Mediatek CyanogenMod development - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

I don't know whether I should wait for the rn4 or go for the rn3. I'd really love the helio x20, but I don't think that would come to India cause of the lawsuit. Hypothetically, if it is launched, how would the software development be? Would it get many Roms? Cm especially? My second question is, if the rn4 comes with sd 652, it'll be like trading 3 mp of the rear camera in the rn3, for 2 cores in the rn4! Although, I'm not really into photography, that 16 mp cam does sound nice so do the 2 extra cores really make a difference, especially in gaming?

I've got the same question about the rom development for mediatek. I've used cm nearly for 2 years and I'll be switching to miui. It doesn't matter if there won't be cm for the rn4 mtk. Miui is good and I'm willing to do this change.
Being a photography amateur, i can tell you that mp doesn't do a difference. It's the sensor that counts. If the rn4 has a better image quality, go for it. Gaming depends on the gpu mostly and the adreno is more powerful than the mali. Will gaming be better with the 2 cores? I can't tell you.
Btw if that helps you, I'm buying the rn4 mtk insead of the rn3p.

Check the Redmi Note 3 (MediaTek) development thread if you want to get an idea of the scope for development (in short, some but not much). There are reports that there won't be a Snapdragon version of the Redmi Note 4 and you might have to unofficially import it. The difference in camera performance is negligible. Real world performance is identical, but GeekBench states the Redmi Note 4 has about 20% better single core performance, 50% better multicore performance and 25% better graphics performance on average. Also, the Redmi Note 4 has 10 cores which is 4 more than the SD650 and it is based on the 14nm architecture vs the 28nm of the SD650 but batterylife remains the same between the two.
Basically, the Redmi Note 4 is a slightly better phone but won't have anywhere near the amount of development the Note 3 has seen thus far. It not get CyanogenMod, but I think it will.

As a photographer I can confirm that higher megapixels doesn't necessarily mean better. Although people were saying that there's not much improvement in the rn4 cam over the rn3. I'd still take the 4 over the 3 anytime tho because the design is much nicer

So you're buying the rn4? Despite lesser development for mtk? Although MIUI is pretty great, many still do prefer cm and it being an mtk device, it reduces options for os change which I don't REALLY like... But according to notebookcheck.com the mtk GPU is better than the adrenochrome 510!! Which would've sold it for me, but mtk devices can't come to India because of a lawsuit with Ericsson and they're not planning on making a Qualcomm variant :'( also, when you get the phone, do tell me about it's camera performance!!

So the rn3 is still the better alternative, isn't it? Btw, the problem with unofficially importing it is that first off, it'll be in Chinese, so i have to fiddle around for the English version or flash English MIUI and then I don't know if I'll get warranty coverage, which I don't think I will... Lastly working with mtk devices scare me a bit, cause ive seen software like mtk flash tools, which I dont really understand! My mother has a Panasonic eluga turbo which is mtk and there isn't a single rom for that!!! (Literally)

You are NOT wrong!! The rn4 does look better! It's more squarish and well defined! The rn3 is a little curvy for my taste...

I'm on the fence on this one. I have a gut feeling that overall the Redmi Note 3 Pro might have better day-to-day performance because it's software is better optimised (X20 devices showed significant GPU lag in the beginning due to bad drivers, yet the Note 3 has open kernel sources and CAF builds). My heart says "Note 4" ("better" SOC, looks) yet my brain says "Note 3" (Awesome ROM support, cheaper). I hate the rounded plastic looking design of the Note 3 yet I think the Note 4 looks pretty good with its all metallic build and reflective chamfers (it just lacks a USB type C port for symmetry and reliability). On my Mi4c I stayed mostly on MIUI despite loving CM13 because of the better camera software (I am super-critical of camera performance, but I don't have high hopes for either of these in anything else but perfect conditions) so I think given the choice I would anyway have a MIUI running Note 3.
Usually, the reseller that you buy it from has a 1-2 year warranty, look out for those if it matters to you. I personally always do my own repairs, but we have a local reseller that repairs Xiaomi phones should I ever get stuck (I extrapolated it's the same where you come from). Generally speaking, Xiaomi is very tolerant when it comes to modifying devices, but you might have to read up more on that regarding your specific country.
I have flashed MIUI on a MediaTek Redmi Note 2 without any issue or difference from the Snapdragon versions. The Note 4 already has an English custom ROM available it's great, I've used it on 3 different Xiaomis before (Mi 4c, Redmi Note 2 and Mi 4). Here is the link: https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/6-9-15-19.34208/ . I haven't used flash tools on MediaTek devices but had to on several Snapdragon and Exynos devices. They're stupendously easy to use, you don't have to worry if it comes to that.

samsung galaxy s4 snapdragon or exynos

Hello everybody,I'm about to buy a samsung gs4 ,but I'm still wondering which one of them is better snapdragon or exynos ?
I've been heard that they are some trouble with the exynos version especialy with heat level . and the performance of the exynos are better then snapdragon .and the batterie life is better with exynos. At this point exynos version look better but overheating problem still worring me
And you figured the Verizon forum, where 100% of the devices are Snapdragons would be a good choice?

@yasay,
In my experienced, I did some research before buying my Exynos S4 and here are the pros / cons I found:
Pros:
performs better than the snapdragon versions (you can look for benchmarks in youtube)
never experience overheating, but I heard some people reporting this kind of issues
At this point there are many ROMs available for the exynos variant in case you want to use something different. I my case I used Omega Rom and I was very happy with the performance and the battery life (almost 2 days)
Cons:
I'm from Costa Rica and here the Exynos variants are for GSM 3G | HSPA+ networks. If you are in a place in which you have LTE available I suggest you get the snapdragon version

We Need KERNEL TWEAKS for our beloved KENZO

I was just reading through this article, "Advanced Kernel Tweaks for the OnePlus 3" and was really surprised by the improvement in battery life and performance by just making a few tweaks in the kernel profiles.
While the battery and SOT for our kenzo is already at par with most of the other devices, thanks to the massive battery, but still the thought of implementing the tweaks and further increasing the battery and performance to another level just amazed me. In this article the OP is talking about increasing the SOT upto 14hrs on OnePlus 3 without any significant trade off with the performance, with its 3000mAh battery. So, guys just think what these tweaks can do to our device.
Now, I'm not being too much greedy here but guys let's just give this a try. We have enough people here on our forum for testing.
Since, I'm not much active here and don't know much about the devs involved in the development of our device, so I ask everyone to tag the devs from our Redmi Note 3 forums, in this thread, so that they can look into it and work on highly optimising the different kernel parameters to get the most out of this device.
This is just a humble request from my side, which will benefit a lot of users. Its not that I'm commanding or forcing the devs to do it. Its just a humble request and the devs are free to neglect it.
Thanks anyways, let's hope the devs look into it at further improve the device's performance to another level.
The biggest problem is Snapdragon 650 is 28nm processor and Snapdragon 820/821 is 14nm. 650 will need higher voltage, higher power consumption to reach the stability and performance.
IF Snapdragon 650 were made with 14nm processing, I assume Kenzo will have around 12hr+ SOT straight out the box.
Second is processor architecture, 820/821 based on Kyro cores (heavily modified version of Cortex-A72/A73 core if I'm right, correct me this). Even small cluster of 820/821 will have the same or better performance to big cluster (2xCortex-A72) on 650.
10hrs+ SOT on Kenzo has reached hardware limitation. Miracle may happen, but don't expect it. Developers still looking for the best way to save your battery without trading too much performance.
IMO, Radon Kenzo is the "TWEAKED KERNEL" you need.
OT: Battery life is the only reason why RMN4 (SD) use 625 instead of 652 as we expected. RMN4 SD gonna have little worse CPU performance than MTK variant in trade of better graphic performance. And maybe battery life, I assuming it will have 12hrs+ straight out the box.
The clusters (there use the same archicture but the frequences are different) of s820/821 are at the same frequences less performing than a72, else same in 14nm the consumption of battery is too big with only big cores because there are not efficient for small usage .. so Qualcomm used their own cores mixed to perform correctly and battery consumption correct... but it's really not perfect (Geekbench 4 show well that kryo 100 are really not fantastic...)
If you want a big sot with 650, put down the big cluster... and launch them only on some bigs apps...
14h with an OP3 I think it's near to impossible, same with kernel tweaks... I know a OP3 user and generally it's not more than 5H SOT....
@Archmage1809, @jordandroid64 = The project was initially started for Nexus 5x which had SD 808, a hexa-core processer with 2xA57 and 4xA53 cores. Also it was built on 20nm architcure technology. So, that means there's hope for us too, if what I understood it right.

Xiaomi Note 3 Pro (Snapdragon) vs Note 4 (Snapdragon) Note 4x

Hello everyone,
I know this is the Q&A for N3P but I still wanna ask because I cant find that much comparasion between these three on english/german.
So, my questions are:
1. Speed? Not gaming, just Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube and such apps.
2. Camera? Normal and low light. I know the N3P has 16 megapixel but I am asking anyways. I just heard that both cameras are ultra bad in low light.
3. Battery? Is there a noticable difference?
Thanks!
rn3 pro's battery is grt but camera quality in both daylight and lowlight is pretty bad.
Go for one plus x if u can afford.
Or any Huawei phone's for better performance in every aspects.
Thanks for your answer. But, the battery life isnt as good as it is on Note3 and Note4 afaik.
Or, is it really true that you get about 8hours screen on? I want to switch to Xiaomi just because of that.
I dont make THAT much photos with my phone. I have lg g2 at the moment and I dont think that Note3/4 Camera is that much worse than lg g2.

If you're a gamer then Note 3
Actually Note 4 SD performance isn't that much poor compared to Note 3. You won't even notice a difference with normal usage. You can also expect better battery, over 10 hrs. SOT on Note 4 compared to 7 to 9 hrs. of Note 3(my own usage, others are claiming to get over 12 hrs. some even 14 though I don't know how they're doing it). I can end the day without looking for a charger with 7 to 9 hrs. of SOT so for me above that isn't really necessary. Note 4 also has better thermal performance(doesn't heat up that much, Note 3 may reach up to 45 degrees C when charging. I got it to 42 when playing although it's summer right now in my country).
If you're into Custom ROMs, etc. though then definitely Note 3. Actually only bought this over 4x because of the modding community plus the 700 mhz lte band on the Kate model.
Thanks for your answer. But that means that both phones are equally fast? I don't care that much about custom roms. I have since 5 years just aosp/cm Roms and I wanna test something different.
for me is just the performance important. Is there a difference that should be mentioned? not gaming, just overall speed.
1)Redmi note 3 pro special edition support 800 mhz 4G band which is usable on areas like villages away from big city's (there is a note 4 global edition with Snapdragon 625 which support 800 mhz band also)
2)note 3 pro vs 4 battery life its kinda same to improve battery also you can use xposed + power nap+amblify+greenify (maybe note 4 will get 30 min more battery cuz of a53 cores )
3)always aim to buy Snapdragon edition much better from mediatek Snapdragon gives sources and blabla
4)maybe Redmi note 3 got a little bit better performance on games cuz of x2 cores a73
5) colour or note 4 its a little better and design a little more wonderful for me on other hand with note 3 you can use radon kernel (for me its the best) and you can fix the colours same as note 4
6) cameras on daylight fotos are very good i could say best for the price of course because we talk for phones price range max 170$ huawei prices are 300+ so ofc they got better cameras
7)its the best option for value for money phones and about battery I get about 7 to 8 hours on my note 3 miui 8 7.4.27 with radon kernel using only cellular data because I'm on army and I use Facebook, messenger, viber, Instagram, whats app, some other apps (i got installed around to 90 apps) 0 lags the only you need its a good case and tempered glass cuz the durability on phones sucks but hey its 170$ max if you interested to go on higher price like 250$ I would told you to buy lettv 3 pro 821 Snapdragon 800 mhz and tons of much better performance ram etc
I hope I helped you a lot
N3P slight better performance over N4. Because SD650: 2x powerful A72 cores. (and yea sure 4x A53) Doesn't really matters in Day-to-day performance.
N4 better battery life over N3P. (Because 625 8x A53 built on 14 nm over 28 nm process in SD650)

Big thanks for so many informations!
And, if you were me, would you choose note 4/note 4x or note 3 pro?
As I have said, I dont play games on my phone. I just want a phone that can open and load apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp quickly and have a big screen-on time.
Is there a big difference in speed between those two? As I have said, not gaming speed but everything else.
Thanks
@chorba69 I would go for note 4 cuz of that awesome corners and edges its amazing but the version Snapdragon 625 and with 800 mhz band supported plus I'm not a power user to play games all the time its waste of time for me xd but both devices are perfect ahh I forget maybe note 4 got a little bit better cameras quality cuz of Snapdragon 625 cuz it support 24 mp instead of Snapdragon 650 on 21 mp its not that much comparable since both record 4k video on 30 fps and there is not a speed difference between those devices dont be attracted by antutu scores etc I use radon kernel with battery option and I never get a single lag also Snapdragon 625 its 14nm and 650 its 28nm so it will be a little bit cooler than note 3

Go for the Note 4 SD/Note 4X.
Note 3 vs Note 4 opening app speed difference is negligible, less than a second faster in favor of Note 3. While battery life and heat management improvement is noticeable on the Note 4, about 20% increase in battery life. Color reproduction of the screen too is better in the Note 4.

Thanks! Just, there is no difference in speed and battery between Note 4 SD and Note 4x or?
If there is, which one has better battery/is faster?
And one thing more: Does 4x come with LTE Band 20 or there is special version with lte 20 ? I live in Germany and that thing is important for lte frequency here.

Note 4 SD and Note 4X(3/32) are the same aside from LTE bands. Seeing that you're not in India, then definitely go with 4X but it doesn't have band 20 unfortunately. If you really need Band 20 then go for Note 3 Special/International Edition(Kate).
Here: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=7863&idPhone2=8580
Based on your usage I'd advice you go for Note 4X but if band 20 is really important then pick Redmi Note 3 Pro Special Edition. As I said earlier, I also chose Kate over 4X because of band 28.
Note 4x has the same camera sensor as LG G6. Dk how xiaomi manages to mess up with photos quality.
There's no big improvement in camera regarding those two. Note 4x has a better battery backup due to 14nm chipset. Note 3 has better community support. Note 3 is better in gaming. Note 4 looks better ( especially on that full black model ).
If i were to choose i'd go with the RN3P, as it has, if not the same, but close to a nexus phone community support, gonna be a long living device.
I googled now again and I found there is some Note 4 with the same specs as Note 4x and it has lte band 20.
should I get it over Note 3 pro?
Or it is not possible that there is a Note 4 with everything same as Note 4 just with Band 20?
http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_620903.html
Hi people, above the link. I ordered this one. It should be the Note 4 or the Note 4x (I dont understand it yet) with LTE Band 20 or?
I just dont understand where is the difference between International version and Global version.
I guess theres nothing "big" between those two.
I have RN3Pro and was on latest Developer version (stock kernel), rooted and Xposed install, but no battery improvement apps/modules installed, just other type of tweaks. I just bought it and didn't tested on Stable version yet without root and Xposed. Maybe its better, don't know.
On first SS you can see how much Screen was ON per session. I plugged it on PC for some work, but it was not much... that's on second SS.
Thanks for Infos @apriores
everything above 5 hours screen on is new for me. I have lg g2 and I chose the xiaomi redmi because of the battery life.
just, I heard that even more than 8-9 hours of screen on are possible. have you ever made it above 8hours sot?
I had max sot of 10h on my rn3 pro
I suggest you to get rn3 pro because of better performance and development.
1) I think 4X has better design, I have used both and 4X gives better hold experience. Also it looks more expensive than 3P
2) If you don't aim to play game too much, buy 4X, 625 give better speed, just weaker GPU, moreover it is based on 14nm so better power management.
3) Camera, I will choose 3P, Snapdragon 650 support Zero Shutter Lag and some stuff better than 625, how ever in real condition, I still have some feeling that 3P take better pictures than 4X.
4) Audio, choose 3P, Snapdragon 650 has some better specs for Audio than 625, the default may very bad, but believe me, install DivineBeats and it just no difference like V20 or some stuff that has DACs.
5) Screen, 4X has better screen, 3P a little yellow in my opinion.
6) Connectivity: 4X, newer X9 LTE chip gives better connection than X8.
That's all, consider on your own.
Thanks. I ordered already a Note 4x with LTE Band 20 for Germany. I hope made a good decision. Thanks y'all in this thread.

Redmi note 4 (MTK) 4G/64G vs Redmi note 4 (SD) 4G/64G which one do I buy?

I want to get the redmi note 4 but am a bit confused and I need help.
I have both the Helio X20 and Snapdragon 625 both 4G/64G in my chart but don't know which one to buy
Here are my preferences:
#1 Crisp audio (with better noise reduction) during recording Audio or video
#2 Front camera with better low light performance.
#3 I don't play too much heavy game the heaviest I've played is Asphalt 8 but good performance for multi tasking and day to day use.
#4 Battery life.
#5 Custom ROM with fast charge.
Am a bit drawn to the Snapdragon version with LTE Band 4 and 20 but I need the opinion of others about the Helio X20 version too
Here's the like for the two devices:
Snapdragon 4GB/64G
Helio X20 MTK 4GB/64G
Please I need to learn from your experiences
Thanks
I added a picture showing the differences but not so much details. And I really need real life experiences with this phone.
Reserved
Only Snapdragon version. 10+ hours SOT, no overheating, good support in XDA.
If you wanna taste custom ROM definitely go SD version
Snapdragon. Its powered by Sd625 built on 14nm process
1)No heat
2)Good battery life(sometimes even 10+ hrs SOT)
3)Most things are kind of Snapdragon Optimized

Exynos 9820 Performance

There's too much misinformation around and once I get my unit I will have about 28 days to decide if to keep it or skip this generation, I would like to use this thread to build evidence on how good or bad the international version of this device is, if Samsung scammed 90% of the world then they don't deserve our money.
I'm getting mixed feelings about this chip, In speed test G the 855 beats it by a huge margin, so most people went back spitting at it for being a badly optimized SoC.
Anandtech's Comparisons Show super disappointing scores for the S10 Exynos version, but many of the scores presented make no sense, with older hardware of the same OEM scoring better than the newest, I don't know how much to believe that review and I hope it is fake or badly executed, to my interest, my pre-order comes with the Exynos version and there's no way to have warranty on a 855 in the UK.
Then, the positive evidence we have is that it beats every other released phone on the market in battery usage, there's no such video about the 855 yet so we can't compare them, but that's all I found about the battery of this chip.
In a S10+ vs iPhone XS Max, the S10+ again Exynos beats the iPhone on almost every application, I didn't expect that to happen since it almost never happened, the apps are supposedly the same most of the time and they might as well have completely different algorithms to do the same task done superficially, but generally iOS apps are cleaner inside and their developers have higher standards of work, so how can Exynos be THAT much better?
From what I see the Exynos 9820 is not as what is perceived here on XDA....

And that's a demo unit with 6GB of ram, there are even higher benchmarks with real ones around:
https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/12211126
But everyone is dismissing Geekbench as "not reliable", and in a way it is not reliable since it doesn't demonstrate the effectiveness of a good scheduler, even the crappiest ones will be pushed to maximum performance once geekbench runs, we need more comparisons with other tools.
it is a solid fact that the Exynos is much faster than anything else in single core performance except the apple A12 and is much faster than the SD855 , while the SD855 is faster in multi core but no by much,
my only concern with the exynos is the stuttering and frame drops and the smoothness overall , i don't care about benchmarks really , and the S10 is ultra fast in launching apps already in both the exynos and SD855 , but the main concern as i mentioned is the smoothness which i think will be related to how the KERNEL will handle & is optimized and if was targeting performance or targeting efficiency only.
