Do you guys think these G5 camera shots are normal? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Just as what the title says, do you guys think these G5 camera shots are normal? Why?
To me they look mostly terrible, especially when zoomed in, the pics would go blurry and painting-like. Lots of grains in low lights. I hope this is normal though.
I'm wondering how this handset is even a flagship

Really appreciate your confirmation. I just thought mine was defective and that I needed to get it replaced before the warranty is out. Mine is a G5 SE by the way.
Still, this selfie shot of my pal bugs me out, given plenty of light and the shot still looks like sht. I mean it doesn't look good enough to my taste, rather too cartoonish sigh../:

Photo's aren't meant to be zoomed into unless you take them manual RAW.
The selfie I would say the mouth moved causing the weirdness.
The photo's on the my G5 are excellent and manual is as good as you'll get outside of an SLR.
Reading the specs for the G5 SE, seems it's a different processor? Probably accounts for the shots coming out a bit blurry if the processor can't keep up. If the processor is cut down the the phone you have isn't a flagship
I would get an S6 or S7 if you're not happy, as the iphones cameras are pants.

Well, that sounds like bad news I wanted to love this phone. Anyways thanks for clearing it up for me

Video recording is tough for me as well. My brother took some amazing videos with iPhone SE compared to my blurry ones. As for the photos Simple & Auto are the worst. I'm guessing it has something to do with software. Try Manual, tinkering with the settings, and you'll notice the difference.
Here are some pics I took using Manual.

Wow superb shots you got there! So your G5 in simple & auto mode takes about as bad quality still pics as mine? like water color paintings?

G5 is bad in taking macro shots, on the contrary it's very good in panorama shots.

G5 takes amazing shots, I use it for my instagram, it's fantastic!!!!
If you want very sharp shots, use manual mode, manual focus and shoot in DNG.
The wide angle lens loses lots of details in darker environment, but still so fun to use.

I dragged the slider at the bottom with a face image on both sides all the way to the left and wahlah the front camera take sharper and more detailed shots ever since. Thank you!!
So my G5 SE is normal isn't it? I don't need to RMA it right?

And remember taking selfies in bright condition makes photos sharper as the iso is not pumped up.

Need your quicke help, is my camera defect? check my pics....

hello guys, i need to know for sure if my camera is defect or not since i need to exchange it by monday.
the pics are attached.
i have taken the pics with and without night mode. the ones taken with night mode are much brighter and have much more severe flare.
is that normal?
Its all good.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Totally normal.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Nightmode increases the iso hence the lighter pictures. You should notice either more noise in the picture or loss in sharpness as the built in noise reduction kicks in. The flare you see is lenses flare from the bright light sources in the picture and us a result of the increase in iso. Its all basic photography stuff, and no your cameras not buffered.
Better quality cameras and lenses can reduce it to some extent but mobile and compact cameras are very limited which us why people pay thousands for dslr's cameras and even more for quality lenses.

how can u say, daytime pics are great, video too. but night and low light is not as good though. u know any other better camera on the market?
Camera lens might be broken
My camera suddenly had problems with focusing and the pictures were terrible/not as good as they used to. Inspecting the camera lens closely did not reveal anything odd.
When I disassembled the back of my phone (removed the battery cover, removed the screws and gently took apart the back of the phone housing) I still could not see anything wrong with my camera lens/cover. The lens/cover is part of the back of the phone housing.
However, then I held the lens/cover up against a really bright light and looked through the lens/cover, I discovered that there are several layers in this lens/cover and that one of them had cracks (looked like a snowflake). It was impossible to see this without disassembling the phone housing and holding the cover up against a bright light looking though it.
Trying to take a picture without the cover everything was perfect. Ordered a new phone housing from ebay the same day...
Your pictures seems to have the same characteristics as mine; not focused and a bit blurry. Try to remove the back of your phone housing and see if that helps. If it does; order a new phone housing.

A camera that only works properly in daylight is a terrible camera, regardless of how good the daytime photos are. Tbh I'm just a bit mad about the night video focus crap.
btw, with the old rom my lens was moving out hitting the glass making a clicking noise, xxkg1 (XEF)
now updated official poland version
and there is no clicking? is that normal?
Also, with the new version (Poland) that has no cliicking, when i change the scene to text (i guess its macro in english) i do get a small clicking sound again - the lens moving against the glass.

do you guys think that the amaze have the best camera?

guys a friend of mine just got the motorola razer,
its a really good phone now that i see it more often,
but i was testing our camera with the razor camera,
our have more features witch i think is the only phone and the mytouch slide that have more features on the camera,
well i noticed with both cameras on that the razor have better low light pictures in we were at starbucks this afternoon, and i got both cameras on when i moved these phones sides on the amaze you could see the lights moving fast and on the razor it was smooth, low light was perfect when on the amaze it was kinda yellow
even on the ffc when i moved them the razor looked better than the amaze,
what do you guys think? is it something we could fix on ours maybe a tweak
or its the way the camera was built?
I hate the yellow tone to indoor pictures! You can tell when you go into settings and uncheck widescreen, the image will turn normal for a split second and then go back to yellowish. A tweak would be awesome.
Other than that this camera is fantastic.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA App
The camera itself on the amaze is better. You just have to do some software tweaking like play around in manual mode with lighting saturation contrast iso etc. And turn auto enhance off.
Also if you're seeing yellow change the white balance in manual mode.
I just went from the MyTouch 4g Slide to the Amaze. Cameras are comparable, and both very good. I think the clarity on the Amaze is a bit better- I took a pic of a book with a post it on it to compare, and could read the handwriting on the Amaze version where it was blurry on the 4gSlide. Slide has markings on the lens, but I can't tell that the optics are any better on the older phone. All in all, very good, very fast camera.
#1 complaint about the Amaze camera is the retarded focusing. It gets even worst in low light. So if you're in a hurry, your first pictures will always be blurry. Best thing you can do is turn off Auto focus, and keep it in manual mode.
I also hate the yellow looking indoor pictures also. It's a decent camera but I wouldn't stay the best.

change the white balance settings in manual mode!!! also they yellowish nature of the picture is party because of the yellowish tint of the amaze screen..you can only tell a picture apart if you look at the same picture taken with two camera's on the same screen
Thanks to whoever it was that mentioned about going into settings and white balance. Definitely looks a ton better and takes out the yellowish hue. Now I am happy with the camera. Before that only outside pics look good. Inside was terrible, but this helped out a ton.
Thanks!

This is true Nokia does make very nice camera's on their phones...so does sonyericsson which is now only sony, since sony is also in the business of point and shoot, they can make camera's better than a manufacturer that's only in cellphones.
the camera really take good pictures if you are not in a hurry,
but my concern was when u have it open and move around, its very fast, when i saw the razr it was smooth and the lights were not like lazer looking as with the amaze was,

I think it is safe to say that you had the champion of champs of phone cameras.
The Amaze seems to be among the best cell phone cameras of all time. Definitely top 5 if not top 3, and there have been alot of cell phone models that have come out over the years.

Zenfone 3 Deluxe Camera test

All right, at this point, I think the camera is really good after the updates. I am not an expert on pictures though so lets get a community review on it.
Please, take pictures with your Camera please and post them here. Get outside and inside pics, good light and especially low light pics.
Please include a description of the non-obvious environmental variables of the pictures so we have context of the results, especially for those who haven't bought one yet. I know we would all have loved to see this thread before we bought the phone so please contribute your efforts.
Rules for posting:
1. Try to take good pics. If your pics look nowhere near as good as the pics already posted, then ask for help before posting so you can represent the camera correctly.
2. I took my pics in manual mode. In Low Light, they came out way better than in Auto mode. Play around and see what works best for you.
3. Make sure your phone is updated and make sure the camera app is fully updated as well. We know pictures werent great pre-updates, but now that the updates have come out, I personally think they look great.
Lets fix the bad rep this camera has gotten as I think it was prematurely judged. Or maybe I just need to go play with other cameras, as what I see as really good is really nowhere near good enough. Lets figure out which is the truth
Here are two photos I took. One is with all my lights on and the other is with all lights out, at night with only my TV on. I was very impressed as I feel it debunks all the criticism of the Camera's low light performance. I took both pics in manual mode
Ignore those photos and see these. XDA limits resolution. These stored in my Google photos are full res
One observation: I am assuming the one on the right is with lights out. It appears that it has a much better white balance result than the other one. It will be interesting to see what others post.
As few posts as are showing up on this forum, it seems the phone is not getting out there very much.

You are correct the one on the right is with the lights out. One possible reason for the hue difference is likely that my lights give off a yellow hue and my walls are also slightly yellow. Then my TV has a Full array LED backliggt which will give off pure white light. I mention this as both pics were taken with the same settings. Just a theory though, as I personally think the one on the right looks a little better and that is the only way I can explain it. Your guess is as good as mine though.

I am sure that the warmer light from the lights, and yellow on the wall, is a definite contributor. The only way to correct colors in these situations is to have a custom white balance where you can use something white to have it calibrate to. No phone does that, that I'm aware of.
Here are some photos I took. XDA restricts file size so here is my Google Photos Album

I held it in my hands and just held it still as it snapped the pic. It was in Manual Mode. Hold it still as when it detects low light, it extends the exposure time and then after the photo is taken, it will be a lot brighter than you anticipated. Alternatively, while in manual, you can hold the screen for a second the drag right and it will increase the exposure time. During the day it takes an instant photo and the exposure time is nonexistent, but to get great low light shots, it is necessary to increase the exposure time. The photos always come out better on my phone than the scene looked at night in real life. Let me know if that is at all confusing and I will try to explain better.
Ok I get it. Thanks. That convinced me to buy this device. Camera is ok enough to do it.

In my opinion, the camera is more than okay enough. There are so many camera modes, it is ridiculous. And the Camera stabilization is incredible when taking video is incredible. Just don't take low light photos in Auto Mode as it does nothing to correct it, but ironically in manual mode, the camera does automatically correct low light (unless you manually adjust the exposure time, then that setting will take pecedent).
I think the reviews that said low light photos were bad were either taken in auto mode or the updates fixed a whole lot before I got my phone. Either way, low light now is excellent. I have a feeling that they just didn't fully teat the camera as one review even stipulated that they didn't change any if the modes.

Just took a slowmo of my TV while watching the walking dead, and it was pretty nice. Looks like what I hoped it would. As smooth as I would expect slow motion to be. OIS works really well as the picture was perfectly stabilized through the entire footage. I think OIS disables when I zoom in though because when I did, my phone was a little shaky. That is just a testament to how good it works when it is enabled though. I haven't tested it with real life slow motion yet but if it does really good recording motion of a TV show, the I imagine real life will be just as nice, if not better.
Just did another of me moving my hand and fingers really fast for 30 seconds and it was really smooth. I am impressed. It looks like a slow motion replay like you see in sports. I assure you, you will be very happy. I didn't even expect it to be that good.

HDR+ Google Camera Mod

Anyone tried the ported HDR+ google camera on LG G5? If yes, how's the photo quality compared to stock?
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-hdr-ported/
I've been using the HDR app on my G5. Works well so far. A test shot of a convenience store after close gave opportunity for vibrant colors and bright lights against shadows. The normal camera on auto mode had entirely blown out whites at the cooler. G5 HDR gained some detail there and balance overall. Google HDR+ restored much more detail in the whites, truly dynamic range. It did tend to oversaturate but it was much more accurate to the naked eye than the normal camera actually. It also darkened the shadows a bit much but again that was more accurate visually and detail was still there to recover in post processing if desired.

That was stock camera HDR in middle. On a standalone picture aesthetic I'd agree due to brightness but do note the HDR+ seemed more accurate in context of a store with no overhead lights on after midnight. Stock made it look like I was open lol.
In low light there is so much less noise with G Cam compared to other apps. Also with direct opposing sunlight I prefer the G Cam. Rest is handled better by LG Cam IMO.
I agree that the colors are not as vibrant with G Cam though.

Camera pictures are way too grainy

A few months back I upgraded my phone from op2 to LG g5 H860.
So, I've been playing around with my phone and I noticed that my camera pictures are grainy. Seems like pictures taken on a 5mp (or lesser) camera.
I took pictures with my camera (all default settings and auto mode) without any zoom and after capturing I tried to zoom in into the picture, like 20% zoom to notice that they are very noisy. I'm not so good at photography, so I never bothered to check this kind of stuff with my other phones before.
I have taken pictures with both rear and front cameras and they both look very noisy. Like water color painted pictures. I'm not sure if I'm putting the right words here but I think you get what I am talking about. I am adding a sample attachment.
Can someone tell me if this is normal or am I missing something here or if there's some problem with my phone itself?
I am already frustrated that I can't unlock my bootloader and I hope this wouldn't add more to it.

Man, I had the same exact problem.. buy new lens.
Try manual mode and turn down the iso speed. Sometimes higher iso speeds produce heavy grain. See if that helps any.
