to root or not. request for opinion - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

sorry for such a simple question but I need expert and/or experienced advise.
I have a samsung galaxy S4 AT&T I337 Ver 5.0.1 firmware OK2.
Out of contract
I want to rid myself of the bloatware, my principal objective.
I worry about not getting security updates once rooted, (even though at&t is not quick about doing updates anyway). Do I just track the forums here to look for updates? Will i have to go back to kitkat for every update?
And second I have a mac air computer, so odin may not be easily done without ready access to a pc., and maybe not at all. I understand I have to odin back to 4.4.4 and then update with a rooted rom. I haven't found recent experiences using jodin on this particular device, and the jodin posts I found indicate it doesn't flash a large file. I don't know if I would be doing that or not.
Thanks for your all's opinion.

Do you play Pokemon go, then no, else of course root it!

AT&T phones have locked bootloaders, thus no root.

I see talk of locked bootloaders and then I see this thread about getting to root on OK2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/how-to-installed-custom-lollipop-rom-t3135396
Can you explain please.

[Q] Don't know what's wrong...

I'm new to rooting and the whole android scene. Just bought my s4 a month ago and rooted it this week. I've been trying to customize themes and icons and I know I need to deodex the files on my phone. I downloaded universal deodexer and dropped the files where I needed to but the program wouldn't run. My question is, is there any other way to deodex the files and how exactly do I locate them? Maybe I didn't locate the right ones.
First off, its pretty cool that you are actually trying to learn what you are doing. The initial learning curve is pretty big but you will get the hang of it piece by piece. I can't speak for everyone but I as still learning and started with the Droid years ago. Take a look at this post for some useful info. Credit to Obsidian for the definitions and links. Just take note that some of his definition do not apply to this phone since it was created for the Bionic, but most of the info is helpful and universal.

Now, to answer your question. Honestly I would flash a pre-deodexed rom and use it to modify things. A few are in the Samsung Development section that are basically TouchWiz minus the bloat. You may even find one there that suits you perfectly with no extra modding.

check out the youtube channel of DroidModd3rX... find his video titled "Verizon Galaxy S4 How To Unbrick, Unroot, Return to Factory Set"... even if you don't have a Verizon GS4 this will help you if you bricked your device. If you have a different Carrier than verizon then check out "wwjoshdew" channel on youtube........ check out his video titled "How To Unroot and Flash your Galaxy S4 to Stock Android 4.2.2"..... I'm sorry i didn't find you earlier.:crying: ........ this might help you to not pay where you "voided your warranty... please please please do this if you can get your phone back from the company. It will re-warranty your device.
It's ok, I found that video on you tube, and a couple others. I tried all their methods for I bricking, but to no avail. Now all it says is "firmware upgrade error. Please continue in Kies". But it won't let me do anything else.

Even ODIN?
Yea i tried Odin, 3.07 and I tried three different stock images and none of them worked. It got to a part during the process that said "Auth (fail)" and then it would close out the program. I just got my replacement yesterday but I'm kind of afraid to root it again lol.
Although I would really like to root it again, since half of the stuff I used it for had nothing to do with what caused the problem in the first place. I was just really excited to download and install a custom room that didn't lag as much as this nonsense from Samsung.

Your original problem sounded like you were trying to flash the mdk firmware on a me7 firmware which would cause auth fail in odin.
But I couldnt find any info above. If you did the the me7 root method you wont have write permissions because boot loader is locked. which would brick your phone when you flash a rom.
Is the me7 root method the one that roots through the micro SD? Is there a way to do so and unlock the bootloader currently or has one not been released yet for the newest Verizon update?

if you did it through terminal then yes. you are on me7 which is why odin gave you problems. currently there is no way to unlock the bootloader. only the firmware previous to me7 can unlock it. So you might be stuck for a while.
Well that's kind of a drag. Installing custom ROMs is the only thing that an unlocked bootloader does? Or is there another reason to root the phone now instead of waiting for a root that unlocks it? Sorry for all of the questions...

did you update to the new update that the phone was bugging you about when you first got your phone? if yes, then, YOU CANNOT FLASH ANYTHING! OR IT WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE. if you haven't, then, thank the good Lord that you didn't fall into the samsung trap. you can check on Settings/mydevice/about_phone/Build_Number.... i believe the last frace would say me7... if then, you're kinda screwed for now... if you have something else than youre ok:good:... root still lets you uninstall or freeze that bloatware on your phone. Only thing I used iy for anyways. have about an extra 400mb of ram freed.
Well that is good to know in case I decide to go through with rooting again. Is there a way to uninstall that update? Or am I stuck waiting for a new method to root the phone that allows flashing? I might root again just to have some of the apps like gmd gesture and greenify.

no you cant do anything right now besides the root. cant uninstall because the bootloader is locked.
some rooted apps are nice to have. just gonna have to wait patiently
In that case, are there any apps you would suggest getting that won't destroy my phone again? I checked online for a list of must-have apps but half of them were directed at people who were experienced with rooting.

I would just get titanium backup for now. and remove some bloatware a safelist can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314265 would not experiment with deleting random things it could cause brick problems nothing much else. if you are not comfortablr with that just try and wait for bootloader to be unlocked which has no eta
I may just do that. If I were to root again on me7 since there's no unlock method, if one were to be released would I be screwed or is there normally a way to do that at a different time than the root?

For the moment, yes. Attempting to return to a previous stock ROM, even via ODIN, will fail - I tried this myself last night. ODIN hangs on trying to install the last part of the ROM (the bootloader, if I remember right). If you do try to use ODIN to restore a stock ROM, you will need to run a repair install of the 4.3 ROM (you'll lose all data on the phone). Fun stuff.
So in short, we're locked & unrooted if we update using the official update via Verizon's update software.

Aren't both the S4 and N3 4.3 builds rooted? Maybe you're thinking bootloader unlocking???
After OTA my n2 lost root.
I can also confirm, that Kingo roots the N2 after taking the Verizon OTA, but the bootloader remains locked. For me acquiring root again was great, because I use the Xposed framework a lot and many other apps that need root. As for the bootloader, I'm sure that sooner or later, one of the great devs will kick butt and get it unlocked. For those guys that challenge is like an itch.

How do I root Verizon Note II 4.4.2 ND7?

I'm not happy with this releases installed software and would like to root my Verizon Note II. It's on 4.4.2 ND7. Also will I be able to unlock my bootloader so I can install CWM or TWRP and install custom roms? Thank you.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Free mobile app
You dont... no root method available right now. Even if there were root. There's no unlock method for bootloader after 4.3. You are stuck with what verizon has given you for now, possibly forever.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Free mobile app
I see. That really sucks.
There's a rom out there that's a rooted 4.4.2 ND7. Would I be able to flash this with Odin to gain root without causing any issues to the bootloader?

No. That's for people who never took the 4.3 update and got to unlock their bootloader. If your running mj9 or nd7 your stuck there.

Another Question
Anyone care to verify that this is legit and works to root the Verizon Note II 4.4.2? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBP1Ql7wck4 . I see that there is the ability to download the root file for the VZW Note II on 4.4.2. I will do some more research. If anyone tries it please report your findings. Thanks.
My guess is no. Anything you find on rooting or flashing recovery is highly unlikely to work on the vzw note 2. Thanks for nothing, verizon.

I'm in the same situation, and I'd just like to rattle the bars of this jail cell VZW has put us Note II 4.4.2 OTA folks in. The SD card write lock is a ridiculous overreach in the name of "security."
I hear that. I don't know about anyone else's phone but after I updated to ND7 my phones been buggy. Fails on sending texts and general locking up. I've factory reset it twice and have 2.7gb available on the internal storage. Come on somebody!

In the same boat here. Bought used, already updated. I didn't think there was an [upper class] Android device right now that couldn't be modified, so I didn't know to research first... I just came to the threads right before buying and saw the dev was booming so figured I was good.
Did VZ drop the ball here or are all carriers having this issues with the Note 2?
Root unavailable?
So basically I can't root the phone? I want to be able to use some apps that require root, is there a way to root without messing with the bootloader or not? Mobilodin maybe? I also have that 4.4.2 OTA nightmare. Thanks

Anyone devised a way to unlock this god forsaken bootloader? Verizon has overstepped their bounds imho. No 3rd party write access to sd? That's just ridiculous. Also, cyanogenmod would be great, but safestrap doesn't work now. Anyone have anything in the works? I would be willing to test anything available. I'm running I605VRUFND7 on the KOT49H kernel, and have plenty of experience with Odin, so no worries over bricking at the moment. Also, there is still a bounty out for anyone that can unlock it. Galaxy Note Edge Stock 5.1.1 Firmware

Samsung has Released Android 5.1.1 Lollipop For the Galaxy Noted Edge "Sprint variant"
THIS WILL ONLY WORK WITH "NOTE EDGE FOR SPRINT"
How To Install:
1. Download the stock 5.1.1 firmware from here: https://mega.nz/#!StEHUJpS!5D20VK0KeW3fk383Q1LJoQ5zyqES6ta1xiwH3jaRBmU
2. And Okay... hmmm I'm pretty sure all of you know how to flash a stock rom using odin
Why not screenshots??
Because I don't own a Note Edge Unfortunately
There isn't much of a visual change from 5.0 really... Except for the contacts app.
Sent from my SM-N915P using Tapatalk
But it will fix a lot of bad flashes
Amen brother like my bad flash lol
Same rooting method once installed?
No
Would i have any problems if i odin this on a rooted Edge? I dont care abot root anymore since no one is supporting the sprint edge anyways.
Just odin over 5.0 or do i have to odin factory k.k than odin lollipop and than this ? TIA.
Odin over then wipe in Stock recovery
killer! I luvs it - finally getting that annoying default text tone - never sounded so good!
So has anyone found a way to root this file yet?
can wait for a rooted one, we really dont have many devs though, sucks cause this phone rocks
So whats different between 5.0.1 and this, is it worth me losing root and hoping to get it back in the future
Any word on whether this can be rooted?
CF Auto Root worked for 5.0.1. I wonder if it will work for 5.1.1. I'm tempted to try it....

Well, I don't need to try it, I found that it cannot be done because Samsung added root protection to the kernel. This post and related thread is from Note 4, which I'm sure is the same situation for the Edge:

I am confident that we will achieve root. That is not the issue for me. I am waiting around for Xposed to support TW 5.1.1. Until then, I will use other methods to mitigate Stagefright. With ongoing security patches, I'd imagine that there will be plenty of people who can take the upldate.zip and repackage it to be flahable via custom recovery.

Is it possible to root OF1?

the phone in question is a T mobile Galaxy S5, used to be mine running full root since 4.4.4 and had cn 11 on it, now wife is useing it and she wated it stock, so I odined the latest stock t mobile 5.0 firmware onto it, since then it has updated twice to 5.1.1 as I'm not too familiar with 5.1.1 I figured I better ask if it can be rooted.
if it can it will be much appreciated, right now it has done random reboots three times so far today and she is about to go back to Applel
5.1.1 can be rooted using hispasian's kernel. It can find in the android development thread. BTW, tell your wife that Apple is tight about "rolling back" and/or if at all, to previous ios versions if the new version stinks. I was lucky to perform rollbacks on older iphone generations but the newer ones are harder for obvious reasons. I stayed on 4.4.2 because of towelroot -- I'm not too fond of 5.1.1 because of the lag and unstable root methods right now.
Any questions? Please let me know. We would wan't want your spouse to join the "dark side" we call Apple. =) <couldn't resist the star wars pun there>
Thanks I'll loom there here in a minute I want her to be an android person I like androids better because you can remove the SD card, Apple has no SD card, plus as long as it's not a s6 you can swap batteries, I usually keep two spares in my Jeep when we go looking in NC for houses just in case

Please excuse my stupidity
well in another thread i was wondering if flashing TWRP+CM still works on FOL1 & the user said yes, so.... i'm sure root is always possible, unless your question is to keep knox (you're probably out of warranty anyway)
there are modified TW roms that are prerooted if self rooting fails
random reboots with what apps installed? disable any you dont use, disable gestures, samsung crap, etc etc...
I don't want knox, I don't want 5.1.1 either what I want is to put 4.4.4 on in or 4.4.2 and root it real fast before it updates

not sure what the rush is, there is no such thing as sudden updates that you cant stop, if you flash 4.4 then it's stuck on 4.4, but what if the newer baseband wont work well with the old android?
also, 4.4 is crap, you'll be insecure with fewer features & so on
i really find it unlikely that 5.1.1 is causing all problems, also you could even try 5.0.1
