I didn't think another phone this year could match or beat the Axon 7's audio.

Audio mumbo jumbo still confuses the heck out of me... so which phone is best here?

The only thing I know is that Axon 7 have an Amazing Sound (Speakers and Headphones) and for what it cost is just a bargain.

Audio levels high or low mean nothing if the audio produced sounds like ass. So far the Axon 7 has the best sounding audio of any phone I've heard.

I saw one review on youtube, actually a comparison between OP3 and Axon 7 audio. The guy said that OP3 is far better when using headphones with Atmos turned off on Axon, and that Axon is only better with Atmos turned on. Is that really true? Because I intended to use Atmos only with speakers.

Depend on how the reviewer is testing. Only the built-in music app can use the hardware DAC. Without that, the sound would be as good as any other Qualcomm s820 phone.
Download a flac audio file and compare the SQ using the stock Music player and any other player. The difference is pretty noticeable.

$400 phone vs $650+. The real bonus to me in audio is the front facing speakers, I'd rather have that than the better dac that the v20 has.

I've had the axon 7 since release, I have to disagree. I have the vmoda m100. Pretty. Nice set of headphones. Atmost, to my ears, makes the sound worse though headphones. It's taking an audio signal and altering it for surround sound. It's not bad per se, but it's better if you listen to music with it off while listening through headphones. With speakers, it's a different story. I turn atmos on when playing music through the speakers. Makes the sound fuller, slightly louder and more pleasant

I've read this before. I only use Spotify for music. Will I not be able to listen to music with the standalone dac?

I don't think it's true that only the built-in music app can use the DAC.
I've tried a couple of other basic music players (Clean Music, Pretty Good Music Player), and when I start a song, go into android Settings > Sounds & Vibration > Headset HiFi, and flip the switch back and forth, I can hear a difference in the audio quality (albeit a small one, I'm not an audiophile and am using a cheapo set of ear-covering headphones). I can also turn on the Dolby ATMOS feature and really hear an improvement.

Seeing the graph presented in the article, it suggests simply a bad measurement for the Axon 7 (as in an incorrect measurement). I don't see how those numbers can be accurate. Having said that, I'm not a sound engineer...
Any comments from more knowledgeable people here?

i ment op3 vs A7 in general, not Atmos. i personally dislike most sound "enhancers" but (P)EQs are dope AF.

No you will not and that's a good thing. The DAC should only be on when playing lossless format because it will drain your faster otherwise.

You would need FLAC files and a good set to tell the difference. It's not a big deal to be honest. People like to pretend they care about SQ but 95% are streaming music or using MP3 and having a DAC is pointless for those.

How do you transfer them from your computer to the phone? Dragging the flac file to my phone's SD makes a pop up saying the flac file isn't supported on the phone and would convert it to a supported file

True, but with a good dac, the streaming music and those mp3 are much better reconstructed (which is what a dac does), therefore, even low quality music has a tendency to sound better with a better dac

Typically a good DAC on a good system/headphones will show you how crappy lossy/low bitrate files really are.

[Q] Audio Quality Amaze/MT4G

Hey guys I've read some posts, reviews and watched some video samples of the Amaze and from what I can tell..it's true, the audio recording on this phone is horrible.
I wanted to ask if anyone from this forum could compare it to the MT4G?
That's the phone I am currently using now and want to know how does it measure up to the MT4G's audio recording when shooting video.
I ask because I record a lot of videos with my MT4G and it's important that the audio quality on the Amaze isn't less than my phone.
1080p would be awesome to have (mine has 720p) but I don't want to sacrifice audio quality.
So with that being said, could anyone tell me from personal experience whether it's worse or better when compared to MT4G?
Thanks a lot.
I would ask if you are so concerned for professional reasons and then I realized a pro would use a real camera...
Not trying to be a prick or anything. Just curious.
What is with the concern of how well the audio is recorded off your phones camera?

Because I don't own a point and shoot camera so I rely on my phone to do all the recording.
I have two kids, 5 and 4, and I record them all day, everyday.
So yeah I just don't want to sacrifice the audio quality for better video quality.
Cause if you have kids that young you should know the audio is the most important part!! They say some of the craziest things. Lol.
Anyway, thanks for asking though. I don't mind explaining. Do you have any thoughts here?

If you want good audio quality on a phone camcorder, you're not going to have any luck with HTC, put simply. The Amaze is a fantastic phone and video quality is among the best out there, but audio has never been HTCs strong point. If you're looking for great audio, I'd suggest looking into a Motorola device, though T-Mobile really doesnt support Moto anymore it seems. If you do go with Motorola, just know that video quality will not be the best on most, at least from what I've seen. The Razr looks solid on both fronts. Then there's the iPhone 4S, which undoubtedly has the best of both worlds. Either way, I'll stick with the Amaze. I love it in every way.

AWESOME!!!! Way better answer than anything I could think of. I definitely see where you are coming from. Audio would be very important.
Not that I have taken a lot of video with mine yet but I have to say it does not sound any better/worse than my iPhone's ever did. Video is a ****load better though

So it's not like a horrible difference yeah? Well that's good.
I mean my biggest thing was whether it'll be worse than my current phone.
myTouch 4G.
That's really what I'm trying to get at.
I don't have a problem with my phone's current audio recording.
I just don't want to be downgrading. =P

Thank you.

The audio quality is very good. But not stellar. Much depends on the source. If you use badly compressed mp3 files and cheap earbuds don't expect much. The phone can play .flac files if you install a 3rd party player like PowerAMP. That combined with a good set of headphones (I'm using Klipsch, which are also very good but not stellar) then the audio quality is more than adequate.

Why don't you take you're kids to a t-mobile and take some test videos too compare? Seems Luke that would be the easiest thing for you to do and you would not have to rely on any the opinion of someone else.

As far as recording, the audio is just as good as my vibrant...take that as you may--I am not a huge video guy. Plus, once you record, you can edit the audio on your pc.
PowerAmp is the single, most important app for me...in the car, at work, everywhere, the output is amazing.

Beats Audio
Do you know if Beats Audio will be in the Amaze anytime soon or in the dev posts?
audio seem ok to me...I had the SGS2 which only provides MONO audio, and audio quality seemed good . This phone provides mono and Stereo so I played around with it and when I put it on mono audio the sound quality is much better, but then again you get mono....So It might have something to do with the extra microphones trying to pick up extra sound and cutting out the background noise....Personally I feel the sound on the Amaze is much more clear with high treble, than the SGS2, is the only phone I can compare it to. sound on SGS2 was muffled a little. also the speakerphone on the back and front of the HTC device sound much less muffled than My SGS2, I have no experience with motrola or any other brank of phone.

I installed a app from the marketplace called Volume+, it was less than 2 dollars. But you can go to the dev website and download it for free. It boost up the volume from the audio playing from the loudspeaker and headset. I don't know if it will boost the recorded incoming audio. To me I had the MT4G rooted with a sense 3.0 Rom and I already love this amaze. As long as your hand doesn't block the microphones on the phone it is fine. Plus for 15 dollars you can buy the adapter to hook up to your tv and watch the glorious 1080p via HDMI. Also my Amaze is all stock. Plus the reception and call quality is very good.

This may seem odd but I found that, to me at least, it sounds better with the "stereo recording" off. That's how my MT4G videos sound.
Anyway, volume is not the problem here. It's sound quality.
I get the best recording with an app called rec forge, mono, wav and 22khz sample rate. The stereo recording does not improve the fidelity of the sound. I have yet to try an external Mic.

Beats Audio Control Panel?

Anyway to get something like this Beats control panel like on HP Beats laptops like mine here. Really Beats on my laptop sound way more amazing then Beats on our Rezound.
Agreed, that would be nice.
My Son's LT has that panel also.
Honestly, I can't stand to use the stock Music player due to being stuck with either the Beats or HTC "enhancement" both of which only ever sounds like a bit of reverb and bass boost added, by different degrees. On decent high-end 'phones it just sounds like garbage. I'd feel suckered by the hype if I didn't already expect it to be empty hype.
The Rezound, on the other hand, is awesome.
I couldn't actually care less about beats, I bought the phone because I liked it. I have never really used the integrated beats software, I always use PowerAmp which is so much more advanced than most other music players.

I like beats because in my car, until I finally upgrade my system, I get better sound through beats because it keeps the bass without the speakers giving out. Using my iPod I cannot listen to many songs as the speakers start to give out.

I agree, I didn't buy this phone at first because of the Beats gimmicks but once I saw the specs and the news of ics coming to it plus BJ's Wholesale had them on sale for $99, I had to get two.

If you install the app "headset button controller" you can regain all the functions of the 3 buttons.
The app works perfectly, I have about 30 different sets of earbuds/headphones & 99% of them are only "iphone compatible" so I use this app every single day.
I originally installed it to use with my Beats Studios & my Bose QC15's but I quickly realized it works with ANY headphone set.

This is definitely a matter of preference but I tried both Player Pro and Poweramp and I have found the sound is EXACTLY the same on both players. They both utilize the same 10 band EQ. Poweramp even gives you the option to turn on Beats, which I find to be unnecessary. In the end, the only difference is the UI - I had already purchased Poweramp so there was no need for Player Pro, but the sound, I found, was exactly the same after tweaking. I'm sticking with Poweramp

Interesting to compare the figures in that report with those from the 4S review.
Code:

Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III +0.03, -0.05 -90.3 90.3 0.012 0.018 -92.6
Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III +0.11, -0.04 -90.2 90.2 0.0092 0.090 -53.1
(headphones attached)
Code:
Test Frequency response Noise level Dynamic range THD IMD + Noise Stereo crosstalk
Apple iPhone 4S +0.02, -0.11 -91.2 91.2 0.0020 0.012 -93.0
Apple iPhone 4S +0.05, -0.10 -91.3 91.3 0.0068 0.071 -66.7

Those distortion figures for the iPhone look pretty spectacular to me, and I'm impressed that the GSIII manages to get better if you hook it up with headphones. But, being not a sound expert, do these figures mean that the iPhone is still the better bet for quality music reproduction?
By the way, before anyone flames me, I'm not planning to "downgrade" from my current Xperia X10 to an iPhone4S. (My SGSIII is already pre-ordered).
Second question I'm going to throw out there - is it worth looking around the Play Store for a copy of WinAmp or similar - or do we think that the bundled Samsung music player will be good enough? I'm hoping to replace my current iPod with the SIII (using that USB dock with line-out hooked up to an Audica MPS1 speaker system) and having something that can cope with my appreciable music library (46GB last time I checked) might be a good "investment".
What's that? The GS3 supports more than like two codecs!
WIN!

mp3, 3ga, aac, m4a, wma - according to the PDF version of the user manual.
And I'm sure someone said FLAC was supported, but the manual's pretty hopeless, e.g. "Music player - Some file formats are not supported depending on the device’s software.". In other words they're not going to tell you what the software that they wrote supports!
i've read somewhere it also plays .ogg
Definitely! SGS III has plenty of equalizer preset compare to iPhone 4s.. And the deep black music player UI?! And the best video player in any smartphone today! Wow!
Or you can use PowerAMP and be done with it.
S3 is best sound with neutronmp and siyah kernel.
Don't forget purchasing that app for your music demand.
DTS ES 6.1 channel. Do you ever think it can be play on smartphone?
Yes, now!
Neutronmp with
- unlimit of file type (dts es, dxd, pcm, tta, wav, alac, flac, ......mp3)
- unlimit bitrate (50Mbps)
- parametric eq control
Since ip4s can not play hi definition track(24bit/96khz) , it stick to alac 16bit/44khz , it is not worth to be compared

Not too on topic but I will also highly recommend SGS3 in combination with V-Sonic GR07. The quality is just fantastic!

Correct but you have to bear in mind that the user input varies .
Some have poorer hearing some have poorer coded music many want loud loud and boom boom not quality .
I have tried all the sound mods and though some may give a wider sound they all suffer from white noise . Siyah kernel being typical loud loud but hiss hiss and poor quality .
Probably the best is Noozoid but even that is erratic and gives white noise .

ip4? ppisshh.

Use PowerAmp. You can increase the decibels and remove the volume limitation.
Yeah PowerAmp hands down is the best media player on the market for android has been since it's release.
It's well worth the $5 or what ever they are charging for it today. It sounds amazing, the UI flows well and hands down has the best
library structure out there.
PowerAmp however will not help you with Pandora or any other internet radio app. It's EQ only works for the music playing through the PowerAmp player. There are tons of equalizer apps on the market most are free and work fine, some require root but not all of them. Those that do require root tend to work a little better in my past experience and if your phone is rooted install the beats audio drivers <-- in the market place it's free. That will make a big difference.

I wouldn't install beats audio unless you make a nandroid backup. People have had tons of issues with these drivers for minimal audio quality increase.
If your rooted, STweaks from play store. Great app.

I agree, beats audio sucks.
I tried it out of curiousity more than anything (knowing up front that it is nothing but an overhyped EQ setting)
In my system, it seemed to install just fine and appears to be working etc but makes no difference at all in the sound quality or volume.
Volume + works in some apps but not in others.
I'm an audiophile I own and use several different high end headsets with my phone. Also use it in the car... it's all personal preference people rant and rave about some of the equalizer apps out there I think some of those sound horrible. Between personal preference and the wide verity of different headsets/speakers out there it's next to impossible to say xx app is the "best" audio quality tweak / booster ect. you have to try them and see which you like.
for the features and an amazing equalizer PowerAmp but it like I said, it won't work with pandora / slacker radio apps so your stuck with the market place EQ aps for that.
I personally think the beats drivers sound great, works well on my phone with my settings and my beats headphones, with 1 of my Bose headsets the bass is a little too heavy and low notes get a bit hollow so I disable it when using those. Sounds fine on the other set.
My thoughts on it.
use perseus kernel with stweaks ....

This post is amusing to me in a couple ways. I owned a very high end stereo shop for over 10 years.
We sold a lot of "True audiophile" equipment. One thing a true audiophile would never do in a million years is use anything with the beats name on it. Any true audiophile would be embarresed to admit they even own a set of beats headphones.
Now don't get me wrong, I own both a set of Bose QC15 (they work super for noise blocking on airplanes) and a set of Beats Studio's (I never would have bought them as they are WAY overpriced but I got them as a present) and I like them but I take a TON of abuse from guys who really are audiophiles for owning them.
Another thing audiophiles make a point of is not using any kind of phony IQ settings like the gimmicky beats stuff.

Why do you take abuse for them, what's wrong with them?

Lol, it's just kind of a snobbery type thing.
True audiophiles wouldn't be caught dead with a pair of beats headphones.
If you go to the sites like headphone.org, they riidicule the beats stuff as overpriced just constantly.

LG V60 ThinQ 5G ...does it decode MQA and play MQA music?

Just wondering if the LG V60 ThinQ 5G play MQA music?
thanks in advance.
Sadly, I don't think it does. While the sound is great - better than anything else introduced this year and far, far better than a Sammy or Apple - it doesn't have quite the same presence as the G8 does. Now, this could be due to different tuning but, listening to vocals like Norah Jones, "Come Away With Me" (my go-to evaluation song) she's just not quite as close to me on the V60 as she is through the G8. I am streaming Tidal. Last night I listened to a lot of music in a back-to-back comparison (with the 3-D Sound Engine OFF) I think that the G8 sounded better with music that has greater variability in volume levels ("Come Away With Me," Chrissie Hynde's "No Return," Alexandre Theraud's rendition of Claire de Lune). But, other, more uniformly loud pieces like Beach House's "Myth," it was really, really hard to distinguish one from the other.

My intel tells me that the LG V60 uses the same if not similar QUAD DAC as the LG V50 which can play MQA music

Still has to be licensed.
Just like external DACs need a firmware update to enable MQA support.

Edit, just want to add that the V30 has Sony DTS, however you need root to enable it in build prop.
Just because it's capable doesn't automatically mean it will support it.
Yes it it fully unfolds tidal MQA and MQA files if you have them.
