootloader menu with the volume keys. What happens when you try that? I've had others report that it works.

Are you sure that you flashed it correctly? Is anyone else having this issue?

The utterly incompetent Canada Post decided to lose my Moto E 3G. Their customer service was very unhelpful and just told me to contact the sender, and ask them to start a trace with the USPS. Traces take 3 weeks and often get nowhere. This is the fifth package to me that Canada Post has lost in the past two years. On average, I've found that 1 in 5 packages sent to me via Canada Post get lost. That is quite ridiculous, but they are a taxpayer funded government monopoly with no sense of customer service.
In addition to contacting the sender, as a last resort, I've taped a notice inside my mailbox to ask the mailman/woman if they know what they did to my parcel. God knows if I'll ever get it.
Anyway, enough of a rant for now. I'm furious that they lost a package that I spent $200 on (with taxes, shipping, markup etc.)
Due to you, this tut was possible @ http://androidmtk.com/root-motorola-moto-e-3g-2015
Good news! My Moto E was delivered to the wrong address by Canada Post, but the people who received it brought it to me yesterday. I've started looking into porting CM12.1 to otus, though it will probably be a week or so before I have something to show.
I Find some bugs:
1) The USB-OTG don't work (don't mounts)
2) adb sideload don't work (don't finds device)
3) strong button vibration (the default is 80, but 20 is ideal)

[Q] XT1528-Verizon

General info:
There will be a lot of discussion, do not follow untested tuts in this thread. It could cause you to brick your phone into a Cool paperweight.
AS OF 9/1/2015
XT1528-Surnia_Verizon
Board- MSM8916
Bootloader-NOT UNLOCKABLE!- EVEN IF YOU GO THROUGH MOTO'S WEBSITE (Verizon Locked it, not moto. & verizon cant unlock it) Viewable by booting into recovery & reading the screen.
Android 5.0.2-armv7l-240 DPI
Updated to 5.1
200MHz-1.21GHz quad core-Qualcomm Snapdragon 400/410
Root- No Write/full access-Cant seem to uninstall system apps on Android 5.0?/5.1
Screenshot: Attached at bottom of KINGROOT APK(4.5) via One click root method working on my updated 5.1 lolipop xt1528.
KingRoot does not root your device, just allows for removal of pre installed software via kinguser. After uninstalling, it crashed my Google launcher app & was fixed via rebooting which caused my system to have to re-optimize all apps which took 5 minuets. Root access is denied. Autostart manager works
Unrootable, Locked bootloader, but excellent capability. I love 5.1 better. I wouldnt recommend this device for anonymous browsing (I like to use Tor as a VPN), torrenting, or sharing. But I love the battery (lasts all day without heavy gaming use), phone calls & txts, Browsing the web is good too. I love being able to take out my phone and say "Ok Google" to vocally search or open things (like cortana) and my phone talk back. As well as the easy-to Use feeling comes if you've expierienced 5.0 before, a little confusing if you've been stuck on <4.0.I feel comfortable with it & it fits in my pocket pretty well. I don't know how much radiation it throws off... I say 7/10 overall. No xposed, if your lucky to rebuild the APK & patch it you can do it.. 4g is awesome! & I'm happy I didn't go with a free phone. Although, i'll be getting one soon to play with.
Thank you, Thanks for reading, & Have a wonderful day! (ALL Useful info & credits to who said it will be added via a reserved spot below.)
LATEST Answers :SU-ME didnt work for me on 5.0, and even though KingRoot said i had root access, It wouldnt give it to anything or allow write access.... Also, I attempted to root 5.1 off the v4.1 apk. It said root strategy available-Gave me (nothing past words)root access-But caused a bunch of apps to continuously crash. (I'll try it again once i go through my dev settings, i also factory wiped it earlier). It said i could remove system apps, It couldnt though. I used the auto-start manager too (we'll see if that stuck). (pics below) Also, Anyone who provides any testing will get thanked & a name below.

Yep it is possible to root.
First download supersu.zip here-
https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU
Now install custom recovery on your device using adb and fastboot. (TWRP is preferred coz many reported cwn not working)
Once twrp is installed boot in recovery.
Then tap install and select the supersu.zip where u downloaded it.
Just flash it and tada!!
Reboot in system and your moto e with lollipop is rooted.
I rooted by same method.
#peace and hope it helped you.
The hardest part is unlocking the bootloader. Without that, it's impossible to root.
I wish I had seen this thread before I picked up this phone today. :/
As I did pick one up as something to play with and not necessarily just for custom roms, I'm not immediately returning it, but it's a strong possibility.

When I try installing twrp via fastboot I receive a preflash error. I have yet been able to boot into recovery., I just get a red triangle and "no command" . What am I doing incorrect?
I don't understand the recovery mode for this phone, I'm used to 4.0.4 lol. I'm not sure either. I thought I broke my system when I tried to adb flash twrp & found out you can't shut your phone off when its in recovery mode. (Also, you can't flash without unlocking the bootloader) DUH right?

You can't flash without an unlocked bootloader. The XT1528 isn't supported by Motorola for unlocking because its a Verizon phone. Verizon doesn't like giving out codes, and wouldn't even if you asked. I think unless someone can Dev the crap outta it, We're screwed XT1528 wise. But, I don't know much about anything lol. I'm still learning.

this is not possible on verizon version xt1528. bootloader is unlockable. will need an android 5 vulnerability to gain root which is the best the verizon version will ever get.
Most likely way to root this phone would be to use an app that has a Lollipop exploit, but they're getting harder according to this article:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...ew-modified-kernels-may-become-a-requirement/
Okay so now I have gone and picked up the AT&T XT 1527 version. I now have a XT 1528 I can test with. Question, should I go ahead and root the XT 1527? I am thinking about wiping everything off Verizon phone and installing Fedora on it, but if there are other suggesting, I now have a test sled that can be used. I am open to suggestions with the verizon phone, let me know what you all think.

Thanks for reporting root worked on your moto e, this is fairly new, Im waiting to see if others can repeat it, and whether it really does work. Have you tried some other apps that require root to see if they actually work with root?
For your specific /system/build.prop issue, some roms write that file from another location, /etc/build.prop or some other similar paths, so maybe need to find that file. Also you have to remount /system as read-write, assuming this worked otherwise there would be an error right away.
Usually I edit /system/build.prop files manually with terminal emulator app, then type these commands:
su (proper root needed)
mount -o rw,remount /system/build.prop
vi /system/build.prop ( may need to install busybox app)

Getting CM 12.1 on my SPG621

Hey Folks,
I am totally new to this but I want to put CM 12.1 on my SPG621. I have unlocked the bootloader so far and I was looking for hours for a step by step guide that is noob-safe.
There are many guides and tutorials that tell different things and it is very hard for me to get the essence of it.
What I understand is as follows:
- I have an unlocked bootloader (and lost my DRM Keys, good job)
- get root
- install custom recovery
- install CM 12.1
Is that the correct order? How do I do that in detail? I don't understand how to install a custom recovery without root and I don't understand how to get root.
I have downloaded Flashtool so far. I would be glad if I got any helpful advices. Thanks a lot!
These are what I did to have root and twrp:
1. Check what version you are on right now. If you are on 5.0.2, you can root it by using Kingroot 4.5 (here)
2. If not, you can download stock 5.0.2 from here and flash it via Flashtool; then you can install Kingroot 4.5 and get root
3. Turn on usb debugging and unlock the bootloader again as you have converted to stock
4. Install twrp - download from here
5. Download CM12.1 and Gapps and install via twrp here
Hope it helps!
Thanks for your quick answer.
I now obtained root access via Kingroot. I would like to install TWRP Recovery now. I downloaded it via PlayStore. I chose my device and tapped on Install Recovery.
It now asks me to confirm a partition /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/FOTAKernel else I would risk bricking the device. How can I make sure that this is the correct partition? I can't see this path in my file commander.
Cheers,
ArctiCMooN
Edit: Never mind, I didn't click on the link. I will install it with your link then and post the result here.

I have a few problems now that I try installing the dual recovery.
Root Checker says I successfully have rooted my device. BUT: I cannot find the KingUser App anywhere.
When I try to install TWRP via this dual recovery method, it asks me if I want to use SuperSU or SuperUser method, but I don't have anyone of the, is that correct?

Thanks a lot for the help.
I managed to get CM12.1 on my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet.
I basically did what Mocha7 told me, although I wasn't sure about KingRoot 4.5 (trustworthy or not?). I gave it a try, the first time it failed, the second time the root was successful.
I did not install SuperSU or SuperUser and directly continued with the installation of XZDualRecovery and chose SuperSU method in the Windows Command Terminal.
This worked perfectly and the tablet directly started into TWRP. From there I started the installation of CM 12.1.
After that, I did a factory reset of CM 12.1 to erase all data of the old system and reinstalled XZDualRecovery.
I downloaded the latest Gapps from CM Wiki and installed it via Recovery.
The system works fine and I am extremely happy that I got rid of Sony's Stock Android. There are some very small bugs in CM 12.1: Rebooting erases some shortcuts on the homescreen and the lowest brightness setting is still quite bright.
Thanks again for the help!

Sorry I was out of town for the labour day long weekend so I didn't see your replies.
So glad to hear that you nailed the CM 12.1! Enjoy!!:good::good:
Hi, Please report how is the condition of Cynogen mod 12.1, is it stable for daily use already?
wow, man! I read your post and think this is ME!! haha I just got my Z3 Tablet a few days ago and had the same struggle. I got it with 4.4.4 installed and jumped right to CM12.1. Also tried crDroid and like it actually much better^^ I got a big problem though. With these custom roms my camera would not focus! the back camera is useless. front is ok though. Have you anything like that??

Hi, CM 12.1 is quite stable but has a few bugs.
Restarting the device deletes most of my homescreen shortcuts.
The adaptive brightness options seems a little bit buggy. It switches brightness way too fast and too often, is not smooth, so I turned that off.
Besides that, I did not experience any further bugs.

Now there is a problem. I tried to update to a more recent nightly of CM 12.1. I did it via the settings menu and let everything happen.
Now I can't boot my device anymore nor can I boot into recovery. The device just tries to boot, shows the Sony symbol and then turns off and tries to boot again. So it is in a boot loop.
Can anybody help with this?
This happened to me a few times. Try to flash the recovery again and the flash the rom from there. If it works, good, if not....
It happened to last night when I tried the latest nightly. I could not do anything so I flashed the sony stock rom with flashtool. After that I could flash TWRP again. Not sure of any other way.
Yeah I had huge problems getting recovery on my device. I reinstalled stock 5.0.2, rooted it and tried to get the same dual recovery on it I used before, but it didn't work. So I downgraded to 4.4.4 and managed to get Custom Recovery on it and from there I managed to install CM 12.1 again. Now everything works fine, but my nerves need a rest now^^
glad it works. take a rest and enjoy haha
I have to wait some more or maybe even sell it because of the camera bug.... I don't like sony stock os ....

OnePlus updater

Not my app but a find in the play store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arjanvlek.oxygenupdater
Just used it to update from 5.5 to 5.6.
I wasn't being offered it from system update so I thought I'd try it.
Worked first time.
Update: oxygen 11 released for the UK / EU
Thanks
Thanks for the post, just updated this way.
For some reason there were no update available for mine I was stuck on 5.4 - > Now 5.6 via this updater.

Nice one. Good to know it's not just me
After getting tired of waiting for the OTA update to 10.5.11.IN11BA to arrive, I used the Oxygen Updater to do it myself.
However, after the update I noticed that in the System Update screen, the changelog that was previously available at the bottom (as a slide up) is now gone.
Is this behavior expected? Should I worry for something, e.g. not getting any future OTAs?

Actually the app identifies your model and will only provide updates for that model..
I mean that's my experiences of it.

No
New dev preview available for the EU version via the app.
Haven't taken the plunge as I need stability at the moment.
Anyone flashes it, please let me know how it goes
10.5.12 is now available for the EU version of the device..
Downloading now..
Edit:
Installed and working well.
Couldn't comment on battery yet but feature wise it's about the same.
Thanks for writing about the app here. I just installed 10.5.14 on my EU OP8 Pro and everything is working well. The "official" installer didn't show this Update.
Magisk and NoLimits are working well.

Yep absolutely, this app has been a god send to many, works with root albeit with an added process, beyond that's it's a spot on app.
Long may it last.
The official oxygen 11 update has rolled out for the UK / EU
Information as per oxygen updater.
Let the good times begin.
New update has arrived for the EU 2023
Will be updating and seeing if root, centre clock, xXx are affected..
Apparently canvas is now integrated too.
Does anyone have the OTA link for the new EU version?
Or the Stock boot.img ?
I downloaded it to my phone using the app, did a local update, before rebooting installed magisk beta to my inactive slot, and did a reboot.
Now its stuck while booting, and TWRP doesnt seem to boot either with fastboot boot twrp.img
Edit: Got it working again.
Does anyone have a working TWRP, the version i tried gave a Qualcomm Crashdump mode error. (Havent tried after it worked again).

Why did you install twrp on 11? Just install your patched magisk partition.
All you needed to do was take the update then without booting go to magisk and install after OTA

I tried to boot it, but didnt work.
But that was after i did the OTA from this app, and Magisk to the inactive slot.
Then a reboot and it didnt work, did not boot for some reason (Stuck on the red dot, with 2 white dots moving).
So then i tried the TWRP boot (No flash).
Maybe it was because of some Magisk modules (But it was just Smali and Recording enabler for OOS)
But its working again
But no option to boot TWRP so far when Android 11 is installed?
Thought it was OS independent.
Edit: patched and stock boot.img from Android 11 update from today (OnePlus8ProOxygen_15.E.31_OTA_0310_all_2011010124_d85208) for the OnePlus 8 Pro EU model.

How To Guide How I rooted my international (EU) Realme GT 5G

I couldn't find any simple instructions for rooting so hopefully this helps someone.
I'm assuming you've already unlocked your bootloader. If not, download the deep testing app (there are various apks on xda e.g. from here). Then submit the application (it took me a few minutes to get approved) then use the app to reboot into the bootloader, then run command fastboot flashing unlock. I don't believe the deep testing app works on android 12 yet so you may have to downgrade to android 11 to unlock your bootloader.
If your bootloader is unlocked you can update to android 12 (though it isn't necessary to root). If your gt isn't offering you the latest version you can download a recent version on this thread and then use "local install" in the update menu.
Next, download twrp from:
https://github.com/qiurigao/RMX2202
The latest version is twrp-3.6.0-V2.img
And download magisk from:
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases
The latest version is Magisk-v24.3.apk
Put your gt into fastboot mode by powering off, then hold the power and volume down buttons together until you're in the fastboot screen.
Then run command:
fastboot boot "twrp-3.6.0-V2.img"
Do NOT try installing twrp as I've read it can cause issues.
This should boot twrp (it will be in chinese but it doesn't matter).
Rename the magisk apk to a zip e.g. Magisk-v24.3.zip
Now run:
adb push Magisk-v24.3.zip /data/Magisk-v24.3.zip
Then:
adb shell "twrp install /data/Magisk-v24.3.zip"
Now you can adb reboot and you should be rooted!
Good luck.
Thank you so much this guide. i've successfully rooted my device. but how can i run the banking apps ? because magisk hide not working. thanks in advance.

Look in Magisk settings, enable Zygisk (beta), enable enforce denylist, add apps to the denylist then install universal safetynet fix module from github and reboot device.
Update: now we can use deep testing app to unlock bootloader while using Realme UI 3
Unlocking bootloader and rooting the device will format data?
Unlocking bootloader - yes
Thanks, this worked!
Also, really DO NOT install Magisk by clicking on "Install" in the TWRP interface, it can brick the device. Just don't touch the phone while installing Magisk, only use the fastboot and adb commands.

Yes, absolutely. It will work in Android 12 no matter how many updates you'll get. But will not work in Android 13.
Thanks man, it worked like a charm.

This method works with the Android 13 update.
Use the same twrp image (twrp-3.6.0-V2.img) but use the latest Magisk (25.2)
I did this with 2 devices and had no Problems with root. Had to reinstall the Magisk App afterwards though.
(FWIW I did not remove root before updating to Android 13, that doesn't seem to be a problem)
Hiiii, I'm thinking of buying this phone so I got 2 questions; 1) are there any custom roms available? From my little to none research, I've only found gsi, andd after my failed attempts, hearing the word gsi brings a bad taste, lol. Aanndd 2) is there any development/general discussion group about this device on telegram?

can you open the bootloader in a13? or you need to open it before update?
Hm, to unlock bootloader, you need the right deep testing apk for your system version. I haven't looked into if there exists one for Android 13, but I would just downgrade the phone to a patch that works. I think I unlocked mine by downgrading to stock, and then installing the latest system update that is still Android 11. Sounds like there is a working Android 12 too, but I haven't tested it. Having to downgrade doesn't really matter to me, because unlocking will wipe all user data anyway. (Of course if you find a deep testing apk that is meant for 13, you can also try that, I just don't know if one exists)
