Magnetic chargin problem. - Xperia Z2 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
One day my tab stopped charging from the magnetic cable.
Whenever i plug-in, i get a blinking light and the battery light on status-bar goes on and off, ultimately not charging. The cable still charges my Z1.

Factory reset didn't help either.

Sometimes it hapens to me too.
My conclusion is that it is a matter of bad contact between tablet and the magnetic connector.

Cleaned up the connector with alcohol. Thankfully it's still under warranty.

Sony RMA the device and gave me a new one. Old one was 16gb , this one is 32gb. Win - win

The problem returns with the new device! Took it around 2 weeks but this tab stopped charging aswell, over the magnetic interface.
Wth is going on.

I never had this issue with the original Sony charging cradle, but I noticed it when charging via cable using a smartphone charger. If the charger does not have at least 250 mA, it goes on and off. Is your magnetic charger an original Sony device?

Well after two weeks the issue reappeared. Dont know if the power is sufficient or not, but then how come it worked with original device AND replacement device.

I know this forum is probably dead a long time ago (years?), but ill take a shot and ask a supplementary question.
The Sony service denies fixing my tablet, citing the cause of problem the non-Sony magnetic cable as the fault.
Ive been using the magnetic cable on my Z1 phone for almost 2 years now with no issues. I dont understand how the cable can **** up the Tablet.
Are they legally valid not to repair my device free of charge (its within the warranty period) ?

I wouldn't have told them I was using a different cable, but yeah they can deny service. Technically, they have to prove that your aftermarket device loosened the port, but I'm sure they've tested it at this point since so many people had the same issue. On the other hand, this also compromises the waterproof ratings.
The issue is the port gets hot and the adhesive weakens. Aftermarket magnetic docks have stronger magnets that yank the charging port right out. Honestly it's a stupid design defect and there should have been more than adhesive, you can try that task with customer service.
You can remove the magnetic charging port and replace the small adhesive strip with a suitable thin high temp doublestick adhesive. I've considered epoxy as well but haven't pulled the trigger. In the mean time, know that the magnet unseats the port on the device and it must be pushed back in.

Hi, my Tab never got a loosed port. When i connect it, it starts blinking red, not charging.
When i drove there to pick up my un-repaired tablet back, along with the cable i gave them, they delivered the cable without a magnet.
After a long verbal fight, denying that the cable was ever send to them in its nominal form (with the magnet), they finally gave in and gave me an official Sony cable (i know , too late, eh?)/.
Truth be told, the Sony magnetic cable is SLIGHTLY different.
For example, i can charge my Z1 phone while wearing a silicon sleeve-case with the an-official magnetic cable, but with the Sony one, there is no clearance.
Also, a very important difference is, the old magnetic cable would convey the charge from any power source (like any type of Ambers charger, for example the usb port, or a less strong (less Ambers) sony charger.
The official magnetic cable, work almost only with the Z2 tablet charger. For example, it wont charge my Z1 over the USB PC port like the old one did.
Can anyone exaplin this, since i just cant see any extra type of filter or dunnowhat present on cable.

Crappy charger/usb cable, use it with care

*Sigh*...
Had the same problem with the TF101... After a while the tablet suddenly wouldn't charge anymore and it turned out to be the cable which suddenly went bad.
Now again the exact same problem with the TF201. This is pretty damn annoying, will contact customer support but am wondering if someone has experience with ebay cables that do work.
Already bought this one: http://www.ebay.nl/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130678359515&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:NL:1123
But of course that doesn't properly charge either (oh, and I still have an original cable from the TF101 which works fine, so it definitely IS the cable). The tablet responds (turns on) and charges as if connected to USB port of the pc or something but doesn't fast charge. (Pins seem fine, nothing out of the ordinary to be seen).
So also a warning, be careful with charger and cable! Like the rest of the prime it is very sensitive to malfunctioning :/ Quite disappointed that they didn't address this with the TF201 as charger and cable were an issue with TF101 as well.
do you always yank the cable directly to detach ur device from the charger? I've been using mine for a long time now, it's still as good as new and charging well.
The key is to treat the cable like cheap failure prone chunk of crap that will fail. I got a second cord for power immediately. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007LI2QJW/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M2C_SC_dp_1
Just took one look at that thin usb cable to know it isnt built to last.
when I was a kid stuff that was "made in Taiwan" was to be avoided, ironic.

Ehm, nope... I use it with care. Never pull at the cable but just take it out at the connector itself. But I guess you should always keep it in one straight line or something.

Hmmm, nice option... I think I also have a proper power adapter which simply supplies 12v all the time (where the asus one switches to 5V once fully charged). Does that matter? Being at 12v all the time?
This guy seems to have analyzed it pretty well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377669

After I'm done charging, I will keep them in a storage bag. Well TBH, I do fear that it's gonna fail. Coz it looks like a damn apple charger. that weak link
Put the power brick in the freezer for 45 minutes!
It fixes it for awhile.
My cable just went bad yesterday exactly the same way.
Gladly I've had a spare one that I have bought from ebay couple months ago.
I have to get another spare one I think...

The power brick isnt the issue... The cable from the TF101 works on both chargers, the cable of the TF201 on neither. The TF101 one is also from a spare powerbrick I bought coz I originally thought the charger was the issue as well. It's just a very feeble charger and cable, again...

This power connection is also a lot better fit for the dock power connector. I always felt like the one that came with my prime was going to fall out of the dock.
I have had the same issue. I bought the TF-101 for my daughter, and the first cable had the insulation sliding off near the connector after about a week. I saw that my daughter would rest the tablet on the connector at awkward angles, so I lectured her about being more careful and bought two more cables. When she went through those in a few months, I bought 5 extra cables. I know she is being more careful with them now, because they still look new when they stop charging. One of the cables I bought never worked. We are now on the last one of the batch, so I just bought 12 more.
It hasn't gone unnoticed that I am financially rewarding Asus for producing a shoddy product. We call that "the invisible hand of the market", right?

[Q] Damage to Z Ultra from Magnetic Charger?

Hey, I just got my Z Ultra less than a week ago and I purchased http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JEN5S6A/
I figured it would be easier to use then undoing the charging flap every time.
When I was trying the tip out without being connected to the charger I noticed the magnet was strong but didn't sit in the connector properly..
After looking at some other magnetic chargers online I saw some of them being plugged in upside down so I tried that and it sat in the port better.
When the phone was extremely low on batter (4 percent) I plugged the charger into the tip and put it on upside down. At first the phone restarted so I thought hmm thats weird and unplugged it, I then tried again and made sure it sat in the port snug and my phone turned off and wouldnt turn on again.. After about 15 minutes of the phone charging with no sign of led or charging symbol I found online to try the reset button and it finally turned on. I did some searching online and found out that the port isn't really meant for a magnetic charger but a dock and what I experienced was inverse connection.
So i am wondering if this could have possibly damaged the phone or battery in any way? I dont know if my battery life has been affected or stayed the same as it was the second day of having the phone..
Sorry for the long rant but I would appreciate any input. Thanks
You're not the first one to do a "reverse charging", and I believe that it will or can damage your device. The magnetic connector is made for the Sony DK30 dock, which costs around $30.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EC...200_QL40&qid=1404599682&sr=8-1#ref=mp_s_a_1_1
The thing with using accessories like you do, is that it's not a genuine product by Sony, so any damage done by say, a no-name charger like you're using, won't be covered by the warranty. If your Ultra catches fire in the middle of the night and you're using a " fake" charger, well tough luck. Sony won't cover that.
I would use a "fake" charger if the Ultra had a removable battery, in case it got damaged, but it doesn't, so you're really playing with fire right now.
Well to be honest I did not know the charger wasn't made for that until I experienced that. I've ordered the dk30 dock online as the sony store near me did not carry it but was wondering if I should be concerned with what already happened and get my phone swapped as it's still within return policy..?

i bought a aftermarket magnetic charging cable, plugged reversely and same as yours, couldnt turn on until i pressed the reset button to make the led lit when charging, waited a few hours plugged to the usb sony charger, led turned out normal. just when i thought it was fine again i noticed whenever i turned it off it turned itself on again and boot loop until i pressed the reset button to make it really off, plus, when it hit 15% battery life on the indicator on notification bar, it dropped 2% per second, yes, per second, and phone died. returned it and waiting for replacement.
see if yours has those symptoms, i think reverse charging does damage to the battery or the phone, see the shape of the tips of the charging port different, there may be a reason behind it.
edit: the reason i tried plugging the magnetic cable reversely was while i plugged it in normal direction, it showed its charging while it wasnt, thats y, and it was a cheap aftermarket one, i ended up buying a official dk30 from sony store

I have a Magnetic Charger - and I too experienced the shut down when I tried it upside down once.
I'm using a generic charger and haven't experienced any issues for months - just make sure to use it correctly.
This thread has me worried now though haha.

Im sure there has been one that the charger was the wrong polarity I think, and another where it was misused, that ended up with near dead batteries
I accidentally connected the charger in reverse, well the port is now dead. The phone thinks it's charging but the charger light never comes on and GSAM shows no increase in charge. At least the USB port still works.

Thank you very much for the warning. After reading this thread I was thinking that Sony should have keyed the connector to only plug in one orientation. I looked at my magnetic charger and that is indeed the case. One opening is round and one is oval, so the round opening will not fit over the oval contact on the phone. I guess the issue is the quality of the magnetic charger cable - a cheap one still may allow contact. The key is that the contacts on the cable are recessed into the housing so that the housing must fit over the posts on the phone before contact is made.
why in the name of all that is holy does the connector even allow for being plugged in the wrong way???
Cheap Chineese knockoffs. JUST DON'T BUY THEM.
Sony should have just gone with induction charging but oh well. As cheap as the GPe is right now, I'll just buy another one.

I just found this thread after plugging in my magnetic adapter in backwards. I have been using it for almost 6 months with no problem, and then this past Friday, I sat down at my desk and grabbed the charger and stuck it on without looking, and the phone shut off. You know the rest, now the magnetic port is done, and the screen will either keep coming back on while charging, or shut off and not come back on unless I force it off with Power + Vol + key. This sucks. I don't think I will get another Sony since it was so easy to kill it. Great big screen though, I will miss it.

It wasn't a sony cable though was it? can you blame sony for a defective charger that they don't make?

You're right, it was some cheap Chinese magnetic adapter, and true, I can't blame Sony for that. I guess I have gotten accustomed to buying any cheap microUSB cable or even headphone I can find, and using it on my phone without a second thought. I think that's why all of us who have messed up our phones with these bad magnetic adapters didn't stop to think we were putting our phone at risk. It was just another cheap accessory. I guess I have learned my lesson to be more careful what I stick into my next phone.
Be careful of where you purchase the dock as well; I purchased the DK 30 dock on eBay, and after about a month, started having problems charging. One day, it wouldn't charge on the dock at all.
Saw that the right pin in the dock has one of the plastic surrounds which broke off, which I assume is the culprit of the problem.
So off I went, this time Amazon, to order another dock, which works, using it now to charge my mobile phone.

Fire!
I almost killed my phone! Aside from upside-down, I was using an apple 2.4a charger - it burned the side out of the phone, and melted the cable right off the connector - in fact - the melting-off probably saved me - house filled with smoke etc. It did the mad re-start loop thing for about half an hour (my guess - there's a temp sensor in there which was tripping our because of the heat), but to my amazement, even with the side melted to death, the phone now still seems to work OK for me (probably not including the "waterproof" feature anymore).
Was super lucky it didn't burn the house down. What kind of idiot manufacturer doesn't put a polarity bridge on their reversable socket!?!?!?!

with an oem version the plug isn't reversible for all accounts I've read
I bought one on eBay allegedly SONY, broken in two-three weeks of use.
Brought another on Amazon, believe it is genuine, still works.
Both were the DK-30 charging dock. The broken one I use to watch YouTube.

Just to echo all of the previous posters - had the same issue as well.
My experience played out as follows:
* Got phone - over joyed since recently price reductions for such a high quality product meant approx USD290.
* Realise the flaps are a bit annoying so after 1 week; get magnetic charger. Seems to work at office
* Get another for home. After try two times; connect but not charge. connect in reverse. Phone shuts off immediately.
* PANICK - for next 30 minutes try the little red button, power switch + (combinations). Nothing helps
* eventually just plug into USB port and pray. After another 20 minutes get blinking red LED. But still doesn't boot
* another 20 minutes ago- solid LED; it boots! still at original percentage battery.
* now have strange problem - without anything plugged in; the phone can't boot properly, get repated SONY logo followed by power off and loop. CPU gets hot.
* If plug in USB - get styled battery icon; and when booting... IT WORKS.
* If close to fully charge (>90%) screen keeps on activating now when charging.
* to rub salt in the wound; the original magnetic charger at work doesn't seem to charge anymore (ie magnetic charger port dead).
Since it is a 3 week old phone, have lots of mixed feelings now. It was REALLY great purchase for the price and happy with it at first. but now I feel like I have a damaged product. feel quite upset.
I know buying cheap USB charger was the problem; but for SONY to have something so critical and vulnerable makes me wary as well. Initlally happy with phone (came from Galaxy Note camp) but now just wary of the phones.

I am facing the same problem. My magnetic charging port is now dead ( charging led lights up but the doesn't charged the battery. battery level goes down ). I have changed the magnetic charging port, but still behaves the same. Do you think changing the charging flex will make it work ? because if the magnetic charging port is damaged from motherboard itself, then there is no point changing the flex...
Appreciate your reply.
Thanks !

Magnetic USB Charging Cable

Magnetic USB Charging Cable, some one will try it?
http://dx-box.com/high-performance-...e-magnetic-connection-and-charging-speed.html
I will not touch a third party charger. I want to buy the DK30/Dk31 dock and take it apart for the EC21 cable but I'm not sure if its compatible? Does Somebody know maybe?
The page doesn't load for me, but I'd trust the microUSB -> Magnetic convertors over the entire charger. That way you can use the OEM charger or another high quality charger.
A lot of brandless chargers are made lower quality and that can lead to issues where phones "explode". Odds are, whenever you read about a person's phone exploding they were probably using a knockoff charger.
The adapters shouldn't be a problem. It's just a simple wire-to-wire exchange. No circuits.
Something like this
http://www.amazon.com/Magnector-Per...1144360&sr=8-1&keywords=magnetic+charger+sony
EDIT: I got a kick out of "Reverse Attachment Charging Protection", because the charging holes are just different sizes.
My Z1 magnetic charging cable works although it is a tad more easy to dislodge compared to when I was using it on my z1
I have THIS http://www.clove.co.uk/microusb-to-magnetic-connector-adapter and I must say it doesn't work perfectly. The adaptater doesn't 'grip', it stays in place only if you put you Z3 down.

OF COURSE. There are phones exploding just everywhere; you just cannot leave the house without ear protectors because there's exploding phones all around you.
Honestly; I am so sick of reading that "exploding phone" stories over and over. Same with stolen kidneys and similar paramountly believable urban legends.

believe its 1.5A based on the same code found on other sony country sites.

however, lazy to check if its the same model that comes with the Z3 although i believe it should be!
This is the one my Z3 came with. T-mobile Netherlands model.

I'm pretty sure it is 1,5A. Charged my device only once with it and I was surprised with the speed. Will do a timed run next time round.

the picture clearly reads 1500mA and that's what it is. This charger was included with my z3 as well.
2.30h to fully charge the batery with original 1.5A charger. Its not so bad.
EP880 is 1.5A, and is what came with my Z3. I'm intrigued to know what the 881 is.
In fact, given its support of Quick Charge 2.0, I am hopeful of Sony releasing a new PSU that can detect a QC2 compatible device and up the power further. So far I can only find one from Motorola and it's not on sale outside the US (that I can see).
Hi All,
Thought I'd give my review of two different magnetic cables I've purchased from my Xperia Z3.
Firstly, I purchased a £3 magnetic cable from Ebay which was utterly a waste of money! Soon as you picked the phone up or touched it the connection port would move up or down. I contacted the seller who is sending me a replacement so will see if this is any better.
Now on to the more expensive magnetic cable but with a twist.
This magnetic cable I purchased from Amazon had great reviews from previous Z2 users. Now I wasn't sure if it was Z3 compatible but turned out the ports are the same for Z2 and Z3. So I purchased the item from Flubit as you get a little discount if they can get a deal for you and it arrived within 2-3 working days.
Item name: [ Magnector X ] High Performance Universal Sony Xperia Z1 & Z2 & Z3 Charging Adapter for Micro USB Cable - Enhanced Magnetic Connection and Charging Speed [ Black ]
This product felt more durable and solid when taking it out of the mildly fancy packaging. The product itself isn't connected to a cable but has a micro usb port which you attach your original Sony cable to. (unfortunately I need 10 posts before i can show pics but just check it out on Amazon. I tried it for the first time last night as my phone stays next to my pillow and it seems to do the trick as it didn't fall off even with my cheapy case attached to it in the morning.
As the saying is, buy cheap...buy twice! Hope this review helps anyone on making a decision between the cheap ones and expensive ones.:good:

I also just got this cable through today and its fantastic.
Avoid the cheap ones.
Got one first thing Monday morning via Amazon and super impressed because I ordered it at 6.55pm on Sunday night!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00H2EEB4S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I got mine from Amazon (Prime) but there was only one in stock and I got it, so now it's showing from another supplier.
It's great! I had two unknown Chinese-made ones before, and both struggled to stick to my Z2 or Z3, causing all sorts of weird issues (mostly that of what it would be like to attach and detach the lead repeatedly). They're now history.
So far this is clamping on so solid that there's no chance of that happening, and I always 'rotate' the magnetic chargers off so no chance of pulling out the connector.
I also got the official dock, but at £20-odd at a time (and I now have a mountain of docks because all I need are the inserts, not a new dock for each phone) I will probably get one or two more of these. The dock by the bedside and these around the house and at work.
Hi what's do you mean by rotate to keep it secured?
When taking off I simply fold/twist it back rather than pull it off and risk damage, given how strong the magnetic force is.
I have bought this one on ebay , "Magnetic Charging Dock Cradle Desktop Charger for Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact" for about 10 euro's (incl sending)
it works nice , you don't need to open the covers each time.

Why does my magnetic port not work anymore?

A while ago I bought a cheap chinese cable for the magnetic port on my Z Ultra GPE. I used it without incident for several weeks. Then one time, I plug my phone in to the cable (and I know for a fact that I put it in the correct way - the construction of the connector only allowed for it to be put in correctly) and my phone instantly rebooted. (It should be noted I was using the stock wall charger unit, as I usually did). Now my phone freaks out when I try to charge it through the magnetic port. The display flashes between Daydream (which isn't even activated) and my lockscreen, while not charging. When I plug the phone into a computer (through the microUSB port) the same thing happens but I can transfer files between the two devices normally. It should be noted my device is rooted.
Anyone else have this problem? Any help is appreciated - thanks for reading my post.
TL;DR Magnetic cable made my phone weird
Similar (but not precisely the same) issue here with 3 different magnetic cables. My wife and i each have a ZU GPe and they are in pristine condition kept in flip cover cases. We have been using the magnetic charging cables for months. However, the past couple of weeks the cables no longer charge at the normal rate.
After being attached, using the Sony transformer, for hours, either phone only shows a charge increase of about 10%. Had the USB connector been used, the battery would have been fully charged. I have made no changes to either phone on stock GPe ROM. Also, I have checked for any corrosion on the connectors and found none.
For now, we use the Sony USB cable and I'll test again after we get Android L.

[Q] few questions about the magnetic charger

for those who have it and used it for long time..
1) is it charging faster/slower/same than regularly charging? (with the same charger of course)
2) is it actually comfortable? after trying it, do you actually use it daily and enjoy or its a gimmick only and you went back to the regular cable?
3) is it causing any damages? bugs? weird stuffs?
I'm Z owner (it doesn't compatible with magnets) and I'm considering to upgrade to z2/3/3c with mainly reason of the magnetic charging..
Some experience sharing would really help me out here.. YouTube is only for unboxing and showing it but no real tips from experienced users..
Thanks.
Been using magnetic chargers for bout half a year. So far:
1) The charging time is pretty much the same. I've been using the cheap chinese ones and haven't noticed a significant increase in the time it takes.
2) If you're willing to buy an expensive cable, I suppose the magnet would be stronger, but in my one dollar case it disconnects pretty easily. So it's not really comfortable when you have to keep the phone on a flat surface while charging. But people use magnetic cables to prevent the wear and tear of the flaps, and so do I.
3) No bugs, it's just a charger. The only thing that can go wrong is having your battery fried if you plug the cable incorrectly
1) same speed which actually depends more on used charger than the cable type
2) for charging I use only magnetic cable or cradle. In fact I used USB cable for maybe 2 days only and will never return back
3) lockscreen rotates according to the gravity sensor, otherwise no difference or issue
It's worth the investment. Really helps to protect the flaps and save time opening them

Thank you all!
Just make sure you never attach the cable inverted, otherwise it will fry not only the battery, but the whole motherboard. and also, make sure that nobody tries to charge it but you, as most people are careless and might attach it the wrong way. I have heard some dreadful stories about inverting the magnetic cable, this is a major design flaw from Sony, but again, all of those cables are fake and there is no genuine one from Sony, but only the dock, I don't know whether the phone can be put the wrong way in the dock as well. I have bought one for 9$ and working great, except the magnet isn't strong enough and it gets detached very easily. Good luck
Make sure u bought a high quality/expensive magnetic charger or u will regret, just like me. Ive using the local/cheap magnetic charger, and im really pissed off, the led charging keep blinking even if an ant pass through. This is what im using now, and i recommended for u too. http://www.amazon.com/Magnector-Improved-Performance-Magnetic-Charging/dp/B00Q3GK3YI

actually it's not!
If you take a really close look you see that one of the pin's has a bigger plastic encasing. So it "shouldn't" be possible to connect the magnetic charger the wrong way.
And about the Dock... who would try to put the phone into the dock with the display facing the wall? xD well okay... yeah... if it's dark and you're drunk... i can totally see me doing this....
BTT: i can reccomend this Magnector cables! i have one myself, after i bough 3 in China this is the first one working correctly, aka charging fast enough.

Just google for Z ultra magnetic charger options and you will see how many motherboard got fried from inverted mag charger. I know that there are to pols one is a bit larger but still, the connector can enter the wrong way, at least some connector.
Hi, i bought the dk36 dock with magnetic charger on amazon, cheaper than the official sony shop, it charges in the same time. A friend told me that the magnetic cables are very bad, they are very cheap but can make the phone burn because of the low quality as you say.

Your friend doesn't know anything about electronics. Do you even know how the magnetic charging works? The only bad thing that can happen from chinese docks is slow charging. I have a DIY magnetic cable and it works great in terms of speed(it had a really weak magnet and a dock came with my Z2, so I don't use it anymore). Reverse polarity is unlikely to happen-most mag connectors are keyed. But anyways, be careful with the orientation.
